PLAY TRAILER BOOK TICKETS SET REMINDER DILWALE Some Love Stories Never End… Atmos The buzz is that Dilwale marks an interesting departure from Rohit Shetty’s signature style. Romance and drama dominate, bookended by action and comedy. Adding heft to the emotional fabric are veterains Vinod Khanna and Kabir Bedi. The romance between Varun Dhawan and Kriti Sanon is tinged with tenderness, too. Just when we thought we had lost SRK to the pretty young damsels - Anushka, Katrina and Deepika - Rohit Shetty has brought Bollywood’s golden coupleback with Dilwale. Promising a reprisal of their much loved chemistry, Dilwale plays on a title that has come to define the zenith of SRK and Kajol’s onscreen romance. the wraps, the film as the trailer suggests looks like a thorough going Rohit Shetty vehicle, with his trademark flying cars and falling goons. The film also stars Varun Dhawan as Khan’s younger brother with Kriti Sanon playing his love interest. Music The music for Dilwale is composed by Pritam while lyrics are penned by Amitabh Bhattacharya. The film includes a romantic song between Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, titled “Gerua.” Shot in Iceland, the song was launched at Maratha Mandir, the same location where DDLJ completed 20 years. DID YOU KNOW? Instead of Rohit Shetty’s typical “flying cars,” Dilwale will show Shah Rukh Khan perform some deathdefying water stunts in Mauritius. While the plot details have been kept tightly under PVR MOVIES FIRST PAGE 4 Reasons to Watch Rohit Shetty is the maestro of mega-entertainers. And when he puts Bollywood’s best-loved pair in the lead, you are guaranteed the perfect year-end movie. THE COLLECTION Movies that have featured SRK and Kajol have always done well at the box office since they were first paired together in Abbas-Mustan’s Baazigar. Here’s a glance at the hit pair’s earliercollaborations. ll these years you have loved us in DDLJ… we hope you love us even more in Dilwale. - Shah Rukh Khan Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995) Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998) DILWALE RELEASE 18 DEC Genre: Action, Comedy, Musical Language: Hindi Director: Rohit Shetty Cast: Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Varun Dhawan, Kriti Sanon Studio: Red Chillies Entertainment Pic Courtesy: Red Chillies Entertainment PVR MOVIES FIRST My Name is Khan (2010) PAGE 5 PLAY TRAILER PVR MOVIES FIRST BOOK TICKETS PAGE 6 star wars Director: J.J. Abrams Star Cast: Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher Genre: Action, Adventure, Fantasy Duration: 135 minutes Release Date: December 25 Studio: Lucasfilm Ltd, Walt Disney Pictures In 2005 it looked like the Star Wars saga was officially over. Lucasfilm and Twentieth Century Fox released Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, which completed the prequels trilogy and tied the story back to the first film in the series. It was done, finished, kaput, and ended. But then along came Disney. In October 2012 the studio brokered a $4.05 billion deal to buy Lucasfilm, and with the deal came the announcement that they would be starting production on a whole new trilogy of Star Wars films that would keep the epic story going for years and years to come. Naturally, fanboys started to foam at the mouth with anticipation. What would the new movies be about? Would they bring back classic characters or merely focus on new ones? Would there be new stories set outside of the trilogy? MOVIE OF THE MONTH peace. The First Order has risen from the ashes of the Empire; the Rebellion has become the X-Wingcentric Resistance; and somewhere in the middle are the mysterious Knights of Ren. Many of the heroes of before, Leia Organa, Han Solo, Chewbacca, R2-D2 and C-3PO are all still active and fighting in the Resistance against this group. read somethin g that was really remarkable, reall y well writte n with some ver y intrig ui ng developments. I was very happy. - Har rison Ford The Story: The film is set 30 years after Return of the Jedi, and the galaxy far, far away is still not at PVR MOVIES FIRST PAGE 7 They are joined in the fight by new heroes: • Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac): “The best frickin’ pilot in the galaxy,” is Isaac’s own description of Resistance X-Wing flyboy Poe. His story is set in motion when he’s given a mission by “a certain princess”, which we’re going to assume means Leia. On that quest he encounters Finn, and, again according to Isaac, their fates are forever intertwined”. • Finn (John Boyega): A former First Order Stormtrooper who has taken up the lightsaber that once belonged to Anakin Skywalker and later Luke Skywalker. “When we find Finn, he’s in incredible danger,” says Boyega, “and the way he reacts to this danger changes his life, and launches him into the Star Wars universe in a very unique way.” • Rey (Daisy Ridley): Rey is a scavenger on the junkyard planet Jakku. Newcomer Ridley says “she’s completely self-sufficient and does everything for herself, until she meets another character and the adventure begins.” They are opposed by powerful new forces, including • Kylo Ren (Adam Driver): A fearsome and mysterious dark side user wielding a red lightsaber of unusual design. Ren is a user of the Dark Side and something of a Darth Vader obsessive, styling himself after the 30-years-dead Sith Lord, down to his almost-familiar mask. • Supreme Leader Snoke (Andy Serkins): A powerful figure on the Dark Side of The Force.”He is severely damaged. Although he’s a powerful leader, he comes across as vulnerable. Very scarred and disfigured,”says Andy Serkins. • Captain Phasma (Gwendoline Christie): A Chrome Trooper (shiny Stormtrooper with a cape) for the First Order. The First Order, while equipped with Stormtroopers, TIE Fighters, Star Destroyers and similar Imperial accoutrements, aren’t necessarily the same Empire that was unseated at the end of Jedi. PVR MOVIES FIRST PAGE 8 TRIVIA 01 02 Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (2015) has a budget of 200 million dollars: the highest for a Star Wars film so far. The trailer notched up more than 20 million YouTube views within 24 hours of release. The pre-sales movie ticket sites in the US reportedly crashed after starting ticket sales. 03 Directors discussed to helm the film included Michael Vaughn, Steven Spielberg, Christopher Nolan, Ben Affleck and James Cameron; before J.J. Abrams was selected. He now becomes the first director to direct a Mission Impossible, Star Trek (2009) film and a Star Wars film. 04 The original composer for all six Star Wars films, John Williams, returns with this 7th one. 05 George Lucas originally planned the Star Wars saga to be nine films, with Episode 9 being the final chapter in the series. 06 When Harrison Ford and Chewbacca set foot on the Millennium Falcon, every one of the 200 people on set went quiet, stunned by the iconic presence of Ford and Chewbacca back on Han Solo’s ship. 07 Real locations and miniature models were preferred over green-screens and computergenerated imagery where possible, to make the film aesthetically similar to the original Star Wars trilogy. TECHNICAL SPECS Eschewing the digital format of George Lucas’ prequels, Abrams and his cinematographer Dan Mindel opted to shoot The Force Awakens on 35mm film, the better to channel the aesthetic of the original trilogy. Abrams has also been a passionate advocate of practical effects where possible, so there’s been plenty of scale model work and engineering wizardry. The movie’s casting director Shruti Mahajan reveals how she picked the key players. Bajirao Mastani marks your third association with Sanjay Leela Bhansali after Goliyon ki Raas leela Ram-Leela and Mary Kom. How was this project different from the rest? While Sanjay Leela Bhansali mounts every film on a lavish scale, this has been his dream project. He has carried it inside him for so long that each character was etched clearly in his mind and he did not want to compromise on the scale, look, feel and local flavours at any point. The setting was regal Marathi, so the entire complexion was different from anything he has done before. Sanjay Leela Bhansali is known to be particular about minute details. Absolutely. This is one director for whom the acting, look, nuances…everything has to be just perfect, even at the audition stage. But having worked with him for quite a while now, I have a better understanding of what he wants. How long did the auditions last and roughly how many aspirants PVR MOVIES FIRST GUEST INTERVIEW did you audition? Too many to remember! With Mr. Bhansali, the numbers usually don’t matter, it’s about the right fit. His instructions are very simple and clear, “Don’t give me options, just show me the best one you’ve got. It took us nearly 4-5 months to find the people who would fit the bill. Besides the three leads, which actors should we watch out for in Bajirao Mastani? Tanvi Azmi for sure. She had the fire in her to go totally unconventional for her role, and you are going to see her as never before. Milind Soman, with his classic Marathi good looks, has been missed on the big screen for a long time. He’s back with Bajirao Mastani! Mahesh Manjrekar will be seen in an interesting character role, too. One particular character that was challenging to cast? Ah yes! The director wanted a very specific look for the role of Ranveer Singh’s brother. The actor had to be Marathi with a regal bearing and serious acting talent. My team watched a lot of Marathi theater and scouted the extensive Marathi actors’ network, which I have to say is very cooperative. After a prolonged search, we finalised Vaibhav Tatwawadi, who fitted the role like a glove. PAGE 18 THE LIFE OF A LEGEND: Martin Scorsese PVR MOVIES FIRST ARCHITECTS OF CINEMA PAGE 19 MARTIN SCORSESE One of Hollywood’s most renowned directors, Martin Scorsese is a living legend in the truest sense. His gritty, hard-hitting films virtually defined the state of modern American cinema during the 1970s and ‘80s. Early Life: Ironically, it was an illness that brought him closer to the world of cinema! Growing up in the Little Italy neighborhood of Manhattan, Scorsese was a sickly child. Afflicted by severe asthma, he could not play sports like other children, so he would either sit at home watching television or go to the local movie theater. That’s where his fascination for the silver screen took root. By the time he was 8 years old, Scorsese was already drawing his own storyboards, often complete with the line, “Directed and Produced by Martin Scorsese.” His was never a rags-to-riches story, peppered with struggles. Scorsese’s parents, Charles and Catherine, both worked part-time as actors. As a youngster, he made a 10-minute comedy film, which won him a $500 scholarship to New York University, and his destiny was decided. PVR MOVIES FIRST ARCHITECTS OF CINEMA His Films: After graduation, Scorsese worked as an instructor in the film department at NYU. One of his students was the future iconic director Oliver Stone. In 1968, he made his first feature-length film, Who’s That Knocking at My Door? But it wasn’t until he released Taxi Driver nearly 10 years later that he shot to fame for his raw storytelling. Scorsese’s forged a long association with Robert de Niro: Mean Streets, Goodfellas, Cape Fear, Casino-together, they made magic, film after edgy film. After watching Leonardo de Caprio in Titanic, de Niro himself recommended the young star to Scorsese, DID YOU KNOW? Before he became a director, Scorsese worked as a film editor on several Hollywood movies, and earned himself the nickname “The Butcher” for his ruthless cuts! PAGE 20 who cast him in Gangs of New York. The Aviator followed, cementing Leo’s position as Scorsese’s new muse. Still Going Strong: In his 70s, Scorsese remains as dynamic as ever! There’s a Frank Sinatra biopic in the works, and an adaptation of Shūsaku Endō’s 1966 novel, Silence. He is also the executive producer for HBO’s Boardwalk Empire. inema is a matter of what’s in the frame and what’s out. The Director at the Oscars: “You don’t make pictures for Oscars,” says Scorsese whose luck at the Oscars has been puzzlingly chequered. Take a glance: • 1981: Scorsese’s film Raging Bull is nominated for eight Oscars. It wins only two awards • 1991: Goodfellas is nominated for six Oscars and wins only one. • 2003: The Gangs of New York is nominated for 10 Oscars, but does not win any. • 2005: The Aviator is nominated for 11 Oscars and wins five, but not for him as director. • 2007: Scorsese’s film The Departed is nominated for five Oscars and wins four. Scorsese wins his first Oscar as Best Director for the film. PVR MOVIES FIRST PAGE 21 HISTORY PVR MOVIES FIRST THIS MONTH 41 YEARS AGO PAGE 22 HISTORY The Godfather II is beyond iconic. It is a cultural bedrock. Not our words: they come from legendary critic Roger Ebert. And he is not alone. Many critics believe the sequel is superior to the original film. Released in 1974, The Godfather II continues the saga of the Corleone family, extending over a period of 60 years and three generations. A grand epic studying the nature of power, it is wrapped in masterful production design and set to haunting score by the inimitable Nino Rota. The Plot: After Vito’s death, young Michael Corleone (Robert de Niro) is influenced by ageing Florida boss Hyman Roth. Michael is persuaded to test family loyalties by expanding his empire into 3 MORE Cuba: together they will typify the corruption that brought Fidel Castro into being. Wow Factor: The Godfather II is more ambitious, more elegiac, and delves deeper into the soil of Italian-American myth than the original. It also has one of the greatest single final scene in Hollywood history, a real coup de cinéma. Did You Know: The Godfather, Part II was the first sequel in Academy history to win a Best Picture Oscar.
