The Heart of the Matter…
…Our Residents
Maxine Leggott was born on January 17, 1923, in Elwood,
Nebraska to Dewey and Myrtle Smith (Steinbrink). She is a
lifelong resident of Elwood and has always been one of its
“biggest” supporters. She attended the Elwood Public School and
graduated with the Class of 1940 as Valedictorian.
Maxine Leggott
Resident of the Month
Maxine married James J. Leggott (Jimmy) on June 17, 1943 at
Fort Sill, Arkansas, where he was stationed in the Army. The
couple was blessed with three sons, Jim (Kathy) of Elwood, Gregg
of Aurora, Colorado; Rick (Anita) of Edina, Minnesota along with
the following grandchildren: Lyndsay (West Des Moines, Iowa);
J.D. (St Louis Park, Minnesota); Greggory (student at SMU);
Jeffrey (Senior) and Marie (5th grader) of Edina, Minnesota and
one great-granddaughter: Avery (West Des Moines, Iowa).
In July, 1950, Maxine and Jimmy purchased the local well and
windmill business from Charlie Smith which later became Leggott
Plumbing, Inc. The couple continued working in the business until
they retired in 1993.
Maxine always had a great love of music and it still shows today as she continues to share her talents
by playing the piano for Sunday church services at the Elwood Care Center. She started playing the
piano for the Christian Church at the age of 16. Over the years she has been choir director,
accompanist for numerous weddings, funerals and other musical events. She gave piano lessons to
many young people over the years (although they aren’t so young anymore).
Maxine’s greatest enjoyments in life continue to be her family, friends, church and her town “Elwood”.
She became part of the Elwood Care Center and Assisted Living family on June 15, 2013. We are
honored to recognize her as our April Resident of the Month.

Lola enjoys getting to know the residents, making them
smile with a kind word or pat them on the arm. Also,
the kindness and help I receive from my co-workers.
They all truly make my days happy and glad to be with
them all at ECC.
Something about ECC that people may not know is that
it is more than just a Care Home. There is wonderful
care from the nurses, great physical therapist, activities
every day, beauty shop, beauty hour, good food, good
cooks, whirlpool baths, clean rooms and laundry done
daily. There is also special entertainment at least once
a month and of course caring staff always.
Lola’s hometown is Elwood. Lola has had a sister,
Althea Schroeder reside at the care center.
Lola lost her husband, Bill, 3 ½ years ago. She has
four children-Valorie, Lisa, Jan and Keith.
She enjoys working in the yard—love my flowers,
especially tulips. She also enjoys her grandchildren
when she can be with them.
