INNOVATION REIGNS
Vibrant, dynamic and game-changing – this is our industry. The consumer electronics (CE) industry is known for innovation in design, software
apps, production efficiencies and marketing. Driven by creative entrepreneurs, our thriving $186-billion industry continually reinvents itself.
The 2,000+ member companies of the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) develop, market, promote and sell the products and services
that entertain, inform and connect consumers. And CEA’s 2,500+ Tech Enthusiast members are some of the core technology adopters that
absolutely love CE gadgets.
Spurred by sales of ground-breaking new products, the CE
industry bounced back from a challenging year in 2009. The
year began with the industry consensus that 2010 sales would
increase by less than one percent. By summer, however, the
forecast was revised to a three percent rise, and a strong fourth
quarter and holiday season doubled that estimate. In just
12 months, the CE industry regained the losses of a historic
economic downturn to return to prosperity.
Hot CE product categories like tablets, eReaders and
smartphones led the way along with 3DTV, which captured the
attention of the media. While it was difficult to live up to media
expectations, 1.1 million 3DTV sets were sold in 2010 with a
solid projection of 1.9 million this year and 10 million by 2014.
CEA addresses issues confronting the industry in the nation’s
capital and state houses, striving to protect our industry’s
ceaseless innovation. Spectrum allocation is at the forefront.
Our industry needs more spectrum for today’s wireless
devices as well as the new products yet to be introduced.
CEA encourages Congress and the FCC to move forward with
spectrum auctions.
CEA is a leader in addressing environmental issues, especially
end-of-product life disposal and energy efficiency. CEA
promotes national voluntary efforts by manufacturers in the
face of a patchwork quilt of local laws. CE products are more
energy efficient than ever before. For example, manufacturers

Another big story centered on connected TVs with the
convergence of the Internet and television. This trend will have
a profound effect on how people interact with their televisions
and consume content. CEA expects that 40 percent of sets will
include Internet connectivity by 2014.

Growing the Industry
CEA continues its mission to grow the industry by providing
research, support and standards, by working with legislators
and regulators and by staging the premiere tradeshow for our
industry and its products – the International CES.
Tech Enthusiasts, a group of consumers who share a passion
sector innovation and competition, not by government
mandates.
This year CEA also created a new membership category: CEA
for consumer electronics. These members can take advantage
of partner discounts, beta testing, a sense of community and
information sharing with experts and other members of the
network.
A Significant Milestone
CEA published its first book in 2011, The Comeback: How
Innovation Will Restore the American Dream (Comeback-book.
com) which became a New York Times bestseller. Released
at the 2011 International CES (in what FCC Chairman Julius
Genachowski called the world’s largest book launch party), the
book builds on CEA’s public policy agenda and the principles
of CEA’s Innovation Movement and asserts that America’s
comeback starts with innovation.
The Comeback supports CEA’s Innovation Movement
(innovation-movement.com) that was launched in 2009 and
has attracted more than 100,000 Americans who believe
that innovation is the backbone of our economy and the
foundation of our future prosperity. Innovation Movement
members advocate for pro-innovation, pro-business policies,
namely federal deficit reduction, skilled immigration reform,
ubiquitous broadband development and passage of free trade
agreements.
Innovation creates jobs, markets and new industries where
none existed before. Most important, innovation moves us
forward as a nation, pushing us to succeed and strive for
a better tomorrow. To return innovation to the center of
America’s economic policy, The Comeback recommends:
• Open American products to markets through free trade
agreements.
• Obtain additional spectrum for wireless broadband.
• Cut government spending and restore sanity to America’s
fiscal policy.
CEA has helped to define and promote a national agenda. We
have not asked for special funding. We did not advocate nor
support the stimulus packages, bailouts, cash for clunkers or
first-time home buyer’s credit. We may be the only association
that has embraced the findings of the bi-partisan deficit
commission. In Washington, where every group is paid to fight
for their special interest, we have defined our interest as the
long-term health of the U.S. economy.
During our annual CES on the Hill event in May, CEA member
company executives and CEA staff went to Capitol Hill with the
latest innovation in policymaker education: The Comeback as
the first video-in-print brochure designed specifically to convey
these key messages. The brochure delivered CEA’s message
about the need for pro-innovation, pro-business policies to
restore the American dream. Developed and manufactured
by Los Angeles-based Americhip Inc. (a CEA member), the
brochure included an interactive video player with five ondemand videos to educate policymakers about CEA’s Innovation
Movement and public policy agenda. The brochure also was
given to think-tanks, policy influencers and media.
The International CES
At the 2011 International CES exhibitors and attendees alike
were buzzing with energy, enthusiasm and a belief that
consumer electronics would provide the spark to generate
economic recovery. After all, plasma TV, HDTV DVR, HD
radio, OLED TV, 3D HDTV, connected TV, mobile DTV,
eReaders, smartphones and tablets all were technologies that
debuted at the International CES – today these products are
in homes worldwide. Consumers embrace CE products and
technologies for their value, terrific prices and the information,
entertainment and connections that they provide.
This year CES was recognized independently by Trade Show
Executive magazine as the greenest show among the 100 largest
shows in the country. And for the first time in 14 years, the
World Electronics Forum (WEF) was hosted at CES. The WEF
is a forum for global electronics industry leaders. This year
participants got a special briefing from our nation’s highest
Our job as leaders is to focus on a long-term strategy. By doing
so, we have shaped the International CES, planned for HDTV,
fought copyright owner challenges to recording technologies
and battled for free trade. Today, our long-term planning is
focused on obtaining a national recycling policy, ensuring new
spectrum be made available for new products and wireless
broadband and, most critically, that we have a healthy U.S.
economy within which we can sell our products and services.
It is innovation and our products which give cause for
optimism. The products we produce continue to transform the
world, create jobs and encourage commerce. As we enter this
new decade, we are challenged to do what we do best – innovate,
create and sell products and services which deliver, delight and
display. Please join with us.
trade official: U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk.
Also at CES this year, in partnership with the Las Vegas
Convention and Visitors Authority, we added the “Las Vegas
Convention & World Trade Center” name to the Las Vegas
Convention Center. CEA is proud to own the rights to this
powerful indicator of the importance of trade, and to affix it to
the building that reinforces the message that tradeshows means
global business.
Going Forward
The exhilaration of CES has been tempered with the reality that
the Mideast is in turmoil, the tragedy in Japan and the tornados
and floods in the U.S., and the fact that our politicians are facing
the daunting challenge of focusing on our long-term national
interest as they struggle with short-term budget issues.

THE INTERNATIONAL CES SHINES
The International CES is the premier place to view the latest consumer technologies. Industry professionals and the media come for four days to see the newest products ready to hit retail
shelves and those still in prototype form, and learn what these developments mean for business in the comprehensive CES keynote and conference sessions. They also come to meet
with colleagues and build new business relationships.
But CES is much more than that – the anticipation and excitement for the world’s largest consumer technology show builds
all year. More than 149,529 industry professionals attended the
2011 International CES – The Global Stage for Innovation, owned
and produced by CEA. They came to see products and services
from more than 2,700 technology companies. The show set a new
record with more than 30,000 attendees who traveled from outside
the U.S. and more than 80 international delegations.
CONSUMER ELECTRONICS ASSOCIATION CE.org
The 2011 CES spanned global industries including technology,
automotive and entertainment markets. Hot tech trends from
the CES show floor included the launch of more than 80 tablets,
wireless 4G LTE, connected TV technologies, smart appliances –
featured for the first time in show history – and electric vehicles.
And Ford’s Alan Mulally unveiled the company’s first electric car
at CES with its Ford Focus Electric.
4
CES broke a record in 2011 with 22 top CEOs participating in
keynotes including Microsoft’s Steve Ballmer, Verizon’s Ivan
Seidenberg, Audi’s Rupert Stadler, Samsung’s Boo-Keun Yoon,
CEA’s Gary Shapiro, Ford’s Alan Mulally, Netflix’s Reed Hastings,
Cisco’s John Chambers, Xerox’s Ursula Burns and GE’s Jeffrey
Immelt. These executives were joined onstage by such leaders
as Comcast’s Brian Roberts, Time Warner Cable’s Glenn Britt,
Dreamworks Animation’s Jeffrey Katzenberg and Hulu’s Jason
Kilar. The CES conference program was packed with 250 sessions
and 900 speakers.
TechZones at the 2011 International CES
One way to see a broad selection of technologies at the International CES is to visit the 28 themed areas of the show floor, known as
TechZones. These areas group both new and existing technology
markets together on the show floor to give attendees a convenient
way to experience the hottest products.
As the relationship between technology and the content community continues to grow, CES featured a new program, Entertainment Matters, designed for the Hollywood community. The
program featured a keynote panel with leaders from Microsoft,
Coca-Cola, Akamai Technologies, Interpublic Group and WPP.
CES also attracted government leaders from the U.S. and around
the world including two U.S. cabinet secretaries, U.S. Trade Representative Ambassador Ron Kirk, U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gary
Locke, the FCC Chair and four Commissioners.
iLounge Pavilion
Returning for another successful year was the iLounge® Pavilion,
sponsored by iLounge.com. The iLounge Pavilion is the must-visit
location on the show floor for all things Apple-related. The 50,000
net square feet of exhibit space for the iLounge Pavilion at the 2011
International CES was double the size of the previous year. Fantastic third-party accessories for Apple devices from more than 100
exhibitors were on display.
More than 5,000 media were present to report live from the show
floor each day and there was an exceptional buzz in the social media world with more than 158,000 CES-related tweets and 11,000
page views on CEA’s Digital Dialogue blog.

ENCOURAGING INNOVATION
With more than 2,000 members, CEA represents the consumer technology industry on public policy issues in Washington. During the year, government officials at the national and state
level consider laws and regulations that impact the CE industry. CEA advocates the industry’s pro-innovation position to state and federal lawmakers, regulatory officials and the courts.
CEA and its Innovation Movement focus on policy issues
crucial to innovation such as:
CONSUMER ELECTRONICS ASSOCIATION CE.org
Spectrum and Mobile Broadband
CEA believes that in the 21st century economy, spectrum is
the oxygen of innovation. CEA strongly supports legislative
efforts to authorize the FCC to conduct voluntary incentive
auctions of underused broadcast spectrum to secure 500 MHz
of additional spectrum for broadband and avoid the looming
spectrum shortfall. More, CEA believes that any additional
spectrum should be available for both licensed and unlicensed
use.
8
eCycling
CEA and CE industry leaders have recently launched the
eCycling Leadership Initiative, an industry-wide electronics
recycling commitment to recycle one billion pounds of
electronics annually by 2016, more than a threefold increase
over 2010. The eCycling Leadership Initiative also seeks to
improve consumer awareness of the more than 5,000 collection
sites currently sponsored by industry, increase the amount
of electronics recycled responsibly, increase the number of
collection opportunities available and provide transparent
metrics on eCycling efforts.
Free Trade Agreements
CEA supports the passage of free trade agreements with Korea,
Colombia and Panama. These agreements will open new
markets to U.S. products, create American jobs and increase
America’s global competitiveness.
Skilled Immigration Reform
Innovative immigrants have always been and will continue
to be central to America’s growth, job creation and global
competitiveness. CEA supports skilled immigration policies
to attract the best and the brightest to the United States, such
as H1B visa reform that would enable foreign graduates of
U.S. schools to become American employees and add to the
wealth of this nation as well as a quick path to citizenship for
entrepreneurs.
Energy Efficiency
CEA favors voluntary, market-oriented programs and
initiatives, including industry-led standards. Experience shows
that such market-driven programs are a proven and successful
approach to advancing energy efficiency in consumer
electronics. CEA works cooperatively with governments in
the development of energy efficiency initiatives and opposes
mandates that stifle innovation, reduce consumer choice, and
limit product features and services.
ENERGY STAR Program
CEA has long supported ENERGY STAR as the most effective
and proactive program to encourage consumers to make more
energy-conscious choices. Home electronics were responsible
for 59 percent of the energy savings achieved by the program
for residential products in 2008, according to a recent report
by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). CEA is
concerned, however, that EPA’s recently mandated changes to
ENERGY STAR are creating unreasonable burdens for partners
and harming international expansion of the program.
Online Infringement
CEA supports strong intellectual property enforcement, and
balanced intellectual property law, that protects the rights
of authors and inventors while preserving and encouraging
innovation. CEA members share concerns about theft of
intellectual property, including trademarks, patents and
copyrights. However, it is important to ensure that antiinfringement efforts do not inadvertently ensnare legitimate
manufacturers, retailers and online service providers.
Accessibility
CEA supports industry-driven solutions to ensure innovative
technologies and services are accessible to persons with
disabilities.
CEA keeps members up-to-date on legislation and lobbies
to promote and protect the industry’s interests. Services and
opportunities include:

INNOVATION: POWERING THE COMEBACK
Safe Driving
CEA is completely committed to the principle that safety is
paramount and a driver’s highest priority must be safe control
of the vehicle at all times. CEA has supported state legislation
imposing limits on the use of in-vehicle electronics to ensure
driver safety. At the same time, however, policymakers must
recognize that many in-vehicle electronics can contribute
significantly to driver and roadway safety.

UNITING THE INDUSTRY
An integral part of the CE industry technical standards not only provide CE manufacturers with a framework for establishing compatibility between devices, but they also provide a roadmap for where the
industry is headed. The success of new technologies often is based in industry acceptance and interoperability, which is established through collaboration via a standards-setting body. By testing, tweaking and challenging new technologies, the industry strives to mold the very best into industry standards. This migration path enhances the opportunity for new technologies to achieve widespread market
deployment and interoperability with enabling products and services.
The rapid pace of innovation drives CEA’s Technology & Standards department constantly to look at new developments that will benefit from the standards-setting process. This year, a host of new
projects initiated in T&S related to the latest technologies, have the promise to fuel future industry growth.

Tech Events
CEA hosts the Technology & Standards Forums to bring
together the experts and leaders of the technical committees
that develop the standards and related documents which
shape the industry’s progress. The forums provide a common
venue for technology professions to share ideas and chart
strategy for future innovation. Attendees debate, develop
and finalize crucial CE standards using CEA’s streamlined
standards development process which is accredited by the
American National Standards Institute.
Participants also learn from developers who share their
insider knowledge on emerging technologies. This process
allows the industry to establish technology development
roadmaps from a variety of perspectives, and ensures that
experts can employ their knowledge to address the complex
problems typical of early, cutting-edge technologies.
CEA’s PlugFest events help the industry migrate from standards on paper to products that work together. Hundreds of
designers and engineers bring early development products to
the CEA sponsored events. CEA PlugFests focus on product
connectivity and interoperability. They encourage manufacturers to come together and test interfaces in a semi-private,
round-robin fashion. Designers can sort out connectivity
issues between different manufacturers before products
get into consumers’ hands. Recent PlugFests have focused
on CEA-861 (HDMI/HDCP) interfaces and the ATSC A/153
Mobile DTV standard.

Using Standards to Address National Challenges
Technical standards play an important role as federal
agencies tackle a range of pressing problems, such as
developing a modern electrical grid, promoting energy
efficiency and energy independence, and modernizing
communications networks. It has long been government
policy that federal agencies must look to voluntary consensus
standards, like those written by CEA, to meet these needs.
It is more important than ever that federal agencies work
effectively with the private sector to ensure that meaningful
standards can be in place to meet urgent national needs.
To that end, the U.S. Chief Technology Officer (CTO) is
encouraging federal agencies to identify their standards
needs, define their approach to working with industry and
standards organizations and support adoption of industry-led
standards by markets.
The U.S. CTO and U.S. Chief Information Officer (CIO) have
established a Subcommittee on Standards under the National
Science and Technology Council’s Committee on Technology.
This interagency group will provide high-level leadership,
so federal agencies are strategically focused and actively
engaged on critical standards-related issues. The improved
coordination will, in turn, ensure that agencies can work in a
responsive and timely fashion with the private sector so that
effective standards are developed and put into practice to
meet the nation’s needs.
The federal government is committed to working in close
partnership with industry, standards organizations, and
the public to ensure that the technologies needed to address
the urgent challenges facing the U.S. are developed and are
interoperable with related technologies.

In April, CE industry leaders launched
the first-ever, industry-wide electronics
recycling initiative to recycle one billion pounds of electronics
annually by 2016, which would be more than a threefold increase
over 2010. The eCycling Leadership Initiative (http://ecyclingLeadershipInitiative.com ) seeks to improve consumer awareness
of the more than 5,000 collection sites sponsored by the industry,
increase the amount of electronics recycled responsibly, increase
the number of collection opportunities available and provide
transparent metrics on eCycling efforts. One billion pounds of
electronics, if not properly recycled, would fill about 88.9 million
cubic feet, equivalent to an entire 71,000-seat NFL stadium.
