Last week, Delta Air Lines aban- doned an attempt to hike prices when no other carrier matched the move. That’s a major reason why IATA developed the New Distribution Capability for its members, according to the Business Travel Coalition. The airlines themselves have confirmed publicly that the current transparent airfare model has constrained their ability to raise airfares.” BTC added that this new business model would also violate the privacy rights of consumers. “Under the Resolution 787 the airlines have agreed among themselves that they have the right to demand that extraordinarily intrusive personal data about specific consumers be broadcast to all airlines that might offer service, even though consumers in most cases enter into a contract of carriage with just one of those airlines. Resolution 787 on its face (Section 3.1.1) explicitly says that before they quote prices for a consumer the airlines have the right to demand from consumers personal information that ‘includes but is not limited to’ the customer’s: name, age, marital status, nationality, contact details (including e-mail address), PM40015622 2 08 TW_March14_2013.indd 1 13-03-11 11:50 AM Enough Said RMA:M MABLBLMH<>KMB? As set forth in the preamble of this Resolution, all IATA airlines that choose to distribute ‘enhanced content’ (an undefined term but overtly one that means when an consumers to anonymously comparison shop and then purchase through intermediaries such as brick-and-mortar and online travel agencies, or via their websites. The ‘AF’ code is now on select WestJet flights connecting from Toronto to Vancouver, Edmonton, Saskatoon, Regina, Thunder Bay, Ottawa, Quebec City, St. John’s, Moncton and Halifax. Winnipeg and Calgary flights also bear the French carrier’s code for both Toronto and Montreal connections to Air France’s direct flights to Paris. This is the ninth codeshare agreement for WestJet which, additionally, has 21 interline relationships. “WestJet and Air France have had an interline arrangement since July 2009 and we are very pleased to see this evolve to a codeshare,” said Chris Avery, Vice-President, Network Planning, Alliances, and Corporate Development. Three in four Vacation. com agents say 2013 bookings on par or better than last year TORONTO — The new year has been a good one for Vacation.com, with strong leisure bookings in January and February, with some 77% of members saying their 2013 bookings are on par or greater than the same time last year, and 88% saying they expect their clients will spend the same or more on travel in 2013 compared to last year. Bookings have been buoyed by the continued popularity of river Online business management The definitive remote business to client (B2C) cruises, a strong sun destination demand and a client base now more accepting of high airfares to Europe. “Consumers are realizing that airfares to Europe are what they are, and they’re not coming down,” said Vacation.com president John Lovell at a Toronto press conference. “So we’re seeing pent-up demand from all those vacationers who waited.” Lovell said he’s also seeing a shift from Europe to North America as a source market for cruises. “Suppliers are looking at the European market differently. They had been looking to Europe for passengers, but now they’re looking back to their core markets, like the U.S. and Canada.” While incidents like the Costa Concordia last year “shut down the first-time cruise market” for a while, the recent Carnival Triumph mishap has had no discernible impact on Vacation.com’s cruise sales. “Post-Triumph, sales have held,” he said. Vacation.com agencies represent about 20 to 25% of the volume generated by the agent channel for cruise bookings, he added. The booking window remains tight, “but we’re seeing better yields and passenger growth, and that’s a very good situation.” Hawaii and other exotic markets continue to shine and Hawaii volumes for Vacation.com agencies are up by the double-digits, he added. The consortium’s membership base now counts more than 5,100 agencies, with an estimated 25,000-plus direct sellers of travel, said Vacation.com president John Lovell at a Toronto press conference. And membership in Canada has pushed beyond the standard ‘10%’ ratio, with 644 Vacation.com agencies in Canada in 2012, and 39 members already added year-to-date in 2013. Back in 2007, Vacation.com decided “it’s not about numbers, it’s about quality,” said Lovell, and the consortium made the cuts. Now, he says, members are actively engaged with the Vacation.com programs, and high-volume agencies meeting certain thresholds are rewarded with membership in the Inner Circle (currently about 700 agencies) and the President’s Circle (over 180 agencies). Canada is outpacing the 10% index here too, with over 50 Canadian agencies currently in the President’s Circle. A new top producer event will be introduced this year, likely in September. Asked how Vacation.com competes with smaller, more upscale boutique organizations, Lovell said “show me a competitor with 300 members and I’ll put our 300 top producers up against that competitor’s any day.” Lovell says Vacation.com is keeping its value proposition robust with tools like e-Engagement Retargeting, that highly effective Internet marketing trick where an ad for a product an agent promotes in an email flyer – say, a Royal Caribbean cruise – pops up on other websites visited by the client. “We’re bringing sophisticated marketing to our members. The ROI is much better than not doing re-targetting, and suppliers pay for it, so it costs our members nothing.” Vacation.com has about 77 retargetted engagement agreements so far for this year, he added. Other new initiatives include InSites, six destination/lifestyle micro sites (including Alaska, Caribbean, European Cruising, European Tours, Luxury and Exotic Destinations) that agencies can link into their own sites. The landing pages are integrated into the retargeted e-Engagement promotions and the In-Sites are now free. Last year’s launches included CruisePro (November 2012, now with 200+ members) and AirPro (June 2012, now with 183 members), offering side-by-side comparisons of cruise and air product. “Programs like CruisePro really give our members the ability to close a sale,” said Lovell, adding that agents can e-mail comparison proposals right from their desktop in a “professional, clean format”. The Worldwide Hotel Program offers some 30,000 hotels, all highly commissionable, says Lovell. Vacation.com’s 2012 annual conference took place on Royal Caribbean Oasis of the Seas and was a huge success, attracting 1,200 attendees, including 150 Canadians. The ship venue was so popular, Vacation.com will probably put a cruise event on its annual conference rotation, said Lovell. The 2013 conference, themed ‘Rise & Shine’, is set for Orlando from June 11 to 15 and highlights include a beach party at host hotel the Walt Disney World Dolphin Resort, and an exclusive night at SeaWorld. Different seminar tracks are available for owners/managers and front-line agents and there will be a couple of tracks for Canadian members as well. Vacation.com’s Canadian Regional Conferences have been so successful, the model has been re-adopted for the U.S. market after a long absence following 9/11. “We’re trying to engage our members the way they want to be engaged,” said Lovell. Air Canada reports record February load factor of 79.8% MONTREAL — Air Canada reported a record system load factor of 79.8% in February versus 76.8% in February 2012, an increase of 3.0 percentage points. System traffic decreased 0.7% on a system-wide capacity decrease of 4.4%. Air Canada reports traffic results on a system-wide basis, including regional airlines from which Air Canada purchases capacity. According to Calin Rovinescu, President and Chief Executive Officer, “the difference in capacity and traffic from the previous year is attributed almost entirely to the additional day of operations reported for the February 2012 leap year, making those year-over-year comparisons less meaningful.” or traffic, increased 7.3% year over year, and capacity, measured in available seat miles (ASMs), grew 3.1% over the same period. The airline flew 1.4 million guests in February, a yearover-year increase of 5.5% or approximately 74,300 additional guests. “Not only did we achieve our eighth consecutive monthly load factor record in February, we also announced WestJet Encore’s first schedule, and celebrated WestJet’s 17th birthday,” said WestJet President and CEO Gregg Saretsky. “We are very pleased with the record February load factor, as our capacity increases continue to be absorbed by the market. I want to thank our over 9,000 WestJetters for their commitment to providing a remarkable experience for our growing number of guests, especially in light of the challenging winter weather conditions.” WestJet reports record February load factor of 86.1%, flies 1.4 million guests in the month, up 5.5% Sandals Resorts to host Virtual WeddingMoons Parties for clients ready to wed CALGARY — WestJet reported February 2013 traffic results with a record load factor of 86.1%. Tunisia offers challenge and opportunity for agents By Chris Ryall TUNIS — Unlike the Caribbean or European destinations, Tunisia is a country which poses some challenges for travel agents and tour operators due to the recent political unrest and what would appeal to Canadians. However, Tunisia presents many opportunities for agents to sell to the high volume Canadian beach loving market and Tunisia offers a wide range of attractions from ancient Roman buildings to modern 5-star resorts. well as special interest groups. NARAT, a Toronto based wholesaler that operates group and FIT tours to a variety of exotic destinations worldwide, recently organized and escorted a 10-day fam for Canadian travel agents. NARAT offers a variety of short (four to eight days) and longstay programs (14 days plus) as well as combining other Northern Africa or Mediterranean destinations with a Tunisian program. Thanushka Nanayakkara, CEO and tour escort on the Tunisia fam, believes Tunisia can appeal to many markets. “The ancient sites and monuments are amongst the best preserved anywhere in the world. Beautiful beaches are uncrowded. The weather is warm and sunny year-round and most Canadi- ans are unaware that Tunisia is in the Mediterranean climate zone.” Sheila Aue, a Mississauga based TPI agent, thinks Tunisia is a more difficult sell but would appeal to her clients “who are tired of the Caribbean and want the all-inclusive option in another part of the world and the fact that it’s a destination not heavily populated by a lot of tourists at this point. Tunisia is a mix of culture, history and luxury resorts which makes it an intriguing destination to sell.” Vickie Samvelyan, sales specialist for Craig Canadian Group Travel, says, “Tunisia would suit everyone – one can watch the sunrise over the Sahara and have a camel ride along the dunes, or visit archeological sites, museums, or Berber caves, enjoy sandy beaches Continued on page 31 ... 12 Travelweek March 14, 2013 TW_March14_2013.indd 12 13-03-11 11:51 AM Photo courtesy of MyEscapades.com SPOTLIGHT AFRICA Scenic Air Safari, Kenya Luxurious Kenya air safaris with MyEscapades offer out-of-sight views by Kathryn Folliott MyEscapades.com welcomes clients on board the luxury Cessna Grand Caravan on two exclusive itineraries that are showcased in its 2013 brochure, now in distribution. “Make your journey as exceptional as the destination — that’s the theme for these safaris in Kenya,” says Firdosh Bulsara, general manager, MyEscapades.com. “A luxury safari experience, flying in comfort on reclining, fully rotating, contoured leather seats, and clients can enjoy the scenic beauty of Kenya not only from the ground up from the skies above. It’s as if you are in first class on an airline and for bush flying in Africa no aircraft can match the Caravan.” Travelling from one park to another is as vital as your safari experience as when you are in the game parks, he adds. “Just as game drives come with a professional driver-guide, so do the flights. Together with professional bush pilots the flights include silver- Spotlight_Africa_Mar14.indd 13 awarded safari guides. Each passenger has a quality headset to communicate with each other or listen to the silver guide’s commentary during the flight.” Guides will offer interesting information about the animals and the scenic highlights of the terrain, he says. Selected accommodations will be at Karen Blixen Camp in the Masai Mara, Satao Elerai in Amboseli, Satao Camp in Tsavo East, and Severin Safari Camp in Tsavo West. Each camp is unique in its own way “making your client’s safari a once in a lifetime experience”. ‘Wings over Kenya’ is a nine-day safari offering a collection of environmentally responsible yet luxury properties and visits Loisaba Conservancy in the north, Lake Naivasha in the Great Rift Valley and Mara North Conservancy in the famed Masai Mara region. The safari is priced from $5,151 per person sharing. During the peak migration season the price increases to $5,958. The 10-day ‘Out of Africa Air Safari’ offers a bird’s eye view of the most spectacular scenery Kenya has to offer. From the snows of Kilimanjaro to the rolling savannah of the famed Masai Mara, and from the vast wilderness of Tsavo to the serene coastline of the Indian Ocean, this safari also includes superior accommodations, all game drives and bush sundowners. The safari begins on the Mara plains, then continues on to Amboseli and Tsavo National Parks and ends on the shores of the Indian Ocean at Mombasa. To call it a bestkept secret is no exaggeration.” Located in southwest Africa, Namibia was a German colony and today is a stable country keen to preserve its natural heritage. Five daily KLM flights out of Canada this summer offer connections around the world Building on the strength of its 201213 winter schedule, Air France KLM is keeping a tight rein on capacity, which will undergo moderate growth in the 2013 summer season (March 31-Oct. 26). Compared to summer 2012, longhaul capacity will be raised by 2.4% and medium-haul capacity will be reduced by 2.1%. For its part, KLM’s capacity will grow by 3.3% on long-haul flights by using its fleet more efficiently by deploying newer aircraft, year-on-year. KLM plans capacity to grow in Europe by 6.5% as the result of using more seats and efficiency rather than the addition of new aircraft. Out of Canada this summer there will be five daily KLM flights: one from Montreal, two from Toronto, one from Calgary and one out of Vancouver. Three new destinations for summer connections are Fukuoka (Japan), Ålesund (Norway) and Manston, Kent (UK). To Africa, this year KLM introduced Lusaka (Zambia), Luanda (Angola) and Harare (Zimbabwe) to its destinations. Harare will be part of a circle flight between Amsterdam and Lusaka, Zambia. The collaboration with Kenya Airways continues to be of great importance to KLM’s position in Africa, and the twice-daily Kenya Airways/ KLM service to Nairobi offers an ever greater number of destinations in Kenya and surrounding countries in East Africa. KLM’s direct flights to Addis Ababa and Khartoum will stop, however, partner Kenya Airways will offer flights there via Nairobi. On March 19 KLM will introduce its new Dutch-designed cabin interior in World Business Class, including an all-new look for the full-flat seats. See klm.com. Sheraton Hotels and its owners invested $120 million to upgrade its 120 club lounges worldwide including flagship properties such as Sheraton Waikiki, Sheraton Denver, Sheraton Centre Toronto, Sheraton Hong Kong, Sheraton Boston, Sheraton Buenos Aires and Sheraton Edinburgh. In addition, Sheraton Club lounges brand-wide are now open seven days a week in response to increased demand from premium corporate and leisure guests. “At a time when our competitors have scaled back their offerings, Sheraton has done the opposite. We invested more than $100 million to significantly enhance Sheraton Club around the world in order to deliver a superior lounge experience for our guests,” said Hoyt Harper, Global Brand Leader, Sheraton Hotels & Resorts. “We wanted to introduce an exclusive offer for our Starwood Preferred Guest members so they can experience first-hand the benefits of Sheraton Club.” Sheraton Club is consistently rated as one of the top two benefits of staying at Sheraton by SPG members, who account for half of all Sheraton hotel bookings. SPG Platinum members have automatic access to Sheraton Club as part of their benefits on all eligible stays and 50% of Sheraton loyalists like the option of paying a premium for the Sheraton Club experience. The Sheraton Club special offer is valid at more than 350 participating Building on “significant progress and momentum” achieved in the last three years, Carlson Rezidor Hotel Group’s Radisson brand will roll out a national pilot project to explore opportunities to innovate many touch points of the hotel guest experience, starting this month. “We believe strongly that efforts made over the last three years to improve our properties, and to deliver on our service promise, will be enhanced by new innovations gathered from the pilot project. The guest experience is back,” said Gordon McKinnon, executive vice president and chief branding officer, Carlson. Through spring and summer 2013 Radisson will launch a national pilot project across four hotels in the U.S. including La Crosse (Wisconsin), Phoenix, Salt Lake City and Seattle. The national pilot project is designed to enhance the guest experience highlighted by establishing a new mobile and online check-in option, launching the Radisson iConcierge, an on-property concierge smartphone application, the launch of an in-hotel charity program, among additional enhancements. Since 2010, 50% of Radisson hotels in the U.S. and Canada have completed Property Improvement Plans (PIPs), up from 25% at the end of 2011. These hotels have demonstrated a positive growth in the Revenue Generation Index (RGI) of +4.8 and an 8.9% increase in RevPAR. More than 70% of properties are on target for PIP completion by the end of 2013. Specific initiatives implemented across all hotels in North America in 2012 led to an improvement in guest experience producing a Guest Satisfaction Index (GSI) increase of .06 year-over-year. 26 Travelweek March 14, 2013 Spotlight_Hotels&Resorts_Mar14.indd 26 13-03-11 11:30 AM SPOTLIGHT TOUR OPERATOR NEWS Photo courtesy of DeNure Tours Peggy’s Cove, Nova Scotia Eight is enough with new group size from escorted specialist DeNure Tours by Kathryn Folliott Agents booking groups with DeNure Tours not only assist their clients in booking a well-organized worry-free holiday, they also earn commission while still getting their group a discounted tour price, says the company. Continued from page 12 and gourmet meals.” She added one area that needs improvement are the airport facilities. Coralie Belman from Let’s Get Out of Here Travel, found Tunisia “a wonderful cultural experience, people are friendly and there are some interesting historical sites including Roman ruins.” Belman added that she could see recommending Jerba in particular as a 4-7 day add-on to another country experience with its beaches and luxury hotels and spas. Many of the major hotel chains have been opening up large-scale hotels and resorts – some of which feature sky-high atriums and extensively large sitting and lobby areas. Rooms are spacious and well-appointed with many of the amenities one would expect in a 5-star property. Unfortunately while the 5-star properties may stand up to scrutiny in their design, activities, amenities and culinary there is one area some properties don’t match up always – service. Tourism is still in its infancy and at some properties the lower level of service is due more to lack of training and experience time. Conversely in some lower-rated properties it exceeded expectations. Tunisia is a destination where you can satisfy the interests of a diverse group of travellers in one package holiday. “There is a mix of experiences available which is very appealing – spend a couple of days relaxing at a beach, visit some traditional and Roman historical sites, cool off in an oasis, get out into the Sahara or go shopping for local goods in the markets,” said Belman. Affordability will go a long way in terms of the success of any tour program to Tunisia. NARAT introduced Tunisia last year with a combination of different tour programs – some are all-inclusive. This winter NARAT has introduced a two-week all-inclusive package starting at only $1,290 per person plus taxes (airfare excluded). NARAT offers on its long-stay program a three-day Paris extension as that is the easiest way to fly to Tunisia. Air France offers convenient daily service from Canada to Tunisia via Paris. Tunisia should be an easy sell for agents NARAT’s Nanayakkara believes compared to other destinations. “Tunisia is an unbeatable value destination at present with a lot of savings and can be easily combined with France or Italy.” For more information on NARAT’s Tunisia tours, visit narat.org. March 14, 2013 Travelweek 35 TW_March14_2013.indd 35 13-03-11 11:51 AM Feature This Collette Vacations offers authentic cultural experiences with ‘The Plains of Africa’ safari Kenya has long been renowned for its wildlife, vast landscapes and stunning national parks. But Collette Vacations is inviting travellers to go beyond the landmarks and experience new wonders with its 14-day ‘The Plains of Africa’ safari adventure. Part of Collette’s ‘Explorations’ series that caters to small groups (12-28 passengers), this tour allows guests to venture into the African bush for personal cultural experiences. From nature walks and unforgettable meals to traditional bush dinners and a Masai dance performance, the experiences found on this program will certainly leave a lifelong impression. “Collette Vacations has seen nearly 50% growth year over year with 2013 bookings for ‘The Plains of Africa’ tour due to the amazing pricing that meets the strong demand for Kenya, its natural beauty, amazing accommodations, nine game drives and great interaction with the local culture and environment,” said Bethany Manchester, Product Manager of Collette Vacations-Canada, Iceland and Africa. Accommodations are provided by the world famous Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club, once the private retreat of actor William Holden. Here, guests will enjoy a full day of leisure before spending two nights at the base of massive Mount Kilimanjaro inside Amboseli National Park. There are ample opportunities to spot wildlife during the tour, with nine game drives at the Samburu Reserve, Masai Mara Game Reserve, Amboseli National Park, Serengeti National Park, Lake Manyara National Park and Lake Nakuru. Guests will hopefully get the chance to spot the Big 5 (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino), not to mention thousands of flamingos feeding along the shores of Lake Nakuru. Other highlights include an afternoon nature walk in the Great Rift Valley for close viewing of several bird species and indigenous plants. There’s also the chance to feed giraffes at the Rothschild Giraffe Sanctuary, learn about the culture and traditions of the Samburu ethnic group, visit the farmhouse of Karen Blixen, author of the book ‘Out of Africa’, and visit students at the Tenderfeet Education Center, which is supported by the Collette Foundation. Clients wishing to personalize their trip can do so by adding a pre- or post-night stay in Nairobi, a four-night, post-tour extension to Tanzania, or a hot air balloon ride over the Masai Mara. They can also travel to the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary in Nanyuki, which has rescued a total of 43 chimps from traumatic situations. After learning how these animals are carefully nursed back to health, guests will then embark on a game drive in the sanctuary before returning to Mt. Kenya. The ‘Plains of Africa’ tour has a variety of departure dates from now through April 2013, with a starting price of $4,534 land only, per person.
