•8 Gandy Dancer, Clyde “Ross”
Morgan, 1999; Route 66 at Old
Train Depot
In honor of the railroad laborers who laid the
first tracks and maintained them throughout
the years, sculptor Clyde “Ross” Morgan
created the Gandy Dancer. His sculpture
depicts a railroad worker circa 1882. The
Gandy Dancer receives its name from the
tools manufactured by the Gandy Tools Company that were used by the railroad workers. Working in rhythmic unison to move the
heavy rails and ties, the workers appeared
to “dance” as they worked the rails together.

Values Youth, Robin Reece,
2010; Flagstaff City Hall – North
Parking Lot
Promoting Assets with Sculpture, or PAWS, is
a Coconino Coalition for Children and Youth
project. Upon completion, a total of 40 mountain lion sculptures will be decorated to visually
depict the 40 Developmental Assets. Developmental Assets are values all young people
need to succeed. Each sculpture illustrates
one asset. This public art and education
effort highlights the work of local sculptor
Dion Wright, who created the prototype in
2009, and local artists chosen to work with
children and/or teens to paint and decorate
the sculptures. For a complete list of PAWS
sculptures, visit www.coconinokids.org.

•20 The Veridic Gardens of
Effie Leroux, Joe Sorren, 2000;
Heritage Square
Arizona native Joe Sorren has contributed
many pieces of public art in Flagstaff,
particularly the 40-foot by 30-foot mural on
the exterior of the Old Town Shoppes on
Heritage Square. The Veridic Gardens of
Effie Leroux was completed in September
2000 after nine months of work. The magical,
dreamlike pond and picnic scene features
Effie Leroux as its centerpiece. Leroux is a
fictitious character who Sorren describes
as an early 20th century philanthropist who
created “veridic” gardens as “peaceful places
for people to experience with all five senses
the possibility of a fuller life.”

•26 Puente de Hózhó Mural
(1 of 4), Bruce Aiken and students,
2008; Puente de Hózhó Elementary
School
The students of Puente de Hózhó, a
Flagstaff Unified School District bilingual
magnet school, worked closely with local
artists to create several murals displayed on
the exterior walls of the school. Each mural
visually displays a lesson the students
explored in their classes, from native
animals of Arizona to the history of Mexico.
The artists provided creative direction and
technical advice while the students provided
the brush strokes.

Mural, Redwing Ted Nez, 2010;
Route 66 at the Train Station
Artist Redwing Ted Nez, of Indian Wells,
was commissioned to design and create a
mural to commemorate the State of Arizona
Centennial in 2012. This mural is located on
the low wall below Route 66 facing the north
side of the historic train station. The 60-footlong and 5-foot-high mural depicts the day
Arizona became the 48th state. The mural is
a representation of the cultural, historical, and
natural features of Flagstaff.
