A smaller number of participants took
part in this year’s MGA-sanctioned
RSGC Ladies Amateur Open. There
were a number of reasons for this
including a change of date and clashes
with similar events in the region. This
did not detract from the enjoyment
of those who did play. Overseas
participants came from Japan,
Thailand and Indonesia.
The Organising Committee decided
to make the course more challenging
by lengthening eight holes of the
course. It sounded daunting but all
the nett winners played under their
handicaps with six of them scoring
between 65 and 68 strokes.
The course was in a superb
condition. The greens ran at 10.5 on
the Stimpmeter and pin positions
required precision both in terms of
speed and reading of the breaks. The
rough was sufficiently high to bury the
THE CIRCULAR
errant ball but the greatest challenge
came when the ball was stuck on the
slopes above the bunkers. It would
have been easier if the embankments
above the bunker were designed so
that the ball would fall back into
the bunker. For some participants,
playing a shot on the steep edges was
quite hazardous.
There were two incidents where our
referees were needed to offer advice.
A ball rested on the out of bounds
line; it was deemed to be still in play as
it had not fallen beyond the line.
In the fourth hole of the Old Course,
a Par 3 with the pond between tee
and green, a ball crossed the water but
landed in the water hazard close to the
rocks, out of sight to the player.
The Referee advised her to decide
whether she wished to play her ball
as it lies. If the decision is that the
ball cannot be played, then the player
should hit another shot from before
the water hazard with a penalty stroke.
After playing 54 holes over three
days, juniors emerged top winners.
South Korean Julie Kim Joo Yeon,
16, from Kelab Darul Ehsan, claimed
the Tuanku Bahiyah trophy with a total
score of 222. Geraldine Wong, 15, came
in a close second with 223 strokes.
Third place went to Warda Amira
Abdul Rawof, 17, who scored 225.
Joo Yeon said she could hardly
believe her win as Geraldine
(Malaysian Ladies Golf Association,
MALGA) was a strong player and had
been leading over the first two days. “I
didn’t think I would catch up. I missed
several short putts. But I just focused
on my game and believed in myself.
The greens were good and my chipping
and putting paid off,’’ said the teenager
at RSGC’s prize-giving lunch.
Geraldine, who was leading in the
first two days, looked disappointed
at first, but was soon seen smiling
with her fellow players. “I was threeunder. Everything was going well.
But I felt nervous and under a lot of
pressure. On the 2nd nine, I fumbled
a lot. I made mistakes in my long
game and Joo Yeon was on my tail and
closing in.’’
Her coach Lim Siew Ai was there
to give her support. “I advised her to
relax. You have to fail to be successful.
Just learn from the situation and move
on. Geraldine’s a solid player. At the
end of the day, it is about challenging
yourself while enjoying the game. I
don’t let her mope too long,’’ Siew Ai
said with a smile.
“Geraldine has improved in her
strikes and adjusted her putting.
Experience comes from playing in
tournaments. Keep playing and the
rewards will come!’’
Warda Amira, 17, from KGNS was
pleased with her scores despite trailing
in third place. “I hit solidly for three
days. My first two days were good.
The first round was an even par. But I
made silly mistakes in the last round
and bogeyed on the putts. I was seven
strokes behind. ‘’
Like other young golf hopefuls,
Warda dreams of going professional.
She will attend College golf next year
and is sitting for the IGCSE exams
this year.
A lot of hope was pinned on Iman
Ahmad Nordin who won the title in
2010. She is studying at the Texas
State College University and had
returned for summer break. “I started
pretty well. The conditions were
perfect and it’s a good course. But my
swing technique was not consistent
and I was struggling.’’
Nett winners included Ho Jo Yee
from Tropicana Golf & Country Resort
who took the Toh Puan Norashikin
Trophy with a score of 135. Jacqueline
from left: jolene wong, rosa shin and
chizuko hirata .
Cheong from Kelab Darul Ehsan and
Joanne Low Ji Ting from Glenmarie
Country Golf Club came in second and
third respectively with a score of 140
ocb and 140.
For the Team Nett event, Kim Joo
Yeon, Jacqueline Cheong and Kim Joo
Yeon from Kelab Darul Ehsan clinched
the Piala Clarissa Lee. The MALGA
team of Geraldine Wong, Warda Amira
and Junie Khaw walked away with
the Datin Azian Trophy in the Gross
Team event.
After a lavish lunch provided by
Modesto’s, it was time for the main
highlight. Organising Chairperson
Ai-Leen Tan, Lady Golf Captain
Rosie Dewal, and past Lady Captains
Zuraidah Ismail, Clarissa Lee and Nina
Ghazali gave out trophies and prizes
for the various categories.
Shouts of glee and applause rang
out as Warda Amira and Nurlida Amis
from KGNS went up on stage to claim
runner-up geraldine wong
their lucky draw prizes – two Air Asia
tickets to Goa!
In her speech, Ai-leen said that even
though the field this year was small,
they had made every effort to make
the Championship challenging and
enjoyable. She thanked the sponsors
and generous Members who supported
with cash donations, prizes and
goodie bags.
Kudos to the Organising Committee,
volunteers and staff who made
everything work smoothly. Pulling
off this event was a challenge. The
Organising Committee had only a
three-month window and a reduced
budget. But they worked hard at fundraising and were successful in getting
RM50,000 to support the event.
Looking ahead, there are plans to
lower the Handicap USGA Index for
players in future events in an effort
to make this a significant event for
aspiring professional golfers.

CARRYING ON THE TRADITION
18 to 20 August 2015
By Sharifah Intan
RSGC will play host to the 41st
Ladies Amateur Open from 18 to 20
Aug 2015. “We are proud to continue
the long and cherished tradition of
hosting one of the country’s oldest
golf championships. The RSGC
Ladies Amateur Open is a World
Amateur Golf Ranked (WAGR)sanctioned event and has been
running for over 40 years,’’ said
Organising Committee Chairman
Ai-leen Tan.
“This event has always attracted
participants from the Asia-Pacific
region. We are targeting a field
of about 100 players. Indonesia,
Australia and Japan have already
indicated interest in participating.
This year’s Organising Committee
is endeavouring to raise the profile
of the championship and we
hope to attract world-ranked lady
amateur golfers to the event. “As
an incentive, the five lowest ranked
amateur golfers on the WAGR who
register to play at this year’s event
will be provided five nights’ free
accommodation at our appointed
hotel,’’ said Ai-leen. “They will
also have their entry fee of RM600
waived.’’
The Ladies Amateur Open gives
players the opportunity to develop
their game to the next level.
Malaysian Kelly Tan, who won two
years ago, has gone on to play in the
LPGA Tour. Last year’s winner Chiara
Arya from Jakarta Country Club
subsequently earned a placing on the
Women’s World Amateur
Golf Rankings.
The competition comes on
the heels of the RSGC AmBank
Junior Amateur Open which was
successfully staged in April this year.
“Our greens are among the best
in the country. The ladies will be
playing on the East Course which
is our championship course. What
could be more perfect than playing
with the iconic twin towers as the
backdrop?’’ said Ai-leen.
The Championship will be played
over 5866 yards. Entries are open to
all amateur lady golfers with a USGA
Handicap Index of 20.9 and below or
a club handicap of not more than 24.
The tournament will begin with a
one-day practice round on 17 Aug,
followed by the three-day main event
to be played on a Strokeplay format.
There are four Challenge Trophies to
be won: Individual Gross, Individual
Nett, Team Gross and Team Nett. A
special hole-in-one prize will also be
up for grabs.
