The Teen Services Department
now has a great new way to
choose and enjoy your summer
reading materials. We now have
Read-alike Bags which contain
two books, and a Playaway
based on a common theme.
What is a Playaway? It is a new
format which is the simplest way to listen to an audio book
on the go. It is the size of an MP3 player and fits in a pocket or on a lanyard around your neck. Simply plug in its earphones and enjoy. No cassettes or CDs. No downloads.
There’s nothing left to do but listen. The themes of our
Read-alike Bags are diverse and contain books that are
funny, sad, thrilling and adventurous, in other words,
something for everyone. So, come in to the Teen
Department, check out the Read-alike Bags and start
reading and listening today.

Literacy Volunteers
This is what a student in the literacy
program has to say about the
Mastics-Moriches-Shirley
Community Library.
My name is
R u s u d a n
Gamtsemlidze
and I am from
Georgia
(the
country). I am
here in America
almost four and
a half years.
I was not happy with my English
and I found out that the library has
free English classes for foreign people. I decided to go there to improve
my English. The closest library to me
is in Mastic. The library is located in a
very nice building.
My English classes are on Monday
and Thursday. Monday’s tutor is
Karin and Thursday’s is Carla. They
are both very nice persons. They
have different ways of teaching us.
They are putting all their souls into
this job.
My English, I think, is now progressing. I feel I am doing better. I
like and appreciate all the personnel who work in the library helping
us to accomplish our goals to learn
better English. I like that this library
has book with tapes which help us
learn how to pronounce the words
correctly.
I am glad I am learning English
to help me improve my life in the
United States.
Literacy volunteers help adults in our
community improve their ability to
understand, speak, read and write
basic English. Being a volunteer
organization we never have enough
volunteers to go around. If you would
like to become a literacy volunteer
and change someone’s life call 3991511 ext. 214 or 215. A tutor training
workshop will be starting at the
library on September 29th.

Recently Deceased Body is Found in
Ancient Sarcophagus - Book Discussion
July 30 at 7:00 p.m. #3885
The library will be hosting a discussion of Linda
Fairstein’s mystery, The Bone Vault. There’s a party going
on at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s glorious Temple
of Dendur. Assistant DA Alexandra Cooper, off duty for
the evening, finds herself pulled aside by Metropolitan
director Pierre Thibodaux. He needs her advice – a
Twelfth Dynasty mummified princess, enclosed for eternity in a huge stone sarcophagus is instead holding a notso-mummified body of a woman many centuries younger
than her royal predecessor. Teamed with cops Mike
Chapman and Mercer Wallace, Alex must explore behind
the scenes at the Metropolitan, travel uptown to the
Cloisters and then head on to the masses of beasts and
bones at the Museum of Natural History. Somewhere
deep within the bowels of one
of these great cultural centers,
a killer may wait.
Craft
Corner
No refunds will be issued for cancellations.
Each instructor will provide a materials kit
(minus paints) with instructions. Materials
kits must be picked up within two weeks.
Copies of The Bone Vault are
available at the Circulation
Desk. Pick up a copy and join
us July 30. Refreshments will
be served.
