Department of Veterans Affairs employee Elizabeth
Rivera Rivera, 39, was fired after her arrest (followed by a
February guilty plea) for armed robbery, but when she was
sentenced only to probation, an arbitrator ordered the VA
to rehire her -- and give her back pay she “earned” while
sitting in jail awaiting trial. (She had been the driver for a
man arrested for a street robbery in San Juan, Puerto Rico.)
Rivera’s union had demanded the reinstatement without
salary penalty -- for “fairness” -- because the same Puerto
Rico VA office had earlier hired a convicted sex offender,
and the office’s hospital director, recently charged with
DUI and drug possession, avoided VA discipline because
of technicalities about the traffic stop.

■ Urges: (1) Ms. Ashton Barton, 33, charged with shoplifting
a vibrating sex toy from a CVS pharmacy in Largo, Florida,
in February, tried for police sympathy by explaining that
she was in a troubled marriage. “My husband doesn’t want
to touch me anymore,” and “I would rather do this than
be unfaithful.” (2) Neighbors of a loudly frisky couple in a
Stockholm, Sweden, apartment building were so frustrated
by the noise that they reached out to the country’s health
minister, Gabriel Wikstrom -- who took the side of the
randy couple (according to a translation by Stockholm’s
The Local): “Sounds nice for them, I think. Good for their
wellbeing and thus public health as well.”
■ Nice Tries: (1) Benjamin Grafius, 39, charged with several
instances of indecent exposure to Amish people near
New Holland, Pennsylvania, told police that he targeted
them because he knew they would not use phones to call
police (March). (2) Valerie Godbout, 33, visiting Orlando
from Montreal and charged with drug possession after
alerting police with erratic driving, told the officer that she
was on the wrong side of the road because that’s the way
traffic works in Canada. (It’s not.) (March). (3) Emily Davis,
21, caught by police displaying her recently deceased
grandmother’s handicap-parking badge, explained that

BREAKTHROUGHS IN SCIENCE
IRONIES
German researchers, publishing in March, revealed that
female burying beetles uniquely discourage their mates
from pestering them for sex after birth -- thus explaining
how the male of this species is observed actually helping
with child care. The females apparently release a chemical
“anti-aphrodisiac” to the father’s antennae. Said the lead
researcher (a woman), “They are a very modern family.” Said
another biology professor (also female), “Burying beetles
are supercool.”
■ Science magazine called the “butthole” “one of the
finest innovations in the past 540 million years of animal
evolution” -- in that, until it developed, animals’ only channel
of waste removal was through the same opening used for
food intake. However, the recent discovery, announced at
a March conference by a University of Miami biologist, that
gelatinous sea creatures called comb jellies can excrete via
other pores, was labeled by the magazine as “stunn(ing).”
■ The Emerging American “Right” of Rejecting Science:
In 2000, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
declared that measles had been eliminated in the United
States, but by 2014 Americans had resurrected it (677
reported cases), and researchers from Emory University
and Johns Hopkins set out to learn how -- and recently
found the dominant reason to be the purposeful decision
by some Americans to refuse or delay widely available
vaccinations (especially for their children). (The researchers
found similar, but less-strong conclusions about whooping
cough.)
Ervin Brinker, 68, pleaded guilty to Medicaid fraud
as CEO of the Summit Pointe health care provider in
Michigan and was sentenced in January to 32 months in
prison. He had embezzled $510,000 in “mental health”
payments and apparently spent it all on a Florida fortune
teller.
■ Two of the three candidates for the Republican
nomination for county property appraiser in Erwin,
Tennessee, in November died before the election, leaving
Rocky McInturff the only survivor. However, he is ineligible
for the nomination because he lost badly on election day
by one of the two dead candidates.

UNDIGNIFIED DEATHS
An 86-year-old woman died in February in New
Cumberland, Pennsylvania, when she tripped and got her
medical alert necklace caught on her walker, strangling
herself.
■ A 25-year-old off-duty New York City police officer was
killed on a highway near Elizabeth, New Jersey, in March.
According to the police report, the officer had rear-ended
another car and had gotten out to “discuss” the matter, then
suddenly pulled his service revolver and threatened the
driver using road rage-type language. As the officer backed
up while pointing the gun, a passing driver accidentally,
fatally struck him.

FINE POINTS OF THE LAW
Joe Vandusen said he has had no contact whatsoever
with his estranged wife for “16 or 17 years” and that both
moved long ago to other relationships (Joe currently living
with a woman, raising both his two children and her two,
as well). Nonetheless, Vandusen’s “real” wife recently gave
birth, from another father, and, without claiming Vandusen
as the father, filed in February for child support from him.
In the Vandusens’ home state of Iowa (like the law in many
states), he must pay, irrespective of any DNA test (unless he

Albuquerque police encountered Leonard Lopez, 26,
inside a Chevy Cobalt car (that was not his) just after
midnight on March 30 after neighbors reported a man
screaming inside, flashing the car’s headlights. A panicked
Lopez was upside down, with his feet on the dashboard
and his head and shoulders wedged under the steering
wheel, hands and arms tucked inside his sweatshirt. He
was charged with burglary, and police guessed he was
probably going through opiate withdrawal.

■ Yet Another Way to Tell If You’re DUI: Maryann Christy,
54, was arrested in Roselle, Illinois, in January when police
spotted her driving through town with a 15-foot-tall tree
firmly lodged in the grille of her car, sticking straight up.
She was apparently too intoxicated to recall where she
“acquired” the tree or how many minutes earlier that was.
■ Peak Truck-Spill Karma: On March 23 on Interstate 95
near Melbourne, Florida, two tractor-trailers collided,
spilling their contents on the road. One truck was carrying
Busch beer and the other various Frito-Lay products.

stressed when asked to prove their identities by biometric
scans of fingerprints, hand prints or eyeballs, Japan’s
Advanced Institute of Industrial Technology has developed
a chair frame that authenticates merely by sitting down:
a butt-scanner. Professor Shigeomi Koshimizu’s device
produces a map of the user’s unique derriere shape,
featuring 256 degrees of pressure at 360 different points
and could be used not only to protect vehicles from theft,

ith two solid weeks of spring
weather, it seems that winter will not
relinquish its icy grip on Buffalo.
While it is easy to lament the return of the
cold temperatures and grumble about digging
the snowbrushes out from the depths of our
basements, there is also reason to celebrate.
The falling temperatures may have Western
New York staring helplessly to the sky, but
the wise. Buffalonian knows that the greatest
treat for the blustery weather is a stout poured
thick, heavy, and dark, and at its freshest - from
taps of the brewers that brewed it. Thankfully,
our local brewers love to brew fantastic stouts
that rival even the best imports.
Since Resurgence Brewing’s soft open, their
Sponge Candy Stout has dominated the
tongues of Buffalo’s dark beer drinkers. It is a
unique brew that uses sponge candy shavings
from a local chocolatier. The beer is medium
bodied with hints of caramel and chocolate.
It’s not as sweet as the name might indicate,
but the creamy sweetness finds a good balance
with the bitter malts used. Resurgence also
has their Chipotle Cinnamon Stout on tap like a spicy hot chocolate to start your parade
morning right. If you’re more in the mood for
some hops with your coffee flavors, try Take
the Black Trail, a black coffee IPA - innovative,
fresh, and delicious.
Downtown Buffalo is home to Big Ditch
Brewing. Big Ditch offers their winter
seasonal Vanilla Oatmeal Stout. Traditionally
full bodied, the oatmeal stout is a meal in
a pint glass, and this stout is just that. The
bitter chocolate flavors balance lightly with
the house-made vanilla extract to produce a
very drinkable stout. Also on tap is Towpath,
Big Ditch’s imperial stout. At 9.4%, Towpath
is just right for hauling tugs down a canalside
road.
On the outskirts of the city, nestled behind
the beer garden at Gene McCarthy’s is Old
First Ward Brewing. OFW’s HO Stout is an
amazingly full oatmeal stout. Like a deep, rich
cup of coffee, this stout is shockingly enjoyable
in its bitterness. HO would make a great base
for roasting your corned beef brisket, and
would pair incredibly with the salty cut.
Heading south, Hamburg Brewing’s Oatmeal

Milk Stout is a full and sweet brew. The
sweetness comes from the milk sugars used
in fermentation, and the full body from the
oatmeal used in the wort. OMS is a winter
seasonal, so Hamburg has also bottled their
imperial stout. Grounded is available in local
grocers and bottle shops around Western New
York.
Also adorning the shelves of your local
grocery store is the jewel of Cattaraugus
County, Ellicott Brewing Company’s Imperial
Chocolate Cherry Bomb. Rich and sweet,
this beer is a bomb indeed, in that the 8.2%
ABV hides behind the cherry flavors. This is
definitely a beer to share with friends after a
night on Holiday Valley’s slopes. EBC also has
several other stouts available in their taproom,
and each are worth stopping by for.
The Woodcock Brothers Porter is a wonderfully
chocolate treat; the beer is smooth and
creamy with little of the bitter smokiness that
porters sometimes lean toward. This brew is
great with a meal or dessert, and is perfect for
the slight chill that remains in the air as spring
thaw begins.
Flying Bison’s Spot Coffee Stout is another
WNY version of an imperial stout. The body is
thinner than the others, with burnt cocoa and
strong coffee flavor. Brewed with Buffalo’s
favorite coffee, this imperial is available in
four-pack bottles.
If you find yourself northeast of the city,
Woodcock Brothers is pouring their Orange
Chocolate Stout, which is a tasty brew created
with chocolate malts and orange peel - a must
have for St. Patrick’s Day, but also to fill any
growler for upcoming holiday dinners.
If you have your eyes on another prize, closer
to the end of the month, and you’re hoping
for a basket full of Reese’s finest offering, it is
suggested that you head south of the city to
Olean, where newcomers Four Mile Brewing
have their Peanut Butter Stout available.
Happiness in a glass comes in many varieties,
but surely, few as happy as this one - even if it
is missing the jelly.
Despite the freezing temperatures, the Buffalo
River has shed its icy skin and the swift current
has returned to full strength; so flows the
steady outpouring of Buffalo’s deepest and
darkest beers. With each of Jack Frost’s jabs
at your nose, fight back with a swig of the old
sod. The cold weather may have worn out its
welcome, but the Queen City knows how to
ward of the icy fingers of a relentless winter
- elbow to elbow at the nearest oak, with a dark
pint and a warm smile.

Buczkowski. “We have had discussions about the
situation and Mark is committed to restocking
the entire minor league system in the Blue Jays
organization.” And in fact, only 8 players who
were with the 2015 Bisons are returning, so fans
will certainly need a scorecard for all the new
faces on the team.
Another name familiar to Bisons fans should
be a regular around the ballpark during the
season. Eric Wedge, who managed the Bisons
before going on to a major league managing
career with Cleveland and Seattle, has signed on
with Toronto as player development advisor.
Buffalo Bison Bobbleheads

pril 14th. It is somewhat fitting that the
Buffalo Bisons hold their home o0opener
on that date.
28 years ago to the day, Buffalo unveiled its new
downtown ballpark, then named Pilot Field,
to rave reviews not only locally, but across the
nation and the baseball world. Buffalo was high
on the list for Major League Baseball expansion,
the new stadium set the bar for design and
amenities seen nowhere in the minor leagues,
and the city celebrated with a parade, and all the
pomp and ceremony befitting such an event.
So here we are, almost three decades since the
Bisons’ Tom Prince solo home run in that first
game opened a new era for Buffalo baseball,
and now Coca Cola Field is still going strong
after all these years.
“We are the second oldest ballpark in the
International League, and the oldest, that
being in Pawtucket, has undergone significant
renovations, so their place resembles little of
its former self,” said Bisons Vice President and
General Manager Mike Buczkowski, as the team
unveiled its new merchandise and food items to
the media and the public late last month.
The Bisons have introduced a couple of pricing
options which could be called screaming
bargains. First of all, the team will accept Canadian
currency at par for all ticket purchases and at all
concession stands through May 8. That includes
advance ticket purchases, so fans wanting to
buy tickets for premium games or events in the
summer can do so and save approximately 30%
by using Canadian cash. Coming on Tuesday
night games is the “Consumers Craft Beer
Club”. For only $99 a customer gets a ticket to
all 10 games and a special cup, which can be
filled with a complimentary pint of craft beer. “I
always tell fans to never pay retail for games until
they check out the specials first,” advised Bisons’
Public Relations Director Brad Bisbing.
The team is encouraging advance purchases by
offering a $2 discount off of any ticket prior to
game day.
The Buffalo Bisons just this week extended their
affiliation with the Toronto Blue Jays through
2018, a partnership now in its fourth season.
The two teams have had huge success in building
marketing and broadcast partnerships across
the border. Buczkowski had earlier predicted
that this new agreement would be done sooner
than later, and it has been.
The Blue Jays have had some front office
upheaval since the end of last season, Gone is
former General Manager Alex Anthopoulos,
who is widely hailed as the architect who
returned the Jays to the playoffs after a 22 year
absence. Now running the operation is Mark
Shapiro, who was at the helm with the Cleveland
Indians when they were the Bisons’ parent club.
Shapiro is widely known as someone who builds
up minor league organizations and stresses
winning at those levels. During Buffalo’s time
with Cleveland, the team won three league
championships and were playoff contenders
or in the hunt during the entire 14 year run
with the Indians. “Mark (Shapiro) is very
much aware of our long playoff drought,” said

changes. Protective netting has been extended
to the ends of both dugouts, in accordance with
new Major League Baseball guidelines. The
team is using a thinner, less obtrusive material
so as to minimize the viewing impact on fans
seated in those areas.

Additionally, the team has unveiled a couple
new food items. Rather than following recent
MLB trends and going overboard on some new
combo food concoction like corn dogs on a
stick dipped in Cheetos and peanut butter, the
team is putting an emphasis on local dishes and
Buffalo sourced ingredients. A new “Buffalocal”
concession stand will be unveiled behind section
100.
The fan favorite mascot race begins its 7th
year, and everyone is hoping that this will
be the season that Celery makes history and
finally breaks into the win column. While the
team is planning bobblehead giveaways for
Marcus Stroman (May 21) and Aaron Sanchez
(August 10), no word on a bobblehead day
for mascot Atomic Wing. Reports have leaked
out that Atomic is none too happy about being
dissed, following bobblehead events for all his
competitors in previous seasons. How will this
affect the races? Tune in to find out.
“We’re bringing back Star Wars night, we
have a full promotional schedule on tap with
something for everyone,” said Buczkowski. “It
all starts April 14 and hopefully good weather.”
In fact, the weather could not be more promising
for Opening Day and weekend. The team is
home for a four game set, Thursday through
Sunday.

Friday night’s performance caps a weeklong residency at UB by the company, which
has been conducting master classes with UB
dance students. Koresh Dance has also been
conducting workshops and did a lecture/
demonstration at the Buffalo Academy
for Visual and Performing Arts, as well as
a performance at Cloverbank Elementary
School in Hamburg.
Koresh is a physically athletic company that
combines modern, jazz, and ballet movements
but with the added spice of Yemenite Israeli
folk dance. The latter reflects Roni Koresh’s
early training with his mother, a folk dancer
in the Yemenite tradition.
Other experiences from Roni Koresh’s past
are also reflected in his work. As a young 20
year old dancer Koresh left Israel to come
to NYC and train with the famed Alvin Ailey
American Dance Theater. “Seeing Ailey’s
performances [in Israel] touched my heart,”
said Koresh. “They were so passionate and
real. I wanted to get to know these people.”
The time spent with Alvin Ailey allowed
Koresh to soak up the technical details of
classical ballet. At Alvin Ailey the dancing
adheres to the strict tenets of ballet combined
with the stylistic heritage of jazz and modern
dance. This attention to classical discipline is
seen in the incredible technical ability of the
Koresh dancers.
The next move for Koresh after Alvin Ailey
was Shimon Braun’s highly acclaimed Waves
Jazz Dance Company in Philadelphia [now

choreographer Ronen Koresh, it’s not
unusual to be turned away from sold
out performances by the company in its
hometown of Philadelphia. They tour
regularly both nationally and internationally
and the response to the company is so strong
its followers have been referred to as the Cult
of Koresh.

defunct]. Waves in the mid 1980s was like an
idea factory, fusing a variety of different dance
styles including belly dancing, street dancing,
ballet, jazz and modern. “My main attraction
to Waves,” said Koresh, “was that it was like
a family. It was like being with your brothers
and sisters, and Shimon was the guru of the
dance... he was in love with dance.”
News. “The perception of it to be sensual is
replaced by a whimsical approach.”
Koresh spent six productive years with
Waves before finally leaving to form his own
company in 1991. Since forming the company,
Roni has created a vast repertoire of over 40
works and continues to create new works each
year. The company also performs work by
guest choreographers including Donald Byrd
(Spectrum Dance Theater), Ohad Naharin
(Batsheva Dance Company), Robert Battle
(Battleworks/Alvin Ailey), Itzik Galili (Galili
Dance) and Paul Selwyn Norton.
It’s worth pointing out that for a very long time
the UB Center for the Arts has placed great
emphasis on developing dance audiences in
our community. They’ve been introducing
professional dance to children who otherwise
might not have the opportunity. Since 1997,
the Center has conducted more than 20
professional dance outreach projects to
provide arts education for more than 27,000
students at schools primarily in the City of
Buffalo. Western New York public school
students have been afforded the opportunity
to experience a live professional dance
performance in their schools, free of charge,
by some of the world’s finest companies.
In addition, UB dance majors benefit
from master classes with members of these
professional dance companies. We salute CFA
for their commitment to dance and salute the
support of the M&T Bank Dance Series.
Friday’s performance of “Mezze” at Center
for the Arts is a collection of dances from
recent repertory works; “Bolero” (2012),
“Promises I Never Meant to Keep” (2014)
and “Aftershock” (2015). The music selected
covers a wide range from Edith Piaf to Louis
Armstrong, John Zorn and more. The 90minute performance will feature 14 dances
including “8th Ave.,” set to Yemenite folk
music; “Chameleon,” a duet featuring former
Conservatory Dance Company star Vanessa
Guinto; Promises,” danced by Micah Geyer
and Melissa Rector; and the finale–Koresh’s
choreography of composer Maurice Ravel’s
“Bolero.”
“It is the exact opposite of what you think
‘Bolero’ should be,” Koresh told the Buffalo

with Batavia natives Joseph Cotler and
Robert Tyler dancing and UB graduate Peter
Jakubowski on hand as lighting designer.
The bottom line for any performance preview,
such as this, is how it answers the question “is
this a show worth seeing?” Jon Lehrer thinks
so. “I can’t even count how many times I’ve
seen them,” said Lehrer. “I would go and see
them when I was still dancing in Chicago,
before I came to Buffalo. My admiration for
them started long before I even had Lehrer
Dance here.”

HAMISTER MAY NEED MORE
TAXPAYER MONEY TO REVIVE
FAILED PROJECT

ccording to informed sources in the Buffalo
development community, Mark Hamister is
about $6 million short of the mark in financing
for his much-hyped $35.7 million Niagara Falls hotel
project on Rainbow Blvd. that was trumpeted by state
and local officials more than three years ago as the
city’s best hope to revive downtown.

State and local officials only talk about the longdelayed project in short clips, hinting something
may happen soon. Nothing has, and there’s no
sign of development activity at the prime parcel at
310 Rainbow Blvd. Now, according to our sources,
Hamister is looking for more state help in the already
heavily taxpayer subsidized project for the $6 million
he needs to close the deal, money that in fact would
amount to his own investment in the project which
he apparently doesn’t have available. Sources suggest
part of the problem is the $35.7 million he wants to
finance for a Hyatt Place many see as a $19 million
projet.
The Hamister hotel story is shrouded in secrecy
with none of the key parties, including Hamister,
willing to talk about why the project is so far behind
schedule that Canadian developer Michael DiCienzo
has called for the city and state to void the deal and
award development rights to his company, Niagara
Falls New York Hotel Management, LLC, so that
work could begin soon.
But despite the nearly four-year delay and no sign
of anything happening on the Hamister front,
state and local officials cling stubbornly to the
politically-connected Hamister who was awarded the
development rights in a secretive RFP process that
required bidders to have the financial resources to
complete the deal. Somehow, Hamister won the
rights despite the fact he obviously did not have the
financing in place while others, who may have been
ready to move forward, were passed over.
As I reported last month, DiCienzo, the Canadian
developer with a string of successes on both sides
of the border, called the failure of the Hamister

project “a complete joke,” and Niagara Falls Council
Chairman Andrew Touma also expressed frustration,
saying the lack of progress “is very disappointing.”
But nothing changes and the Niagara County
Industrial Development Agency (IDA) added to the
“:joke” last month by granting Hamister a six-month
extension on the $4.25 million in tax breaks even
after the Hamister group told the IDA that it has
yet to arrange financing. The state has committed a
$3.9 million grant (taxpayer money) to the Hamister
Group, but despite all the public help, the project
remains in limbo.
DiCienzo, whose family has reportedly spent $800
million on development on the Canadian side and
is now heavily invested on the U. S. side, upgrading
the Holiday Inn to a Sheraton ($34 million), says he’s
ready to go to work on the Rainbow Blvd. site if the
city tosses Hamister and gives him the green light.
And he’s not alone. A Buffalo developer, speaking
on the condition of anonymity, tells me that he knows
of a group of investors ready to pony up $30 million
in private money to develop the prime Niagara Falls
project if the opportunity presents itself.
It all begs the question of what’s more important:
holding on to the Hamister deal that so far as been
an embarrassing disaster for its backers, or pulling
the plug and finding developers who are ready to put
a shovel into the ground and give downtown Niagara
Falls a real development boost, maybe something
more than a business hotel.
It is all reminiscent of the Hamister folly of 2002 when
he and his partner were going to save the bankrupt
Buffalo Sabres for the city by buying the team, only
to back out when they couldn’t secure the public
money they needed to complete the deal. Here we
are again, 14 years later, with Hamister apparently not
willing or able to put any of his own money into the
Niagara Falls project and going hat in hand to the
state for more taxpayer money. When will somebody
finally blow the whistle on the failed project and turn
it over to a developer who actually has the resources
to do something at the prime site, something more
than put up a sign that something is in the wind.

ECC RESPONDS TO
CRITICAL STATE AUDIT WITH

The audit’s objective, according to the state
comptroller, “was to assess Board oversight
and management of College resources for the
period Sept. 1, 2013 through July 2, 2015,”
and the final report gave ECC a failing grade
and made 22 recommendations and a written
corrective action plan was requested from
college officials within 90 days, meaning the
due date was Tuesday, April 14.
A special meeting of the Board of Trustees on
Tuesday unanimously approved a corrective
action plan that addresses each of the
recommendations contained in the audit of
State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli, and now the
challenge will be for the board to find a way to
implement all of the changes it has submitted
in that response.
Among the highlights:
• While the hiring of senior staff is within
the purview of the president, any significant
financial decisions regarding senior executive
staff, including the creation of new positions,
should be and will be approved by the board
and recorded in the minutes.
• In the case of the creation of new positions,
such action should and will be initiated by the
submission of an employee hiring justification
form by the president of the college to the
board of trustees.
Among the findings in that blistering state
audit report was that ECC President Jack
Quinn created positions and handed out pay
raises and other financial benefits to senior
staff and certain employees without prior
approval of the board. The corrective action
plan, submitted by the audit review panel
under Chairman Dennis Murphy, would block
Quinn or any future president from taking
such action without board approval.
Other corrective action steps submitted in the
report include:
• The board of trustees will authorize
each senior executive staff position and
compensation change. Annually, the board
will receive details concerning each itemized
position through the college’s budget process.
Modifications to the approved budget would
need board approval and need to be recorded
in the minutes; and
• College management has completed steps
to recover any ECC funds determined as
improperly made to former employees.
In all, the audit review panel responded to each
and every one of the 22 recommendations
contained in the state audit, and as officials
confide, the challenge will now be to make
sure the corrective action plan is implemented
as completely as possible.
In his cover letter to the board, Chairman
Murphy, who is also a trustee, said the review
panel considers the comptroller’s findings “as
an opportunity to enhance top-down business
methods through best practice and policies
and procedure, responding appropriately
where it did not find agreement,” adding he
hopes the panel’s submission will be received
with “specific satisfaction” by the comptroller.
Brian Butry, a spokesman for Comptroller
DiNapoli, said the comptroller’s office will
review the corrective action plan submitted
Tuesday and “work with the college” where
possible.
Erie Community College is facing serious
financial challenges even as it seeks to show it is
responding positively to the highly critical state
audit that took 13 months to complete. As we
reported last month, declining enrollment, the
depletion of reserve funds, and quite possibly
the poor management of college resources will
likely lead to another tuition hike for students
of between $250 and $300, the third straight
tuition hike at the three-campus college.
It is also true that both state and county funding
for ECC falls short of the state formula for
community colleges, another of the challenges
facing the institution that is viewed as a valuable
contributor to local workforce development
when operating at full capacity. Unfortunately,
ECC’s enrollment has fallen significantly over
the last three years yet staff and security costs
continue to increase, a curious occurrence that
would seem to clearly support the state audit
findings of lax controls at the management
level. In other words, the staff has gotten bigger
even as the student population has declined.

ne of the works in the current
Nina Freudenheim Gallery show of
photographs by George Woodman is
called Hymn to Classicism. It consists of collageeffect vertical strips of various Greek or Roman
classical or classical revival sculptures, and one-one vertical strip--salon academic classicism
painting.
O
But most of the works in the show could be
called hymns to Classicism, which they reference
in various ways. Often by incorporating images
of classical sculpture--often signature classical
manner nude figural sculpture--or classical
architectural elements, a Corinthian order
capital, other architectural fragments. Sometimes
by including a nude--or partially nude--model in
conjunction with the nude sculptural figures. Or
sometimes just the nude or partially nude same
model. Or sometimes the model in street dress.
Or sometimes another model appearing only in
street dress, but often in photos or collage with
the sometimes nude or partially nude model.
All as classical reference, the play with the nudity
idea. One of the classical statues that shows up
in a couple of the works is the modesty Venus,
nude but as if caught by surprise in that state,
gesturing to hide her nudity, top and bottom.
These are large-format photographs of mixed
primary and secondary photos--the immediate
photo, the photo of the moment, incorporating
other photos--layered and juxtaposed so that
sometimes it’s hard to tell what imagery is
primary and what is secondary.
And very Italian. The number and variety of
classical statues is evocative of an Italian art
gallery, plus the titles of several works that include
sculptural images specify actual Italian galleries,
such as the Museo Nazionale del Bargello and
the Galleria Romanelli, both in Florence.
One of the Woodman photos is called Shrine for
a Saint. It features a carpentered sort of desk
organizer or wall rack with several receptacle
boxes and several prints of the same portrait
photo of a woman who could be any Italian
woman from the second half of the nineteenth
century or first half of the twentieth, and another
photo of another woman, turned slightly oblique-the photo not the woman--from the plane of the
primary photo, so obscured in that way. And not
clear what the relation--if any--to the woman in
the multiple photos.
Another photo called La Principessa Cowboy
Florentina is of the sometimes nude or partially
nude model, nude in this case except for a near-

miss version of a cowboy hat, straight out of a
spaghetti western.
The only explicitly non-Italian-reference work is
called Girl in Kimono. Actually two kimonos, or
almost. Putting on a black kimono over a white
one. Or maybe taking off the black one. All a bit
puzzling. She’s also missing her head--or rather,
we’re missing her head--which is cut off at the
top of the picture.
Woodman is an artist in various media, first
and foremost painting, then photography. In
addition, he has a major work on permanent
display in Buffalo--in the Delavan-Canisius
subway station--in the medium of painted tiles.

In an artist’s statement, Woodman talks about
his usual work process and usual work. “Most
days for the past sixty years,” he says, “I have
gone into my studio and made the art that I long
for. This has been a painter’s practice...Today
I make photographs in much the same way...
Pictures come into mind, are reflected upon,
often changed, surrendered to and eventually
realized...These photographs push themselves
into my world. I am usually happy to see
them, but sometimes saddened or perplexed.
Photography is like painting, but completely
different...”

Karen Schmid plays Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven on the fortepiano

n Saturday April 16 at 3pm, Karen Schmid,
an Oberlin Conservatory and Julliard
School graduate who is a professor of
piano at Canisius College will give a fortepiano
recital in Baird Hall on the UB Amherst Campus.
Karen describes herself as “a pianist whose
specialty is fortepiano. I also perform on the ‘big’
piano, and teach on it, primarily.”

She says that she first fell in love with the
fortepiano while a student at the Oberlin
Conservatory. “They acquired a
copy of a fortepiano, by Walter,
a Viennese builder around the
time of Mozart,” she says. “The
piano was placed in a practice
room and they let anyone have
at it. I spent hours on that piano,
marveling at the sound, the
musical revelations it provided,
and the degree of control I felt
I had, owing to the substantial
difference in touch. I also studied
later at Cornell with Malcolm
Bilson, the leading exponent of
early piano in America.

hammers, and had foot pedals by this time, which
enabled the performer to think of using the pedal
to connect measures and blend sounds more.
He experimented with using the knee lever in a
similar way when he returned, and you have two
unusual passages marked ‘open pedal’ which lets
the knee lever act like a foot pedal and create an
‘effect’ - just for fun. The slow movement’s theme
keeps returning in highly-ornamented and freely
expressive forms, while the final movement is
indicative of that musical humor Haydn is so

piece, which is approximately 28 minutes long,
is one of the longest of the composer’s sonatas
for piano, just behind the mighty Hammerklavier
Sonata, a work composed more than 20 years later
which takes 45-50 minutes to perform. “All the
movements are conceived on a
grand scale”, says Schmid. “It had
a nickname in the 19th century
‘Der Verliebte’, the one in love, and
is a mixture of brilliance, pathos,
and sentimental lyricism. Maybe
the Countess had something to
do with that?”
“I choose all of these sonatas
based upon the date of origin
of the UB fortepiano, a replica
of an instrument built in the
early 1790’s. All three composers
would have been familiar with
this exact type of piano, and
would have possibly owned one
built by the same builder, Anton
Walter, and wrote works with this
specific piano in mind. This was
their piano.”
“I would add that I wish all players
and listeners could hear or play
any piano work on the appropriate
piano it was conceived for. In
the 75 or so years of the pianos
ascendancy, it underwent many
changes, had numerous builders
in various parts of the world,
and composers were writing for
the instrument(s) they knew in
their world at the time of writing.
Mozart never knew any type of
piano but this one. Beethoven
knew many other pianos into
the 1820’s, since pianos changed
so much even in that 20-30 year period. It brings
great revelations to both the performer and
listener to hear and play what they heard and
played. You first of all understand the markings,
which are easily doable on early pianos, and
second of all you understand the texture in the
registers of the early pianos, which allowed voices
to speak equally.”

Presidents. This unique and highly entertaining graphic novel kicks off when
a misguided agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. turned necromancer decides to resurrect a cadre of
dead presidents in an attempt to fix the country. When his patriotic plan backfires,
things get ugly. After a highly publicized battle in which Captain America decapitates a
zombified Harry Truman, Deadpool is brought in to avoid any further disgrace of America’s most popular superheroes. To make things much more interesting, the ghost of Benjamin Franklin decides to help. The reanimated dead
presidents lack any sense of humanity, so they decide to spill the blood of the American people in order to wipe
the slate clean and start over. Deadpool matches wits with “Tricky Dick” Nixon, battles Ronald Reagan in orbit and
fights a bare-knuckle boxing match against “Honest Abe” Lincoln in Las Vegas. The clean lines, bright colors and
highly detailed artwork of Tony Moore, widely known for his work on The Walking Dead comic, capture the violent
hilarity perfectly. The comedic touches provided by co-author Brian Posehn will make you smile and laugh out loud!
Deadpool decides to solicit the help of a rather reluctant Dr. Stephen Strange after a rather gory battle with an

rredeemable was a horrifying take on the Superman concept: What if Superman’s
girlfriend unveiled his secret identity, leading the world’s most beloved hero to unleash
his inner sociopath on the world? In Insufferable, the creative team that brought you one
twisted tale now takes on another mythos, a thinly veiled Batman and Robin. Years ago,
following the death of his wife, Nocturnus revealed his identity to his son, who became his
sidekick, Galahad. A few years later, Galahad shattered their partnership, revealing their
secret identities in the process. The book’s description says it all: “What happens when your
crime-fighting sidekick grows up to be an arrogant, ungrateful douchebag who makes Kanye (West) look humble?” Today,

rtvoice caught up with Michele Ragusa shortly
after she completed a triumphant run as
the title character in Hello Dolly! at Riverside
Theatre in Vero Beach, Florida. From Broadway, to
Florida, to Kleinhans, the Western New York native
and Niagara University graduate works all the time.

On Friday, April 22, she returns to Buffalo for a
special one-night engagement in Kleinhans’ “Blue
Room.” Henry’s Restaurant downstairs at Kleinhans
will be transformed into an intimate cabaret for
the occasion. Dinner catered by Oliver’s begins at
6 p.m.; the performance at 8 p.m. Reservations are
required. Dinner-concert tickets are $125 each, with
VIP tables assigned on a first-come first-served basis.
A limited number of bar seats will be available for
$40.
A percentage of the ticket price is tax-deductible,
because part of the proceeds will benefit the
restoration and maintenance of Kleinhans Music
Hall. Take note: there is limited capacity, and a
previous Blue Room performance in October was
sold out.
With her glorious voice and radiant stage presence,
what can we expect to hear from Ragusa’s storied
Broadway career?
“Well ... nothing,” deadpans Ragusa with her famously
perfect comic delivery – the gift that attracted Mel
Brooks when she was selected to succeed Megan
Mullally in Young Frankenstein on Broadway.
Nothing?
“Think about it,” she says. “What can I do from
my Broadway career? Something from Young
Frankenstein or Titanic? A Urinetown medley?”
She’s got a point. Even her stint starring as Evelyn
Nesbit, the girl in the red velvet swing from Ragtime
offers little in the way of supper club entertainment.
“I’ve never put together a cabaret show from
beginning to end, before,” Ragusa reveals. She’s
done symphony concerts and musicals galore,
including appearances with the BPO – Funny Girl, Kiss
Me Kate, and The Music Man among them.

What we can expect is an evening of stories from
Ragusa’s life and career and selections from the
American songbook.
“I do have a childhood memory of an arrangement
done by my father that was performed by the BPO,”
Ragusa recalls. “I have many memories to call upon
for this show.”
Local performers Paul Todaro and Chuck Basil will
make appearances with Ragusa, and Buffalo native
Eric Alsford will serve as her accompanist on the
piano.
Among Ragusa’s recent activities, the Hello Dolly!
directed by James Brennan looms large.
“He was delighted when he found out that I had
never seen Hello Dolly! ” says Ragusa. “Not ever. Not
on stage and not even the film. [James Brennan]
was delighted that I would be starting fresh with no
preconceived ideas about how to play Dolly.”
The actress notes that a great deal of the original
conception of the show is apparent from its
structure.
“I was so surprised when I got entrance applause,”
she says. “But the role is structured as a star vehicle
and the audience picks up on the cue. It is a
beautifully constructed show.”
Ragusa will bring this familiarity with how to
entertain a crowd to “In the Spotlight with Michele
Rasa” in the Blue Room at Kleinhans.

From the start, Giovino channeled his
creativity by mastering the art of preparing
authentic Mexican cuisine. Gramma Mora’s
soon became a neighborhood treasure. When
the restaurant was first established, there
were no local purveyors who sold authentic
Mexican ingredients like the tortillas, spices
and especially the Chili peppers that Giovino
needed to make his dishes perfect. Giovino
gathered his ingredients from Albuquerque,
New Mexico and other places in the Southwest
and Mexico, itself.
After 17 years, Gramma Mora’s tenure on
Niagara St. came to an end abruptly one
day in July 1996 after a fire devastated the
restaurant, leaving only their trademark
Gramma Mora’s sign untouched. Shortly
after, Giovino relocated the restaurant to
their current, bustling Hertel Ave. location,
and the sign that once adorned the Niagara
St. restaurant now crowns their restaurant at
1465 Hertel Ave.
Gramma Mora’s red sauce is prepared using
red chiles grown specially and handpicked in
Albuquerque, New Mexico for the restaurant,
which adds to the authenticity of this
delicately hot Mexican favorite. Their robust
and nourishing homemade green chile
sauce provides a sensation of heat combined
with a picante burst of flavor. The sauces are
carefully crafted by Giovino, drizzled atop
tacos, tamales, enchiladas, and chimichangas,
which in turn are filled with succulent strips
of beef and chunks of chicken or pork.

Gramma Mora’s has a full bar; their specialty
is the margarita. In fact, Monday is “Margarita
Monday” and Happy Hour specials are varied

The appetizer selection is large and includes
not only an array of nachos, but chili con
queso (cheese dip with Mexican sausage and
tortillas), chile relleno, chimichangas (rolled
in a flour tortilla filled with your choice of
meat), and pork tamales.
The homemade guacamole, made fresh
to order, is buttery and mild, with luscious
chunks of fresh avocados.
Then there are the shrimp dishes for which
Gramma Mora’s is justly famous: the arroz con
camarones (large shrimp pan seared in garlic
sauce) and camarones fajita are served with
rice, beans and guacamole. Both are exquisite
dishes.
Of course, Gramma Mora’s authentic menu
includes all the traditional and well-loved
dishes: quesadillas, enchiladas, burritos, tacos,
tamales, fajitas, tostadas and chorizo, but they
offer a fare far more sophisticated than the

Shea’s Performing Arts Center President
Anthony Conte, who will retire at the end of the
current season, will be honored with the Career
Achievement Award at the 26th Annual Artie
Award Ceremony. The event will take place on
Monday, June 6th at 710 Main Theatre. This
will be the first Artie night in many years not
to feature the talent of music director Michael
Hake, who died in December. This year, Allan
Paglia will step in as music director.
Congratulations to Saul Elkin who is the winner
of a Spark Award for Lifetime Achievement.
Presented by the Arts Service Initiative of WNY,
the 3rd annual awards ceremony will be held
on May 25th, 5:40 to 8:30 p.m. at Hotel @ The
Lafayette.
Up next at the Paul Robeson Theatre, Detroit
67, a play by Dominique Morisseau set during
the race riots in Detroit in 1967. Directed by
Aaron Moss, the production will star Gary-Cayi
Fletcher, Candace Whitfield, Heather Reed,
Shabar Rouse, and Annette Christian. The show
will run May 6th – 29th.
Kevin Craig, Jamie Nablo, Wendy Hall, Peter
Palmisano, Steve Vaughan, and Pamela Rose
Mangus will star in the Kavinoky’s 2016-17 season
opener Don’t Talk to the Actors, written and directed
by Tom Dudzick. The season will also include
Arthur Miller’s A View from the Bridge, a revival
of The 39 Steps, and Grounded, a one woman
play about an ace fighter pilot whose career is
ended early due to an unexpected pregnancy.
The Tenth Annual Kavinoky Kavalcade, the
American Repertory Theater of WNY kicks
off its 10th season in September with the punk
rock musical American Idiot with music by Green
Day. The show was nominated for a 2010 Best
Musical Tony Award. Buffalonian Brian Charles
Johnson was in the original Broadway cast. The
local production will be directed by Matthew
LaChiusa with music direction by Billy Horn.
The company’s season will also include Halley
Feiffer’s comedy How to Make Friends and then
Kill Them, directed by Maura Nolan; comedian
Steve Martin’s The Underpants, directed by Jeffrey
Coyle; and Martin McDonagh’s A Behanding in
Spokane, starring Thomas LaChiusa. By the way,
Steve Martin has written the book and music for
the current new Broadway musical Bright Star.
In the meantime, Canisius College Little Theatre
will present its own production of American Idiot,
April 21st-23rd at the Marie Maday Theatre
on the college campus, under the direction of
Nicolette Navarro and Matt Lunghino.
And now for something somewhat different,
Road Less Traveled introduces Buffalo Stories, “a
glimpse into the lives of Buffalo’s most intriguing
personalities.” Up first, former Buffalo Mayor
Anthony Masiello. The company will present a
theatrical performance of Masiello’s life, written
by Jon Elston and Phil Farugia, directed by Doug
Zschiegner. This fundraising event will take place
on June 4th beginning at 7 p.m. with Masiello in
attendance.
The national tour of the musical If/Then is
now playing (through May 8th) at the Princess
of Wales in Toronto, starring Anthony Rapp
reprising his 2014-15 Broadway performance.
The national tour of Curious Incident of the Dog in
the Night-Time, winner of the 2015 Tony for Best
Plays, will open Rochester’s Broadway Season
September 27th-October 2nd.
Patty Duke (pictured below) died on March 29th
at 69. She made her Broadway debut in 1959 in
The Miracle Worker and returned to Broadway in
2002 to play Aunt Eller in the revival of Oklahoma!
I saw her play Phyllis in Sondheim’s Follies. We

he Buffalo Niagara Film Festival is merely
ten years old and has already emerged as
one of the region’s signature cultural events,
attracting hundreds of directors, actors, producers,
and writers from New York, Los Angeles, Toronto,
and far-flung corners of the world.

When they convene at the Tonawanda Castle
this weekend, they will be doing much more
than screening provocative, insightful, and often
brilliant independent films and shorts. The festival

some of the industry’s most avant-garde directors,
quirkiest writers, and most beautiful actors.
Increasingly, the Buffalo Niagara Film Festival
is mentioned alongside other festivals such as
Sundance, Atlanta, Ann Arbor and the Toronto
Film Festivals – earning our region priceless
prestige that is propelling the local film industry
more catalytically than any government funded
commission or tax credit ever could.
Hoyt Richards is just one example of the caliber
of expert talent that has lifted the festival to
international prominence, among hundreds of
others expected.

His film Intersection is about a guilt-ridden man (Hoyt
Richards) who blames himself for the accidental
death of his only child and meets a mysterious
and beautiful woman (Anabella Casanova) in
the same remote town where the fateful car crash
occurred. There is a spark between them. But she
also carries a dark past. Do second chances come
with a price?
Intersection (Dauntless Studios) is written, directed,
and stars Hoyt Richards himself in the emotional
and moving film – chosen as an official selection
of the festival. Not only will attendees have an
opportunity to attend the Friday screening at 4 pm,
but will also have a chance to engage with Richards,
who will be hosting a panel discussion delving
into distribution opportunities and challenges
often encountered by independent filmmakers.
Intersection is an official selection to over seventy
film festivals and won over sixty awards – including
25 for Best Picture and 12 for Best Actor.
The four-day celebration is already underway,
with festivities scheduled to conclude on Sunday,
April 17th with an awards ceremony dedicated to
local fallen soldiers of the Iraq and Afghanistan
wars. Celebrity guests and presenters will include
Stephen Lang (Avatar, Conan, Tombstone), Larry
Bishop (Underworld, Kill Bill 2, Mad Dog Time, Hell
Ride), Frank Dux (Bloodsport, Lionheart, The Quest),
Stanley Isaacs (Raptor Island, Gross Anatomy), Jon

Van Ness (The Natural, Brubaker, The Postman Always
Rings Twice, The Hitcher), Barry Kivel (The Natural,
Bound, Crocodile Dundee, One Fine Day) and others.
“The judging is run by committees, and we try
to break it up into some local experts and some
celebrity guests, some have yet to be named and
some of the bigger names will remain anonymous
to ensure integrity in the process,” says Bill Cowell,
the founder and Executive Director of the festival.
Lobbying judges – who vary from local filmmakers,
LA writers, Toronto directors, industry guys
from New York, and foreign producers – won’t
work. There are committees specific to each
genre overseeing the scoring and judging of
submissions.
Awards range from Best Feature, Best Short,
Best Animated Film, Best Foreign Film, Best
Documentary; Best Actor, Best Actress, Best
Director, Best Screenwriter; as well as for technical
categories such as cinematography and editing.
A special award – and perhaps the region’s most
anticipated – is given for Best Western New York
Film (dubbed The Falls Award).
“The first thing we’re looking for is quality and
creativity. They’re so many categories, as we grow
and get bigger things always get more exciting,”
Cowell says.
Kicking off the Sunday lineup at 1:30pm will be
the screening of Kandahar Journal, a seventy-six
minute documentary about a photojournalist who
reflects on the events behind his psychological
transformation after covering front line combat in
Kandahar, Afghanistan from 2006 to 2010.
Then from 3pm to 4:20pm there will be a
special showing of Beyond Glory, an eighty minute
documentary which follows acclaimed actor
Stephen Lang as he tracks the ten year odyssey
behind his one-man show about eight medal of
honor recipients. Lang will appear with director
Larry Brand for questions and answers afterwards.
The BNFF’s 2016 Lifetime Achievement Award
recipient will be industry legend (and Cowell’s close
longtime friend and mentor) Dick Delson. One of
the most celebrated writer, publicist, and industry
strategist of his time, Delson has been credited
with over 300 Academy Award Nominations and
over 100 wins between all his clients over the years,
having campaigned for American Graffiti, Jaws,
Rocky, Lord of the Rings, Air Force One, Chicago, Gangs
of New York, and hundreds more.

he Tonawanda Castle is the host of the 2016 Buffalo-Niagara Film Festival with
over 100 movies and shorts on three different screens. In addition, executive director Bill Cowell offers workshops to help filmmakers and artists learn their craft
from experts. From 10am to 10pm on Friday, The Animation Workshop brings together
artists of all disciplines to create an animated short for a local organization. My Animated Life’s 24 hour challenge allows artists to go through the entire pipeline with industry
professionals and must produce 15 seconds of animation using techniques and messaging defined by a client. You don’t have to be a filmmaker to attend the festival and with
3 screens running at the same time, Film buffs can decide what to view all five days. It is
the Filmgoer/Artist event of the year. Enjoy!

Nicolo Amati violin, once owned by the violinist Louis Krasner. She

GHOST
Ghost is a Heavy Metal band from Sweden formed in
2008. Ghost is easily recognizable because of its eccentric
on-stage presence. Fve of the group’s members wear identical face-concealing costumes. The most distinguishable
member is the vocalist, who calls himself Papa Emeritus.
He wears a prosthetic face with skull face paint. The band
members are known as the Nameless Ghouls and their real
names have not been publicly disclosed. Ghost’s Satanic
theme has caused their albums to be banned from major chain stores, most late night TV shows and most commercial radio stations despite winning the Grammy Award
in 2016 for Best Heavy Metal Performance. One of the
Nameless Ghouls said “So, yes, mainstream America is absolutely welcoming us with open legs.” Wow!

you are always suffering. If you resist confusion, you
are always confused. We think that we resist certain
states because they are there, but actually they are

hope so, because the key to dissipating at least some
of the dicey stuff that has been tweaking you lately is
to STOP RESISTING IT!
SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): During every election
season, media pundits exult in criticizing candidates
who have altered their opinions about important issues. This puzzles me. In my understanding, an intelligent human is always learning new information about
how the world works, and is therefore constantly
evolving his or her beliefs and ideas. I don’t trust people who stubbornly cling to all of their musty dogmas. I bring this to your attention, Scorpio, because
the coming weeks will be an especially ripe time for
you to change your mind about a few things, some of
them rather important. Be alert for the cues and clues
that will activate dormant aspects of your wisdom. Be
eager to see further and deeper.

In accordance with the astrological omens, Sagittarius, I invite you to engage in an equally brave and
celebratory re-evaluation of some of your earlier life
and work.
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): “Go back to where
you started and learn to love it more.” So advised
Thaddeus Golas in his book The Lazy Man’s Guide
to Enlightenment. I think that’s exactly what you
should do right now, Capricorn. To undertake such a
