our loyal patrons, which we believe will enhance
your experience as you visit our Branches and

voters of Montgomery County
and several private funders,
including the Kiser High School
Alumni Association, Dayton
Children’s Hospital and The
Leslie C. Mapp Foundation,
as well as anonymous
donors.

YOUR LIBRARY
It is fitting that the Electra
C. Doren Branch is the first
to demonstrate several
of the new features that
will be incorporated in
all of our new facilities.
Following the innovative
spirit of the Branch’s
We hope you recognize all these ideals and
perspectives in our new brand mark. The new logo’s
cheerful colors spark bright ideas; its unique individual
shapes are necessary to make the whole. As you
study the lines, you may see an open book, or move
between the sense of an outward journey or final
destination.
You’ll also find that we’ve completely redesigned our
website (DaytonMetroLibrary.org) to align with
our new graphic identity and offer more user-friendly
content, making your access even better. In every
way, the Dayton Metro Library is moving forward with
a new promise to our community:
We are YOUR Dayton Metro Library. We bring people
of all ages and backgrounds together to discover
new things about the world, themselves, and each
other. We are advocates for exploration, champions
of literacy, and facilitators of
positive change.
Warmly,

THE ELECTRA C. DOREN
BRANCH LIBRARY TODAY
“There is no
one in Dayton,
young or old,
who does not
know what
Electra Doren
was to the
community…
here passed
one of the
really great
women of today.”
The Electra C. Doren Branch Library
continues to serve the Old North Dayton
community today. At a glance, it appears
much as it did when it first opened 87 years
ago, but make no mistake - this is a Library for
the 21st century. The first building to undergo
renovation in the Libraries for a Smarter Future
project, improvements and updates include:

– The Dayton News,
March 5, 1927
In January, 1928, the Electra C. Doren Branch Library opened
to great fanfare in the Old North Dayton neighborhood.
Electra Collins Doren, Chief Librarian for the Dayton Library,
had passed away in March of the previous year. To honor
her, the branch she had been planning was named for her.
It remains one of the few public buildings in the
United States named for a woman.
Electra Collins Doren was an innovator in the field of
Library Science and an influential woman at the turn
of the 20th century. She held prominent offices in the
American Library Association and the Ohio Library
Association. She was an advocate for women’s
right to vote. She was a respected and
beloved figure in Dayton.
During her tenure as Chief Librarian from 1896 to
1905, the first branch libraries opened and the first
book wagon served outlying areas. She started a
library training school, only the second of its kind in
the U.S. After a major reorganization, she opened
the library’s shelves to the public for the first time.
(Previously, only library workers could access the
shelves and retrieve items for the public.)

A new outdoor reading terrace features an original
art installation, the first of the ReImagining Works
commissioned by the Library through a generous
anonymous bequest. Sculptural steel images of Dayton
landmarks by artist Darren Kall are incorporated into the
terrace walls.
“It’s an honor for us to carry on the work Miss Doren
planned for this community so long ago,” said Jonathan
Cline, manager of the Electra C. Doren Branch Library.
“It shows how libraries can change and grow over the
years, bringing the past forward and embracing the future.”
A portrait of Electra Collins Doren hangs in the Library today.
“In a way,” Cline added, “We’re all still working for Electra.”
For more information about Electra and her contributions to the
profession of Library Sciences, women’s suffrage and women’s
equality, visit the Library’s Special Collections Department.
From 1905 to 1913, she served as the first Director of
the School of Library Science at Case Western Reserve
University. She returned to Dayton in 1913 to rebuild the
collection after the devastation of the great flood.
Her collection of women’s suffrage materials,
including diaries, scrapbooks and correspondence,
is the basis for our Women’s Suffrage Collection today,
one of the largest suffrage collections in the U.S.
In 1997, Electra C. Doren was inducted into
Dayton’s Walk of Fame, and in 1999 she was
inducted into the Ohio Women’s Hall of Fame.
“While the Dayton public library will always be a monument to Miss Doren…
it will be gratifying to all of her friends to have her name perpetuated on the
newest and most modern branch library in the Dayton public library system.”

Dialogic Reading: Conversations
Pete the Cat:
I Love My
White Shoes
by Eric Litwin
with Preschoolers About Books
Researchers, policy makers, teachers and
parents agree: reading aloud to young children
is an important strategy to help them become
strong readers. But how you read aloud can
make a big difference. Here are a few simple tips
for making storytime a rich learning experience:
Find books that your child loves and
re-read them many times. Children learn
new vocabulary from the language of books
when they hear the words over and over in
meaningful contexts. If you come upon a word
you think might be new for your child, stop and
give a child-friendly definition and ask him or
her to repeat the word aloud.
Stop and ask questions about
the story as you read. Ask Who,
What, When, Where and Why questions to test
understanding. Encourage your child to tell you
the story. Young children need active experiences
when learning new things. When it comes to
language, this means they are doing the talking.
Try to avoid asking questions
that can be answered with one word.
Open-ended questions are effective: “What
is happening here?” “What do you think
Goldilocks’ mother would say about going into
the bears’ house?”
Ask questions that encourage your
child to relate their own experiences to
the events in the story. Look for books that
mirror your family activities. For example, after
a trip to the zoo, borrow books from the Library
about zoos. You’ll have lots to talk about!
When reading a book with repeated
phrases, stop and let your child fill
in the words: “Then I’ll huff and I’ll puff and
I’ll ……….” Let your child complete the sentence.
After you ask a question, wait up to
five seconds for a response. Young
children need more time to process questions
and frame their answers.
Expand on your child’s responses
by adding more information: “You’re
right, the brick house did not blow down…
a brick house is very sturdy.”

This year’s Big Read book is a lighthearted look at
love, relationships, communication and acceptance.
With a protagonist who describes himself as being on
the autism spectrum, The Rosie Project, by Graeme
Simsion, gives us a lot to talk about. Discussion
groups will gather at libraries, bookstores, cafes and
other locations across the Miami Valley this spring.
This year we’re partnering with organizations including
the Autism Coaching Team from the Miami Valley
Regional Center, the Dayton Asperger’s Resource
Network, and Marriage Works! Ohio to offer a whole
new slate of programs exploring the novel’s themes.
From strategies for coping with autism to a Literary
Speed Dating event, our programs, like the book
itself, range from lighthearted to enlightening.
