The Retirement Resource A Maple Knoll Communities newsletter Summer 2015 S P EC IA L New Construction at Maple Knoll Village: The Courtyard at Kensington P O IN TS O F Maple Knoll Village is pleased to announce a new construction project underway this summer, The Courtyard at I N T E R E ST: Kensington. The Courtyard will New Construction finalize the original Kensington Place project that began in 2006. at Maple Knoll AL State Survey Leading Age Ohio Stars MKV Resident Inducted into Ohio Senior Hall of Fame Upcoming Events University of Cincinnati Affiliation Stay Connected WMKV Golf Outing Marketing Team Contact Information The first phase of the Kensington Place Apartments was completed by Great Traditions Homes in 2008. Phase I of the project consisted of three apartment buildings located near the Maple Knoll Village Swan Pond. The luxury apartments have large open floor plans with 10 foot ceilings and a generous amount of natural light. The one, two and three bedroom units vary in square footage from 988- 2,013 sq. ft. With the wide variety of floor plans and the modern architecture, Kensington quickly became a popular commodity. There has been a waiting list for these units since 2013. With the high demand for luxury apartments Maple Knoll is now in the beginning stages of Phase II, The Courtyard at Kensington. Phase II will consist of two villas and 10 independent living apartments. This will complete the Kensington Place neighborhood which is located in the heart of the Maple Knoll Village campus. Kensington Place is noted for its beautiful landscaping and apartments overlooking a pond. Connected by walkways, it is close to the main building with dining venues, library and activities. Continued on page 2 PAGE 2 Continued from page 1 The villas will each have two bedrooms, a den and a two car garage with backyards overlooking Swan Lake. The villas will be followed by two additional apartment buildings. Each building will consist of five 2 bedroom/den apartments ranging in size from 1,400- 1,700 square feet. Maple Knoll Vice President of Marketing, Rose Denman, shares that “open floor plans, a significant amount of natural lighting, and two bedrooms with a study are all prerequisites that many older adults would enjoy in retirement living. The Courtyard of Kensington meets the market demand for these requirements along with upscale finishes including hardwood floors, fireplaces, granite countertops, and customization options”. The site work for the project is currently being prepared, and construction of the villas will be under way this month. The apartments will not be far behind. As expected, prospects have been thrilled with the proposed floor plans. One villa was spoken for within weeks of releasing the plans and one villa still remains available. The first building is now 100% reserved with all five apartments spoken for at this time. We cannot wait for the long awaited dream to be brought to life and to welcome our new residents to Maple Knoll Village! Maple Knoll Village’s Assisted Living Receives Deficiency-Free Survey from Ohio Department of Health One of the highest confirmations of quality service is for a healthcare facility to receive a deficiency-free survey from the State Department of Public Health. Maple Knoll Village’s Assisted Living is pleased to have been found deficiency-free on its 2015 annual state survey. This is an unusually outstanding accomplishment on the part of the administration and staff. The achievement is made possible by the daily commitment and dedication of an exceptional staff. The survey is conducted annually by the Ohio Department of Health and has a checklist of areas and categories to examine. Some of the categories include: meeting with residents, family members and staff; reviewing medical records; reviewing the residents’ dining areas; and observing the environment and safety factors of the home. Ultimately, the survey evaluates the overall quality of life and quality of care of the facility to ensure it is operating by the Department of Health’s standards. Maple Knoll Village’s Assisted Living survey was completed on March 26th, 2015. After its inspection of the above categories and more, the Department of Health’s team had declared Maple Knoll Village as deficiency free. PAGE 3 Maple Knoll Employees Presented LeadingAge Ohio Stars Award Maple Knoll Village, a continuing care retirement community in Springdale, is proud to have employees that exemplify dedication, teamwork, friendliness and more to make Maple Knoll a top-notch facility. Each year LeadingAge Ohio offers facilities, like Maple Knoll, the opportunity to nominate employees that have excelled throughout the year with a unique Stars Award. The Stars Award recognizes non-management staff who work behind the scenes to meet the daily needs of residents, clients, and program participants. These are employees who go above and beyond their required duties to improve the lives of older adults in our community. Maple Knoll Stars with their managers Nominations are submitted by residents, clients, family members or fellow staff members from each community to a nomination committee for review. Maple Knoll Chaplain Steve Copeland spearheaded the nomination committee for awardees at Maple Knoll Village. From there, LeadingAge Ohio selected the best candidates from throughout the state. Steve shared “We have so many employees that go above and beyond what they have to and this is a grand opportunity to recognize these individuals for the differences they make every day”. On Wednesday, April 29th, LeadingAge Ohio held a special ceremony where five Maple Knoll employees were given the Stars Award for their commitment and dedication to their jobs. These individuals were: Chuck Conti, Connie Gerdes, Amelia Harlow, Devonna Jennings and Mike Williams. Each employee excels in their position and makes a difference in the community. They were honored with a lunch presentation with other awardees from Southwest Ohio. Maple Knoll is grateful for these dedicated employees! Maple Knoll Resident Inducted into Ohio Senior Citizens Hall of Fame PAGE 4 Maple Knoll Village now boasts a Hall of Fame resident in our community. John “Jack” Hughes of Coventry Court will be one of twelve accomplished older Ohioans inducted into the Ohio Senior Citizens Hall of Fame in Columbus during a special ceremony on Thursday, May 28, 2015. The honor is bestowed from The Ohio Department of Aging, the Ohio Association of Area Agencies on Aging and members of the Ohio General Assembly. Nominations for the Hall of Fame are evaluated on the impact of current contributions or a continuation of work and accomplishment initiated before age 60. The selection of Hughes to receive this honor is befitting of this criteria. At 87, “Jack”, as he is known to family and friends, is continuing to lead an impressive life as a Maple Knoll Village resident. He is an avid cyclist and bikes an average of 100 miles a week, rain or shine, at the nearby Loveland bike trail. The passion for biking began over 40 years ago when Jack was diagnosed with Type I diabetes. This commitment to better health lead to cross country trips, cycling through Switzerland with his daughter, and biking through Death Valley to benefit The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. His steadfast companion and bicycle of choice is a 30 year-old Raleigh whose many parts have been lovingly replaced over the years. In addition to his impressive fitness routine, Jack is also a dedicated philanthropist to causes he holds dear. Since moving to Maple Knoll in 2006, Jack has been a loyal supporter to our community and special projects which speak to his heart. To share his love of fitness, he made it possible for exercise equipment to be outfitted in the Hemsworth Wellness Center and contributed to a cycling room so all residents and staff could enjoy indoor cycling. In 2013, he and fellow resident Richard Neubaurer, M.D. created The Richard Neubauer, M.D. and John Hughes Hospice Center to support families and their loved ones during transitional care at Maple Knoll Village. The Center is overseen by University of Cincinnati Physicians and consists of ten deluxe private rooms and a family lounge area to provide care, support and a nurturing space to those nearing the end of their life with comfort and dignity. And if that were not enough, Jack continues to deliver Meals on Wheels to homebound elderly and shares his good health and spirit with those who look forward to a special delivery every day. Because of his personal and philanthropic accomplishments, Jack Hughes’ recognition is well-deserved. Jack will join more than 400 honorees who have been inducted since 1978, with the hall honoring individuals 60 and older who are native-born Ohioans or who have been Ohio residents for 10 years or more. This year’s nominees ranged in age from 72 to 95. PAGE 5 Join Us For Upcoming Events! Please join us for upcoming events at Maple Knoll Village! Maple Knoll Village Signs Formal Affiliation with University of Cincinnati PAGE 6 Maple Knoll Village, a continuing care retirement community in Springdale, has always strived to be a leader in innovation and technology for their residents and clients. Now, a partnership with the University of Cincinnati will continue to bring Maple Knoll to the forefront in telehealth and health care technology. On Monday, April 27th The University of Cincinnati (UC) and Maple Knoll Village (MKV) signed a formal agreement partnering MKV, an industry leader in post-acute and home and community-based services, with UC experts in gerontological nursing, geriatric medicine, robotics, telehealth, sensor technology and human factors. The relationship was based on a 30-year history of collaboration in nursing, medical, and pharmacy education and practice. In 2012, the relationship expanded through a partnership with the UC College of Nursing, and a villa on the campus of MKV was transformed into a learning and test environment for the development of technologies aimed at keeping seniors in their own homes or communities longer. Maple Knoll President/CEO Jim Formal signs affiliation agreement with University of Cincinnati College of Nursing Dean Greer Glazer The goals of this affiliation will be to foster cooperation and interaction between MKV and UC for the benefit of both as well as their constituent groups, to enhance educational opportunities for Maple Knoll residents and The University of Cincinnati students and faculty, to increase intergenerational exposure and activities, to provide employment as well as research and intern opportunities for The University of Cincinnati students, and lastly to identify techniques and create innovative products that will improve older adults access to care and allow them to age in place. Maple Knoll is already gaining access to new advanced technology in the form of an UC College of Engineering Dean Teik Lim, Maple Knoll President/CEO Jim Formal, UC College of Nursing Dean Greer Innovation Collaboratory “Smart” House on campus, featuring mechanical controls systems, Glazer and UC College of Medicine Dean Bill Ball human patient simulator occupants, sensors and other devices. The Collaboratory House is home to four different telehealth devices which include remote control telehealth robots, a small table top robot PAGE 7 and telehealth for biometric monitoring. Interprofessional developments are occurring with students from the College of Nursing, Engineering, Allied Health, and College of Medicine who are working on projects that are devoted to optimizing a person’s ability to age in place. Most recently, a group of forty UC nursing students interacted via telehealth remote presence with residents residing in the independent apartments on the Maple Knoll campus. The students gain real life experiences through these interactions. The partnership benefits both the residents and the students through intergenerational sharing of history, technology, and care coping skills. Residents are not only getting firsthand knowledge of changes in healthcare but are receiving access to care in a way they never dreamed possible. The use of telehealth robots on campus will allow for in depth patient assessments to occur, specialists to be present virtually for quicker interventions, fewer trips to the emergency room, quality of care at lower costs, patient education lessons, monitoring, remote communications with a health navigator, and the creation of a student centered workforce readiness development in the field of telehealth care delivery. Engineering students benefit from their hands on experience with technology long before they graduate. The students have the opportunity to interact with the end user of the products that engineers design, manufacturer and repair. The “smart” house serves as an incubator for students’ innovations and inventions to be tested and evaluated before launching them in real life settings. Sensor systems teamed up with telehealth remote monitoring will provide predictions and safety check points within one’s own home so that a person’s lifestyle patterns will be identified for greater person centered “Flo-bot”, the UC telehealth robot, is already making rounds with physicians and staff in skilled nursing care delivery. A telehealth visitor goes a long way to help ease the stress of individuals living alone. “We are thrilled to see this kind of technology and partnership occurring at Maple Knoll Village,” Jim Formal, Maple Knoll President and CEO, stated. “Our mission has always been to provide exceptional care for older adults in the community and with the help of the University of Cincinnati we can be a part of groundbreaking technology that will do just that.” To learn more about the cutting edge technology that UC is bringing to Maple Knoll please call 513.782.2423.
