MESSAGE FROM
MAYOR ASHTON J. HAYWARD
I have been honored to serve as Mayor of Pensacola for the
past five years and I have had the pleasure of challenging our
remarkable Parks and Recreation Department employees in
realizing a quality park system in the City of Pensacola. With
over 200 recreation programs and activities we now are able
to offer more than ever before to area residents.
With the onset of winter comes a variety of activities perfect
for the weather. Pensacola is where we live and work but I
also encourage all of our citizens to get out and play! Go
on a walk through Admiral Mason, throw a Frisbee with the
children at Aragon Park, sign yourself or your children up for
a sports league or simply put on a helmet and go for a bike
ride. Take the opportunity, especially if you haven’t already,
to visit one of our 11 activity centers like the newly reopened
Vickery Center.
Pensacola is more vibrant than ever and we are becoming
more active. The quality of life here is unmatched due to our
goal to create a successful City for everyone. I hope that you
and your families will explore & utilize the 600 acres of parks
and open spaces, and the great programs and facilities that
Pensacola has to offer.
Our Parks & Recreation Department has done an excellent
job of organizing these activities in the Winter Activity Guide.
There are so many options and I encourage everyone to take
advantage and see what makes Pensacola the best place to
live, work and play.

Tennis-4-Everyone is a nonprofit organization providing
year-round tennis instruction and academic tutoring
throughout the school year to youth in Pensacola.
Children attending summer camps at community centers in
the Pensacola area such as Cobb, Fricker, and Gull Point
Resource Centers, the Salvation Army and YMCA Langley
receive free tennis instruction. Tennis-4-Everyone coaches
and volunteers utilize the United States Tennis Association’s
“10 & Under” format, the latest method of teaching young
beginners. 10 & Under Tennis uses lighter racquets and
decompressed balls to allow for extended rallies almost
immediately even for beginners. Fun is had right away, and
children learn to love the sport of tennis - a healthy hobby
that can be enjoyed for a lifetime!
Each August, several participants are chosen for their
enthusiasm as well as their talent to receive “tennis
scholarships” in the form of free tennis lessons on Saturdays
throughout the school year.
Tennis-4-Everyone volunteer tutors and mentors work
throughout the school-year with kids in community center
after-care programs. Assistance with daily homework,
studying and remedial practice is provided. After schoolwork
is finished, the kids get to enjoy some tennis instruction and
play with their friends as a reward for a job well done!
Every year, Tennis-4-Everyone introduces over 200 children
to the fun and healthy sport of tennis. Studies have shown
that kids who participate in sports are less likely to turn to
unhealthy and dangerous alternatives in their teen years,
such as drugs, gangs and other criminal activities.
Please contact Rita Dotson if you are interested in learning
more about this wonderful program, would like to make a
financial contribution, or donate your time and talent as a
volunteer!

GRANT AWARDED FOR “CHAPPIE” JAMES, JR. MUSEUM
City of Pensacola officials were recently notified that the Florida Department
of Environmental Protection has approved a grant proposal to develop a
low impact stormwater retrofit of the parking area and site of the proposed
General Daniel Chappie James, Jr. Museum.
The grant proposal “Stormwater Retrofit Chappie James Home (historic
site)” is for a total of $100,000 grant funds and $75,000 match funds
for funding consideration from the Short term Section 319(h) grant
administered by the Nonpoint Source Management Section.
The grant awarded by FDEP will allow the City to move forward with phase
one of the project which includes the low impact stormwater retrofit of the
parking area and site which is currently a city park. Future phases would
include funds to renovate and activate the historic home and birth site of
America’s first African-American Four Star General to house a state-of-theart museum and youth flight academy. Funding for the remaining phases is
being sought through Escambia County RESTORE funds and the Eastside
Redevelopment Trust Fund.
City Revitalization Coordinator, Helen Gibson said this project will contribute to community revitalization of the Eastside
Redevelopment district and support tourism development. “In addition to providing an educational venue for visitors to understand
the early history of a historical African-American military man, this grant will also allow the project to be developed as a model for
on-site stormwater mitigation,” Gibson said. Ideally projects such as the “Chappie” James, Jr. Museum can help shift community
perception of stormwater mitigation from large treatment facilities, solely, to include individual contributions that can be made by
every property owner.
