As usual, the Festival brings to London some of the best Russian films of the year. Many of them have already won numerous awards at prestigious national and international film festivals. The London Russian Film Festival is a unique chance to see them all together during the 10 days of the festival, and to immerse yourself in the rich diversity of Russia’s cinematic culture. Film director and President of ArtDocFest Vitaly Mansky has curated the Festival documentary programme and we are honoured to present the UK premieres of Lyubov Arkus’ Anton is Right Here, Vitaly Mansky’s Iconoscope and the collective work of Marina Razbezhkina’s students Winter, Go Away! – a documentation of rising social activism in today’s Russia. Many of the screenings will be receiving their UK premieres! We are thrilled and delighted to open the Festival with the UK premiere of Till Night Do Us Part by Boris Khlebnikov. This film is very special not only because it is made by one of the leaders of the New Russian Wave, but also because it a collective self-portrait of Moscow’s most illustrious film and media stars – presented here with a characteristic sense of self-irony. We are delighted to welcome to London a host of prominent film directors, actors and producers, who are joining us to present their films and to enlighten London audiences with a series of fascinating Q&A sessions. Our special guests include Mikhail Segal, Marina Razbezhkina, Vasily Sigarev, Yana Troyanova, Alexander Proshkin, Avdotya Smirnova, Renata Litvinova and Sergei Loban. Boris Khlebnikov, director Boris Khlebnikov is one of the most eminent directors and screenwriters of the New Wave of Russian cinema. Starting out in the industry as a film critic, he went on to make a name for himself as a director with the feature films Koktebel (2003, alongside Aleksei Popogrebsky) and Free Floating (2006), winning multiple major awards including the Special Jury Prize at the 2003 Moscow International Film Festival and the 2006 Best Film award from the Russian Guild of Film Critics. The film, divided into four separate stories, takes off when the manuscript of a young writer is sent to a publishing house and begins to influence the life of everybody who opens it and reads even a single page. Segal displays his talent as a writer as well as director as he delves deep into the lives of the individuals at the publishing house. In an inexplicably amazing feat, Segal manages to entwine the genres of comedy, satire, thriller and erotica, taking his audience on an exhilarating and witty ride of social commentary. Mikhail Segal, director Mikhail Segal has written a directed a dazzling range of projects, from feature length dramas to pop videos, as well as short films and advertisements. He began his career by directing clips for popular rock and hip-hop artists, gaining nominations for Best Music Video at the MTV Russian Music Awards. Determined not to leave her six-year-old son Mitya an orphan, Inna seeks for him new parents. This endearing, yet tragic story of friendship between mother and son shows how love can overcome mortality. Pavel Ruminov, director Declared to be the “future of Russian cinema” by Afisha magazine, Ruminov started his career directing music videos for various Russian artists and groups including Zemfira and Mumiy Troll. He first came to prominence with the release of his third feature film Dead Daughters (2007), an homage to Japanese horror films which became the subject of a great deal of internet-based hype. He followed this up with the dark romantic comedy Circumstances (2009). This film is a debut of a leading Russian film critic, Lyubov Arkus. The film follows the life of an autistic boy, Anton, for 3 years. His life is divided between an apartment with peeling walls on the outskirts of a large city, and a mental hospital. The author, the camera, the hero. The distance between them shrinks with every passing minute, and the author has to enter the shot and become a character in the story. However, it is not a story about how one person helped another, but about how one person recognised herself in another. The film received a standing applause at the 2012 Venice International Film Festival. A living camera interacts with living heroes. documentaries Russia, 2012, 79 min Documentary Marina Razbezhkina Marina Razbezhkina is one of the most instrumental figures involved in raising a new generation of documentary filmmakers in Russia today. Her first feature film, Harvest Time, was released in 2004 to critical acclaim, winning multiple awards at major film festivals including the Gold Plaque for Best Feature Film at the Chicaco International Film Festival and the FIPRESCI prize at the Moscow International Film Festival. In 2008 she also served a member of the jury at the Kinotavr Film Festival. The Marina Razbezhkina School of Documentary Films and Theatre is now one of the most popular film schools in Russia, the graduates of which have gone on to win prizes at Russian and international film festivals. Alexander Proshkin, director Alexander Proshkin worked for many years in television, directing literary and dramatic programs for Central Television. His second feature film. Vasily Sigarev, director Vasily Sigarev is an award-winning playwright, director and screenwriter. His third play, Ladybird, was produced by the Royal Court Theatre, London, in 2004. Sigarev won the 2002 Evening Standard Charles Wintour Award for Most Promising Playwright. His plays often deal with the reality of decay in post-Soviet Russia. After the suicide of one the deserters, the remaining soldier and the commander spend the day in Moscow, where they are confronted with the realities of life in the metropolis. As their friendship blossoms, the cynical captain’s attitude to life is changed forever. Alexei Mizgirev, director Born in the small Russian town Myski in 1974, Alexey Mizgirev graduated with a philosophy degree from the Tomsk State University in 1998 and studied film directing under Vadim Abdrashitov at the Film Institute VGIK in 2005. His first feature, The Hard-Hearted, won the award for Best Debut at the Russian Film Festival in Sochi. Aleksei Balabanov, director Aleksei Balabanov is a popular Russian filmmaker. The main characters of each of the short stories arrive at a seaside town at a turning point in their lives. The fragments of their stories develop almost synchronously – one person goes mad with love, another suffers as cannot be understood by friends, one tries to win their father’s respect, and another tries to enter into cooperation with partners. As in life, when everyone sees themselves as the center of their own drama, the characters of Chapiteau-Show are the heroes of their own story.
