Church's Final Gifts
Serve Others for Years to Come
LAKE CHARLES – After 57 years of serving the people of Oak Park and the Lake Charles community,
Oak Park United Methodist Church held its final worship service May 31. However, the legacy
of Oak Park UMC will continue to serve the people of Calcasieu Parish for many years to come.
At the Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church held in Kenner June 7-10,
Oak Park UMC Pastor Shawn Hornsby presented Terrel DeVille, CEO and President of the
United Methodist Children’s Home with a check representing an endowment created for
the new home, which is currently being constructed in Sulphur.
The $70,000 endowment established with the United Methodist Foundation of LA will
provide an annual gift through the interest earned to the Methodist Children’s Home for
Southwest Louisiana. The congregation of Oak Park UMC decided to create the endowment
as they wrestled with the many decisions leading to the closing of their church.
Oak Park UMC, located at 1800 Orchid St. in the heart of the Oak Park neighborhood of Lake Charles, first opened to the public in March
of 1952 under the leadership of the Rev. Theodore Weber.
After an extended period of membership decline, the congregation decided to disband but refused to go quietly into history. Members of
the church’s administrative council made the decision to begin the closing process last August. The conversation around that decision
led to the discussion of creating an endowment so that the church’s legacy might continue. The new children’s home to be constructed
in Sulphur instantly came to mind and the congregation eagerly embraced the idea.
Acquiring, Supporting and Securing a Permanent Site for
Greater New Orleans Home
The children, staff, and board of LUMCFS, Inc., and the LA Annual Conference are deeply
indebted and very grateful for the support pledged to our organization by the members of
the Central Pennsylvania Conference and the ministry of the United Methodist Home for
Children in Mechanicsburg, PA. This ministry, under the excellent leadership of Dr. David
Reed and staff, has graciously been giving support to help us recover from 4 devastating
hurricanes during the last 3½ years.
In February of 2008, we relocated the Children’s Home from its site in New Orleans to a
temporary facility in Mandeville, which we are currently leasing from the state of Louisiana.
This relocation has bought us some time, however within the next few years we must locate a
site and construct a permanent Home for the children being cared for. Terrel J. DeVille, President
and CEO of LUMCFS, says “When Dr. Reed called to inform me that the Pennsylvania Conference
had elected to conduct a financial campaign to make major improvements on the campus of
the Children’s Home located in Mechanicsburg, and that they would designate a portion of the
Campaign to assist us with the relocation of the New Orleans facility, I have to admit it almost
overwhelmed me.” Mr. DeVille complimented Dr. Reed with the following quote: “What a servant
leadership the Central Pennsylvania Conference has. What a commitment to ministry your
membership is demonstrating. We of the LA Annual Conference and the LA Methodist Children’s
Home covet our relationship with you and with our sister agency in children, youth and
family ministry. Anything we can do to make your effort successful, we are here to serve.
May God’s blessings be with all his children throughout the world.”

Message
Good News, Concerns
and Great News!
Upon returning from Annual Conference I have decided to not only
update you on my report to the Annual Conference, but to also include
information that I did not have time to elaborate on due to the time
constraints placed on presentations due to the scope of the agenda
that the Conference had to deal with. The Conference devoted half a
day to mission work opportunities around the Greater New Orleans
Area helping with the continuing recovery effort following Hurricane
Katrina. Yes, there is still a great deal of work to be done and that
was one of the primary reasons that Annual Conference was held in
Kenner, enabling the entire Conference Leadership to participate. We
also devoted the better part of a day to dealing with the Constitutional
Amendments proposed by the 2008 General Conference.
Of course we submit an annual report that summarizes our service
statistics and financial status from the previous operational year.
The report is printed in the Pre-Conference Reports and upon
Conference approval becomes part of the official Annual Journal.
This year we updated our Relationship Statement between the
Louisiana United Methodist Children and Family Services and the
Annual Conference, reflecting the updated organization, which
includes the Campus of the Methodist Home for Children of Greater
New Orleans and the Christmas Offering necessary to continue the
support of that program. Our relationship to the Annual Conference
is critical to our ability in remaining a Faith Based Institution.

Upon closing Oak Park UMC, this congregation along with the
leadership of Rev. Shawn T. Hornsby and Rev. Steve Spurlock, Lake
Charles District Superintendent; established the “Oak Park Memorial
Endowment Fund” at the Louisiana United Methodist Foundation
in the amount of $70,000. The interest income will support the
ministry of care to be offered at the Methodist Children's Home of
Southwest Louisiana once it begins operations. This is an open fund
that one can add to. What a great witness! Oak Park Church will
continue in ministry even after it ceases being an active church.
The second Great Blessing to be shared is with the Methodist Home for
Children of Greater New Orleans. The Central Pennsylvania Conference
has pledged a tithe (10%) of the receipts from the Capital Campaign
it is conducting. This Campaign is for the purpose of rebuilding their
Children's Home Campus which is located in Mechanicsburg, Penn.
The 10% pledged to us is for the purpose of locating and constructing
a permanent site for our Campus in the Greater New Orleans Area. We
are currently in rented space at South East LA Hospital. This is indeed
a tremendous witness by the Central Pennsylvania Conference and is
being lead by Bishop Jane A. Middleton to that Annual Conference's
wish to help with the recovery effort still being addressed because
of the effects of Hurricane Katrina. Our connectional system, for all
the concerns we hear about it, is indeed a wonderful Blessing. As Rev.
Dr. David L. Reed, Executive Director and his staff from the United
Methodist Home for Children provide new and safer facilities for the
Children of Central Pennsylvania we will be assisted in providing a
Home at a safe site for some of Louisiana's Children.
We are indeed blessed by all who partner with us during these uncertain
times making it possible for us to share this positive report when so
much appears negative. One thing is certain: together we will care for
each individual that asks for our help by extending God's Love to them
as we follow the teachings of Jesus Christ in carrying out our Ministry.
I very briefly reported that all three Campuses, the Methodist
Children's Home in Ruston, The Home for Children in Mandeville,
and the OWL Campus near Dubach are all at operational capacity
and doing well. Our four Regional Family Plus Offices located in
Shreveport, Monroe, Pineville and Baton Rouge continue to grow in
services. I did not get the chance to announce that we just this month
added a fifth Regional Office in Natchitoches, LA with the leadership
of Rev. Don Avery and the membership of First UMC Natchitoches.
They have made this possible with a 3 year pledge of support from
an anonymous donor and the use of office space at the Church.
One final thought. As our Conference challenged us to “Re-Think
Church”, I shared with the Conference Members and I invite you to
think of your Children and Family Ministries, when you “Think
Church”. Everything we do on a daily basis is bringing Church to
the least in our world. God Bless All We Do.
A concern that I shared with the Conference was disturbing
comments which have been made stating that, “with the New
Orleans Home now being part of Ruston Home that they no longer
needed to direct their gifts there.” Nothing could be further from the
truth. First there is no separation of the Ruston Home and the Greater
New Orleans Home. There is one “Home” with two locations. If you
stop the support of one location then you weaken both locations. It is
possible to damage both if this happens and there could be no worse
time for this to occur. With economic times as they are, now is when
we are even more overwhelmed with requests for help than ever.
We cannot afford to lose any programs.

I did inform the Conference that we are proceeding with plans to
start construction on the site between Sulphur and DeQuincy, LA.
The campus, to be known as the Methodist Children's Home of
Southwest Louisiana should be ready to receive Children into care
no later than early 2011. I am happy to report that bids have been
received and we are negotiating a contract for construction.

In His Service
Naming Opportunities for Vo-Tech and Southwest Louisiana Buildings
There is a great need in Southwest Louisiana for our services. Annually we receive
over 1,000 referrals. On average we are able to care for 25% of those seeking our help.
Historically we have children from Southwest LA placed on our campus in Ruston and
recently in our Home in Mandeville. With a new campus, we will not only increase
our ability to respond to requests for help, but will be able to care for children in
Southwest Louisiana. You can help by pledging an amount over a period of 1-5 years,
or making a one-time gift to help construct and/or furnish this Home. This is a great
opportunity to honor or memorialize a loved one.
Also, we are progressing with plans to construct and build a permanent structure
on the Ruston Campus for Vo-Tech training by conducting a “capital need” effort to
raise the approximately $1.5 million necessary for the construction and furnishing of
the building. Naming opportunities for the building and various parts of the building
are available.

Patriotic Program
Once again our Recreation department and various
MCH staff did an excellent job of celebrating our
country’s birthday with our youth, guests and fellow
staffers. Ms. Sarah Schwab played the piano as Brother
Mickey Stringfield, chaplain for our home, blessed us
by singing the Battle Hymn of the Republic.
Mr. DeVille shared with attendees that the flag on
display had actually flown in front of the Home’s
administration building back in 1968. The flag was
donated that year by an alumni Homecoming group
at the height of the Vietnam war. The flag flew in front of the administration
building until Howard School was built and then it was moved to the school. The flag has since
been in storage in Mr. DeVille’s office until this most recent patriotic program provided the perfect
opportunity to bring it out once again.

country. There is a book regaling
his efforts titled “Operation
Redwing”. Murphy was awarded
the Congressional Medal of Honor. His story is just one of many that
describe the efforts being made by our soldiers to protect our freedoms
and our privilege of being an American citizen. Sims said that he joined
the National Guard 8 years ago because he needed direction in his life.
The program encouraged youth to join in the festivities by singing
along to such songs as “This Land is Your Land”, “Yankee Doodle”, and
“My Country Tis of Thee”.

Special Thanks
On behalf of the Louisiana United Methodist Children’s Home
(LMCH), I want to thank Governor Jindal for the monies
awarded to the Drug Awareness and Violence Prevention
Program at Howard School. Howard School is located on
LMCH campus where we provide services to youth from
all over the state of Louisiana. With the awarded monies we
facilitate positive behavior by educating our youth about drugs
and violence, show them how to make positive choices by
teaching social skills, coping skills for anger management and
life skills. We also teach classes to staff about substance abuse
and gang awareness in an effort to increase their competence
about the dangers that our youth face. Our goal with this
funding is to change negative risk taking behaviors in youth
so that they can return to society and be productive citizens.

Will Travel!
First United Methodist Church
Shelbyville, TN
One such invitation came from Shelbyville, Tennessee, and Dr. and
Mrs. Bob Flournoy traveled to share the message of the Louisiana
Methodist Children’s Home to the congregation of the First United
Methodist Church in Shelbyville.
Why Shelbyville?
Short answer: The church family of Shelbyville’s First United
Methodist Church has a caring spirit and desire to help children
affected by Hurricane Katrina.
Long answer: After seeing the devastation in New Orleans from
Hurricane Katrina, the people of Shelbyville’s First United Methodist
Church began looking for a way to help. Kay Bartlett, chairman of
the Outreach Committee of the church, knew that fellow church
member Virginia Stewart was formerly from New Orleans and
would have some ideas on the best way for the church to help. Being

Ms. Stewart knew just where her church’s help should be directed.
Contact was made to the New Orleans home and information
about the damage the home received was shocking to Ms. Stewart.
She was told the home’s property was unlivable and the children
and staff had been relocated to the Louisiana Methodist Children’s
Home in Ruston. With this news, Ms. Stewart and Mrs. Bartlett
mobilized their congregation to send much needed aid to LMCH
for the care of the New Orleans youth and staff.
Now, three and a half years later, the church in Shelbyville
continue to support LMCH and invited a representative from
the Home to bring a message to the entire congregation. Happily,
Dr. Flournoy was chosen to be the ambassador and traveled to
Shelbyville in mid-May to meet Mrs. Bartlett, Ms. Stewart,
Rev. Lloyd Doyle and the entire church family.
Dr. and Mrs. Flournoy were treated with wonderful Tennessee
hospitality by staying in the home of Ms. Stewart and her husband,
Gene Schaffer. Shelbyville is the Walking Horse Capital of the World
and Virginia and Gene have a working horse farm. Their home
is beautifully set on the farm. Upon arrival, Virginia and Gene
hosted a casual dinner party attended by Kay and Bart Bartlett,
Clare and Lloyd Doyle, Elizabeth and Allen Doyle (children of Rev.
and Mrs. Doyle) and the Flournoys. It was a delightful evening and
conversation was mixed with stories and information about LMCH.
The next morning held even more hospitality as the Flournoys were
greeted by the church family at the morning worship service. The
Children’s Choir gave a charming anthem complete with animation
and the Adult Choir gave a heart-filled rendition of “There Are No
Orphans”. Rev. Doyle expressed his thankfulness for Dr. Flournoy
coming all the way to Shelbyville to share the message of LMCH.
Mrs. Bartlett introduced Dr. Flournoy to the congregation prior to his
message. He thanked the church for their generosity for these past
3 and a half years and told many facts and much new information
about LMCH’s mission. At the end of the service, Rev. Doyle asked for
a special offering to be taken for LMCH. Church members greeted and
thanked Dr. Flournoy for his message and promised continued aid
for the Home. Fact Sheets, Pathways, informational DVDs and other
information was distributed to the congregation.
LMCH is very thankful for churches such as Shelbyville, Tennessee
who so willingly give of themselves to help the children in our care.

Nashville, TN
Aldersgate United Methodist Church of Nashville, TN, also extended
an invitation to LMCH President /CEO Terrel J. DeVille. Aldersgate is
the home church of Mr. DeVille’s son Auston “Stoney” DeVille, his
wife Laura and their newborn daughter Celia.

Mr. DeVille was happy to share with the congregation of Aldersgate
what we do in terms of services for troubled youth. He introduced
them to the greater community of Methodist work involving children
and family services. He also spoke about the General Conference’s
new campaign Rethink Church. What is church? Church is not just a
building, and not just people coming together one day a week, but it’s
about how they live out in their community. The campaign which
has a website 10thousanddoors.org challenges its members with the
question “What if church wasn’t just a building, but thousands of
doors?” People can make a difference in the world and in their own
backyards. Mr. DeVille challenged the congregation to “Think of your
children and family services 7 days a week, 365 days a year.”

look for an End of the Year statement of
giving for your tax records.
Important Donor Information
regarding IRS requirements:
Record needed for all cash gifts.
No matter how small of an amount you donate
to us in cash, you must keep a canceled check,
bank record, or a receipt with our organization’s
name and the amount on it.
Otherwise there will be no deduction allowed by the
IRS. At the end of the year we will send a letter listing
all gifts made that calendar year. You will receive this
letter by the end of January for the prior year’s gifts.

Dying Easter Eggs
Easter Egg Hunt
For many years, our Recreation Department has planned and
coordinated an Easter Egg hunt on the grounds of our Ruston
campus for all residents to participate in. This year an Easter
Egg hunt was indeed held for the youth, but for the first time,
it was held at our OWL Center. Our youth love going out to the
OWL, so you can imagine how thrilled they were to get to hunt
Easter Eggs out there this year! Over 1,000 eggs were hidden
by LMCH staff. 500 of the eggs were eggs that the youth had
colored and decorated during Recreation activities, 400 of them
were stuffed by LMCH staff, and the other 100 were stuffed by
ladies with the VFW Auxiliary group. As always, there were
“prize eggs” to be found. After the youth hunted eggs and the
prizes were given, a dinner of grilled hamburgers and sausage
was served. Thanks to the OWL staff and everyone who made
this new adventure happen for our youth!!

Contest
Our youth

opportunity to
participate in a
poster contest.
Posters were
presented to
the Ruston
Mr. DeVille, Sharon Chandler,
Addictive
and Sandy Adams
Disorders Clinic (RADC). Prizes
were awarded for 1st, 2nd, and
3rd place, with an Honorable Mention also given. Each youth
that entered a poster in the contest was given a certificate of
participation. Winners were given a tote bag filled with goodies
and a free hair cut. They will also have their artwork displayed
at the RADC office. A special thank-you to DeNeise Barlow and
Sandy Adams for heading up the contest for our youth. The contest
provided a way for some very talented
youth to get to express themselves
through art. Thank you also to RADC
for doing the contest with us.

LMCH Annual Golf Tournament
Homecoming
LMCH had its homecoming weekend the 4th Sunday in April. Many
alumni came together to share stories of their time at the home. They
gathered to look at photo albums, some attended chapel services on
campus, and then lunch was provided. There were several new faces
this year. We are thankful for each and every person who attended,
and invite any other alumni to plan to join us next year!

Improving Your Investment Returns
Most of us with savings are trying to get the greatest return on
that money, whether we obtain a bank Certificate of Deposit (CD),
purchase municipal bonds or invest in stocks. Currently the returns
for a CD and the stock market are very poor in most instances.
What if you could receive a minimum return of 5% on your
money and maximum return of 9.5% for life for investing $5,000
minimum? Sound too good to be true? You can accomplish this
by creating a Charitable Gift Annuity (CGA). A Charitable Gift
Annuity is designating an amount of cash to go to a charity of
your choosing at your death while you receive a percentage of
that cash the years you live. It is a lifetime contract with fixed
payments. Unlike a CD, when you fund a CGA, you know what
your payment rate is this year, the next and for as long as you
live. And unlike CDs, CGAs offer you other benefits such as an
income tax deduction the year for part of your funding amount.
Several of our donors have used CGAs to their advantage. One
that comes to mind was Dr. Emile Bernard of New Orleans. He
was a lifelong member of Napoleon Avenue Methodist Church
LMCH of Ruston’s Annual Golf Tournament was held at the
Ruston Country Club on Friday, June 5th, with lots of attendees
and LMCH staffers on hand. Fifteen teams gathered to tee off
at 1:30pm. Thanks to all teams and sponsors. Once again we
had great community response! We appreciate all who came
out and played. Proceeds from the Golf Tournament will be
used to offset
the costs of our
youth’s Summer
Activities,
including their
annual Summer

Methodist Foundation that paid him 9.7% during his life and
now helps to support the Louisiana Methodist Children Home.
Yes, the figure is right—9.7% return to Dr. Bernard. The older you
are when you take out a gift annuity, the higher the return. You
see many people do not know these financial vehicles exist to get
a great return on their income. To me, this is a win-win situation.
Why? Because you receive income for life. It is fixed. Your lifetime
payment amount is unaffected by economic downturns. It is a
payment you can depend upon. The table below shows examples
of age and the percentage return on a CGA.

NOMADS
Nomads On a Mission Active in Devine Service
Nomads are a unique bunch of people with at least one thing in common: the desire to help others. They
are members of a United Methodist organization comprised of volunteers from all different parts of the
United States. The members travel all over the U.S. doing service work. We were recently visited by a
group of NOMADS, and one member wrote a poem about the work they did during their stay with us:
Ode to the NOMADS at OWL – 2009
Ken, Wayne, Dave, Dave and Steve
Ella, Edie, Joyce, Carol and Leanne
Met in mid March on a warm spring eve
To become the new NOMADS at OWL.
The toiling was guided by Reagan and Jay
And ranged from inside to outside
Lasting most of each day
The work of the NOMADS at OWL.
There was toil and painting on sheds galore
The one for the bikes and those at the ponds
Just some of the work, for there would be more
For the eager NOMADS at OWL.
The second or the other
That was ok with the NOMADS at OWL.
There was a big party at the spacious center on Saturday night
We helped with the set up and table cloth dilemma the power washed
the porch.
But pollen doesn’t wash well, it settles while circling in flight
Oh well, they tried, those NOMADS at OWL.
At the OWL they grow ferns then make salsa in a big cooking vat
Making all kinds of funds for the programs for kids
And Jay is the guy who oversees all that
With a little help once a year from the NOMADS at OWL.
There was toting and moving of wood, metal and all kinds of gear
A bridge was built and a trailer repaired
Then one rainy night with someone hunting for deer
Shots were heard by most NOMADS at OWL.
We labeled jars, cut onions and bottled salsa in an all morning job
under Jay’s watchful eye
“Is your hairnet on and the jar ready to spout?” “Yes, sir” we would shout!
Some of that salsa’s so hot it could make most Yankees cry
So wipe off the sweat, test it again, you NOMADS at OWL.
All the horses were accounted for the very next day
So work on the gates, Reagan said, could not delay
To keep in the critters so they wouldn’t stray
Such was the labor of the NOMADS at OWL.
It’s no simple thing to get a fern in a bag
Takes several NOMADS to keep the fronds
From any bending or sag
But it’s not too much for the NOMADS at OWL.
“More work for the animals” Reagan would say
Fans to be hung and electric wires to be strung
Our strong hardy men worked at that for a few days
Such was the barn work for the NOMADS at OWL.

Hands and backs were sore for many in the bunch

A nnual Fund
What is the Circle of Friends?
The Circle of Friends was created in 2004 by the
Louisiana Methodist Children’s Home Board of
Directors as an Annual Fund. Its purpose is to allow
individuals and businesses to financially partner
with the Home in the holistic treatment of abused
and neglected youth. In addition, the Annual Fund
gives the Home a steady financial resource.
Who can join the Circle of Friends?
Individuals, businesses, Sunday School classes,
small groups, United Methodist Men and Women’s
groups, civic organizations, churches, schools, and
foundations are just some of the members of this
generous group of donors.
When do I join?
Anytime, but the month of January is the best time
to join and renew membership. Generally speaking,
financial gifts to the Home decrease at the first of the
year, but our expenses remain the same. By receiving
memberships at the beginning of the year, the Home
has a more constant income. Members may join at
a certain level, but pay monthly throughout the year.
What are the benefits of the Circle?
The youth in our care benefit from the food,
clothing, school supplies, medicine, recreation, and
educational instruction the funds supply. Donors
benefit because they become part of a trusted agency
that gives youth the chance for a better life.

Message
Greetings!
We ended the month of March with the
youth enjoying a fabulous social party sponsored by United
Methodist Women of St. Matthews United Methodist Church
in Metairie, LA. Our youth enjoyed a day filled with laughs,
prayer, companionship, and food. Our sincere thanks to the
members of the UMW. On March 28, the Moisant Kiwanis Club
sponsored our boys for the annual Fishing Rodeo that took place
in City Park. Thanks to the Kiwanis Club, our boys enjoyed a
day of sun, food, and fishing. On March 29, I had the privilege
of speaking at St. Timothy's United Methodist Church. I extend
my deep appreciation to Rev. James Mitchell for granting me
the opportunity to speak to the congregation about our home's
vision, goals, and mission.
April was a busy month. Our youth, with the help of Mary Ellen
and Richard Kilgrove, gave our Butterfly Garden a face lift. New
plants, flowers, and borders have given our garden a new look.
Mr. and Mrs. Kilgrove are members of St. Timothy's UMC. Easter
was a wonderful time for our youth; one filled with reflection and
prayer. Thank you to Victory Fellowship Church and Chris Jolisaint
for their continued dedication to teaching our youth the word of
the Lord through weekly bible studies. On April 9, Amite High
School blessed us with an array of Easter baskets for our youth. St.
Timothy's UMC also donated several Easter baskets. The youth were
overwhelmed when they received their baskets on Easter morning.
Our youth,ages of 15-17, began Independent Living Classes on
April 20th. Classes are held in our lounge every Monday evening
and are provided by Southeastern University. On April 17th, our
youth had an opportunity to cheer on the New Orleans Zephyrs
Baseball team at a home game. Thanks to Entergy Louisiana, Inc.
for the tickets! What a magical night, the youth enjoyed a great
game and of course, great food. April was also filled with a concert
at the Trailhead in Mandeville, LA. and a Tulane Baseball game on
April 25th. Tickets and concession were secured by Kathy Garrett,
a member of the mission club of St. Timothy's UMC. Thank you
to her and Tulane University for their support and donation. We
ended the month of April with the beginning of our golf meetings
in preparation for our 30th annual golf tournament which will
be held on October 5th at Beau Chêne Country Club.
May filled the youth with energy; school was almost out! On
May 1st, one of our male youth was awarded Student of the
Month for his school. He enjoyed a beautiful breakfast and
award ceremony. He was so proud of himself and so were we! On
May 2nd, the youth enjoyed a May Day party sponsored by 1st
United Methodist in Baton Rouge. The youth enjoyed two hours
of activities, cupcakes, and pizza. May also brought bowling!!
The youth participated in the Charlie's Saints Marching Club's
19th Annual Benefit Bowling Tournament on May 17th. We were
one of the beneficiaries from the proceeds of this event. Charlie's
Saints Marching Club is the same organization that provides us
with season tickets to the Saints game for the youth. Go Saints!!
We also enjoyed a day of sun, fun, and swimming thanks to St.
Timothy's Mission Club. Especially with our hot summers, we are
hopeful that many more swimming days are in our future.
May 25th marked the last day of school and the official start
of our summer. Keeping 18 youth busy is a challenge, but not
impossible. The youth have enjoyed trips to the beach located
in Fontainebleau State Park, which is directly across the street
from us. Our youth have had the opportunity to complete their
summer clothes shopping and our nurse has had the opportunity
to update immunizations (guess which one the youth enjoyed?!).
Days filled with trips to the library, bike riding, getting wet on
the slip and slide, and enjoying sno-balls have become routine.
Some of our youth have been blessed with the opportunity to go
on extended passes with relatives. Weekends are filled with trips
to the park, movie theaters, skating arena, and the occasional
water balloon fight. On June 27, our youth enjoyed an Ice Cream
Social sponsored by the UMW of 1st United Methodist Church of
Baton Rouge. They had fun making their own ice cream floats,
banana splits, and decorating ice cream in so many original
ways. July 4th was celebrated with fireworks, music, and food.
Our youth and staff attended the “Old Fashioned Family Fourth”
at the Rogue Falaya Park in Covington, LA. We also had a pizza
party and enjoyed various water games. Thank you to 1st United
Methodist of Baton Rouge for sponsoring the pizza party. We will
end July with a trip to the Gulf Island Water Park in Gulfport,
MS. and a hot dog/hamburger lunch sponsored by 1st United
Methodist Church in Baton Rouge.
Once again, I would like to extend our sincere thanks to all
sponsors for their generosity. It is always amazing to see how
generous and giving people can be. We are able to go above and
beyond for our youth with the help of donors. God Bless!

Fishing Rodeo
Thank you to the Moisant Kiwanis Club for inviting our youth
to a Fishing Rodeo! The Rodeo was held at City Park in New
Orleans. Our youth had a wonderful time fishing and enjoying lots
of good food and fun!
The Wesleyan Youth Choir
The Wesleyan Youth Choir from the Athens First UMC of
Athens, GA performed Monday, June 8 at the Home for
our youth and staff. The choir, under the direction of Janis
Maxwell put on a great concert, after which everyone
participated in a fun game of softball.
Meet and Greet
St. Matthews UMW from Metairie had a meet and greet social for
the youth at the Mandeville location of MCH. They were treated to
lots of great food and drinks. The UMW also provided each child
with a gift bag of personal items.

St. Timothy’s UMC Sarah Circle delivered Easter baskets for
our youth. The baskets were filled with candy, cookies and
gifts for the youth. Thank you Sarah Circle members for
helping to make Easter a fun time for our youth.
Summer Revival
Victory Fellowship of Covington and Metairie held a Summer
revival afternoon for the youth and staff. They cooked hotdogs
and hamburgers for us and provided chips and soft drinks as well
as refreshing water. The youth group performed for all as well as
a group of our youth from the Bible study group held every other
Tuesday. After a fun filled afternoon of good food, games and skits
the youth and staff enjoyed a water balloon toss to cool down.

First UMC of Baton Rouge held an
ice cream social for our youth. The
group brought everything to make
sundaes, banana splits, ice cream
floats, and more. They had a great
time creating their masterpieces
and then eating them!

A young group of kids called Project 2:8
visited our Home on June 16th. They sang
and danced to many Broadway tunes.
The youth and staff really enjoyed their
performance and we thank them for coming!

30th Annual Methodist Home Golf Classic
This annual golf tournament will be held Monday,
October 5, 2009 at the Beau Chêne Country Club in
Mandeville, LA. The Tournmament is in the SCRAMBLE
format. The fee for participation will cover greens and
cart fees, food and beverages and a generous donation
to help the Methodist Home for Children of Greater
New Orleans. For more information contact the Home

MCH Growth and Programs
Remain Strong
In spite of a troubling economy, we are
expanding our services throughout the
state. How many agencies are able to say
that these days? A connectional ministry
is one of the keys to our success.
Our growth has been made possible by strong participation
from communities throughout the state. This support is essential
in order to sustain the programs we have developed. One way
that this is done is through our Local Church Representative
(LCR) program. We are in the process of involving each United
Methodist Church throughout the state, inviting them to share
their gifts and talents.
The LCR serves as a liaison between his or her church and
LMCH, to help strengthen the relationship between the two.
We rely on each LCR to help promote our programs. They
receive information from the Home on a regular basis, and help
to insure that their congregation is kept informed of all that is
going on in our programs. LCR’s may also be able to introduce
others to mission work opportunities at one of our campuses, or
help coordinate a fund-raiser event to benefit our children—i.e. a
car wash, bake sale, or video night. We welcome your creativity!
We currently have approximately 150 LCRs and need church
pastors to appoint one if the church does not already have one.
There continues to be much enthusiasm throughout the state, as
we are in the process of building our new facility to help youth
and families in southwest Louisiana. This is a huge project, and
we will need your continued prayers and monetary support to
bring this to fruition.
Our programs in southeast Louisiana continue to thrive too,
and our children are enriched by your creativity. Thanks to the
combined efforts of Pearl Squires and her staff at Bright Hopes
Quilting in Mandeville, and the Sharper Needles group which meets
at her store, each child at our Mandeville location has received a
beautiful, hand-made quilt. The children love having their own
quilt, which they take with them when they leave our Home.
Also in Mandeville, Dick Kilgore and friends of St. Timothy on
the Northshore, UMC have been sharing their green thumbs
and gardening expertise with our youth. The kids get to plant
whatever they would like (including okra, jalapeño peppers, and
even a white English rose!) With Mr. Kilgore’s guidance, they are
learning to share their bounty with others. This fall they will
be planting vegetables as part of the “Plant a Row, Share a Row”
program, benefiting those involved in a local food bank program.
Bob Squires and his committee of volunteers are working hard to
repeat the success of the annual golf tournament. The 30th Annual
Methodist Home Golf Classic will be at the Beau Chêne Country
Club, October 5th. All proceeds benefit the Methodist Home for
Children of Greater New Orleans. Please call me if you may be able
to help as a Sponsor, or to participate in the tournament. Thanks!
