Asian Pacific American Municipal Officials BECOME A MEMBER OF ASIAN PACIFIC AMERICAN MUNICIPAL OFFICIALS WHAT IS APAMO? WEBSITE, EMAIL AND STAFF CONTACT APAMO is an NLC constituency group founded in 1985. Its mission is to provide Asian Pacific American municipal officials with forums to share ideas; discussion groups to develop strategies for improving municipal governance; and debates on policy issues and programs that contribute to the success of America’s cities and towns. Keep up to date with APAMO activities through the website: www.nlc.org/apamo. APAMO news is also regularly featured in NLC’s "The Weekly," social media, and via eblasts to members. Through a city’s membership to NLC, APAMO offers its individual members opportunities to become involved in the overall work of NLC through several venues such as serving on the NLC Board of Directors, Advisory Council, standing committees, councils, policy/advocacy steering committees and task forces. When called upon by NLC, APAMO members take part in meeting with Congress to advocate for NLC’s annual legislative priorities, help obtain funding for municipal programs, or prevent burdensome regulations. THE NATIONAL LEAGUE OF CITIES is the voice for America’s cities and towns. For over 90 years, NLC has educated municipal leaders, provided technical assistance, and advocated in our nation’s capital on behalf of cities and towns across America. NLC’s diverse membership network connects municipalities to each other and works collaboratively to advance municipal partnerships and innovative local practices. NLC’s work not only benefits cities and towns but also the local officials who represent them. Founded in 1924, NLC is the oldest and largest national organization representing municipal governments throughout the nation. Its mission is to strengthen and promote cities as centers of opportunity, leadership, and governance. Today, APAMO and NLC provide a powerful network for information-sharing and advocacy on behalf of America’s cities in Washington, D.C., and all state capitals. ENGAGE THROUGH APAMO MEETINGS AND EVENTS APAMO meets at least twice a year during NLC’s Congress of Cities and Exposition in November and additionally at the March Congressional City Conference. The annual Celebrate Diversity Breakfast, cosponsored with NLC’s other constituency groups, brings prominent speakers to colleagues for presentations on timely cross-cultural issues during the Congressional City Conference. Staff members at the National League of Cities headquarters in Washington, D.C., manage the coordination of APAMO’s activities throughout the year. To contact staff about APAMO, email [email protected]. “APAMO is the vehicle with which Asian Pacific American (APA) elected officials throughout the country can come together to engage in thoughtful dialogue and exchange of ideas. Our numbers are increasing as is our influence and contribution to our cities and NLC.” Suzanne Chan, Councilmember, Fremont, California OPPORTUNITIES FOR LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT In addition to NLC’s two annual conferences, APAMO members participate in pre-conference seminars and workshops, roundtable discussions on vital issues, general membership meetings, networking forums, and social events. Leadership positions within APAMO and within NLC are available for those with a desire to make a difference. APAMO members receive regular briefings from NLC leadership and policy staff and are encouraged to develop national policy positions in their areas of interest for NLC by participating on policy steering committees through the endorsement of their state municipal leagues. Members are also encouraged to serve on the NLC Board of Directors and NLC’s councils and various task forces. APAMO elects a Board of Directors annually at the NLC conference. Applications are made available on the website for those interested in serving on APAMO’s Board two months prior to the Board election. To serve on APAMO’s Board, individuals must be elected municipal officials from NLC member cities and be current in their APAMO dues and fees.
