Currently eleven companies offer Creative &
Digital Media apprenticeships to young people
through the organisation DV8 Sussex. DV8
apprentices spend one day a week learning
skills and knowledge, and four days a week
placed with an employer putting it into practice.
As I found on a recent visit to DV8’s main office
in Brighton city centre, they can also get extra support with
other essential skills like literacy, numeracy and IT.

Training Young People
I was really impressed with the
range of training projects in
creative and media industries DV8
offer for young people. They also
offer advice and support to the
many small creative and digital
businesses in the city considering
taking on an apprentice.
Dv8 also runs a programme for
budding music gurus, the Music
Industry Mentor Programme.
Those on the programme are
matched up to an industry
professional who mentors and
supports them for a period of six
months. The number of mentors is
expanding all the time, with eight
new experts soon to be ready to
take on young people.
In addition to training and
apprenticeships, DV8 runs
4
what’sonjune13
events such as the free Creative
Careers Event on the 30th May.
The afternoon was part of the
programme for B-Fest, the
Brighton Youth Arts Festival
Part. At the event 14-25 year
olds looking to get started in the
creative and digital sectors were
able to hear from professionals
ranging from concert promoters
to digital media specialists about
their careers.
Dv8 offers invaluable opportunities
to young people interested in
our burgeoning local creative
and media sectors - benefitting
young people, our international
reputation for excellence in this
area, and the city’s local economy.
For more information about DV8,

This time of year brings out the best in
Brighton and Hove, and gives us the chance
to get outside. In fact there is so much on
in the next few months that you’d best get
out your planner and start booking dates
now! Whatever your cultural poison there is
something for you, Shakespeare, sandwiches by the sea or
even a swig of scrumpy. Enjoy it while it lasts!

Food & Drink Festival
Wed 17th - Sat 20th July,
Theatre Royal
Straight from Shakespeare’s Globe
theatre, the story follows the life of
the young king and the widening
cracks between the houses of
Lancaster and York. Only a victory
against the French can restore the
Kingdom’s honour. These three plays
are stand alone, but to be performed
by one cast, under one roof on one
day? Sublime. atgtickets.com
Thurs 5th - Sun 15th Sept,
Various Locations
This is the biggest foodies’ festival
in the south of England, and an
absolute must visit for anyone
who considers themself a culinary
junky. A veritable smorgasbord of
events will be served across the city
including the Big Sussex fruit and veg
market, an outdoor beer and cider
festival and a punk wine tasting!

Cycle Ride
The Levellers
Fri 19th July, Brighton Dome
Sun 8th Sept Madeira Drive
Fancy a challenge this summer? No
I don’t mean trying to make that
beer can tower reach the ceiling! Join
thousands on the A23 and brave the
fearsome Ditching Beacon, that’s after
the 50 odd miles from London
of course. The ride has raised over
£40 million for charities like the
British Heart Foundation over the last
33 years. londonbrightoncycle.co.uk
This is the final stop on the UK leg of
their tour. Do I need to remind anyone
that the Levellers are from Brighton?
Still putting out singles nearly
25 years after their first, this tour
comes on the back of their album,
Static on the Airwaves, released last
year. Get your tickets for this now; it

Nothing provokes a belly-laugh from
me like a good improv show, and
one featuring Have I Got News For

good to miss. He brings with him a
seasoned team of comedy veterans,

People’s Day 2013
It’s a mad old month June particularly if it’s hot
and sunny. We’re recovering from the delightful
madness of The Great Escape and Brighton
Festival but the Fringe still beckons us in for the
first couple of days of the month before bowing
out for another year. What to offer you?
A broad swathe of delights meandering through our streets
and venues is my answer. Also don’t forget Fathers’ Day!
Sat 15th, Brighton City Centre
This city-wide event aimed at
“bringing the city’s communities
together” is set to be as huge and
vibrant as last year’s celebration.
With music performances, food
stalls, a country fayre and 10 ‘zones’
with activities for everyone from
toddlers and kids to the seniors,
there is no excuse to not come down
and remind yourself why this city
is so great! 11am-5pm.

After Earth
We recently lost a true pioneer, icon and
genius of special effects in the form of Ray
Harryhausen. His astounding achievements
in stop motion animation have inspired
countless generations from his work on
‘Mighty Joe Young’ in 1949 through to his
last film ‘Clash Of The Titans’ (1981). His
wonderful body of work still continues to dazzle, even in
the digital age and we will never see his like again.
5th, In Cinemas
Will and Jayden Smith star as father
and son space explorers who crash
land on our planet a thousand years
after humanity’s escape. It seems
that director M. Night Shyamalan has
finally given up trying to shock us in
the last reel as the trailer gives the
game away but it’s quite possibly a
double bluff and there’s more here
than initially meets the eye.
Martin Lampitt: [email protected]
The Company You Keep
7th, In Cinemas
Civil rights lawyer and single
father, Jim Grant (Robert
Redford), finds that his life in
the sleepy suburbs of Albany,
New York is turned upside
down when a local newspaper
reporter (Shia LeBeouf) exposes
his true identity as one of the
FBI’s most wanted. As a result
he is forced to go on the run
after thirty years in hiding.
Redford directs as well as stars
in this tale of how ideals and
priorities change with age and
has assembled a top notch
cast that’s worth the price
of admission alone. Susan
Sarandon, Nick Nolte, Stanley
Tucci, Julie Christie and Brendan
Gleason all turn in excellent
performances but the film never
seems to be more than the sum
of its parts. Redford proves why
he still deserves his iconic status
as an actor but what could have
been ‘The Fugitive’ instead
becomes ‘All the Presidents
Men’ without the intrigue. The
film moves at such a sedate
pace that each revelation falls by
the wayside and I found myself
not particularly caring about
anyone’s fate by the end. I was
particularly looking forward
to this film but, once you strip
away the great performances
from some living legends, found
all that you are left with is an
overlong thriller that is not
particularly thrilling, which is a
great shame.

The Elephant Man:
A Special Event
9th, Dukes at Komedia
David Lynch’s 1980 masterpiece,
starring John Hurt and Anthony Hopkins,
is one of the most moving stories ever
committed to celluloid and today it gets
a rare big screen outing. Alongside the
film there are on-stage interviews with
renowned make up artist Christopher
Tucker and Simon Treves, the greatgreat nephew of the man who looked
after the real John Merrick.
Man of Steel
14th, In Cinemas
After the nostalgia fest of ‘Superman
Returns’, director Zack (‘Watchmen’)
Snyder has decided to approach this
as if this is the Kryptonian’s cinematic
debut. Henry (‘The Tudors’) Cavill dons
the tights alongside Amy Adams as
Lois Lane and the superbly menacing
Michael Shannon as General Zod. With
Christopher Nolan as producer this
could finally be the Superman film the
fans have been waiting for.
World War Z
21st, In Cinemas
Brad Pitt stars in this adaptation of
Max Brooks’ 2006 post apocalyptic
horror novel from director Marc
Forster. With a big name attached and
the fact that Forster is no stranger to
delivering blockbusters (‘Quantum of
Solace’) this should be epic enough to
attract a crowd. Reports are, though,
that it needs to take $400 million at
the box office just to break even.

Fountain Head
We all know the feeling…the sun has just
started to peek through the clouds, so there’s
only one thing for it – shorts and sunglasses
on, shoes off, and a quick dash to the nearest
beer garden. But with most of the year spent
in offices or in the dark, where are the best
outdoor areas to sup a pint on our beautiful coast? Here’s a
rundown of those hidden gems…
102 North Road, 01273 628091
If you’re yearning for an awning
– sorry, terrible para-rhyme there –
then you could do much worse than
the Fountain Head. With a gorgeous
interior, the fact that an attractive
outside area is on hand is just an
added bonus to an already wonderful
establishment. Popular with a diverse
range of drinkers and thinkers, you’ll
find yourself at home here whatever
your poison. drinkinbrighton.co.uk

The Hobgoblin
Sidewinder
31 York Place, 01273 682933
Don’t let the name fool you as The
Hobgoblin has a history of putting on
some of the best punk shows known
to our fair town – but don’t be fooled
into thinking this is simply a dank
place for said goblins to lurk.
There’s a decent-sized pub garden
round the back for fresh air and fun.
That’s music to my ears…
hobgoblinbrighton.co.uk
65 St James’ Street, 01273 679927
Right in the heart of Kemptown,
Sidewinder boasts the lot – great
food, real ales on tap, good DJs,
an open attitude and all with the
wonderful bonus of two – yes, two
– gardens to choose from should the
weather be so inclined. We suggest
you head down one fine weekend for
a Sunday roast and toast the sun on a
job well done. drinkinbrighton.co.uk

Fortune Of War
1 Church Street, 01273 684951
If you don’t know the Mash Tun by
now, then you need to take a walk
through central Brighton. Right at the
heart of the cultural hub, the outdoor
seating area is perfect for watching
the world (and his dog) stroll by. If
people-watching is your thing, there’s
no better place for an afternoon drink
– and it’s pretty lively in the evenings
too. drinkinbrighton.co.uk
157 King’s Road, 01273 205065
Well, there’s not much beating this is
there? Just head down to the Fortune
Of War on a lazy summers’ day with
your nearest and dearest, to let
the wind and waves take all those
troubles away. It gets cosy as it’s right
on the seafront, and you’ve got to
watch seagulls swooping for crisps,
but it is highly, highly recommended.

Not content with being one of the
nation’s most treasured comedic
actors, Hugh Laurie went and
became the highest-paid TV actor in
American history on House. But that’s
not enough; he’s also rather good
at playing the blues. Laurie will be
touring new album ‘Didn’t It Rain’ –
the talented sod would be annoying
if he wasn’t so damn loveable, and so
damn good. hughlaurieblues.com

Toro Y Moi
The Black Angels
Wed 5th, Concorde 2
Coming back strong with a whole
host of catchy-as-hell tracks from
third album ‘Anything In Return’,
Chaz Bundick continues to exceed
expectations. The American is hard to
pin down in terms of genre – while his
work is fused with healthy dollops of
EDM, there’s pop, Eurobeats, starryeyed pop, funk, soul and whatever
else is needed to make great songs
like ‘Say That.’ toroymoi.blogspot.co.uk
Tues 25th, The Haunt
This Texan psych-rock band is making
all the right noises to all the right
people at the moment, riding a wave
of buzz with their jangling songs of
melodic doom doing strange, strange
things to your brain. This is the type
of music your grandmother warns you
about, but you have to dance with the
devil when his moves are this good.

Fri 7th, Sticky Mike’s Frog Bar
“If I die before I wake…” –those
immortal lines from OPM’s hit single
‘Heaven Is A Halfpipe’ will resonate
with anybody of a certain age, and
the California ska/hip-hop/reggae/
anything else rockers are back to blow
your college socks off at Sticky Mike’s
with new material as well as some
old classics. Some love ‘em, some
hate ‘em, but you’ll all be bouncing.

Now that the glorious madness of May’s
festival season has passed us by, there’s a
chance to get yourselves away from the crush
and into some truly first-class gigs in June.
I can’t promise you warmth; I can’t promise
you sunshine; but what I can promise you is
my undying love and a guide to some of the best evenings
you’ll have this year. Read on dear followers, read on …

Ghostpoet
The Moody Blues
Fri 7th, The Haunt
Having seen Ghostpoet live twice, I
can tell you he doesn’t disappoint.
Obaro Ejimiwe’s laid-back delivery
masks the pain and honesty at the
heart of tracks like glorious new
single ‘Meltdown’, and with second
album ‘Some Say I So I Say Light’ set
to put him in the big leagues, catch
him before he’s working alongside
the best and brightest – hell, he
already is. ghostpoet.co.uk
Fri 21st, Brighton Centre
If you like your blues, well, moody,
then you really can’t get much closer
than The Moody Blues. One of the
most successful ever UK acts, the
long-standing rock band have sold
over 55million albums worldwide;
that’s really not bad going, is it?
Prepare to be swept along on a
psychedelic tour de force – and yes,
there will be grown men crying.

Fri 28th, The Old Market, Hove
Born in Texas, raised in Venezuela,
and a teen in California –Devandra
Banhart has a fair few influences to
draw on for his seductive ‘freakfolk’ style. The 31-year-old can offer
up perfectly formed classic ditties
such as ‘Mi Negrita’ to lull you into
a sleepy romance, while on the
other lead you astray with the dark,
trippy ‘Foolin’’. You’ve been warned.

Esperanza Spalding
Love Supreme is the first three day greenfield
jazz festival in the UK for over twenty years,
combining a classic jazz bill with a boutique
festival experience. In association with Jazz
FM, Love Supreme provides a premium bill
combining jazz greats, international legends
and contemporary artists. Found in Glynde,
Sussex, the stunning South Downs and ample grounds of
Glynde Place provide the perfect setting for the festival.
Esperanza Spalding made a massive
impact as the first jazz artist to win
the coveted Grammy Award for best
New Artist in 2011 - a huge triumph
over the pop might of Justin Bieber.
Spalding’s latest release, Radio Music
Society, explores Jazz influences within
the conventional ‘pop’ song structure,
resulting in a diverse, ambitious
and masterful recital. Esperanza will
perform on the main stage on the
Sunday. esperanzaspalding.com

Bryan Ferry & The Bryan
Ferry Orchestra
Melody Gardot
Melody Gardot’s breakthrough album,
‘My One and Only Thrill’, received three
Grammy nominations and sold over
a million copies worldwide. 2012’s
The Absence, inspired by time spent
wandering through Morocco, Brazil
and Lisboa, captures the essence of
these exotic locations while at the
same time remaining quintessentially
Melody Gardot. A gifted songwriter
and a mesmerising live performer, she
is headlining the Big Top on Sunday
7th July. melodygardot.co.uk
Bryan Ferry is a figurehead of
innovation and style in popular music
history. Recently released, ‘The Jazz
Age’ celebrates the 40th anniversary
of his career, rearranging some of his
compositions with a 1920s style Jazz
Orchestra. Ferry will be bringing his
orchestra to the main stage of Love
Supreme to perform The Jazz Age’s UK
live première, as well as classic hits.

Michael Kiwanuka
An old soul in a young man’s body,
it’s hard to listen to Michael Kiwanuka
without thinking of the greats; his
patient melodies call to mind the
very best of Bill Withers, Terry Callier
and Randy Newman. Last year
Michael was announced as winner
of the BBC’s Sound of 2012, and his
gold-certified folk and soul debut
album ‘Home Again’ picked up a
much deserved Mercury nomination.
michaelkiwanuka.com
Renowned for his iconic ‘Later ...’
show, Jools is also a prolific performer
and recording artist in his own right.
On the hugely successful ‘Jools
Holland & Friends’, he has appeared
alongside the likes of Sting, Norah
Jones, Eric Clapton and many more.
Backed by his Rhythm & Blues
Orchestra, there is no better man to
close the Love Supreme Jazz Festival!

Chic Featuring Nile Rodgers
One of disco’s all time greatest bands,
Chic formed in the creative furnace
of late 70s New York and shot to
stardom with a string of worldwide
hits including ‘Le Freak’ and ‘Good

with David Bowie, Madonna & Diana
Ross as well as appearing on Daft
Punk’s smash hit ‘Get Lucky’, which
is based on the classic Chic sound.

Circus Le Muzika*
This month it’s my birthday so I’ll be looking
for some club shenanigans to help me
celebrate. It’s a good job that, as always,
Brighton has enough going on to cater for
even my extremely eclectic tastes. I’m sure we
all take for granted the fantastic nightlife that
we enjoy all year round but without everyone’s support it
cannot flourish so get out there and enjoy. We are so lucky.
Sat 15th, Brighton Music Hall
This is the fourth anniversary of the
popular House night Muzika* and to
celebrate they will be taking over the
venue formerly known as Gemini’s
for a night of dirty beats and circus
feats. DJs include The Drunk Punks,
Lee Garrett, Kate Wildblood & Queen
Jo, Justin Howard and Nick T. Get your
tickets early as it’s bound to sell out.

Deftones Sunday
Spellbound
Sun 2nd, Sticky Mike’s Frog Bar
The American alternative metal
band are celebrating their twenty
five year anniversary at the moment
so it’s only fitting that Sticky Mike’s
are featuring them in their popular
Sunday nights that concentrate on one
band or artist. There’s seven albums
worth of material so if you’re a fan of
the Deftones unique brand of loud/
quiet rock then you’re in for a treat.

Sat 15th, Komedia
The Spellbound juggernaut keeps
on rolling, carrying the alternative
eighties torch steadily onwards. DJs
Simon Price and Jenna Allsop play a
mix of all things that were musically
good about the decade (yes there
were quite a few). Forget Wham and
Madonna and think The Cure, The
Cult and The Specials. It’s an essential
night out whether reliving your youth
or just discovering the music.

Donky Pitch
Fri 7th, Green Door Store
The Donky Pitch gang introduce a
new bi-monthly night of wonky
electronica. The first headliner of the
new season is local sonic adventurer
Itel Tek bringing you a mixture of
melodic dubstep and synth soaked
hip hop. Chesslo Junior combines hip
hop with elements of grime and a
back to back set from Ghost Mutt and
Grinel completes this great line up.
