Dan’s Thoughts
Big Sir Dan Capodanno
Sorry I missed
the last meeting
but I was on vacation in Monterey. What a
great place to
escape to, and
only a couple of hours away.
But enough about my life. I am
sure the luncheon went well and
the speaker was interesting. Most
important, however, is the life of
the Branch. I want to thank all the
members who have expressed an
interest in being a part of the
BEC. Some of the current BEC
have been on-board for quite a
while and need a rest. Also, new
people always bring new ideas. It
is healthy.
As most of you know, I plan to
step down as Big Sir after my
term ends on December 31,
2016. The Branch needs someone to be in charge. It is not a lot
of work, especially when you
have a hard-working BEC, as we
do. Believe me, the job is rewarding but I want to do a lot of traveling in the coming months which
would mean I would be absent for
a number of luncheons. Also, a
new Big Sir would be healthy for
our Branch-new blood-new ideas.

August Meeting Entertainment
Tommy and The Backup Boys
This month, we’re in for a special treat, as Tommy and The
Backup Boys return to entertain
us. The combo, consisting of our
very own Branch 91 members,
will perform a variety of old standards familiar to us all.
They will delight us with classic
favorites such as “Bill Bailey”,
“You’re a Grand Old Flag”, “Just
Because”, “Margie”, “When
You’re Smiling” and other sensational songs.
The quartet consists of the mellifluous voice of Tom Wehner,
Dan Capodanno and his awesome accordion, the brilliant
August, 2015
banjo playing of John Cooney
and Steve LaRosa and his booming bass.
Here’s a little about the players:
Tom says, “I began singing duets with my mother, Marie
Wehner, over the dinner dishes
and I’ve enjoyed singing ever
since.” More recently, Tom played
Jimmy Durante in a Millbrae Seniors’ Music Appreciation Show.
Dan started playing the accordion at age six in Philadelphia, PA
and never stopped. He had been
part of a quartet back East but

Tommy and The Backup Boys

continued from page 1
Please give some thought
to running for Big Sir or
Little Sir next year. If you
have questions, please ask
Little Sir Bob Sullivan or
me.
The picnic is just a few
short weeks away. Remember to get your reservation in now. It will be a
great event with good food,
good fun and good people.
Branch 4 will be joining us.
I will be attending the
annual Corporate meeting
quit playing as part of a
group upon his arrival in
California in 1974. Says
Dan, “I just like playing solo
at weddings and house parties where I can adlib as I go
along. I enjoy all the ‘old
tunes’, better known as ‘sing
-a-long’ songs. Playing with
Tommy and The Back Up
Boys is a return to organized
music for me.”
John is very much a latecomer to music and was influenced to do so by his wife,
Marilyn. She is a cabaret
singer and has performed
several times for us at our
luncheons. John began playing the piano in 2002 at age
61 and now plays every day.
John says, “In 2006, after
my retirement from law practice, I began banjo lessons
and eventually joined the
San Francisco Banjo Band,
of SIR on August 3. The
meeting includes election
of State officers and a report of the various programs we have in SIR. Let
me know of any concerns
you may have so I can discuss them at the meeting.
Remember to recruit a
member or get one to come
back to our Branch. Be
sure to attend the next
luncheon, when Tommy
and The Back-up Boys
will perform.

headed by my teacher, Bill
Portman.” The SFBB has
also performed for our
Branch.
Steve is a bassist and
songwriter who began performing in San Francisco in
1965, during the burgeoning
mid-60’s music scene. He
worked in blues and rhythm
& blues bands, performing in
clubs and concerts up until
about 10 years ago. “Prior to
Tommy and The Backup
Boys, I had never played this
genre of music”, says Steve.
“So, it’s fun for me to play
these songs and I think everyone is going to really enjoy
it!”
This should be a fun-filled
time and all are invited and
urged to sing along with the
group as they play old favorites...classics from a bygone
era.
PLEASE contact Jack Cardon at (650)952-8331 or at
[email protected] as soon as you know you won't be
