BOBBY HANGS UP HIS HI-VIZ VEST!
2
S I Mechanical Ltd
WAY BACK in 1999, led by Mike and
Joan Tomlinson, a group of people with
Learning Difficulties from their base
at Whitewater Day Service, began
the waste collecting and processing
enterprise we now know as R.O.B.
Now, after 14 years of service, Bobby
Brewin at the spritely age of 70 has
had his retirement bestowed upon
him by his body’s insistence that
he’s done his bit for the community.
Happily, Bobby has not passed away,
but has merely taken a step back from
his usual routine.
Over the years, Bobby has seen
R.O.B. grow, from a fledgling social
enterprise serving 200 households into
a respected local charity, satisfying the
recycling needs of 6000 households
and almost 100 local businesses in
10 local communities. He has seen
trustees, project managers and
support staff come and go and a whole
host of new ideas tried and tested. He
has seen the organisation move away
from Whitewater and into, first one
and then two units on the Boughton
Industrial Estate.

In late 2010, Bobby suffered a couple
of strokes which curtailed his activities
at Whitewater and at R.O.B. and also
brought to an end the endless hours
passing time away by watching the
traffic pass by outside the family
home on the corner of Forest Road
and Whinney Lane.
When it came to looking to the future,
the management at R.O.B. were
unsure that the project was the right
place for him given his needs. But
Bobby wouldn’t be beaten and let
his family and social services know
that he wanted to spend his time at
R.O.B.

A representative of Newark Community
Learning Disability Team pointed out that
our perception of what Bobby got from his
attendance was not necessarily the same
as his own and that this was the most
important thing.
The management team made some
alterations to duties and soon Bobby
was riding out with the teams on both
Kerbside and Business collections. The
relationships he has with everybody at
R.O.B. always raises a smile, whether
he’s sharing a joke with somebody, giving
them a piece of his mind or digging his
heels in because he’s not getting his own
way. Whatever the situation, Bobby can
never be described as a wallflower.
As a R.O.B. team member supporting
Bobby, it was always pleasing to see the
way that he wants to interact with anybody
and everybody whilst out on the rounds,
and the way in which everybody was
always keen to give him a little bit of their
own time.
Bobby is now in residence in Bishops
Court and the R.O.B. team will be making
special visits to ensure that he knows that
he’ll always be a part of Recycling Ollerton
and Boughton. Bobby’s sister Annette
said, “R.O.B. has been Bob’s life. Every
minute of the day it’s all he talks about, so
on behalf of his family I would like to offer
my sincere thanks to all of you for the time
and attention given to Robert during his
time at R.O.B.”
If you would like to support R.O.B., get your
glass collected and require a recycling box
and bags or a business collection, please
contact R.O.B. on 01623 863955, email:

THANKS A TON
What a success the Dukeries and District
Foodbank had when they were at the local
Tesco asking for donations recently to
help put food back on their shelves! After
being open just four months and feeding
253 local people who are in crisis, the food
was going down. But you the public did
an amazing job and we collected just over
a ton of food. So, thank you to everyone
who came along and supported us so
generously, without you there would not
be a foodbank. We would also like to thank
Tesco, especially Steve and his team who
made us very welcome and made sure the
weekend was a great success. Also a few
weeks’ ago a number of volunteers did
a sponsored walk to raise money for the
project; with the help of Sally the dog this
also was a great success raising £430.00
which will be put to good use within the
foodbank. If anyone would like to donate
food they can take it to the foodbank at the
Methodist Church on Forest Road when it
is open either on a Monday or a Thursday
from 12 noon to 2pm.
For anyone who feels they may need the
foodbank please contact either their local
Citizens’ Advice Bureau (CAB), health
visitors, children and family centers, ODEF,
or call the foodbank on 07716 439 740 and
someone will help you.

WE ONLY MOT – BOUGHTON
Most motorists have heard stories of MOT
testing stations that offer MOT tests as loss
leaders and then receive a bill for a small
fortune to put any defects right; there’s no
chance of that at weonlymot.
Boughton was the first branch to open in
February 2007 as MOTMax. Following the
success, the business has progressed to
open a further seven branches, offering
the first and only outlets to ‘ONLY do
MOT’s’ in the East Midlands area. In 2011
the company re-branded to weONLYmot
and made the Boughton branch the ‘hub’
of the operation. Boughton includes the
central booking office as well as being the
head office. All customer enquiries come
to here for all eight branches. Weonlymot
wanted to keep the head office at our
number one branch to give something
back to the town that helped start it all.
Mob: 07769 701999
Tel: 01623 860708
Weonlymot would like to say ‘Thank
you’ to everyone in the Roundabout area
who has helped to support us since the
beginning, without you weONLYmot.co.uk
could not have survived, let alone grow the
way it has.
Weonlymot offer an unequalled approach
to MOT testing and have a unique selling
point, they don’t repair or service cars, they
think it is of vital importance that the public
know this. We operate the business in strict
accordance with the VOSA ‘best practice’
policy, and we monitor the performance of
all our MOT testers very closely.
Michelle Fretwell, Marketing Manager,
says “Customers may rest assured that
an MOT with us is completely honest, we
have no interest or ulterior motive in failing
vehicles to gain repair work; in fact, given
that we offer a ‘no pass/no pay’ deal on all
cars under ten years old and part-payment
over ten years, we actually WANT our
customers’ cars to pass first time.
Recently, Weonlymot launched a collection
service at several branches including
Boughton. “People told us they are time
starved these days, so this service can
provide additional convenience and
continues to build good relationships
with our customers and that’s ultimately
what we want,” Michelle said. Free MOT
reminders of when tests are due are also
part of their service.
Craig Cavener, Sales Manager, said
“Over the years and as the business has
grown, success has meant elements of
our business have often been mimicked
but weONLYmot remains Ollerton and
surrounding area’s only genuine MOT
only testing station and aims to continue
offering our unique way of testing to ensure
everyone gets the best possible service
and advice about their MOT test.”

ST GEORGE’S
CELEBRATION DAY 2014
Hiya Folks! Time to start thinking about
what we are going to do for the 9th St
George’s Day Celebration on Sunday 20th
April 2014!
We have a theme each year; some of
them have been ‘Slaying the Dragon’,
‘Garden on a Hat’, ‘Design a Poster for
ROB’ – and we are looking for suggestions
for this year’s theme. If you have an idea
please let us know what it is. We are
particularly interested in any ideas the
younger members of our community
might have. You can contact either
George at [email protected] or Norman at
[email protected]
We will be holding monthly meetings on
the FIRST TUESDAY OF THE MONTH
starting Tuesday 6 August at the Hop Pole
Hotel in Ollerton Village at 7.30pm and
really need some new members to keep
the Celebration Day going for years ahead,
so if you want this to happen then come
and join us to make sure it does. Come on!
Get involved in something worthwhile.

JOB APPLICATIONS
Do you have to disclose
convictions or cautions?
If an employer asks whether you have
any cautions or convictions, you may want
to check first whether you have to disclose
them. Not all cautions or convictions have
to be disclosed – only “unspent” ones and disclosing them when you don’t need
to could affect your job prospects.
There are exceptions where applicants
have to declare both spent and unspent
convictions, usually because they are
applying for a job working with children
or vulnerable adults.
What is a “spent” conviction? This
depends on how long ago the offence was
committed and what it was – you may
need to get detailed advice.
Insurance: You must inform your insurance
company of any unspent convictions,
cautions, reprimands and warnings and
convictions – even if they have not asked
for details.
Disclosure and Barring Service checks:
A job applicant (or volunteer) can now pay
a fee of £13 a year to subscribe online to
the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS)
for a portable DBS certificate. This means
your DBS certificate is kept up-to-date so
you can take it with you from one job to
the next, provided you are doing a similar
type of job. You will not have to pay for a
new criminal record check every time you
change jobs.

ODEF WORK EXPERIENCE
Ollerton and District Economic Forum
is a lottery funded charity set up to help
the people of Ollerton and surrounding
areas to find new jobs after the closure of
Ollerton Pit. Other than job hunting, ODEF
gives lots of different opportunities to local
people to learn new skills and interests in
the Feel Good Foods and Wild Sherwood
projects.
Whilst working with different members of
the staff, I got to see all the things that
happen here at ODEF, and also why they
are beneficial. On my first day, the staff
were hospitable and considerate not only
to me during my day in the office, but to all
the clients arriving there. The great thing
about the organisation is that everyday is
different. For example, one day I would be
working in the offices with Project Officer,
Carol White then another I’d go out with
Feel Good Foods Horticultural Ranger,
Tracey Goodwin, to various places in the
local community.
Bishops Court was one place we travelled
to, collecting herbs, fruits and edible
flowers beforehand. The day consisted
of a herb workshop for the residents, the
smelling and identification of different
herbs, a mint tea tasting of home-grown
mints and cake decorating with edible
flowers. Later on, we helped the residents
spruce up their quad with various flowers,
herbs and mints of their own. Once the
activities had come to a close, nothing but
good feedback was voiced back to us by
the staff and the residents.
We also went to Crompton View Primary
School in Bilsthorpe, to weed and plant

the year 1/2 garden. The children enjoyed
using the equipment to weed and plant the
vegetables, so much so that they wanted
to know when we’d be back!
OLLERTON VILLAGE
RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION
The Feel Good Foods project is all about
encouraging people, young and old, to
grow their own fruit and veg and lead
a healthier lifestyle. It is free to join and
is open to anyone who would like to get
involved. Similarly, the Wild Sherwood
project encourages outdoor activity and
environmental awareness. The scheme
helps people who are currently unemployed
by offering volunteering placements and
work experience in Sherwood Forest.
A number of picturesque gardens in Ollerton
Village were open for public enjoyment
on 23rd June for a small fee which went
towards worthy charities supported by the
Rotary Club of Sherwood Forest.
Open Gardens Day
It’s not just me who thinks that the work
going on here is excellent; many of
the clients that come here looking for
employment also have nothing but good
things to say.
“Considering that ODEF is a small office
dealing with a population of Ollerton and
Boughton during a recession has been
a remarkable achievement. The staff are
most helpful and considerate to whoever
goes up those stairs. Keep up the good
work, and that the right people take notice
of your good work” – Anonymous.
ODEF also run a work club every
Thursday between 9.30am – 12noon and
1.00pm – 3.00pm. It is an informal, drop
in facility where people can undertake job
search, check the jobs boards and share
experiences with other job seekers. ODEF
staff are on hand to provide support and
answer any queries you might have.
I enjoyed my time here for work experience,
I have found the facilities welcoming
and the work they do here to help all the
unemployed that come in outstanding. The
more I watched and took part, the more my
knowledge grew about the organisation
and how beneficial these projects are. It’s
organisations like this that are helping the
UK fight against unemployment.
Don Brown and Colin Etches served a
tasty BBQ at the Open Gardens Day
Programmes for the event were sold
on the morning from a stall in the car
park opposite the Hop Pole Hotel. At
the same time several students from the
Dukeries Academy organised a raffle with
the proceeds going towards their Camps
International Tanzania experience in
2014.

with Alex Lawless, captain of the Year 6

a big thank you.” The team proudly wear
the track suits on match day which are
emblazoned with Gascoine’s ‘G’ motif.
The team has recently enjoyed several
local derby matches against Forest
view Junior School which have caused
considerable interest along the lines of
the Manchester United v Manchester City
derby games. Well we’ve got our own
football stars in Ollerton who’ll soon be a
match for Robin van Persie!
Dukeries Festival of Sport
Team Ollerton Primary got into top gear on
12th July for the Dukeries Academy Sports
Festival organised by Miss Jones, Mr
White, Miss Watson and their magnificent
team of Young Leaders. A party of fifty
children from across Key Stage 1 and
2 took part in a whole host of sporting
challenges and were presented with gold,
silver and bronze certificates.
Year 6 Residential Holiday
Year 6 enjoyed an exciting residential
holiday at Robin Hood’s Bay between
the 2nd and 5th July. Ethan and Brandon
share their holiday news with readers.
“Year 6 had a magnificent experience at
Robin Hood’s Bay. The youth hostel they
stopped in was called the Old School
House. The experience was amazing and
included fossil hunting, kwik cricket, sand
castle competition and rock pooling. We
visited Scarborough and went on the slot
machines. The food at the youth hostel
was great. The views out to sea and
scenery were heart stopping.”
Sherwood Forest Visit
On July 15th Key Stage 1 classes, Elm
and Sycamore, went in search of Robin
Hood. A coach and minibus pulled into the
Sherwood Forest Visitors Centre on a sun
drenched Monday morning when shorts
and cool drinks were the order of the day.
Firstly, we watched a DVD introducing
us to the legend of Sherwood. Lots of
other schools must have had the same
idea too as the Forest was full of young
super sleuths on the trail of Robin. We
walked through the majestic splendour
of Sherwood Forest to the impressive
Major Oak which drew gasps of “how big”,
“there’s Robin’s house” and “does anyone
live in there now?!” Along the route we
admired the many intricate carvings and
also produced our own artwork in the
style of Andy Goldsworthy using leaves,
twigs, bracken, feathers and stones.
Several children spotted the unusual Stag
Headed Oaks with stout branches in the
shape of antlers. We sat and enjoyed an
open air picnic in glorious sunshine near
to the statue of Robin Hood and Little
John. Several children hope to learn more
about Sherwood’s local outlaw when they
visit the Robin Hood Festival during the
summer holiday.
Alex, Lewis and Harriet at

Pirate Island
Children in Willow class and Butterfly
class enjoyed taking part in the production
of Pirate Island run by the Partake Theatre
Company, Nottingham.
The children
dressed up and acted out the journey to
several different islands using the treasure
map as a guide. Eventually they found the
buried treasure and could return home as
very rich pirates!

SAM’S LOSS MAKES HER A
WINNER!
because it’s so important that we have
empathy and a real understanding of how
it feels to be overweight and to lose weight.
I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t nervous when I
went to the group that first time, but I soon
realised that we were all there for the same
reason – because we were unhappy with
our weight and wanted to do something
about it.
A local slimming group leader who helps
her members to slim down each week
reached the finals of a competition for her
own inspiring weight loss success.
Like all Slimming World Consultants
Sam, who runs a Slimming World group
in New Ollerton, has lost weight herself
with the club and that transformation won
her a place in the finals of the Consultant
Slimmer of the Year 2013 competition. She
was one of just 48 Consultants from all
across the UK and Ireland to bag a place
in the finals.

Sam, Before and After
Sam, 29,
joined her local Slimming
World group at the end of June 2012 after
struggling with her weight for a number of
years and hasn’t looked back since. She
started following Slimming World’s Food
Optimising healthy eating plan: “It’s nothing
like diets I’ve tried before, it’s so generous.
I immediately loved the flexibility of being
able to choose from hundreds of healthy
foods that I could eat without having to
weigh or measure my portions and I’ve
never felt hungry. All my family enjoy the
same meals – they barely even notice
they’re eating healthily – and even when
we eat out there’s always something I can
have and stay on track because Slimming
World has helped me to learn how to make
the healthiest choices.”
After losing 3 stone 9 lb and reaching her
target weight of 10 stone 7 in February
this year, Sam decided to train to become
a Slimming World Consultant herself
because she wanted to help other people
in the community to change their lives
in the same way that she had. Now she
supports slimmers at her group in New
Ollerton, which is held every Monday at
7.30pm at St Paulinus Community and
Church Hall, Briar Road, Church Circle
(even on Bank Holidays).
Everyone was so friendly, I was welcomed
in and was treated with such understanding
and the utmost respect. I always remember
how kind everyone was to me on that first
night and every week of my journey, and
I make sure I show that same care and
respect to all of my members.
“The training I received and still receive
from Slimming World in both nutrition and
the psychology of slimming is absolutely
second to none and there are great rewards
for building a successful group and helping
lots of members, but nothing beats the
satisfaction I get from helping people to
lose weight and change their lives. I truly
believe I have the best job in the world.”
Sam’s weight loss put her in the running
for Slimming World’s Consultant Slimmer
of the Year 2013 competition, which was
open to all of the club’s 3,500 Consultants
who have lost weight in the last 12 months.
She attended the finals at the club’s head
office in Derbyshire on Sunday, June 2nd
and was presented with a certificate and
gift by Slimming World’s Managing Director
Caryl Richards. Unfortunately she wasn’t
the overall winner of the competition.
The New Ollerton Slimming World group
is held every Monday (including Bank
Holidays) at 7:30pm at St Paulinus
Community & Church Hall, Briar Road,
Church Circle. Everyone’s welcome and
anyone who’d like to find out more can
visit www.slimmingworld.com or call
Sam on 07923945974.

HERE TO HELP!
At Edwinstowe and the Dukeries Lions
Club meeting on Thursday 24thJune
members were given a presentation by
Toby Nadal who is a 16 year old Bilsthorpe
lad diagnosed with an epidermoid cyst at
the base of his brain. This can never be
completely removed which means that
he will need operations to reduce its size
throughout his life. Toby is now raising
money for Teenage Cancer Trust in order
that a special ward can be built at the QMC
especially for teenage cancer patients so
they do not have to be put in the children’s
ward. Toby pointed out that when he was
in the children’s ward he was asked if he
wanted to watch children’s programmes
such as ‘The Magic Roundabout’ or
‘Bob The Builder’, neither of which really
grabbed him! To raise funds Toby is going
to cycle from John O’ Groats to Land’s
End between 27th July and 9th August. Our
club gave a donation and is circulating all
Lions clubs on his route asking for their
support. Toby had already raised £3,000
and at the time of writing this sum has
increased to over £4,000 with donations
from Oakhampton Lions, Nailsea Lions,
Birchwood Lions and of course Edwinstowe
and The Dukeries Lions. We are expecting
this to increase dramatically as more Lions
clubs come on board.
We have also donated money to enable a
Bilsthorpe lady, who has terminal cancer,
to go on holiday with her four teenage
sons to give them a break together. The
club has also given funds to the National
Search and Rescue Dogs Association.
On Thursday 4th July 30 Lion members
and guests attended The Red Gate public
house in Mansfield for an excellent dinner
at the conclusion of which outgoing Lion
President Tony Pink presented his chain
of office to incoming Lion President Jon
Yarwood. Tony thanked club members for
their support during his year and hoped
that they would renew that support for
President Jon and help to raise even more
funds for charity.

ROTARY CLUB OF
SHERWOOD FOREST
A new Rotary year, a new President - Mary
Brown. We hope this year to continue
supporting local groups, organisations and
individuals within our community and also
overseas.
Have you ever thought of joining Rotary?
Join Rotary and a world of possibilities
opens up for you. The enormous sense
of achievement you’ll experience in
helping your local community and other
communities around the world is matched
by the fun you’ll have doing it. If you’d like
to “give something back” Rotary could
be the chance you’ve been waiting for.
Sherwood Forest meets at South Forest
Leisure Centre every Wednesday at 7pm.
Thanks to everyone who opened their
gardens for us on Sunday 23rd June and
thanks to all who attended and helped.
Unfortunately the weather this year was
not kind to us. It poured down with rain
which was good for the gardens but not
those looking around them! To find out

GARDENING CLUB
Ollerton Jubilee Gardening Club had a
wonderful outing for its July meeting when
lots of members visited a garden at Stoke
Bardolph owned by one of our favourite
speakers, Stuart Dixon. Stuart bought his
place several years’ ago and he has about
an acre. His passion is roses and he has
devoted most of his garden to these which
are mainly Old English from David Austin.
Particularly admired by us was Graham
Thomas, it is yellow with huge blooms and
repeat flowering well into late Autumn. We
were then treated to tea and coffee plus
great home made scones before it was
time to head back home.
We welcome a new speaker in August,
Ellen Caralion, whose subject will be
‘Creating an English Garden’, we meet in
the Jubilee Hall, Wellow Road, at 7.30 on
the 6th and it would be a great opportunity to
join us. You will be made very welcome.

towards the upkeep and development of
Walesby Lane sports ground. However,
managers Dave Winter and Steve Bodle
are working hard with all of the players and,
with everyone’s much needed support, the
lads should be able to compete with some
of the best teams in the league.
Local undertaker Paul Clampett of Ollerton
Funeral Service, Forest Road, recently
took part in a sponsored leg wax during a
series of fun days which were held at his
two funeral premises on Forest Road, New
Ollerton and Newgate Lane, Mansfield.
After much debate and consideration the
club decided to continue running an Under
19’s team which means once again the lads
will be competing in the North Midlands
Under 19’s League Division Two.
A total of £450 was raised, with the
proceeds being shared between John
Eastwood Hospice and nine month old
Ryan Black who suffers from Hypoplastic
Left Heart Syndrome, a rare condition
which causes the heart’s left ventricle to
severely under-develop.
Paul would like to thank everyone who
sponsored him, along with the following
people who gave their services for free:
Michelle Stephens – for doing the waxing,
A & C Bouncy Castles – for donating a
castle for the day, PJ Print – for all posters
and sponsorship forms, Neil and Andy
from Newgate Lane Social Club, and
anyone else connected to the events who
gave up their time to help.
OLLERTON TOWN
FOOTBALL CLUB
Ollerton Town Football Club will be hoping
that their blossoming youngsters will help
them build on last season’s 7th place finish
in the Central Midlands Football League
North Division.
The squad has been decimated with the
departures of several first team players
including Jamie Allan who has joined
Clipstone FC and the trio of Lee Easom,
James McCann and Sam Holmes who
have all left for free-spending AFC
Mansfield. Obviously this has caused a
bit of negativity around the club but at the
end of the day we are a community club,
we don’t have a financial benefactor and
every bit of money the club does raise goes
19
The responsibility of guiding the youngsters
through what will be a tough season goes
to Lee Scott and Tommy Watson who
have already shown great aptitude and
commitment. Pre-season is all about
getting players prepared for the start of a
new campaign and that’s what both men
will be working towards.
The club would also like to pay tribute to
the great job that Stuart Solomon, David
Kent and Jamie Allan did in forming the
team and moulding it into a competitive
unit. Although everyone at the club would
have liked all three men to remain in
charge they all came to a decision that a
change in management was needed.
It will not be easy for both teams and at
times things might go against us and we
will all have to show patience and tolerance
but stick with us and help your local team.

MAUN INFANT AND
NURSERY SCHOOL
Maun has been a very busy place for the
last month with so many lovely things
taking place! Our learning has been based
on the National Gallery project ‘Take One
Picture’ with the ‘Bathers at Asnieres’
being our focus. Having looked very
closely at the painting the children thought
that perhaps one of the boats on the river
might be sinking so we have built our very
own rescue boats! We have done this with
the help of our grown ups who have come
in to help on TASC day. As a special end
of term celebration we will be taking our
boats down to the River Maun to see if our
designs have worked. We will be having
a picnic lunch on our school field before
walking down to the river. At the time of
writing we are all hoping that the weather
is still lovely!
We have been very lucky this month to
have had some beautiful weather which
has allowed us to do lots and lots of
outdoor activities. Our whole school Fun
Sports was based around the Bathers
painting with water themed activities. The
most popular activity by far was the ‘Eat
an Ice Cream’ activity! Thank you to Mrs
McLafferty and Michelle our PE specialist
for helping to organise such a fantastic
afternoon and to all the parents who gave
their time to help.
Here at Maun we try very hard to look
after our environment and part of that
has included developing our allotment.
Everybody has been helping to grow
and look after the plants which is why
everything is looking so fantastic. Watering
the plants has been our favourite job so
far! Gooseberries and red currants are the
latest fruit to flourish and we have picked
some to give to our kitchen staff so they
can make a lovely fruit crumble.
Over in the Nursery children and their
grown ups have been taking part in a
gardening club which they have all really
enjoyed - a big thank you to Mrs Taylor
who has organised it. Nursery have also
had a picnic and sing a long day with their
grown ups in our lovely Nursery Garden.
Our annual Summer Fayre took place
on Saturday July 6th and was a great
success. Stalls included a bottle tombola,
face painting and even a bouncy castle.
The grand raffle was also very popular with

prizes such as a day at Center Parcs up

and wouldn’t have been possible without
the hard work of all the staff at Maun, the

donated prizes, cakes and their time to
making it such a success.
The end of term is always a very busy time,
especially as we have been starting to get
to know our new teams. We have had a
very special transition afternoon, spending
time in our new classes and creating lots
of lovely things to show our grown ups
what team we will be in next year! Our
year two children have been on several
visits to Forest View and are all very
excited to start there in September. The
children were very fortunate as they were
able to watch the Year Six performance
of ‘The Tempest’. It inspired our children
to recreate the play themselves in the
playground. Year Three pupils from Forest
View also came to visit our children to take
part in an African themed day with music,
dance, art and crafts.
Our Year Two children had a graduation
ceremony in the last week of term and
everyone worked incredibly hard to make
it a spectacular event. They learnt some
very tricky songs and we are all incredibly
proud of them for working so hard. As they
move on to their new schools we hope that
they remember just how important they all
are and continue to thrive.....
In September Maun will be welcoming
two new members of staff – Miss Beard
and Mrs Holbrook to Maun Infants. Miss
Beard will be teaching Rabbit class whilst
Mrs Holbrook will be the new teacher in
Hedgehog class. The children are very
excited to have two new teachers joining
the team!
Sadly, at the end of term we had to say
goodbye to Kath Shipley who is retiring after
25 years at Maun School. We celebrated
Kath’s quarter of a century with a tea party
in our Jubilee Garden. Although we will all
be very sad to see her go, we wish Kath
the very best and really hope she enjoys
her hard earned retirement!
Abigail Mottram and Emma Brown were
also leaving. Abigail is returning to the
University of Cambridge to study for her
Masters whilst Emma will be starting
her teacher training at the University of
Nottingham. We wish them both the best
of luck.

The girls have been doing plenty of
painting; they painted and made cute
cardboard tube owls and then painted
designs onto stones and varnished them
as Father’s Day gifts. We had a brilliant
night when Neil from Lets Get Drumming
came along and did a drumming workshop
with us. We invited girls and leaders from
Walesby Brownies too. Everyone had
a really good time. The girls spent one
meeting doing very complicated designs
with coloured beads which we then iron
to fix them together; we had princesses,
cupcakes, love hearts and butterflies. We
have planned in a walk to McDonalds and
then our final meeting of the term will be
held at Rufford Park.
If your daughter is interested in joining us

UTTERLY BUTTERLEY
VISIT BY WRIGHT BROTHERS
Mick Frearson, Ollerton.
We were delighted to meet three of the
Wright brothers when they came to Ollerton
on the 6th July. They are sons of Monty
Wright who was Managing director of
Butterley Company which sank the pit
and ‘built’ New Ollerton. They are all
monks of the Benedictine Order and Martin
was Abbott at Ampleforth. The photograph
shows some ex miners and church people
who gathered to see him at St Paulinus’
Church, where he told his life story and
read prayers.
If you are reading this it may be that you
are the person (a friend) who borrowed
a book of mine which covers the whole
history of Butterley Brick which was given
to me and many other employees by the
company and which is of great value to me.
It may be that you have, in all honesty,
forgotten that you have it. This I understand
and no animosity is shown towards you.
I look forward to its return and would be
grateful if you would contact me on 01623
862540. Thank you.
