One prevalent story is about Wayne, a spirit who has been seen — and photographed — standing in a doorway outside Room 25. He appears to be a large man in a old military uniform. The Hulbert House once was a gathering spot for Civil War soldiers going off to war. Other spirits that have been studied, recorded and photographed by paranormal groups through the years include little Lucy, a child who often is heard running through the hotel. Up to recent times, residents and guests have stayed in second-floor rooms. Rooms on the third floor no longer are used for that purpose. There have been no residents on that floor of the Hulbert House since the early 1970s. Those halls and rooms still retain furniture, decor and belongings from days past. Whether your intent is to dig into some outdoor activities or enjoy a peaceful weekend cozied up in a warm cabin, Oneida County will exceed your expectations. Our winters are among the finest in America. Boonville consistently ranks in the nation’s snowiest places, sometimes topping the list. With more than 500 miles (804km) of trails, it’s the perfect destination for snowmobiling and snowshoeing. The fact that twelve Snowmobile Clubs exist throughout the county speaks for the quality of the experience. A cross-country skier’s paradise, the BREIA Trails are more than 31 miles (50km) in length, making them one of the largest groomed cross country ski systems in the East. If downhill is more your style, visitors of all ages can ski – or tube – down the slopes at Woods Valley or Val Bialas Sports Center. At the Utica Aud, cheer on the Utica Comets pro hockey team or the Utica College Hockey team. There are also many arenas available for those who wish to play hockey or skate. Interested in curling? Take a lesson, plan an event, or just watch at the Utica Curling Club. Oneida County is the place to make your winter fantasies come true. A variety of cabins, houses, bed and breakfasts, hotels, motels, and campsites are available throughout the county, so you’re sure to find something that meets your needs and desires. You may never in your life see winter scenery quite as brilliant as the Adirondack greenery frosted winter white. So plan a getaway to Oneida County and seize the season. Weddings Oneida County offers an unforgettable array of possibilities from large 48 | 2016 Oneida County Travel Guide fairy tale receptions in the ballrooms at Vernon Downs, to swanky affairs at the Shenandoah Clubhouse and The Beeches. TheGetawayRegion.com | 61 Dear Traveler, On behalf of the Mohawk Valley Association of Realtors, I’d like to personally thank you for visiting our great area. We sincerely hope that your time here in Oneida County was everything you expected, and much more. The Mohawk Valley is the cradle of many things, but for those of us who live, work and play here, it’s our home. And like all good neighbors, we’d like to share our home with you. If your visit here left you wanting a more permanent Mohawk Valley experience, one where your daily life is rarely routine, we’re here to help. The Oneida County region delivers four full seasons of outdoor living, theater and entertainment, night life and activities. We are close to everything our great state has to offer, and many of New York State’s greatest attractions are either in our backyard, or a day trip away. There’s camping, fishing and boating in the summer. When the snow flies, we have hundreds of miles of snowmobile trails to explore, as well as access to the best skiing in the Northeast. In the spring and fall, you’ll enjoy some of the most magnificent foliage in the nation. Are you a foodie? Our dining is second to none, with more family-owned specialty restaurants than franchised eateries. Commuting in the area is a snap – no matter where you are, you’re close to where you need to be. Our area is welcoming to people from around the world, or around the corner. No matter where you’re from, you’ll feel like you’re a native in no time. Oneida County offers some of the most affordable real estate in the northeast, and housing options range from modest starter homes to grand Adirondack lodges, with every possible option in between. We have homes dating back to pre-Revolutionary War times, and we have new construction – whatever your style, we can make it happen. If you loved your visit, and you’d like to make Oneida County your permanent place of residence, call a Realtor. Our team of professionals across the Mohawk Valley Association of Realtors will welcome you home.
