They are so good! Emo Fair packed with people having a ball From l. Daelyn and Serena Teeple were joined by their cousins, Norah and Carmen Meeks who came in from Dryden for the fair. They were sitting in the Grandstand waiting for the parade to arrive. Ed Kennedy, Zone 72 Commander, Vernon Thompson, Emo Legion Branch #99 President, and Brian McCallum Zone 72 Deputy Commander were ready to take the salute from the marching veterans as they entered the grand stand. Jayla Beckett enjoyed her first-ever ‘Odd Dog’ at the Emo Fair. “It’s awesome”, said the visitor from Calgary, Alberta. John Rafferty, Member of Parliament was at the Exhibition Hall. By: Teresa Hazel The Rainy River Valley Agricultural Society once again put on a great three days of fun during this year’s 114th fall fair. From the Emo Fair Queen pageant to stock car races and from midway rides to parades, with livestock contests, exhibition hall set-up and horse races all added in, Photographers’ showcase Following a Monarch Habitat Workshop in Sioux Narrows, many who attended that course are now helping to save the Monarchs. This one, found as a miniscule egg (only the size of a pin head) under the leaf of a Milkweed plant, was first raised as a caterpillar, the size of this small letter ‘ i “. Over the past month, that caterpillar went through incredible transformations, until it’s emergence here, as a butterfly! Only a few seconds young, and still clinging to its’ chrysalis, it was born as an ‘ADULT’ butterfly on Aug. 7th! Fascinating! It soon was feasting on nectar flowers, to prepare for its’ long journey south, to overwinter in the interior of Mexico. Lightweight, and on paper-thin wings, this Monarch will soon begin a flight south, of over 2400 miles, with no adult butterfly to guide it! Females born here in 2014, should later lay hundreds of eggs in the spring of 2015, when they begin to fly north again….but only if Milkweed can be found! Milkweed is an absolute “MUST’ for all Monarchs; they won’t survive without it! Congratulations to this year’s featured family, the Tom and Shirley Morrish family who grew up with the annual fair being a huge part of their lives. Their involvement with the fair took on many roles from exhibiting their livestock, garden produce and baking to becoming involved as 4-H leaders and volunteers. Their six children also participated in the fair beginning back in the 1970’s and carried on the tradition of showing their 4-H calves, steers and Galloway cattle. Tom and Shirley put in countless hours every year setting up the exhibition hall at the farm progress building and help with the arduous task of clean-up after the event. Their dedication and love for kids and animals is evident and they both are committed to continuing their involvement “for as long as time allows”. Congratulations also to this year’s Emo Fair royalty that saw Kassidy LeDrew crowned 2014 Emo Fair Queen. First Princess was Elizabeth Allan and Joleigh Hayes was named second princess. Mini-King was Benjamin Latter and Reece Wiersema was crowned MiniQueen. To those who took home red ribbons for their exhibits in the farm progress building, well done and to the 4-H members who were awarded prizes for their livestock, good job. To all the winners in the Beef and Dairy Cattle Show and the Horse Show, great effort. Starting ninth in the feature, Davis moved up to second spot but was unable to mount a charge on Jones for back to back wins. Ward Imrie made the pass for second about halfway through the race but was unable to get to the leader in time as twenty-five laps caution free were completed. In the WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds, Winnipeg driver Paul Veert started in the eighth position and moved up to the lead about halfway. Matt Depiero, who started fifteenth, got within a car length of Veert but ran out of time with nineteen laps of caution-free racing Moos by Kim Jo Bliss And another Emo Fair has come and gone! It actually makes me kind of sad. It always seems that once the Fair is over, Fall arrives rather quickly. What a great weekend we had. Despite the crazy hot day on Friday (likely our hottest day in 2014) – it was a wonderful weekend. I managed to get my cattle there, and made a few things for the exhibition hall. I hope that I make enough in prize $ to pay my annual membership fee! I am very proud of Maddie and Marlee – they did such a great job with their calves. It is amazing how much they have improved and how much more confident they have become. Marlee’s heifer knocked her down twice and I was worried she would be upset and quit but she brushed herself off and kept going. Marlee ended up 1st with her heifer and Maddie 2nd. Shane met Marlee in the barn and said “gee that is too bad your heifer wasn’t behaving” – she replied “that’s o.k., he liked mine best!” Charlie and Levi (the twins from Dryden) did a great job showing their calves – Charlie and Levi. Levi did give Levi a run for his money – but he hung on tight despite his hat falling right over his eyes. The 4-H classes went well and with the weather being a bit cooler Saturday a.m. the cattle behaved very well. We had a wonderful group of steers. History was made with sisters Morgan and Jessica Haw with Grand and Reserve Champions followed by brothers Timothy and Leroy Rempel. Morgan and Jessica were also our Grand and Reserve Champion showmen as well. A big thank you to all that helped to make our 4-H Show and Sale such a great success! Special thanks to Telford Advent for stepping in on short notice to sell our steers – we certainly appreciated this. The Rainy River Hereford Association sold every last ticket on their $500 beef package or $500 cash – first time in a long time that happened. The winner was a stock car driver from Thunder Bay and I will publish the name next week. Guess the weight is always a popular event and this year our orphan steer Dudley was the candidate to guess the weight on. Dudley is now a year and half old but still nice and quiet for people to be visiting throughout the Fair. Dudley weighed 1070 lbs and Eltjo Weirsema was the lucky “guesser!” Dudley enjoyed his weekend. Often we have a cattle sale the weekend following the Emo Fair but this year we don’t so it looks like we will pack up our cattle and head off to the Dryden Fair. Maddie and Marlee are very excited to display their heifer calves to their Dryden Grandma and Grandpa and cousins! So the dragging isn’t over yet! My students have only 2 weeks left at the station. This makes me sad as well. Because of our late start it isn’t looking good to having much of the plots combined and in this year. I have a whole lot of work ahead of me and I will likely have to find someone to help! The next cattle sale is September 6th – get in touch with James Gibson if you have cattle or questions. James # is 807-487-2731 or 807-2712005. to settle for second. Rea Memorial Defending champ Christopher Leek finished third and reclaimed the points lead in the season standings. In the Street Stocks Ron Westover held the high line over Tylar Wilson for the majority of the race, but Wilson did not give up and was able to squeak back to back wins at the Emo Fair. The 2014 Rea Memorial Champions are Paul Veert in the WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds, Justin Jones in the WISSOTA Modifieds, and Tylar Wilson in the Emo Street Stocks. Congratulations! Thank you to all the great volunteers, sponsors and fans for their support and helping in a great success at the Emo Speedway! The Keith McNally Memorial and Season Championship is this weekend. Charleen Mallory creates interesting porcelain pieces and jewellery for those in the market. By: Teresa Hazel There are still a couple of weeks left in the summer season to check out the vendors at Market Thursday on Scott Street in Fort Frances who sell their arts and crafts in front of the Fort Frances Museum. There are a variety of items for sale that range from plants and baking to jewellery and hand knit doll clothes. Priscilla Wright comes every week with her 18” doll outfits that are all hand sewn. She also has knit blankets and socks for sale. “I’ve sold a lot this week”, reports Wright as to the customers that stop by to check out her stuff. Judy Tucker is also there selling her native flowering perennials to promote pollination for Monarch butterflies and bees. “It’s my own stock”, notes the passionate activist who grows them on her own property in Watten Township. “The Monarchs need milkweed to live. They can’t use anything else. If there is no milkweed, they can’t lay eggs”. Tucker reports that there is much folklore about milkweed that it is poisonous, which causes gardeners to get rid of it and, in turn, causes the decline of the Monarch butterfly population. She shares photos that she has taken of the various stages of the birth of the Monarch butterfly that are beautiful. Tucker has created an oasis for the Monarch butterfly in her own backyard. “They come in every year. The one’s here migrate to Mexico. They don’t go much further North than here”, she adds. The wildflowers that are in full bloom in August on her property provide a place of solitude and meditation for Tucker who also brings along fresh-baked cinnamon buns and a few crafts for sale. Penny McComb was second with her time of 38:13; and Jillian Gustafson placed third, coming in a minute and a half after McComb at 39:37.
