year. My thanks to scholarship Chairman Walt Crider for
a job well done. I know it was not an easy job selecting
the winners.
THE PRESIDENT’S
MESSAGE
DICK BECKLEY
As I write this the festival season is in full swing. I've just
spent a music filled week at Gettysburg with the highlight
of the festival being the Earls of Leicester performing a 90
minute set on Saturday evening. Close your eyes and the
clock turned back to the 40's and 50's as the music of Flatt
& Scruggs filled the air. Shawn Camp is a gifted vocalist
who almost brings Lester Flatt back to life with his renditions of Lester's vocals. Jerry Douglas, Johnny Warren,
Lou Reid, Barry Bales and Charley Cushman also contributed to making the Foggy Mountain Boys sounds fill the air
at Gettysburg.
I am planning on attending my first Remington Ryde festival in July and my first visit to the Castaway's Ocean City
Bluegrass Festival in late September. We'll put a few more
miles on the bus this year and still save some cash as Karen and I have decided to bypass IBMA for the first time
since 2000. There have been a lot of politics playing out at
IBMA in the past year, not to my liking and we felt that music is supposed to be fun and not supposed to be filled
with the drama and unrest that this presents. I do believe,
however, that their hiring of Paul Schminger as the new
Executive Director is a sign that the IBMA Board is finally
moving in the right direction. Paul is sort of a local to those
of us in these parts as he hails from Baltimore and has
been playing banjo for the Baltimore bluegrass group,
High Strung. He also brings excellent credentials to the
position as Paul has been an Executive with Wilmington
Trust, a branch of M&T Bank and is also a stock broker.
Now, if the Board steps back and permits him to do his
job, we may very well see some moves in the right direction going forth. Additionally, I am looking forward to the
next change of officers on the IBMA Board when, hopefully, my friend Tim Surrett of the great band, Balsam Range
moves to the Presidency. Tim is currently VP and I think
he will quickly move IBMA further down the road in the
right direction.
This year, we were able to fund scholarships of $250 each
to 4 deserving youths to further their musical skills on
whatever instrument they are playing. We had a record 13
students apply for these scholarships. Thanks to our members’ generous contributions, we were able to add 2 scholarships to the 2 that SMBA budgets for. As the contributions come in, we may be able to increase the number
Page 3
I cannot end this President's Message without asking
each of you to keep some friends of mine in your
thoughts and prayers as they fight a brave fight. My
longtime colleague and friend Jon Raemore, has been
seriously ill for some months and is now back home
with 24/7 care. Jon has been our Music Committee
Chairman ever since I've been a member and I've
worked closely with him on the Music Committee for the
last 12 years. Words cannot adequately express how
much I miss him and miss working with him. Since his
illness, I've assumed the position of Music Committee
Chairman and now fully realize how much work Jon put
into this.
James King is also seriously ill with liver and kidney
problems. James is fighting Hepatitis C and is also diabetic. Additionally, his kidneys have begun to weaken
from the strain of this illness. He was in UVA Hospital
last week and now is on the list there for a possible liver
transplant operation. There are a lot of hoops to jump
through to make this happen. Please say a prayer for
James that he gets this chance and is strong enough to
withstand this operation if it becomes available. James
has been a good friend for at least 25 years and to me
is a living legend, deserving of a Bluegrass Hall of
Fame induction. As James King fans know, he has led a
colorful life and brought a lot of his health problems on
himself, but he has walked the straight line since 2008
and turned his life around. I pray that it is not too late for
him. We have booked James for our Oct 10 opening
show of the 2015-16 season and hope that he is on the
mend and able to be here.
Bluegrass is wonderful but the friends I have made thru
this great music are even more precious. No matter
where I go to hear bluegrass anywhere in this country, I
see friends that I've made and nothing can top that.
Bluegrass friends are the best and a special breed. The
music creates a bond of friendship that is strong and
lasting. Any time I attend a festival or concert, I realize
this all over again. For those of you that attend festivals
and concerts, you know what I mean. For those who do
not, get out there and attend some of the events. You
don't know what you're missing!
Please plan to attend the SMBA picnic on Saturday July
25 at Allenberry. Great food, great friends, entertainment by Reno & Harrell, all day jams, and 6 instruments
and many other prizes given away in our annual raffle.

The International Bluegrass Music Museum
SMBA is listed as one of only 5 current association members of The International Bluegrass Music Museum.
To check this out simply enter www.bluegrass-museum.org, click on membership and giving, on the list of options on
the left side of your screen. Then scroll down again to associations under membership and giving, again on the left of
the screen. There are 5 associations currently listed there at the bottom of the Assn. Membership blurb. We are one of
them.
Then again go to the list on the left of your screen and click on Worldwide Bluegrass. Click again on the left under
Worldwide Bluegrass on Bluegrass Associations and scroll down to Seven Mountains. This is a link to our website.
A well spent donation to IBMM on our part as we get the benefit of a worldwide link to our website, national recognition
as a member association and we help in funding the activities of the IBMM.
This is an outstanding museum and one that the bluegrass community and our members can be proud of, and a destination worth the trip for anyone interested in bluegrass and it's history.

Attention SMBA members that play in a bluegrass band
If you’re a SMBA member and play in a bluegrass band you can add your band to the list of available bluegrass bands. This list will be added to the newsletter much like the jam section toward the rear of the newsletter. It will provide one place for anyone that needs a bluegrass band for that special occasion to find contact information for the band.
Please send your information to the newsletter editor.

SMBA PICNIC—JULY 25
The Twelfth Annual Seven Mountains Bluegrass Association Picnic and Raffle will be held on July 25, 2015 –
12:00 noon until dark at Allenberry on the Yellow Breaches, 1559 Boiling Springs Road, Boiling Springs, PA
17007
Come out and enjoy the band, food, prizes, jam sessions and fellowship. Bring your lawn chairs, instruments
and music.
Menu: Barbecued chicken, hot dogs, hamburgers, salads, chips, sodas, ice tea, lemonade and desserts. Meal
served 1:15 PM until 3:00 PM. No alcoholic beverages. Cost of tickets for adults $22 per person,
children $10 per person, children under 3 free.
This year’s band will be Reno and Harrell. This instantly brings to mind the 1960s band fronted by bluegrass
legends Don Reno and Bill Harrell. However, the 2015s version of Reno and Harrell is Dale and Don Wayne
Reno with Mitch Harrell, longtime musicians and friends since childhood who are following in their fathers’
footsteps. The band will play two sets at 12:30 PM and 3:00 PM. Come out and enjoy this Bluegrass band
from legendary roots.
Contained in the raffle this year will be 6 bluegrass related musical instruments including a Martin Guitar and
other bluegrass items. Tickets are $2 each and can be purchased from any club member. Need not be present to
win.
Thank you for your support and good luck!
Best regards
George Fishel, Chairman, Picnic and Raffle Committee
JIMMY MARTIN AMONG US—BY WALT CRIDER
Jimmy Martin was one of the most popular
bluegrass musicians in the music industry. He
was born in Sneedville, Tennessee in 1927 and
was playing with Bill Monroe and the Bluegrass
Boys by 1949. By 1955 through 2005 he had his
own band. As I looked at Jimmy's long music history, I realized a lot of "Sunny Mountain Boys"
lives in southern Pennsylvania, the Seven Mountains Bluegrass Association area. I contacted as
many as I knew who had known, played and/or
recorded with him. All were happy to talk about
their time with Jimmy:
Chris Warner, East Berlin, Pa. Banjo
" While attending the 1966 Fincastle Bluegrass
Festival, I was standing back on a hill with my
good friend Clifford Baer, listening to Bill Monroe
and the Osborne Brothers singing “I Hear a
Sweet Voice Calling”. As chills ran up my back, I
told Cliff if it is any way possible, I was going to someday play professionally. In 1967 I was in contact with Bill
Monroe about playing with him. It almost happened but
one year later, I was fortunate enough to get the job with
my idol Jimmy Martin. During 1968 and 1969, I recorded
a total of nine cuts with Jimmy including “Freeborn Man”
and “Milwaukee Here I Come”. Later in 1978, I recorded
four cuts on Jimmy Martin’s “Greatest Bluegrass Hits”. In
1985, I returned and stayed until October 1989. Jimmy
insisted on timing and vocal arrangement.
Tom Adams, East Berlin, Pa. Banjo
"Jimmy was not recording when I played with him from
1983-85. Audie Blaylock (mandolin) and I started with
Jimmy at the same time. Chris Warner really got me up
to speed on what I would need to know to play with Jimmy. Working with Jimmy made me examine the smallest
details in my banjo playing and I benefited immensely
from the experience. "

Page 6
JIMMY MARTIN AMONG US—BY WALT CRIDER
Keith Kupp, Adamstown, Pa. Banjo
"I first met Jimmy at the Gettysburg festival in 1971.
After the shows, we gathered for a jam session. Imagine our surprise when Jimmy Martin listened to
us then borrowed a guitar and joined in. I was excited to be pickin with him at 16 years old! He commented that I had good solid timing and ask me join
him on stage the next day. He ask me what I wanted to pick, I said Little Maggie. Then he calls his
banjo player J D Crowe to play along with me. Only
later did I realize the honor and privilege it was. I will
never forget that day. A few years later he ask me if
I would want to play in his band. My first job with
him was in Tazwell, Virginia and the first song was
Sophronie. I continued to play for the next to two
months but I declined the offer to move to Nashville
to become his permanent banjo player. We remained friends and I am thankful for the wonderful
time I spent with Jimmy".
Dick Laird, York, Pa. Electric Bass
"I played electric bass with Jimmy in July through
September of 1986. I had never played bass outside of my living room until the first job in Michigan. I
met Jimmy one half hour before we went on stage
with Chris Warner, Audie Blaylock and Charlie
Kline. On the second set we were joined by Ralph
Stanley. The next day we played in Georgia, driving
all night to get there. That summer we played in
Kentucky, West Virginia and Maryland. I had a wonderful time meeting musicians I had only heard before. (A friend of mine ask me, why play bass with
Jimmy Martin? I said because I can). So I will always be a Sunny Mountain Boy."
Earl Yager, Spring Grove, Pa. Acoustic bass
"Chris Warner was responsible for me joining the
Sunny Mt. Boys back in the 1980's. The first season
I just played the upright bass, but after Charlie Cline
left the band. I had to take the bass singing chores
in the Quartet. Playing music with Jimmy Martin was
like going to College. You majored in Tone and Timing. I learned so much playing his style of music.
When he was trying to explain something to me I
really listened. My two most memorable shows were
The Ralph Emory Show on The Nashville Network
in 1988 and a show we played with Chubby Checker & The Wild Cats down in Lebanon Va. in 1989. I
regret that I never got a chance to record in a studio
with Jimmy. I was on the second VHS Video that he
recorded. I guess I'll probably be remembered most
for giving away the bride at Jimmy's only wedding.
Marty Stuart once said Jimmy's music was like a
mixture of moonshine and dynamite.
Audie Blaylock, Garrett, Indiana. Mandolin
(Although not from this area, Audie has played a lot
here, including the Seven Mountains concert series).
" I played with Jimmy 1982 through 1991. Although
not in the studio, our TV shows were turned into recordings. There was tiring times, good and bad.
There was an element of insecurity, as with any
band. Jimmy said 'If you learn this, you will be able
to play with anyone, it will be second nature'. The
main objective was vocals and timing as he taught
technique, singing full with tone, especially tenor".
Gloria Belle, Hanover, Pa. and Nashville Tn. Bass
" I worked with Jimmy from 1969 through 1973. We
made at least 20 recordings together. I sang mostly
high baritone. In 1974, I went with Charlie Monroe
until Jimmy called me back to be with him until 1978.
Jimmy could teach all of the instruments and singing
parts. Once when on tour in Japan, Jimmy was talking too much and the crowd couldn't understand
what he was saying. They said 'Just sing!'
Bill Runkle, Red Lion, Pa. Banjo
"My very first LP record was by Jimmy Martin. I never traveled with Jimmy but did play with him when he
came to this area from time to time. We would go
coon hunting together, which was a loving past time
for Jimmy. One quiet moon lit night in southern York
County near the Susquehanna river as the hounds
bayed Jimmy said 'I'd rather be doing this than playing on the Grand Ole Opry'. He wanted me to leave
here and go with him. Sorry I couldn't."
Randy Stewart, Stewartstown, Pa. Banjo
"I never played with Jimmy Martin but did get to
meet him in the early 1970's through Chris Warner.
What struck me most was how relatively quiet and
relaxed he seemed, quite differently from the way he
acted on stage."
With the love of Jimmy's music in all us fans and
pickers, I think his influence will be around along
time. With bands like Aspen Run and Kody Norris, I
think it's guaranteed. If any members have memorable moments that would be of interest to others for a
future story, contact me at [email protected]
