2016 News Tribune All-Area Baseball Team JOHN AASE NATHANIEL BENSON CHRIS CARLSON TRAVIS CARRUTH Proctor Junior outfielder Duluth East Senior outfielder Barnum Senior infielder Hibbing Junior outfielder • News Tribune All-Area Player of the Year found a way to impact just about every game for Section 7AA champs, especially on the mound, where he piled up 69 strikeouts while going 7-3 with a 2.15 ERA in 55 1/3 innings • Twelve of his 31 hits went for extra bases, including five homers, as the section player of the year and All-Lake Superior Conference first-team choice compiled a .397 average with 28 RBIs • “Tough out” highlighted a potent offense by batting .385 with four doubles, three homers, 19 RBIs and 27 runs; also walked 19 times • Carlson, who will play at Daytona State College in Florida, hit .441 with 19 doubles and three triples, and stole 28 bases • Keyed Bluejackets’ 15-win campaign, which ended in Section 7AAA finals, with both his pitching and hitting, including a .321 average and 12 RBIs • Selected for Play Ball! Minnesota all-star series and All-Section 7AAAA after helping Greyhounds win 19 games, including 12 in a row to begin the season • Three of his seven pitching victories were no-hitters, including against East Central in Section 5A playoffs, and another was a one-hitter as the All-Polar League performer produced a 2.46 ERA and 123 strikeouts in 62 innings • All-section honoree went 6-2 (four complete games in eight starts) with a 1.12 ERA and 44 strikeouts in 50 innings; only losses were against Class AAAA Rochester Mayo and Duluth East, both of which Carruth allowed just one earned run NICK EMANUEL PATRICK HUISMAN SAM LAAKSO PETER LENZ Esko Senior catcher Ely Senior pitcher Duluth East Junior pitcher Duluth Marshall Senior pitcher • Mr. Baseball finalist tallied 16 extra-base hits, including a state-best eight homers, to go with a .471 batting average, 36 RBIs and a 1.573 OPS (on-base plus slugging) • All-State and All-Polar League pick is an excellent defensive backstop and will play in college at NPAA Division I North Dakota State • Five-year starter and three-time state tournament participant was 8-2 with a 1.10 ERA and fanned 104 in 70 innings; run he allowed in Timberwolves’ state-opening 1-0 loss to Adrian was first earned run he gave up since May 6 win over Greenway • Hit .440 with eight doubles and 26 RBIs, reached base at a .538 clip and garnered All-State and All-Section 7A accolades • Amassed a 5-2 record, 1.96 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP (walks plus hits per inning pitched) in 46 1/3 innings against a schedule loaded with big schools • All-Section 7AAAA selection added two saves and struck out 25 for a team that was ranked among Class AAAA’s top 15 much of the season • Deceptively dominant All-LSC first-teamer was 6-3 with a 1.71 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, 48 strikeouts and seven walks in 53 1/3 innings for the 16-9 Hilltoppers; his first start of the spring was a no-hitter vs. Breck • Lenz, who will play collegiately at St. John’s in Collegeville, Minn., also contributed offensively, hitting .333 and scoring 17 runs JAKE MALEC SAM MARTINSON DEVIN MAYRY TANNER RICHEY Proctor Senior outfielder Northwestern Junior pitcher Cherry Senior pitcher Duluth Denfeld Senior infielder • Returned from hyperextending his right arm during hockey season to bat .372 with seven doubles, three triples and 20 RBIs as Rails reached fourth state tournament in program history • North Dakota State recruit, who served as designated hitter until a medical clearance to throw allowed him to play in the outfield, catch and pitch a few innings, was tabbed All-State as well as first-team All-LSC • Hard-throwing Tiger managed 48 strikeouts in 35 2/3 innings and was 4-0 with an ERA of 2.16 • Made the All-Heart O’ North Conference first team and batted .323 with three home runs, three triples and 16 RBIs • Was 12-1 on the mound and accounted for a whopping 63 percent of Tigers’ 19 victories while crafting a 1.09 ERA with 97 strikeouts and 14 walks in 79 innings • Future Mesabi Range College player was a .368 hitter, collected 17 RBIs and was a perfect 16-for-16 on stolen-base attempts en route to being named All-State and All-Section 7A • Slick-fielding shortstop’s offense (.389 average, 17 RBIs and just five strikeouts) and defense (.939 fielding percentage) buoyed resurgent Hunters • Mesabi Range College commit was tabbed first-team All-LSC and All-Section 7AAA
