A legacy of change: New Life Center
celebrates 25 years of service
It takes 25 years to realize the true legacy of a group
of women and a project that started through passion
and determination to change how victims of domestic
violence receive service. Today, thousands of families and
generations are living lives free from violence, but reaching
this point was not easy. The history of New life Center
is a unique story. Despite obstacles in its 25 year history,
New Life Center has been continuously nurtured by the
West Valley community to become a primary provider of
domestic violence services in the state of Arizona. In every
way, New Life Center has fulfilled its mission of “Saving
lives, building futures…empowering women and children
escaping domestic violence.”
New Life Center began as a vision of members of the
Soroptimist International Club of Estrella. In the spring of
1986, members of the Club attended a regional conference
in California where they received a heart changing
presentation about the widespread nature of domestic
violence and the critical need for shelters nationwide.
With this heightened awareness of domestic violence,
the Soroptimist International Club of Estrella committed
to take the lead in establishing an emergency shelter in
western Maricopa County. Through tremendous research,
political and legal challenges, and community involvement,
the Soroptimist Club members, led by their President Nan
Raine, accomplished their mission.
On October 7, 1991 New Life Center officially opened its
doors and welcomed the first residents. In the last 25 years,
lives have been saved and futures transformed. Teens who
sought refuge with their mothers now have families of their
own. That next generation of children represents the true
legacy of New Life Center – a generation that domestic
violence will not touch.

2015... what made the difference?
The first quarter of the year is an opportunity to look back at
what has been accomplished and look forward to the work that
needs to be done in the coming year. 2015 proved to be a year
of change for New Life Center, but we remained true to our
mission and our core service of providing safety and shelter to
victims of domestic violence.
Included in this quarter’s newsletter is our annual report. My hope is that this
gives our supporters a clear picture of the work being done on our shelter campus and throughout the west valley every day. Our annual report demonstrates
in numbers what we know to be true – this work cannot be done without your
support and what you are supporting is life-saving and life-changing work. In
2015, volunteers dedicated a staggering 13,567 hours of service to support New
Life Center. Individual giving accounted for 11% of our total revenue for the
year and 77.4% of expenses went directly to programs and services.
Those programs and services provided 24,221 bed nights of safety to 572
women and children fleeing for their lives. Family advocates led 3,240 hours of
group advocacy for women and children sharing information on the cycle of
domestic violence, parenting skills, budgeting, and job readiness. Children
learned how to handle emotions in a healthy way through pet, art, and music
therapy.
Individual advocacy is the cornerstone of emergency shelter service. More than
2,300 hours of individual advocacy were provided for moms and children helping families set and attain short- and long-term goals toward independence
when they leave shelter. For those victims and survivors in the community that
may not need or be ready for shelter, New Life Center’s Outreach Program
provided support groups and individual advocacy to 290 residents across the
west valley.
Once again, our programs have proven their success. While all of these numbers
show a clear picture of the life-changing work being accomplished at New Life
Center each day, the most important number is the 95% of families that come
through our doors and do not return to the abusive environments from which
they came. That is a number we are proud of, and that is a number you should
be proud of, because it would not be possible without your generosity and
continued support.

Celebrating 25 years
New Life Center was built on the backs of this community.
The dedication and passion of our supporters is what has
sustained this mission for the last 25 years. So, allow me to
take this moment to say thank you for all who have given and
continue to give to make this organization a leading provider
of shelter and services to domestic violence victims in the state of Arizona.
Last year, individual contributions accounted for 11% of our total operating
revenue. We rely on the generosity of our neighbors to continue this work and
we strive to recognize your generosity and our appreciation in meaningful ways.
One way we have developed to recognize our top supporters is our Brighter Day
Society. These supporters pledge to give $1,000 per year for 5 years or more to
ensure the continuation of this mission.
But, what does it mean exactly to be a part of the Brighter Day Society? It means
that you are featured in our newsletter as a top supporter and that you will receive
invitations to special events throughout the year held specifically for Brighter
Day Society members. But, most importantly, it means that you are a critical part
of our mission. It means that when 95% of families leave New Life Center and
do not return to the abusive situations from which they came, you can join us in
celebrating because you make that possible.
New Life Center is celebrating its 25th Anniversary this year. That is a
milestone we would not have reached without the generosity of individuals in
our community. I hope you recognize how much we appreciate your support at

Volunteer Orientation
Volunteer orientation is held the first
Monday of every month at 6 p.m.

meatballs?
In March, volunteers from
Kiwanis Club of Litchfield Park,
Dream City Church of Glendale, and David
Schwake, NLC board member, came
together as part of the RSVP Program to
prepare a delicious spaghetti and meatball
dinner for the residents. The dinner was
served restaurant style and the residents
loved the experience. RSVP (Respectfully
Serving Valuable People) is a volunteer
program, during which time the volunteers
visit with residents of the Center, facilitate
an activity for the children, and provide a
delicious meal that includes a side dish,
drink, and dessert.
RAISE MONEY FOR
New Life Center
BY HAVING H&R BLOCK PREPARE YOUR TAXES
You can now raise money for New Life Center by having H&R Block
prepare your taxes. The H&R Block's Nonprofit Referral Program provides
an opportunity for nonprofit organizations to raise money by referring new
clients to H&R Block for tax preparation services. NLC will earn $20 for every
new client referred for a completed tax preparation service. There no cost for
NLC to participate, or limit to the amount that can be raised for NLC. The
program runs from January 1 through April 18. By having your taxes prepared
at H&R Block you can feel good knowing you helped raise money to support
women and children who are fleeing domestic violence, and at the same time
receive exceptional tax preparation service. The process is easy. Download
the H&R Block Referral Form at http://www.newlifectr.org/wp-content/
uploads/2016/03/NP_2016_Referral_EN.pdf. Take the referral form with you
to your tax preparation appointment. If you are a new client New Life Center
will receive $20.

Free Arts of Arizona bringing art that teaches
agriculture
Free Arts of Arizona is back on
campus. This time, Art Instructor,
Keith Johnson will be introducing the
youth to art projects that teach the
importance of horticulture. The lesson
plans are designed to stimulate both
the creative side and logical side of the
brain. Often referred to as the right and
left side of the brain. In past lesson
plans the children were given gourds to
create beaded musical instruments.
This season the youth will grow their
own gourds. Each youth will receive
gourd seeds to plant, and a designated
area on campus to cultivate their
garden. They will also make leather
cowrie bracelets. The activities are
designed to build group cohesiveness,
introduce horticulture, and demonstrate
how natural elements from the earth
can bring beauty to the world in which
we live.
Putting a flavorful twist on
donated items
Because of our faithful donors,
NLC receives a generous amount of
donated food items. Perishable and
non-perishable food donations help
keep the pantry stocked with delicious
foods that range from frozen pancakes,
spaghetti sauces and fresh fruits, to tasty
desserts, condiments and seasonings. To
maximize the use of the donated foods,
NLC volunteer, culinary artist, Jeff
Hinton, will help design a food guide
to incorporate preparing the donated
food items in a creative and delicious
way. The food guide will allow NLC
to provide fun foodies while following
government mandated nutritional food
guides.
NLC reaching out to teens about domestic violence
spreading the message...Love is not abuse
In February, during National Teen
Dating Violence Awareness and
Prevention Month, NLC reached
out to the community with support
materials and resources to shed
light on unhealthy teen dating
relationships. Teen dating violence
is a serious violation that can affect a
young person's safety, development,
and sense of comfort. Perpetrated by a
current or past intimate partner, dating
violence takes many forms, including
physical, sexual, or emotional abuse,
and can occur in person or through
electronic communication and social
media. Violent dating relationships
can lead to depression, anxiety, drug
and alcohol use, and thoughts of
suicide.
Victims may continue to experience
detrimental effects throughout their
lives. In recent studies, more teens
have reported being physically hurt on
purpose, by a boyfriend or girlfriend.
Unhealthy relationships can start early
and last a lifetime. Teens often think
some behaviors, like teasing and name
calling, are a "normal" part of a relationship. However, these behaviors can
become abusive and develop into more
serious forms of violence. The month of
February provided a national and collective measure to expose the situation,
and provide support to teens, parents,
and the community at large, about the
importance of developing healthy, respectful relationships. Dating violence
can happen to any teen in a romantic,
dating, or sexual relationship, anytime,
anywhere. But it doesn't have to happen at all. NLC outreach team shared
information at local high schools, colleges, and at community events. To

BigSpring
Clean
The Big Spring Clean: A time to
refresh and renew
Saturday, April 9, volunteers will come
together for New Life Center Big Spring
Clean − an annual gathering where volunteers
step out of their normal volunteer routine and
come together to complete projects around
the campus. Volunteers will trim trees, spruce
up the garden, paint, and assemble office
furniture. Giving the entire campus a clean
sweep. At the end of the day the volunteers
will be treated to a delicious appreciation
luncheon. For more information, or to

Volunteers play a vital role in
service delivery at NLC
Volunteering with New Life Center helps to
make a difference in the lives of thousands
of women and children who are fleeing
domestic violence. The volunteers have an
enormous impact on their health and safety.
Volunteers benefit knowing they have
helped to provide a mother, and her children
a safe escape from a violent environment.
Volunteers at NLC carry out several duties.
Some of these duties include:

• Decorating the Casitas
• Preparing special activities for the youth
• Organizing community outreach events

• Teaching employment skills

Just for the moms...A special treat
on Mother's Day!
NLC is getting ready for Mother's
Day. A special dinner, prepared by
volunteers, will be presented to our
resident women Sunday, May 8.
The children are busy creating cards
and special gifts to present to their
moms at the dinner. The mothers will
also receive a gift pass to shop the
Brighter Day Boutique for an outfit
and accessories to wear to the special
occassion. Each mom will be seated
at her own table, surrounded by her children, and the gifts
they created for her. Food service will be family style. NLC is
currently accepting table cloth donations for the event.
Rotary Club tribute to Dottie Allen
In March, members of the Rotary Club came together on the
campus of NLC to honor Dottie Allen, a dedicated Rotary
Club member and outstanding supporter of New Life Center
who passed in 2014. Ms. Allen was one of the Centers first
community advocates. She has committed countless volunteer
hours to NLC since the opening of its doors in 1991. In
memory of Dottie Allen, the club members held a dedication
ceremony, and a special engraved plaque was hung on one
of their adopted casitas, officially naming the room "The
Dottie Allen Casita". They worked hard all day to beautify
all three of their adopted casitas, providing fresh paint, wall
decorations, new linens,

Saluting our Exceptional Community Partners...going the extra mile!
The Exceptional Community Partner Program is New
Life Center’s way of showing our appreciation for those
organizations and foundations in our community who
have chosen to take a stand against domestic violence and
show their support for the mission of New Life Center. The
organizations and foundations have become a part of the
program by financially supporting the Center with a financial
gift of at least $2,500. These funds are used to directly support
the mission of New Life Center and will support the women
and children who are escaping domestic violence.
While we know organizations and foundations do not
support our mission simply for recognition, out of our sincere
appreciation we would like to say thank you to our ECP
supporters. Thank you for going the extra mile to make the
mission of NLC possible. Featured below are the companies

Spring into bargains at Hope's Closet...new items arrive
everyday!
This is the time of the year when lots
of bargains spring up at Hope's Closet.
April and May months are a great time to
find bundles of great treasures at Hope's
Closet. Donations increase at this time of
the year because our donors are clearing
out their homes causing truckloads of
used furniture and household items to be
donated everyday.
Spring cleaning often brings a larger
variety of clothing deals, including
athletic apparel and shoes. Spring is also
an awesome time to volunteer at Hope’s
Closet Thrift Store. Volunteering at
Hope’s Closet in the spring is fun, and
a great way to build skills, or enhance
the skills you have while supporting the
women and children who are escaping
