As a shepherd tends his flock when he finds himself among his scattered sheep, so will I tend my sheep. I will rescue them from every place where they were scattered when it was cloudy and dark. I myself will pasture my sheep; I myself will give them rest, says the Lord GOD. The lost I will seek out, the strayed I will bring back, the injured I will bind up, the sick I will heal, but the sleek and the strong I will destroy, shepherding them rightly. As for you, my sheep, says the Lord GOD, I will judge between one sheep and another, between rams and goats. Gospel Mt 25:31-46 Jesus said to his disciples: "When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit upon his glorious throne, and all the nations will be assembled before him. And he will separate them one from another, as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. He will place the sheep on his right and the goats on his left. Then the king will say to those on his right, 'Come, you who are blessed by my Father. Inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me.' Then the righteous will answer him and say, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? When did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? When did we see you ill or in prison, and visit you?' And the king will say to them in reply, 'Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of the least brothers of mine, you did for me.' Then he will say to those on his left, 'Depart from me, you accursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, a stranger and you gave me no welcome, naked and you gave me no clothing, ill and in prison, and you did not care for me.' Then they will answer and say, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or ill or in prison, and not minister to your needs?' He will answer them, 'Amen, I say to you, what you did not do for one of these least ones, you did not do for me.' And these will go off to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life." Responsorial Psalm Ps 23 (#23 GC2; verses 1, 2, 4, 5) R. Shepherd me, O God, beyond my wants, beyond my fears, from death into life. God is my shepherd, so nothing shall I want, I rest in the meadows of faithfulness and love, I walk by the quiet waters of peace. R. Shepherd me, O God, beyond my wants, beyond my fears, from death into life. Gently you raise me and heal my weary soul, you lead me by pathways of righteousness and truth, my spirit shall sing the music of your name. R. Shepherd me, O God, beyond my wants, beyond my fears, from death into life. You have set me a banquet of love in the face of hatred, crowning me with love beyond my power to hold. R. Shepherd me, O God, beyond my wants, beyond my fears, from death into life. Surely your kindness and mercy follow me all the days of my life, I will dwell in the house of my God forevermore. R. Shepherd me, O God, beyond my wants, beyond my fears, from death into life. Reading II 1 Cor 15:20-26, 28 Brothers and sisters: Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For since death came through man, the resurrection of the dead came also through man. For just as in Adam all die, so too in Christ shall all be brought to life, but each one in proper order: Christ the firstfruits; then, at his coming, those who belong to Christ; then comes the end, when he hands over the kingdom to his God and Father, when he has destroyed every sovereignty and every authority and power. For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. The last enemy to be destroyed is death. When everything is subjected to him, then the Son himself will also be subjected to the one who subjected everything to him, so that God may be all in all. Parishioners Selected for the 2011- 2012 Stephen James O’Leary James was a budget and program analyst at the Pentagon with the space and missile program. He retired to Arkansas to start up a Christian non-profit organization called the Ol' shalom Ranch, a place of peace and prayer in the woods for private retreats, prayer, and private meditation. James' organizational skills, listening skills and compassion for others are the qualities of a Stephen Minister. James' philosophy on life is to Cheryl Swaffar Cheryl feels that she’s a down to earth person, loves to talk and enjoys listening to others. She comes in contact with a number of people every day at work and says through conversation with many of them, she has learned a lot that has helped her in her own life. She believes that being there for others whenever possible is a very rewarding experience and finds joy in doing so. She gives credit to her parents in learning how to care for others. Being in the Stephen Ministry, she hopes to enhance her gifts in listening and Cassie Barlow New to our parish, has two degrees in Psychology. Currently she is in the Air Force. She is the proud owner of a Therapy Dog, a dachshund, and has visited many hospitals and rest homes, providing comfort to the residences. The ability to help others would be extremely rewarding to her. She feels she has been very blessed in her life and she would like to be able to help others. Dennis Shaw Dennis is a very generous contributor to Holy Trinity. He and his wife Phyllis we all know are with the Knights of Columbus, and enjoy sponsoring breakfasts, dinners and a good time in our parish. Dennis currently is a driver with Metro Mobility, a transportation program for handicapped and senor citizens in Colorado Springs and neighboring communities. Dennis feels that the skills learned in the Stephen Ministry training will help him grow – personally, spiritually, and professionally. We plan to provide food baskets for approximately 125 families for both Thanksgiving and Christmas. We will distribute baskets of canned food items and fresh vegetables, as well as, a $10 gift card for the purchase of a turkey/ham. We are asking all parishioners to consider donating food item(s) from the list below: Use it or Lose It When I hear the Gospel reading for this Sunday, I wonder what that third servant was doing all that time, after he buried the talent he was given. Probably nothing. What strikes me is that the word for money in this reading is “talent,” which in our language is an ability or skill. So maybe this parable can remind us to use our abilities and not let them go to waste. It is sad to see someone doing a job that he is not very good at, just because he never developed the talents he has. But if you know what gifts or abilities God gave you, you can develop them to be much more than you expected. A person might be strong and fast, but if she exercises and practices, she could be a great athlete. Spiritual gifts are the same way: Just having one doesn’t make you a saint. So how do you know what gifts you have? First, ask God in your prayers to show what gifts He has given you. Get a spiritual director, or even your parish priest, and talk about your life, your strengths and weaknesses. Read about saints and how they used their gifts to serve the Lord. Read the scriptures, especially the Acts of the Apostles, or letters of St. Paul (e.g., 1 Cor 12:111). Listen humbly to friends or loved ones who can tell what strengths they see in you. Second, look for ways to use your gifts. Check the parish bulletin, website or diocesan newspaper for activities and organizations that you could take part in. Hospitals, schools, shelters, and nursing homes frequently have opportunities for volunteers. If one kind of service seems attractive to you, that could be God’s way of telling you to try it. On the other hand, a job that seems very challenging or a need for service that you can start in the parish or community could be what you need to stretch your spiritual muscles. Just remember that you are called to service in Baptism and Confirmation. Don’t bury that call by pro- STUFFING MIX INSTANT MASHED POTATOES CANNED SWEET POTATOES CANNED VEGGIES CRANBERRY SAUCE GRAVY MIX PIE FILLING PIE CRUST (NON PERISHABLE) Food collection bins can be found at both entrances of the church. We will be collecting these food items thru December 11, 2011. We are also accepting cash contributions for the purchase of gift cards and fresh produce (please make your check out to HT SHARE and drop in the regular offertory basket). Due to the loss of a viable food supplier, the HT SHARE program will cease operations after the Thanksgiving and Christmas food drives. Any excess monetary funds will be transferred to a special HT account specifically designated to feed the poor. Thank you for all your past support of this outreach ministry to help feed our brothers and sisters in Christ. In addition to the food drives, parishioners will also be able to donate wrapped gifts through our Christmas Giving Tree program (more info next month). The local chapter of the American Guild of Organists will present a concert called "Organ Plus One" on Monday evening November 14, 7pm at the Cathedral. The program will include the organ plus instrumentalists or singers. Kate Johnson, Music Director of the Cathedral, and local favorite Valerie Nicolosi will be featured in the concert. HOLY TRINITY CATHOLIC CHURCH SENIOR DINNER November 20 Dinner will be held Sunday, November 20, from 1:00pm to 2:30pm in the cafeteria. The cost is $3 per person. The menu includes turkey and dressing, yams, peas, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes and gravy, salad, dessert, and rolls. Please RSVP to Arlene at 633-7336. We rely on your help to serve 50 to 70 seniors every month. If you are interested in occasionally helping to cook an item for the dinner, please call Mike Bartusek at 632-2456 During the month of November, the month of All Souls, we remember our deceased loved ones in the Book of the Dead. This beautiful book was purchased in 2009, Holy Trinity’s jubilee year, and begins with the names of those in our parish who entered into eternity in the Year of Grace 2009 (Advent 2008 to the Feast of Christ the King 2009). The book will be open to the Year of Grace 2011 where this year’s names are recorded. These names will be sung in the Litany of the Dead at the weekend Masses November 12th and 13th. May we, as members of their immediate family of faith, keep these loved ones in our prayers and hold their memories in our hearts. Parishioners are also invited to bring framed photos no larger than 8”x10”. Please leave your pictures in the basket by the Baptismal Font and make sure your name and phone number are on the back of the photo so we can make sure it is returned. Join us in building a Faith Fellowship For Families In Crisis. We will meet on Saturday afternoons at the Hope House from 3:00 to 5:00 for pot-luck refreshments, prayer, bible study, support and education regarding life’s toughest issues. We will fellowship to discover ways we can live the gospels together to help one another overcome the crises we face. Children are welcome. Society gives us so many distractions and false idols, young people need support and help to stay true to their faith. All high school and college age men are invited to join Fr. Jim Williams for monthly prayer and discussion sessions focused on hearing and following God’s call. Our goal is to help all young men develop their spirituality and their ability to discern God’s will for their lives. Refreshments will be served at each session following which we will pray Vespers, explore avenues of God’s call in our lives, and discuss our journeys of faith. Our sessions will aid and encourage their search for meaning and vocation for their lives. Sons of Benedict XVI Sunday, November 13, 6:00pm Holy Trinity Hope House MEMORIAL OF ST. ELIZABETH OF HUNGARY November 17 In her short life Elizabeth manifested such great love for the poor and suffering that she has become the patroness of Catholic charities and of the Secular Franciscan Order. The daughter of the King of Hungary, Andrew II, Elizabeth chose a life of penance and asceticism over a life of leisure and luxury. This choice endeared her in the hearts of the common people throughout Europe. At the age of 14 Elizabeth was married to Louis of Thuringia (a German principality), whom she deeply loved. She bore three children. Under the spiritual direction of a Franciscan friar, she led a life of prayer, sacrifice and service to the poor and sick. Seeking to become one with the poor, she wore simple clothing. During the night she would rise from bed and spend long periods in prayer. She performed all types of charitable acts zealously : she put herself at the service of widows, orphans, the sick, the needy; she generously distributed all the grain from her stocks during a famine; she cared for lepers in one of the hospitals she established; and she provided suitable lodging for the indigent. After six years of marriage, her husband died in the Crusades, and she was grief-stricken. Her husband’s family looked upon her as squandering the royal purse, and mistreated her, finally throwing her out of the palace. The return of her husband’s allies from the Crusades resulted in her being reinstated, since her son was legal heir to the throne. In 1228 Elizabeth joined the Secular Franciscan Order, spending the remaining few years of her life caring for the poor in a hospital which she founded in honor of St. Francis.
