The United States Conference of Catholic
Bishops (USCCB) has called for a “Fortnight for
Freedom,” from June 21, 2014 to July 4, 2014 to
highlight the importance of defending religious
freedom in the United States and around the
world. This special period of prayer, education,
and action begins with the vigil of the Feasts of
St. John Fisher and St. Thomas More and
culminates on Independence Day. This year, the
theme for the Fortnight is Freedom to Serve and
will focus on how religious freedom enables the
Church’s service to the poor and vulnerable in
accord with human dignity and Church teaching.
For more information, go to www.catholicnh.org.
ADORERS NEEDED
We are truly blessed to have times for perpetual Adoration
of Our Lord in our Parish. This time of prayer and
intercession is not only a source of great grace for the
individual, but it is a great source of grace for us as a
parish family, as well. We have many who have made the
commitment to spend an hour each week with our
Eucharistic Lord, but we need more people to fill the
following hours:
Plaistow:
Wednesday
10:30 AM to 11:30 AM
If you can commit to one hour a week in Adoration of our
Lord, please contact Cathy Smith at 603-382-8324 or
email her at [email protected].
RCIA
The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is the process
by which people become members of the Roman Catholic
Church. RCIA is intended to serve:
•
•
•
Those not Baptized who would like to learn more
about the Catholic religion.
Those Baptized in another religion who think they
might like to become Catholic.
Those Baptized Catholic but have not been
raised in the Faith.
If you or someone you know is interested in inquiring
about becoming a member of the Roman Catholic
Church, please call Cathy Smith at 603-382-8324 or
email: [email protected].
ADULT CONFIRMATION
Are you an adult who has been Baptized and received
Eucharist, but has not celebrated the sacrament of
Confirmation? The adult Confirmation process is an
opportunity to complete the Sacraments of Initiation. If
you would like to prepare for Confirmation, or if you have
any questions, contact Cathy Smith at 603-382-8324 or
email her at [email protected].
PARENTS BAPTISM
PREPARATION SESSION
The monthly preparation session for infant Baptism
will be held after the 11:00 AM Liturgy on Sunday,
July 6th in the parish office living room. All parents
planning to celebrate the Sacrament of Baptism are
welcome.
Families wishing to celebrate Baptism in the Church
must be registered (according to Church Canon Law)
and practicing (attending Sunday Mass) for 3 full
months before a Baptism can be scheduled. The use
of the envelope system is always optional; however,
it does guarantee a manner of accountability. For
most families, the Pastor or staff can easily verify
attendance during these three months.
Baptismal sponsors (godparents) are also regulated
by Church Canon Law. Sponsors must be at least
16, fully initiated (having received Baptism, Eucharist,
and Confirmation), and be practicing Catholics living
Christian lives consistent with the Church’s teaching.
Please see Fr. Albert with questions.

HOW TO MAKE A REPORT OF SEXUAL ABUSE
Child sexual abuse is a crime in the State of New
Hampshire and the Church. New Hampshire law requires
that anyone who has reason to suspect that a child is being
or has been abused or neglected must make a report to the
Division for Children, Youth & Families (“DCYF”) of the
State of New Hampshire, 1-800-894-5533. Any person who
suspects or alleges child abuse on the part of a priest,
deacon, employee, or volunteer of a parish, school, or
institution of the diocese of Manchester is also encouraged
to make a report to the Office for Ministerial Conduct, 603669-3100. Church personnel – clergy, paid employees, and
volunteers – have additional reporting requirements if they
believe that Church personnel have sexually abused a child.
You can learn more about these reporting requirements on
the diocesan website at www.catholicnh.org or by
speaking with our Parish Safe Environment Coordinator,

MOST HOLY TRINITY
June 15, 2014
Father, Son, and Spirit, God Is Mercy
By Diane M. Houdek
St. Augustine tells the story of meeting
a small child on the sea shore who was
filling a hole in the sand with buckets of
water from the sea. He told her than it
was impossible, and she looked at him
and said, “And you’re trying to understand the Trinity.”
The challenges faced by the early
Church in understanding the Trinity had
a lot to do with the need to reconcile
the strongly monotheistic (one God)
tradition of Judaism with the tendency
of the pagans to have multiple gods for a
variety of tasks and circumstances.
While we don’t have quite the same
issues as they did, we still have to
SUNDAY READINGS
Exodus 34:4b-6, 8-9
God’s gracious character is revealed to
Moses. God understands the weakness of
the people and forgives their sins.
2 Corinthians 13:11-13
Paul encourages us to rejoice and help
one another. The Father Son and Holy
Spirit are the source of all good in our
lives.
John 3:16-18
God so loved the world that he gave his
only Son. Those who believe in him will
have eternal life.
overcome a mistaken idea that God
the Father is the Old Testament God of
judgment while Jesus is a God of love.
Some of this surely comes from human
experience with patriarchal cultures and
personal experiences of harsh parenting.
It’s not the teaching of our faith.
For a time, as people experiemented
with language in liturgy, prayer and
ritual, the phrase “Creator, Redeemer
and Sanctifier” became popular as a way
to refer to the Trinity. Some perceived
“Father” and “Son” to be rooted in an
offensive patriarchal culture. They chose
to speak about the three persons of the
Trinity in terms of what they did rather
than who they are. But the fact is that no
one person of the Trinity does one task
more than another. The Son created with
the Father; the Father saves through the
Son, the Spirit is the ongoing presence of
Father and Son in the world.
The Gospel writers tell us Jesus used
Father, Son, and Spirit in his own
references to the divine activity he was
accomplishing. Because of that revealed
truth, we always begin and end there in
our understanding of the Trinity.
Naming God has always been a challenge. Perhaps this is why, when confronted with the burning bush, Moses
wanted to know God’s name, and then
was left with the enigmatic “I Am Who
Am.” In both English and Hebrew this
name is a verb, the verb of being.
In our first reading today, Moses on
Sinai has come to know the Lord better
and is still grappling with the question of
the divine identity. Exodus tells us, “The
Lord proclaimed his name and passed by,
crying out, ‘The Lord, the Lord, a merciful and gracious God, slow to anger and
rich in kindness and fidelity.’” So in fact
what God does tells us something about
who God is. And even as far back as the
beginnings of the Hebrew people, what
God did was mercy and grace.
Thus, in the Gospel, we hear that “God
so loved the world that he gave his only
Son, so that everyone who believes in
him might not perish but might have
eternal life.” This is not a God of judgment and punishment.
One of the deepest truths that the
doctrine of the Trinity reveals to us is
that God is in relationship. The union of
Father, Son, and Spirit is a fluid one. The
Trinity is always working, always moving, animating the world with divine life.
This image comes to us from the Gospel of John, which also tells us again and
again that God is love. We know from
our own lives that love is both activity
and mystery. It is beyond words and yet
it can be expressed in words. The great
French novelist Victor Hugo says in Les
Miserables that to love another person is
to see the face of God. Our experience
of love may help us to understand the
overflowing love of the Trinity. Our longing for love may bring us even closer to
that mystery.

s How do you understand the Trinity? Do symbols and images help?

s Imagine the immensity of God’s
love for the entire universe. Then
imagine the intimacy of God’s love
for you. Which is more difficult?
Rising I thank you,
mighty and strong One,
King of Creation,
Giver of rest,

oneness of Godhead,
Trinity blest.

WEEKDAY
READINGS
June 15, 2014
You may remember an eighties trend of rainbow-wigged men dancing in the stands and
holding up signs with the citation John 3:16.
As it happens that trend was just one man,
Rollen Stewart. He became more aggressive
in his efforts to appear on camera and created distractions at events around the globe.
His quest for fame finally led to a string of
events involving terrorist threats, hostages, a
SWAT team, and three life sentences.
Had Mr. Stewart read all the way to John
3:17, his life might have turned out better.
“God did not send the Son in to the world
to condemn the world, but in order that the
world might be saved through him.”
When helping children learn the basics
of the faith, we often rely on simplistic
messages. We do good to “get to heaven;”
we avoid sin so we don’t “make Jesus sad.”
We must all learn a more mature, subtle
faith that acknowledges that there is no
“us” and “them”—if there were, only the
Trinity would be “us,” leaving the rest of us
uncomfortably in the “them” camp. We can
be grateful that God has a more inclusive
mind-set, even while the rest of us are still
learning.

St. Francis often referred to God as the
Trinity and did things in three’s to reflect
the importance of this mystery. Perhaps
the most significant of these comes in
the story of his first follower, Bernard:
Then Francis opened the Gospel book
three times in honor of the Blessed Trinity,
asking God to approve Bernard’s plan with
a three-fold testimony.The book opened
the first time at the words, “If you have a
mind to be perfect, go home and sell all
that belongs to you, and give it to the poor”
(Mt 19:21).The second time they found the
phrase, “Take nothing with you to use on
your journey” (Lk 9:3), and the third time
the words of our Lord caught their eyes, “If
any man has a mind to come my way, let
him renounce self, and take up his cross,
and follow me” (Mt 16:24). “This is our life
and our rule,” said Francis, “and everyone
who comes to join our company must be
prepared to do this. And so, if you have a
mind to be perfect, go home and do as you
have heard.”
The very foundation of the Franciscan
order is trinitarian, and each of the Bible
passages reveals God’s love for the poor,
for simplicity, and for the love represented by Christ’s death on the cross.
This simplifies a mystery we often try to
complicate and spiritualize.
