In 1848 Jacob Wiss, a Swiss instrument maker ,
opened a modest shop in Bank Street, Newa rk , N. J .
H e began to forge out instruments and a few pairs
of shea rs- a trade he had learned thorough ly in
Europe. He worked slowly and with infinite care,
and present ly people began to say Wiss Shears were
the best they had ever used.
T here was good reason for this approbat ion , fo r Wiss
Shears were so well made t hat , after mo re t han 50
years of serv ice, some of the first pa irs eve r produced
are sti ll in service.
Slowly the Wiss enterprise grew; and in 1887, a sma ll
part of the present factory was built. It was devoted
exclus ively to the manufacture of fine shears and scissors, and soon it was crowded to capaci ty.
To-day the factories of]. Wiss & Sons Company are
the largest of their kind in the world- and one of the
pri ncipal reasons for their prodigious growth is a firm
adherence to the pol icy of J acob Wiss to produce
nothing but goods of t he highest quality.

O the average man or woman , one pa ir of shears is very
much like a nother. As a matter of fact , there is a vast
d ifference between Wiss Shea rs and t hose of inferior
make; and we beli eve it is worth while to brieAy descri be our
more important operat ions. I f the dea ler is acqua inted with
these points , he can eas ily satisfy his customers of t he superior
qua li ty of Wiss Shears; and also see fo r himself why t his qua li ty
m eans a better investment. We recommend t ha t both dea lers
and their clerks fa mil iarize t hemselves with these deta ils, as

FRAME
Th e frame of Wiss
Shears is forged from a
very tough special forging steel under a powerfu l
drop-hammer. This steel
is used because it renders
the frame practica lly unbreakable, and because its
toughness and pliability
in t he initial stages of
manufacture permit the
permanent adjustment
so necessary to smooth
cutting blades.
It also makes it possible
to mou ld the handles to exactly the correct shape. You
can hammer , bend, and t wist
the handles of Wiss Shears
and still not break them .

we produce shears that will

for yea rs- with handles properly fitted to the hand- and

This is of great importa nce, for
whenever there is even a slight
d ifference in temper, the harder
blade will wear into the softer
one, greatly shortening the Jife of
the shears, and no amount of
grinding or sharpen ing can ever
remedy this condition.
It is largely because of t heir
evenly tempered blades t hat Wiss
Shears last a lifetime.

Expert finishers take each one and adjust the blades so
that they come together in a perfectly straight line with
an even tension . The cutting qualities are then thoroughly tested to make sure that the finishing has been
done properly .
The shears are now ready for their final inspection. They
are gone over carefully, and should any defects be discovered, that pai r is promptl y d iscarded, for no shears
that are imperfect are ever branded "WISS" .

WISS CANTILEVER SPRING
The Wiss Cantilever Spring is an improved attachment which
exerts a constant even tension on the blades from heel to
points at all times , keeping the cutting edges close together,
and adds considerably to the cutting ability.
It has been found particu la rly successful when cutting fine texture fabrics like rayon silk.
1t is furnished at slight extra cost on certain sizes of large
trimmers. (See pages 14 and 17.)
W rss SIMPLEX SHEAR BoLT
The Wiss Simplex Bolt was designed so as to readily allow
tailors· shears to be taken apart to remove lint and dust which
collects under the bolt. It has only two parts and is quickly
and correctly assemb led. There are no levers or springs, and
a turn of the small adjusting screw in the nut gives exactly
the required tension. The Wiss Simplex Bolt is furnished with
Wiss "N" pattern Tailors· Shears when so ordered , without
extra charge.

Wiss pruning shears number II 0-V or 11 0-B will snip
a broom handle. This gives you an idea of their remarkable strength . They will outlast a dozen pruners
