Dear Collector
As always, I have scoured the country and had my scouts out to enable me to place
before you the very best of what is on the market at the moment. As a result you will
find items of real rarity and quality all fresh to the market. My son, Tarquin, has even
started to show an interest and has, when he has seen something in a shop, rung me from
Canterbury, London and even Ypres!
I don’t know about you but when I go out to shops, centres and Antiques fairs I am
seeing much less crested china for sale than in years gone by and what I do see is
usually poor quality or more money than I would charge. Last weekend I drove to two
fairs, Elsecar near Barnsley and Lincoln, and bought less than ten items. Not many, but
some, dealers at fairs are less than honest and or completely inept. When the items were
unwrapped one mug had a chip that I had missed even though the dealer assured me it
was fine, and another piece was broken, not due to my mishandling but because the
dealer had broken it while packing it. I am more cross with myself because after thirty
five years dealing I still miss the odd chip or crack only to see it easily when I unwrap
back at base, as for the broken piece, I should have watched what that dealer was doing.
That ineptitude in my experience, is rife in many antiques centres country wide, you
pay out good money for what is a fragile old item, (I am talking about a piece of china
here, not myself!), and the person taking the money makes a big production of tearing a
piece of tissue or bubble wrap from a larger piece until it is little larger than the size of a
postage stamp then painstakingly sellotapes it and hands it over seemingly expecting an
expression of gratitude for their prowess! You would be hard pushed to get it back to
your car in one piece. What I would really like to do is take them by the throat and tell
them in no uncertain terms my true opinions about their dithering and utter stupidity.
Paper and Bubble wrap is not desperately expensive and is surely a requirement of any
outlet selling glass and china, yet most antiques centres, shops and dealers at fairs will
scrabble about for little scraps of scruffy paper, you dare to ask for a bit more packing
and you will suffer a lecture about waste, expense, or at best be given a frosty and
withering stare! I long ago gave up asking and always have a box and plenty of paper in
the boot and generally rewrap everything when I get it to the car, which is why I was
particularly annoyed about the piece from Lincoln. DT
