If you know of a fellow SIR who is ill, has passed away, or whose wife is ill, or has passed away; please let our Sunshine Chairman, Gary Hill by calling or emailing, Gary Hill, at 408-274-8086 or (email: [email protected]). IF YOU CANNOT ATTEND A MEETING, CALL Chet Purcell 238-6488 or Jim McLeod 270-7659 or Email [email protected] Word from Big SIR This month we were treated to a wonderful presentation by Mike Boulland, a docent with the Almaden Quick Silver Mines. Mike told us about a settlement that grew in a rocky, wooded canyon south of San Jose near the oldest and richest quicksilver (mercury) mine in California, which became known as New Almaden. Discovered in 1845, its quicksilver payload was not only crucial for gold and silver processing, but for munitions production as well. The mines are now closed, but the mansion, known as Casa Grande, still stands and is open to visitors. Mike’s presentation was one of our more interesting, and, in fact on Monday July 13th you all have an opportunity to visit this wonderful place. If you haven’t signed up yet, I strongly recommend you do so. The cost for the tour is $15, and it is suggested that you bring a lunch, as there is no place to purchase one. Please contact Bud Burkett or Rajeev Singh for all the details. Our July luncheon meeting will feature Houssein Ashkotrad, Manager, of the Recycled Water & Desalination for the Santa Clara Valley Water District. He will talk on Santa Clara County’s integrated water resources & potential for a desalination plant in our area. Considering California’s current drought situation, this promises to be a very timely and interesting presentation. One last thought, on August 24th, we are having the SIR’s golf tournament here at the Villages. It would be great if we could have a strong turn out from our branch for this event. I know Branch 114 will also be working on their members to support this tournament. There will be more information to come, but please mark this on your calendars and let’s have a strong showing. Hossein has been at the District for almost 15 years, and during these years he has beenresponsible for recycled water, water conservation and water supply planning. Hossein earned his Ph.D. in Soil and Water Science from the University of California, Davis, and has a M.S. in Irrigation System Design, and a B.S. in Agricultural Engineering. He appreciates the importance of water for our region and has an understanding of the modern history of the growth of Santa Clara Valley and the role water has contributed in response to that growth. Our area is known in the last century as the Valley of Hearts Delights due to the abundance of orchards and farming throughout the valley. The valley was severely challenged in the 1920’s due to the multiyear drought of the time and land surface subsidence caused by over pumping.
