Learning Communities Peavine Metis Settlement Community Status Update Jan to Oct, 2013 January 29th, 2013 First Community Workshop Aboriginal Business Link Canada Guest Speaker Aaron Portier Mr. Glen Anderson is one of our newly elected council members with Al C & H M February Community Workshop Health & Wellness Guest Speaker Theresa Doody Theresa conducted a personal health assessment with information on healthy eating and diet, weight & routines February NCCP Level 1 Hockey Certification 14 participants received their certification to coach the Sport of Hockey from level atoms to Midget: In support of youth programs in the area. Participants from Little Buffalo, East Prairie & Peavine! March 27th, 2013 “Hopeology” When We are Healthy in partnership with Bishop Routhier School Guest Speaker Iner Cardinal Program Director from Gift Lake • Mr. Iner Cardinal presented a workshop about creating hope for our children and spoke about the obstacles that our children face at home and in school with Bullying. The importance & key to creating successful children is attendance in school everyday & constant reassurance and role modeling a positive attitude! April, 2013 Basic Home Maintenance Workshop in partnership with CEC and NLC at old NLC cap site May 2013 “Moccasin Making” Guest Speaker Gail Gladu • Blaze and Lois Shaw did videotaping and interviews this session! Very successful 16 participants and 5 finished their pair a month after this workshop! Great reviews, Thank you Learning Communities ! June 24th, 2013 LC CW Peavine Metis Settlement Forestry fires, permits and safety procedures Environment Sustainable Resource Development Guest Speaker Robert Collins Mr. Robert Collins informed the community about fire permits and discussed the importance of adherence to conserving our environment and paying special attention to the herbs and plants that are protected in certain areas of our Metis Settlement, these are to be kept for our traditional medicinal purposes. He has worked with this gov’t organization for 17 yrs. July 4th LC CW “Building Safe Communities” Guest Speaker Brad Cunningham MSGC Justice Peavine Metis Settlement The Yellow Chart is the next steps to be taken with community partnerships. August 29th & 30th, 2013 “Drum Therapy-Drum Making” Guest Speaker Lyla Carifelle In partnership with Peavine Parent Link & Victim Services NLC CEC Chair Hazel Vicklund & community Elder with LC-CC Community Partnerships understanding the positive working relationships September 23rd, 2013 LC CW “Zumba & health & Fitness Guest Speaker Cathy with 32 participants! Great Success! Participants Enjoying the Catering after Class & Feeling Great! A true success to positive and healthy lifestyles Good Healthy food and energy reviving Group Fitness is continued with community interest with children and adults until December 2013 October 23rd, 2013 LC CW “Laundry Soap Making & Homework Planning” Guest Speaker Tara Gauchier A new learning experience and how to conserve Laundry soap! Mentor Circle Success: Ms. Peggy McCarthy Peggy has worked with the Peavine Aboriginal Head Start for 17 yrs. She is our Main Mentor and success story of Learning Communities, she is understanding, enjoys a new learning experience, is part of Northern AB children's development council, supports learning to support the Metis Community Of Peavine! Group Picture on the top left, Carmen McDermot on top right from learner to mentor, Kerry Cunningham bottom left, Shelley Gauchier currently enrolled in ECD level 3 & Suzanne Willier currently Daycare director in Sucker Creek- Great support network developed Success Story Taylor Cunningham Graduated from St.Andrews High School in High Prairie and is a member of the Peavine Metis Settlement who enrolled in May to the Health Care Aide Program at Northern Lakes College, got accepted and is now a Full-Time Post-Secondary student from High School Graduation to College Programs. Learning Communities has encouraged and supported this learner to continue her education. Just few things that I enjoy…Hunting, running, dancing and supporting higher learning to give hope to individuals to share their success & increase their livelihood and self sufficiency!
