A good family is a blessing to
be shared. In today's Gospel,
Jesus speaks to His gathered
disciples. He sends them out
to draw others into the family
of God. They are to make
disciples in every nation and
baptize them "in the name of
the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit." They
are also to teach these new members of the family
everything that Jesus has taught them.
We are called to this same mission. Jesus promises to be
with us always as we share our faith in Him.
Describe the one thing you enjoy most about your
parish family. What are some of the ways you might
invite others to share in parish family life? How can you
help to make improvements in your parish family?
What ideas do you have about how your parish can
reach out to people from other nations and cultures?
What can you do to implement these ideas?

CENTERING PRAYER GROUP
Centering prayer is based on the wisdom saying of Jesus in the Sermon on the
Mount, “…but when you pray, go to your inner room, close the door and pray
to your Father in secret. And your Father who sees in secret, will reward
you.”(MT6:6) The method of centering prayer quiets the mind and allows us
to be present to God as God is present to us. These gatherings are open to all
who are presently engaged in the practice of centering prayer. The regular
meetings take place on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month
from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in NLC 206. If you would like to find out more about
this ancient practice of prayer, contact Bruce Hassett, 704-641-9041 or Janie
Normile, 803-396-8016.

SUPPORTIVE HOUSING INNOVATIVE
PARTNERSHIP (SHIP)
DONATED GOODS
SATURDAY, JUNE 8, FROM 8 A.M. TO NOON
Our collaboration with The Charlotte Housing Authority,
The Salvation Army and St. Gabriel Church had a goal of
outfitting 60 apartments for homeless women and their
children. We have reached the goal and we’re still
moving forward! Many of these wonderful families have
started moving on after getting a great start from
SHIP. Our focus now is to re-fit the vacant apartments to
help more families sail on to independent living.
The collection of donated goods takes place the second
Saturday of the month from 8 a.m. to noon under the
Daily Mass Chapel. Items accepted include gently-used
clothing, furniture, working appliances, household items
and moving boxes, and may be dropped off at St.
Matthew during scheduled donation times. We are happy
to pick up large furniture or appliances on this day from
homes within a 10-mile radius of St. Matthew, if
arrangements are made in advance and no later than
noon the Thursday (two days) before collection day.
For the safety of our volunteers, heavy items will be
picked up from first floor locations only (restrictions
apply). Please note that we do not accept pianos, large
TVs, drop side baby cribs, used mattresses or box
springs. If you would like more information or to
schedule a pickup, contact Randy and Ann Mazur at
704-544-4667 or [email protected].
Our greatest needs are NEW twin sheets sets, mattress
pads, blankets and comforters (neutral shades),
NEW bath towel sets, vacuums, small microwaves, clock
radios, irons and small ironing boards, silverware
(knives, forks, spoons), kitchen knives, sets of glasses,
cookie sheets, roasting pans, paper towels, toilet paper,
Kleenex, first aid kits, dining tables and chairs and
dressers.
To arrange a furniture or large item pickup,
contact [email protected]. To donate
housewares, contact [email protected].
Questions, call Maureen Regele at 704-605-5444.
YOUNG ADULT LIFE
Furniture pickups will continue on the third Saturday of

T HE MOST HOLY TRINITY
June 3, 2012
ST. MATTHEW CATHOLIC CHURCH
FEAST OF THE MOST HOLY TRINITY
Trinity Sunday celebrates the most profound mystery of our faith: The Holy Trinity, the
presence of God as Three in One. It is called a mystery not because it is a puzzle that we
attempt to solve, but because it is a reality above our human comprehension. We may begin to
grasp it intellectually, but ultimately must accept that we can only know the Holy Trinity
through worship, symbol and faith. What a challenge this poses for the Christian believer who
knows and accepts the Holy Trinity dwells in our soul in grace, but also calls us to a
relationship with Him. How do we do this? In our limited state, how can we know and love a
mystery?
We do this through the small daily actions we can take of meditating on instructions on the
Faith and reciting prayers composed in honor of the Trinity. For instance, although we recite it so often that it tends to
slide by our consciousness, the Glory Be invites grace into our souls when we pray:
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world
without end. Amen.
Certainly, we cannot hope to know the Holy Trinity unless God himself reaches out to us first and helps us along the
way. Making ourselves open to God and raising our hearts to Him in petition, we can join in this prayer:
My Lord and my God, my only hope, hear my prayer so that I may not give in to discouragement and cease to seek you.
May I desire always to see your face. Give me strength for the search. You who caused me to find you and gave the hope
of a more perfect knowledge of you, I place before you my steadfastness, that you may preserve it, and my weakness, that
you may heal it. I place before you my knowledge, and my ignorance. If you open the door to me, welcome the one who
enters. If you have closed the gate, open it to the one who calls. Make me always remember you, understand you and love
you. Increase those gifts in me until I am completely changed.
When we come into your presence, these many things we talk about now without understanding them will cease, and you
alone will remain everything in everyone, and then we will sing as one an eternal hymn of praise and we too will become
one with you.
~St. Augustine
THE LEGEND OF HOW ST. PATRICK USED THE SHAMROCK
TO EXPLAIN THE MYSTERY OF THE TRINITY
There are several popular legends about how St. Patrick used the shamrock to explain the
mystery of the Trinity. According to one story, St. Patrick went to Connaught where he met
two of King Laoghaire’s daughters, Ethne and Fedelm. St. Patrick had been unable to
persuade the king to convert, but he convinced the king’s daughters. During their time of
instruction St. Patrick used a shamrock to visualize the mystery of the Trinity, how a single
plant with three leaves is analogous to the one Triune God with three separate and distinct
Persons.
According to another legend, St. Patrick used a shamrock to help explain the Trinity in a
sermon he preached directly to King Laoghaire.
According to a third legend, St. Patrick was traveling and happened upon a number of Irish chieftains along a meadow.
The tribal leaders were curious about the Trinity and asked St. Patrick for an explanation. So he bent down, picked a
shamrock, showed it to them and explained how the three leaves are part of the one plant, and how similarly the three
Persons, Father, Son, and Spirit, are part of one Supreme Being.

Revelation, the last book of the New Testament, is one of the most talked about books in the Bible. This book has inspired fear,
millennial predictions and horror throughout Christian history. And yet, the book is seen by all Christians as part of the Word
of God and, therefore, part and parcel of the Good News of Jesus Christ. Is it a fairy tale or science fiction? These sessions will
probe the setting, the symbolic writing style and the structure of Revelation in order to come to a deeper understanding of this
book’s Good News and place in Scripture and its revelatory message. Please bring a Bible!
C. Centering Prayer Introductory Workshop with Judy O’Toole
Saturday, June 16, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
New Life Center Banquet Room
Registration Fee: $30
This workshop offers a contemporary presentation of the discipline of centering prayer, a method of
prayer which prepares us to receive the gift of God's presence, traditionally called contemplation. It
consists of responding to the Spirit of Christ by consenting to God's presence and action within. It furthers the development of
contemplative prayer by quieting our faculties to cooperate with the gift of God's presence. It emphasizes prayer as a personal
relationship with God. The day will include several talks on centering prayer. You will learn what it is and how to practice it,
with two periods of centering prayer and a time for questions. Lunch will be served.
For workshop information, contact Michael Burck at [email protected] or 704-541-8362 x 4.

We’re more connected to each other than any generation in the history of existence. Our friends, families, coworkers – really
everyone in the world – are a touchscreen away and not just with a fact or two, but with whole timelines of our every
thought. But in all this connectedness, where is God? In the midst of all this busyness, what can we do to know ourselves, our
friends, and our Lord more deeply? In this workshop, we’ll discuss how our technologies shape our spirituality, for better or
worse, and search for ways to slow down and truly get connected.

The Silver Rose
Please join us on Saturday, June 9, at 4 p.m. in the Daily Mass Chapel for a rosary and prayer service for the
sanctity of life. The Knights of Columbus and the St. Matthew Respect Life Ministry are sponsoring this
prayer service in honor of Our Lady of Guadeloupe, the patroness of pro-life.
The Silver Rose dates back to 1960 with a pilgrimage of a rose across North America, from Canada to Mexico
that culminated in passing of the rose across the border on the eve of the Feast of Our Lady of Guadeloupe.
The rose was the symbol that Our Lady gave to Juan Diego as proof to the bishop of her visit.
The initial devotion was started in 1960 by a group of Squires, boys yet too young to join the Knights of
Columbus. This year there are three Silver Roses making their way across the country. One will be here on
June 9 before moving to South Carolina the next day. Please come pray with us in honor of Our Lady and for
the sanctity of life.
