June/July 2014 Celebrating 10 Years Serving the Elwood Community On April 26, Elwood Public Library officially celebrated its 10th anniversary. Librarian Jessi Bouchelle explains the Makerbot 3-D printer to Assemblymen Lupinacci and Raia. County Legislator Steve Stern presents Director Sue Goldberg with a proclamation celebrating the library’s anniversary. Book buyers at the Friends Book Sale on May 3. Blood Drive Monday, June 16, 1:30-7:30 p.m. There is no substitute for human blood. Close to 2,000 men, women and children in our community – including cancer, transplant and surgery patients, trauma victims, newborn babies and many others – need blood transfusions each day. Blood donors must be at least 16 years old (with signed permission form), weigh at least 110 pounds, and not have donated blood within the last 56 days. If you have any questions about your medical eligibility, call Long Island Blood Services at 1-800-688-0900. Please be sure to eat at your regular mealtimes and drink plenty of fluids. Summer Reading There’s a summer reading program for everyone. Rovers – Read to Me For babies through children entering kindergarten. For every five books that are read to you, you will receive a prize. You can earn up to five prizes for a total of 25 books. Blasters – On My Own For children entering first grade through those entering fifth grade. For every two books you read, you will receive a prize. You can earn up to five prizes for a total of 10 books read. You can begin logging your books for prizes on Monday, June 30. Record your books by Friday, August 15 to collect all your prizes. Cooking the Books Cookbook Discussion Group International Travel Safety Anti-Crime Techniques & Tactics Thursday, June 12, 6:30-8:30 p.m. American citizens are traveling more today than at any other time in history. This program teaches the potential traveler to decrease the chances of becoming a victim by utilizing situational awareness, decreasing one’s target profile and employing strategic planning. This program is also great for students traveling abroad. Don Longo is a retired police officer with over 30 years’ experience in law enforcement and personal security, and he has trained and worked with agents of the FBI, the U.S. Secret Service and the Diplomatic Security Service. He is recognized as a Subject Matter Expert in domestic and international anti-crime techniques and has visited more than 40 countries. That’s why Hampton Weekends, by Ellen Wright, is this month’s cookbook selection for the Cooking the Books Cookbook Discussion Group. This cookbook offers recipes culled from the culinary traditions of Long Island. The book will be on display at the circulation desk from which you can choose a recipe and list your selection to avoid duplication. Similar to the Western card game rummy, Mah Jongg is a game of skill, strategy and calculation and involves a degree of chance. You will be playing Mah Jongg by the third session.
