Letter From COO/GM Dear Members, First, a big “THANK YOU” to Dan Brutto for over 6 years of service as a Board Member and several more years on committees. Dan has decided to step down from his position on the Board of Directors. At this time the Board would like to welcome Andy Leonard to serve in place of Dan for the remainder of his term, which ends in October. Andy Leonard and his wife, Janelle, have two children, Andrew and Maiya, have been Members for several years. Andy has served on a committee for several years during his time here. He and his family use all aspects of St Ives. Our normal adventurous winter season is finally behind us and we recently welcomed the arrival of spring. With the warmer weather comes the increase in outdoor activities. The Golf Course is starting to green up and the Engineering Department is working hard to get the Pool ready for the season. As a reminder, please be courteous of the Golf Course rules. During the summer there are more young adults outside in the neighborhood. Please help us make them aware that the Golf Course is restricted to golf only and should not be used as a recreational or play area for non-golfers. For your child’s safety, they need to be aware of golfers. • Pets are not allowed on St Ives Club property. This includes the Golf Course, Tennis area, Pool, and Main Clubhouse • Members and non-members are not allowed to walk/jog/ run on the Golf Course • Anyone driving a golf cart on Club property must have a valid driver’s license. No one should hang off a cart, stand in the club storage area while moving, etc. • Keep an eye out for night time Golf Course vandalism If you witness any of this, please call the Club at 770.623.1239. If you are calling outside of normal Club hours of operations, call the emergency number at 404.362.1663. We look forward to seeing everyone at your Club. Please contact me at any time if you feel I may be of assistance. Your input is always welcome. We are here to serve. Hit ‘Em Straight! Upcoming Ladies Instructional Programs By Mollie Boney, PGA, HFS Shake the Shanks While we all want to shy away from that dreaded “s word,” the shank can be a common, frustrating problem. As I’m sure we all know from experience, when we hit one, there are often more coming. Use the following guidelines to not only avoid the shanks, but how to get yourself out of them if they do arise. 1. Understand the shank: Most golfers think the shank is caused by an open clubface, when in fact it usually comes from an excessively closed clubface. With an out-to-in swing path, the clubface closes to a point where the hosel strikes the ball, causing the shank. With this understanding, make sure you aren’t trying to close the face even more. 2. Setup: The shanks often occur when your stance is too close to the ball. Take a step back, even if it feels like you are slightly reaching for the ball. We have added four more weeks to our spring Ladies’ Golf Clinics - that’s a total of 12 weeks of instruction! Join us anytime in covering all areas of the game including: Full Swing, Short Game, and Course Management. SPRING LADIES GOLF CLINIC DATES Fridays │ 9:30am - 11:00am MAY 6th, 13th, 20th, 27th JUNE 10th, 17th, 24th 3. Path: The closed clubface is often caused by an out-to-in swing path (more commonly, “over the top”). Place an object (2x4, alignment stick, headcover, etc.) about an inch outside of the golf ball. Make sure not to hit the object on your downswing. *Clinics will not be held on June 3rd. SIWGA News By Aline Cook The 2016 season is off to a great start thanks in no small measure to all the hard work put in by the SIWGA Board during the off-season! A special thanks to Michelle Janicki and her officers for all the planning, process improvements, and keeping us apprised of pro-shop and agronomy updates. A change welcomed by all is the new Ringer Card System devised by our Golf Coordinator, Val Lesniak. Opening Day was a fabulous success and the weather could not have been scripted more beautifully - in fact, sunny, warm days were the rule rather than the exception for the entire month of March. All those in attendance for Opening Day were warmly welcomed by Head Pro, Billy Jack. Mollie Boney presented the new online sign-up system which streamlines the registration process for regular play, team play, and all SIWGA calendar events. We trust everyone is enjoying this enhancement. Grounds Superintendent, Kyle MacDonald, provided all with an update of current and future course improvements - as a bonus, mascots Rugby and Wesson paid a surprise visit to the ladies on the driving range before play! Please make sure you check the calendar in your 2016 Yearbook (many thanks for another fine job by Sue Shirk) or on the website for other upcoming important dates. And remember, May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month so keep the sunscreen handy. Providing a special opportunity to do a bit of early spring shopping, Donna Norris, our Pro Shop Manager, hosted a trunk show featuring selections from Hipsi Belts and Jo Fit. All in all, it was a most informative and fun-filled kick-off to what promises to be a memorable golf season. See you on the course! At this writing we are only a little over six short weeks from our coveted SIWGA Member/Guest Tournament. We hope everyone has already extended invitations to their guests and signed-up! Holding it later this year should afford everyone ample opportunity to finely hone their skills! Mark your calendars for the following: upcoming SIWGA events JUNE 15th SIWGA President’s Cup - 1st round begin 21st SIWGA Member Guest practice round 22nd - 23rd SIWGA Member Guest Tournament #9 13 • FROM TEE TO GREEN • St Ives Country Club JUNIOR GOLF PROGRAMS The 2016 Spring Junior Golf programs have been very popular! If your child’s schedule does not allow participation in the clinics, we have created a “Build-Your-Own Coaching Plan”. This plan revolves around your child’s schedule. It is designed for an individual, or a small group of junior golfers (between 1 - 4 players). This allows one-on-one or small group instruction with the Golf Professional of your choice. Designed to bring a “Little League” atmosphere to the game of golf, PGA Junior League provides a structured league environment for junior golfers to compete and have fun. The local teams will consist of four to seven teams within reasonable geographic proximity. Competitions consist of three, 3-hole matches, also known as “flags”, which allow for substitutions between flags, giving everyone a chance to play. The league season runs from May 1st - July 31st with championships to follow. Each player will receive: • team jersey • golf balls • bag tag • flag stickers (based on competitions won) which affix to their bag tag The team is limited to 16 players. Cost is $175.00. Pricing is for eight hours of instruction. Please contact a member of the Golf Staff to set up your child’s plan. Players can schedule respective matches at their convenience but the rounds assigned must be concluded by the dates/times as described to avoid excessive scheduling issues and 18 • COURTSIDE • St Ives Country Club delays between select participants (e.g. - Round #1 may have Player A against Player D; Player B vs Player C, etc.). • If this tournament has six or more participants per flighted level, then the Director of Tennis shall “seed” all the players as a draw with players to participate against players in each respective round of their draw and then winners of each round to advance in their portion of the draw and eventually play for the championship and finalist awards (e.g. Seed #1 and Seed #2 may have a bye; Seed #3 plays Seed #5; Seed #4 plays Seed #6, etc. with winners to advance). A consolation bracket may be considered depending on the number of participants in the main draw. • All matches as determined by the “draw” or the round robin format must be completed within a two week period of time based on mutual participant agreement. However, if match participants cannot schedule or agree to match dates/day or times within the two week allocated period, then the match will be formally scheduled for the Sunday that concludes the two week period at 9:30am. If a player or players cannot participate before or on that Sunday morning concluding the two week allocation, then one or both will “forfeit” that particular match if they do not “show up” and play the match on that scheduled Sunday at 9:30am. The objective is to avoid select matches remaining in a prolonged “scheduling” status. The Tennis Professional Staff will send the draws to the Members. Please adhere to the following Club Policies when bringing guests to the Pool: • All guests must be checked in at the Pool Registration Desk by a Member • A Guest Fee will be charged to the Member’s account at a cost of $7.00 per person/per visit. No cash payments are accepted • A guest’s total number of visits are limited to 10 times per season* *A resident guest may visit the Pool a maximum of 10 times during the calendar year. *A Non-Resident Pool Guest is defined as someone residing more than 50 miles away and is staying in the home of a Member. These guests may register at the Clubhouse with the management of the Club to be able to use the Pool while staying in the home of the Member for a guest fee of $100.00 per person, for unlimited use during their stay, or the daily fee amount if more cost-effective. If a Member has more than one non-resident guest staying with them at the same time, the maximum charge will be $250.00 per family. If a Member decides to use this program after they have paid the daily guest fee, all of those charges may be applied to this program. Please see the Club’s bylaws for complete resident and non-resident descriptions. Limits on guest usage are defined in the Club’s bylaws to ensure and recognize the benefits of exclusive Club Membership. Each area of the Club has specific maximum limits on the number of times guests who live within a fifty-mile radius of the Club may play or use those areas. There is also an OVERALL limit for guest usage of the club in general. No combination of Guest use of the Clubhouse, Tennis, Pool, or Golf should exceed 12 times/year. Guest privileges may be denied or revoked at any time for reasons considered sufficient by the Board in its sole and absolute discretion. Guests must be accompanied by a Member or a Member’s Qualified Dependent when using the Club’s facilities. With the exception of certain golf charges, charges or purchases made for guests must be made through the Member’s account. Members are responsible for assuring that their guests are not exceeding guest limits. If a guest has exceeded the allowed limits, the hosting Member will be subject to disciplinary action. This discipline could include suspension of guest privileges, suspension of the Member, and the possibility of expulsion if severe violations occur. Logo Mug Program At The Cabana For our 7th summer, we will sell nice insulated logo mugs at the Pool in an effort to cut down on paper/plastic waste and trash at the pool. Est. 1989 As always, we will begin selling the mugs on opening weekend through the first couple of weeks or until we have sold out. The new mugs sold at the beginning of each season are always a new color so you must purchase and use this year’s mug in order to benefit from the complimentary beverages for the first summer of use. If you use last year’s mug, regular beverage pricing will apply. We certainly encourage use of last year’s mugs. The price per new mug is $11.50 and as long as you use this mug at the Cabana, you will receive complimentary fountain sodas and iced tea ALL SUMMER LONG! The price if you use mugs from previous years is $1.75 for fountain soda and $1.75 for iced tea. In order to receive the complimentary beverage, you must have the mug with you when you place your order. These mugs are not usable in the other areas of the Club. We will give the children colored markers so they can have fun decorating them and will remember which mug is theirs all summer. We look forward to another fun summer at the St Ives Pool! 2525• •COURTSIDE POOLSIDE • St Ives Country Club MAY 2016 Sunday Monday 1 Tuesday 2 Wednesday 3 Closed 8 9 10 15 16 22 23 Closed (pool closed during the week) 29 17 Third Tuesday Duplicate Bridge 11 12 Kids Eat Free! in the Turnberry Grille from 5:00 - 7:00pm 18 19 20 21 Kids Eat Free! in the Pool Opening Prime Rib Special Turnberry Grille Weekend! in The Ascott Room from 5:00 - 7:00pm 4:00pm Pool Opens Live Music on the Turnberry Patio 25 26 27 28 Kids Eat Free! in the Pool Opens Prime Rib Special Turnberry Grille at 4:00pm in The Ascott Room from 5:00 - 7:00pm “Friday Night Trivia Night in the Unwind at the Pool Main Bar “Fire up the Grill” Friday Evening Bridge Family Night 24 Ladies Daytime Bridge 30 Memorial Day at the Pool 26 • CALENDAR • St Ives Country Club Family Night 31 Closed Saturday 5 Kids Eat Free! in the Turnberry Grille from 5:00 - 7:00pm Family Night Closed Friday 4 Family Night Closed Mother’s Day Brunch Thursday 6 7 Prime Rib Special in The Ascott Room 13 14 Ladies Duplicate Prime Rib Special Bridge in The Ascott Room JUNE 2016 Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday 1 Friday 2 Family Night - No Kids Room on this night Saturday 3 4 Friday Night No dinner service Unwind at the Pool on this night. “Fabulous Flatbreads” Men’s Member Guest Invitational (Turnberry Grille Closed Wednesday through Saturday) 5 6 Closed 12 13 Closed 19 Father’s Day Steak-Out Event (Turnberry Mixed/ Men’s Grill & Patio close promptly at 4:00pm) 7 Tons of Fun Tuesdays at the Pool “Lawn Twister” 14 Games for Grandparents Day at the Pool “Human Bubbles” 20 Closed 26 27 Closed 15 16 17 18 Kids Eat Free! in the Friday Night Prime Rib Special Turnberry Grille Unwind at the Pool in The Ascott Room from 5:00 - 7:00pm “Sangria and Tapas” Live Music on the Turnberry Patio 22 23 24 25 Kids Eat Free! in the Friday Night Prime Rib Special Turnberry Grille Unwind at the Pool in The Ascott Room from 5:00 - 7:00pm “Seafood Boil” Friday Evening Bridge 29 30 Kids Eat Free! in the Turnberry Grille from 5:00 - 7:00pm Trivia Night in the Main Bar Family Night 28 Ladies Daytime Bridge 9 10 11 Kids Eat Free! in the Friday Night Prime Rib Special Turnberry Grille Unwind at the Pool in The Ascott Room from 5:00 - 7:00pm “Summer Kabobs” Ladies Duplicate Bridge Family Night 21 Tons of Fun Tuesdays at the Pool “Hula Hoop Contest” Third Tuesday Duplicate Bridge 8 Family Night Family Night 27 • CALENDAR • St Ives Country Club One St Ive s C ou nt r y C lub Frequently Used Numbers After Hours Club Emergency Receptionist *During normal business hours contact the Club at 770.623.1239. 770.623.1239 404.362.1663* 770.623.1239 x1000 Business Offices Hours of Operation Clubhouse MondayClosed Tuesday & Sunday 9:00am - 8:00pm Wednesday & Thursday 9:00am - 10:00pm Friday & Saturday 9:00am - Midnight Sunday 9:00am - 8:00pm Receptionist Tuesday - Saturday 9:00am - 5:00pm Business Offices Monday - Friday 9:00am - 5:00pm Golf Pro Shop MondayClosed Tuesday - Friday 7:00am - 6:30pm Saturday - Sunday 6:30am - 6:30pm Driving Range MondayClosed Tuesday - Saturday 7:30am - 8:00pm Sunday 7:00am - 7:30pm Tennis Pro Shop MondayClosed Tuesday - Friday 9:00am - 4:30pm Saturday & Sunday 9:00am - 5:00pm Social Networking at St Ives Scan the QR code above or send “stivescc” as a text message to 313131 to receive text message updates from St Ives Country Club.
