Word from Big SIR
This month we were treated to a wonderful presentation by Mike Boulland, a docent with the Almaden Quick Silver Mines.
Mike told us about a settlement that grew in a rocky, wooded canyon south of San Jose near the oldest and richest quicksilver
(mercury) mine in California, which became known as New Almaden. Discovered in 1845, its quicksilver payload was not only
crucial for gold and silver processing, but for munitions production as well. The mines are now closed, but the mansion, known
as Casa Grande, still stands and is open to visitors. Mike’s presentation was one of our more interesting, and, in fact on Monday July 13th you all have an opportunity to visit this wonderful place. If you haven’t signed up yet, I strongly recommend you do
so. The cost for the tour is $15, and it is suggested that you bring a lunch, as there is no place to purchase one. Please contact
Bud Burkett or Rajeev Singh for all the details.
Our July luncheon meeting will feature Houssein Ashkotrad, Manager, of the Recycled Water & Desalination for the Santa
Clara Valley Water District. He will talk on Santa Clara County’s integrated water resources & potential for a desalination plant
in our area. Considering California’s current drought situation, this promises to be a very timely and interesting presentation.
One last thought, on August 24th, we are having the SIR’s golf tournament here at the Villages. It would be great if we could
have a strong turn out from our branch for this event. I know Branch 114 will also be working on their members to support this
tournament. There will be more information to come, but please mark this on your calendars and let’s have a strong showing.

SIR 38 Luncheon in The Villages Clubhouse, Tuesday, July 21, 2015 presents:
Hossein Ashkotrad, Manager of the Recycled Water Unit at Santa Clara Water District
Speaking on
“Integrated Water Resources … Where we Stand on Water Conservation”.
Hossein has been at the District for almost 15 years, and
during these years he has beenresponsible for recycled
water, water conservation and water supply planning.
Hossein earned his Ph.D. in Soil and Water Science from
the University of California, Davis, and has a M.S. in Irrigation System Design, and a B.S. in Agricultural Engineering. He has published a scientific book and several technical papers on water management. Hossein has the
background to answer all our detailed questions about
water conservation. He appreciates the importance of
water for our region and has an understanding of the
modern history of the growth of Santa Clara Valley and
the role water has contributed in response to that
growth.
Our area is known in the last century as the Valley of
Hearts Delights due to the abundance of orchards and
farming throughout the valley. The valley was severely
challenged in the 1920’s due to the multiyear drought of
the time and land surface subsidence caused by over
pumping.
What better time to find out what SCWD is doing, planning to do, and how it will affect The Villagers / SIR.
Join us to hear (as Paul Harvey, famous Radio Broadcaster once said) …... “The rest of the story!”

Jim Krenek and his
wife Madeline moved
to Village Olivas about 4
months ago from the
"Redwoods country" up
in Sea Ranch and are
busy meeting new neighbors and friends
on Grape Wagon Circle. Jim retired after a
long career with Peterson Publishing Company where he "met deadlines every day
as Vice President of Manufacturing. You
may be familiar with some of his magazines such as: Hot Rod, Motor Trend, Guns
& Ammo, etc. along with magazines on
Travel, Education and hundreds of other
speciality products. Talk to Jim if you want
to learn something about anything!!! He
has a magazine about it.
Jim was born and reared in the Chicago
area and still roots for the Bears
and "Cubbies." He earned his Bachelor
degree from Rochester Institute of Technology, (RIT), where he majored in Graphic Arts. Like many of us, he was drafted
and served in the US Army, and was stationed at Ft. Leonard Wood in Missouri. He was trained and served as a Engineering Specialist in land mine removal--and obviously---very successful!!!!
Madeline is a retired nurse and they have
3 children and 9 grandkids. Of course
their dog,"Rolo" is the boss in the house.
He is a "Havanese". a popular breed from
Cuba.
Take a moment & say hello to Jim at our

Confused about how to use
SIR - SIR, Inc - SIR’s - Sir - Sirs - Sir’s -or Sirs’
...many of us are and here are some tips.
SIR stands for Sons In Retirement.
if you want to use the corporate title,
use SIR, Inc. or Sons In Retirement, Inc.
Common Mistakes:
SIR is never plural—never write or say SIRS
SIR is always capitalized
There are no periods between letters.
The possessive of SIR is SIR’s
Examples:
John is a member of SIR– not SIRS
SIR’S annual meeting is held in August - possessive
Sir John Jones is a member of SIR - singular
Many Sirs attended a SIR luncheon—Plural
