Dear Friends,
Welcome to the 6th London Russian Film Festival!
As usual, the Festival brings to London some of the best Russian
films of the year. Many of them have already won numerous awards
at prestigious national and international film festivals. The London
Russian Film Festival is a unique chance to see them all together
during the 10 days of the festival, and to immerse yourself in the rich
diversity of Russia’s cinematic culture.
Film director and President of ArtDocFest Vitaly Mansky has curated
the Festival documentary programme and we are honoured to present
the UK premieres of Lyubov Arkus’ Anton is Right Here, Vitaly Mansky’s
Iconoscope and the collective work of Marina Razbezhkina’s students
Winter, Go Away! – a documentation of rising social activism in today’s
Russia.
Many of the screenings will be receiving their UK premieres! We are
thrilled and delighted to open the Festival with the UK premiere of Till
Night Do Us Part by Boris Khlebnikov. This film is very special not only
because it is made by one of the leaders of the New Russian Wave, but
also because it a collective self-portrait of Moscow’s most illustrious
film and media stars – presented here with a characteristic sense of
self-irony.
We are delighted to welcome to London a host of prominent film
directors, actors and producers, who are joining us to present their films
and to enlighten London audiences with a series of fascinating Q&A
sessions. Our special guests include Mikhail Segal, Marina Razbezhkina,
Vasily Sigarev, Yana Troyanova, Alexander Proshkin, Avdotya Smirnova,
Renata Litvinova and Sergei Loban.
Other UK premieres include the award-winning films Me Too by Alexei
Balabanov, Rita’s Last Tale by Renata Litvinova, Conductor by Pavel
Lungin, Redemption by Alexander Proshkin, I Will Be Around by Pavel
Ruminov, Kokoko by Avdotya Smirnova and Convoy by Alexei Mizgirev.
Between them, these films offer a dazzling range of emotions, settings
and styles, portraying Russian culture in all its multifaceted glory.
This year, the Russian Film Festival will be hosting the 2nd RussoBritish Co-Production Forum. Organised in partnership with the Russian
Cinema Fund and the British Film Institute, this event will bring
together leading Russian producers with their British counterparts, with
the aim of establishing a strong relationship between our two great
film industries.
Join us to celebrate Russia in film!
See you at the festival!

Pavel Ruminov’s I’ll Be Around is the deeply moving story of a single mother’s struggle to secure a
future for her son. The life of a young and successful restaurant manager, Inna, comes suddenly and
unexpectedly crumbling down around her when she is diagnosed with an incurable illness.
Determined not to leave her six-year-old son Mitya an orphan, Inna seeks for him new parents. This
endearing, yet tragic story of friendship between mother and son shows how love can overcome
mortality.
Pavel Ruminov, director
Declared to be the “future of Russian cinema” by Afisha magazine, Ruminov started his career directing
music videos for various Russian artists and groups including Zemfira and Mumiy Troll. He first came to
prominence with the release of his third feature film Dead Daughters (2007), an homage to Japanese
horror films which became the subject of a great deal of internet-based hype. He followed this up with
the dark romantic comedy Circumstances (2009).

How is it possible to feel someone else’s pain? This film is a debut of a leading Russian film critic,
Lyubov Arkus. The film follows the life of an autistic boy, Anton, for 3 years. His life is divided between
an apartment with peeling walls on the outskirts of a large city, and a mental hospital. The author, the
camera, the hero. The distance between them shrinks with every passing minute, and the author has
to enter the shot and become a character in the story. However, it is not a story about how one person
helped another, but about how one person recognised herself in another. The film received a standing
applause at the 2012 Venice International Film Festival.
Lyubov Arkus, director
Founder and editor-in-chief of the Séance, Russia’s leading journal on film and associated series of
publications. Since 2006, co-author of TV programme Private Screening (Zakrytyi pokaz) on Channel
One (Russia). From 2006 to 2011, lecturer at Saint Petersburg State University of Film and Television.
Originator and compiler of the 7-volume film encyclopaedia A Modern History of Russian Film, 1986–
2000. Winner of numerous professional awards.

This documentary was filmed by the graduates of Marina Razbezhkina and Mikhail Ugarov’s
Documentary Filmmaking and Theater School, on the initiative of Novaya Gazeta, an independent
Russian newspaper. Ten young directors did not part from their cameras for two months. The result
was a chronicle of Russia’s winter protests – a chronicle of those who make the political climate and
those who are dissatisfied with the makers. A living camera interacts with living heroes.

On the eve of the first New Year after the war: the father of 16-year-old Sasha heroically died at the front,
and her mother steals goods from the police dining room to feed the family, but is this really important for
an ideologically grounded, young komsomol? Finding her mother in the arms of another man, Sasha feels
betrayed. She goes to the police and writes a denunciation of her closest relation. Her cold heart knows
no love and is unable to forgive. Everything changes with the arrival in her life of a young man, August,
who has come to Sasha’s native city with one aim: to bury the bodies of his parents. Redemption is found
through loss, and through feeling pity; Sasha learns to forgive and to love.

Life is more than just existence. A person can feel, suffer, love, and live out his destiny, even when this
means losing that which is most precious: those he loves. Following the lives of the film’s characters, we
watch as Fate takes their loved ones swiftly and brutally, removing any reason to live, even the desire to
stay alive; snatching up their entire world. The film’s characters do not surrender; they stand up in defiance
and declare war on Fate, struggling to the limits of human endurance — and beyond. They reach their own
victories.

It is said that an average human spends about 10 years in front of a TV screen. It does not make
sense to inquire if they are the lost years, for it is impossible to imagine our civilization without
television, even though it was invented less than 100 years ago. Nevertheless, television is not
the only protagonist of this film, for there are two more principal characters, both of them TV stars,
Dan Rather and Igor Kirillov. For the audiences in the U.S. and the Soviet Union their names were
synonymous with the television. Iconoscope is your chance to grasp the entire history of television in
100 minutes of enthralling and paradoxical spectacle.

Love (part 1)
Friendship (part 2)
Respect (part 3)
Cooperation (part 4)
A film of four novellas – Love, Friendship, Respect and Cooperation – that can be watched in any order,
Sergei Loban’s Chapiteau-Show tells the tale of a circus of outsiders whose lives are as chaotic and
carnivalesque as the show that brings them together. The main characters of each of the short stories
arrive at a seaside town at a turning point in their lives. The fragments of their stories develop almost
synchronously – one person goes mad with love, another suffers as cannot be understood by friends, one
tries to win their father’s respect, and another tries to enter into cooperation with partners. As in life, when
everyone sees themselves as the center of their own drama, the characters of Chapiteau-Show are the heroes
of their own story. This film exudes a unique and magical style that will leave you spellbound, as a shouldbe-tragedy becomes a riotous comedy where the show must go on.
Sergey Loban, director
Sergey Loban was educated at the State Institute for Electronics and Maths in Moscow. In 1995, after a
variety of occupations, he started a club that became a centre for underground culture in Moscow. Loban
worked for several TV stations and started a group that made independent films. His film Dust (2005), made
on a minimal budget, won the Russian film critics’ award at the Moscow Film Festival.

by year, passes the same house by
train. He follows the lives of those
who live there and how it changes
year after year. He feels close to them
and seems like there is something he
can’t decide for himself.
A man grows up and leaves his
home. All his life he tries to go
back... to his past. But he can’t
change what happens - his mother
gets old, his house collapses and his
dog dies. It happens to everybody.
Everything turns into memory, a
dream or a film.
A film about the relationship between
the three orphan toys in a closed
space of an attic.

Andrey Konchalovsky
Retrospective
Andrei Konchalovsky has come to be regarded as one of the leading Russian directors in world cinema. Often
collaborating with his brother, director Nikita Mikhalkov, Konchalovsky has developed a career spanning
six decades, featuring a dazzling range of projects. Although originally planning to pursue a musical career,
Konchalovsky’s love for cinema took over and he entered VGIK - the major state film school where he
studied under Mikhail Romm. At VGIK he met Tarkovsky, and they collaborated on Ivan’s Childhood and
Andrei Rublev. For his feature-length debut The First Teacher (1961), he chose to adapt Chingis Aitmatov’s
book about the post-1917 Revolution period in southern Russia. His career soon became more international
in scope, pleasing critics and cinema-goers worldwide with English-language feature films such Maria’s
Lovers (1984), the award-winning Runaway Train (1985), and Homer and Eddie (1989), starring Whoopi
Goldberg. More recent works include the Russian-French co-production House of Fools (2002) and a bold
new musical vision of The Nutcracker (2010).

The setting is a mental hospital on the border of Chechnia and Russia. There is a war somewhere
near, but the psychiatric patients are living a separate life with their own values and complicated
relationships. One day the medical staff vanishes and the patients can finally enjoy the freedom by
turning the house upside down. Soldiers take over the asylum twice. The insanity of war enters the life
of the patients. Yuliya Visotskaya plays the leading part of a young sick woman called Zhanna who is in
love with her imaginary fiancé Bryan Adams (who appears in the film a couple of times). The only way
for her to survive is to love.

Based on The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, a novelette by Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann.
It’s 1920s Vienna. Nine-year-old Mary (Elle Fanning) lives in a house which is filled with lovely things but is
also very lonely. She is continually bothered by her bratty brother Max (Aaron Michael Drozin) and neglected
by her well intentioned but extremely busy parents. On Christmas Eve, her beloved Uncle Albert (Nathan Lane)
presents her with a gift: a wooden nutcracker doll. Mary’s imagination brings the doll to life and together they
embark on a wonderful journey to a world of children’s dreams, miracles and adventures. But an army of rats,
led by the cunning Rat King and his evil mother the Rat Queen, capture the city and enslave its people as they
plan to wipe humanity off the face of the Earth. The Nutcracker (Shirley Henderson) gathers his friends and
they prepare to fight the rats, but he is captured by the enemy. Defeating the rats and freeing the Nutcracker
will not be easy...
