The yearbook sport and breeding is published by the German Equestrian Federation at
the end of every year. The highly interesting literature delivers information on the best
horses in Germany: The most successful German jumper, dressage and event horses are
Hanoverians!

T
he German Equestrian Federation distributes
funds the so-called breeder premium at the
end of each year. The money horses won in competition determined the compensation until 2004.
The system of giving out a certain number of points
for each rank has determined the breeder premium
for six years now. In other words placings are
awarded with points according to a code that is
determined every year. The computation period for
the yearbook sport 2010 is October 1, 2009 until
September 30, 2010. The results of the World
Equestrian Games in Kentucky were not considered.
Statistics are boring? But not this one! The equine
publication not only reveals the rankings and its
allocated points but also the lists with the annual
prize money. Germany’s most successful event
horse that also won the highest prize money is Euroridings Butts Leon with rider Andreas Dibowski.
The 14-year old Hanoverian won Euro 107,832.00
in the past season. It took only seven starts: a second place at the CCI**** in French Pau, a second
place at the CCI**** in Badminton (GB) and a
second place in the individual competition at the
CIC*** in Aachen put more than Euro 103,000.00
in the bank. What is so special about this scenario?

Euroridings Butts Leon won more money with his
annual earnings than Germany’s best dressage
horse Warum nicht FRH. This powerful Hanoverian
with his rider Isabell Werth are in the top ten with
Euro 88,417.00.
Seal of quality FRH
Three additional Hanoverians are listed in the top
ten most successful event horses. All carry the prefix of the Association for the Supporters of Hanoverian Horses, FRH. FRH Butts Abraxxas with rider
Ingrid Klimke has climbed up three placings since
last year now finishing in third position. This pair
brought home Euro 35,570.00 in 2009/2010 - for
the second place at the CCI*** and Luhmühlen
There they received Euro 23,000.00 alone! Elevenyear old FRH Fantasia with rider Andreas Dibowski
has made the jump into the top ten for the first
time winning Euro 17,810 being eighth place. German champion FRH Schorsch placed ninth with
rider Julia Mestern.

The above mentioned horses took the places one
to four in the chart of the most successful Hanoverians according to points for placings just as they
did the year before, but now in a different order.
This year’s newcomer in the ranking is the youngest competitor the just nine-year old Saaten-Unions Charlie Weld. This son of Connery galloped
into winning the gold medal at the World Championships for Young Event Horses in 2009. Under his
rider Kai Rüder Charlie Weld added among other
placings a third and a fifth place at the World Cup

The victory of the Grand Prix Freestyle in Cannes, a
forth position in the World Cup Final in ‘s-Hertogenbosch and a third place in the Grand Prix
Freestyle in Munich essentially launched Warum
nicht FRH and Isabell Werth to the top of Germany’s top breadwinners. The pair earned Euro
88,000.00. Almost half of it at the above-mentioned events alone. Isabell Werth showed stablemate Satchmo in eight competitions in four different countries. His earnings were Euro 59,000.00
being second place in the top ten.
Name, year of birth and pedigree
The third Hanoverian in the top ten horses with the
most earnings is the Halfbred Le Bo in ninth place.
This son of Lauries Crusador xx won a total of Euro
28,210.00 with his rider Carola Koppelmann. Two
of his competition highlights were a second place
at the Dressage Derby in Hamburg with change of
horses and a seventh place at the World Cup Final
in s’-Hertogenbosch.
We can find twelve new horses in the top twenty
in the Hanoverian chart including a number of
young athletes that are just starting out at the top
level. The now eleven-year old Dablino by De Niro
ridden by Anabel Balkenhol was most successful.

He won the Media Cup 2009 and earned a silver
medal in the Grand Prix Special at the German
Championships 2010. The acceptance into the
championship cadre was a logical consequence.
On the chart he´s in forth place.
Desperados by De Niro is in tenth position. The
premium sire from the December 2004 licensing
had an impressive season with rider Falk Rosenbauer. He placed in the final of the Nürnburger
Burgpokal in Frankfurt as an eight-year old and he
won the qualification for the Media Cup in Hagen
and shortly thereafter the 50th Dressage Derby in
Hamburg as a nine-year old. Kristina Sprehe has
been presenting Desperados since the end of last
year. The pair won the short Grand Prix with more
than 70 percent at her first public show appearance in Ankum a few weeks ago. The youngest
Hanoverian placing in the top twenty is the now
9-year old Renommee by Rotspon. He placed in
the final of the Nürnberger Burgpokal with rider
Jessica Werndl as a seven-year old. The pair has
collected good placings at ten additional dressage
competitions since then. These three examples allow us to be hopeful for the future of Hanoverian
horses in the sport of dressage.
Gotha takes off
You should follow the example of Marco Kutscher
and his Holstein mount Cash if you want to make
a lot of money competing in jumper competitions.

at four selected stations of the Global Champions

the Grand Prix of La Mandria in Italy. Cash and
Kutscher lead the ranking of top ten jumpers with
Euro 340,491.00. Goldfever’s daughter Gotha follows in second position with Euro 251,883.00.
Ludger Beerbaum is Goldfever’s poster child´s rider. For comparison: Last year both horses had no
more than Euro 35,141.00 in their pocket book!
Beerbaum presented his young chestnut mare on
sixteen top jumper shows. They finished the World
Cup Final in Geneva in second place, won the
Grand Prix of Stuttgart and placed second at the
Nation Prize of Aachen.
Checkmate is the second Hanoverian in the ranking according to earnings. The 2010 German
Champion won Euro 167,660 with his rider Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum increasing his life-earnings to Euro 1,8 million. Stakkato’s 11-year old
daughter Souvenir follows in third position with
rider Philipp Weishaupt in the list of the top twenty
most successful Hanoverians according to ranking
points.
Several young pairs celebrated their first time in
the listing of the best within the group of Hanoverian jumper experts. Celle’s state stud sire Satisfaction by Stakkato with rider Eva Bitter placed seventh with 15,110 ranking points followed by
another licensed sire, Codex One. This son of Contendro advanced with his rider Karl Brocks to the
Hanoverian Jumper Championship for six-year olds
in 2008 and now as a nine-year old stands his
ground in the most difficult jumper competitions.
Lissaro successful
The German Riding Federation determined the
Oldenburg Fürstengruss to be the most successful
horse in base and introductory classes. The Hanoverian stallion Lissaro van de Helle by Lissabon is
the second best youngster. The success is based on
Lissaro winning the silver medal at the World
Championships in Verden and gold at the Bundeschampionat. World Champion Edward Gal has
been preparing the bay athlete for upper level
competition for a few weeks now. Another Hanoverian placed third: Soliere by Sandro Hit with Eva
Möller. The pair earned silver at the World Championships as well as at the Bundeschampionat. n

Three- and four-year-old prospects from the Hanoverian Program for Jumper Horse
Breeding met to compete against each other in the free-jumping competition for the 15th
time. The judges witnessed an overall good 2007 vintage. Via Odessa D by Valentino/

inety-one horses were entered; seventy-five
accepted the challenge and competed in front
of the judging panel consisting of german federal
trainer Heinrich Hermann Engemann and auction
manager Dr. Günther Friemel. The majority of the
participants in this free jumping competition did
not descend from one individual sire as it was only
a few years ago. The result in 2011 with Valentino,
For Pleasure, Lazio and Graf Top as sires proves
that Hanoverian jumper horse breeders have excellent alternatives with respect to the selection of
stallions. It is not the stallion alone that produces
a good jumper. It is the stallion in combination
with a suitable mare.
We noted with great interest that only eight of 91
entered horses do not go back on a Hanoverian
dam line. Combine this fact with the observation of
pedigrees in the lists of placings and one will notice that pure Hanoverian pedigrees are on the increase. The Hanoverian jumper horse breeding
gets a more and more Hanoverian face again. Especially when strength, power, a strong back and
soundness are called for Hanoverian genetics
come to the forefront.
Brilliant success
The lead was taken by the very last horse to finish
in the first division. Via Odessa D by Valentino/Graf
Breeding
Grannus is the half-sister to St.Pr.A. For Odessa
(through embryo transfer) the winner of the jumper mare class at the Herwart von der Decken-Show
in 2010. Via Odessa D descends out of the dam
line of Klaseta that is fostered by the Decker family
in Bierbergen and which has produced the worldclass sire Grannus. Via the dam Gesa by Graf Grannus Via Odessa D is provided with a great blood
connection to this dam line. She convinces with her
athletic appearance and her athletic attitude. She
fulfills the tasks placed in front of her with courage
and self-confidence. She shows quick reflexes and
the desirable reaction after having made a slight
jumping mistake. With high scores for style, ability
and overall impression Via Odessa D set a standard
for the first division that wasn´t topped that day.
She became Champion of her age group in 2011
shortly after winning the Herwart van der DeckenShow 2010 in August. This was just a brilliant success for breeders Ludwig and Lutz Decker and a
confirmation of their breeding program. They were
very delighted about the special prize: a free
breeding to Grey Top donated by the State Stud
Celle. Valentino, the sire of Via Odessa, presented
his first four-year old vintage at the free-jumping
competition in Verden. His offspring made a good
impression especially with respect to ability.
Forbes is the first foal out of Linda Jansen´s breeding program; his dam successfully competed in
jumper competitions up to M-level. What an entry
into the Hanoverian breed! This year a foal by
Goldfever is expected.
The Breeding Club Hildesheim-Peine was not to be
beaten in the first group. The second placed horse,
Canberra PJ by Cassus/El Bundy (breeder/owner:
Horseszucht Dr. Jacobs, Bierbergen), also came
from this breeding club. This mare showed a lot of
ability and the necessary keenness to jump. Although she still has a lot of maturing to do her
performance in Verden allows for a hopeful future.
Third place-winner La Coco bred and owned by
Yvonne Sander from Radderstorf appeared as a
modern mare with an energetic push-off and a
good technique at the fence. She descends from
Lordanos/Ginsberg. Another interesting and powerful jumper in this group also descendes from
Ginsberg placing a close forth behind La Coco.
The winner of the third group descends from the
dam line of Jubelflöte. It is not very widespread yet.
His performance ability is well secured though
through Argentinus and Grannus in his pedigree.
The largely framed gelding by Lazio/Silvio out of the
breeding program of and owned by Bernhard
Menke from Lengerich embodies positive radiance
with his beautiful interior. His good and strong back
allows for a good and powerful jump. This also applies to St.Pr. A. Cashmarna MOH by Cashman/Fly
High out of the breeding of Roman Roszkiewicz,
Bersenbrück. Johannes zur Lage is the exhibitor of
this energetic and ambitious mare that finished in
second place. Bred out of a good dam line that has
also produced Nation Prize horse Gianna (rider:
Klaus Reinacher), Cashmarna MOH’s pedigree
shows a blood connection via Cashman and Airport
to the extremely successful damline of Illythia.
Top horses close together
The competition was tough in the second group.
Accordingly the top horses were close together.
Forbes by For Pleasure/Lanthan (breeder: Linda
Jansen, Raubach) with his striking appearance succeeded in the end. He impressed in every phase of
his performance whether through his calmness
and his composure during the victory ceremony or
his intelligent, smooth jumping performance earlier on. He impressed with his strong back and his
ability to jump every fence beautifully using his entire body. The chestnut impressed the most with
one attribute, his presence. He never allowed for
any doubts to arise with his quiet and calm eye.
“It has to do with jumping”
The licensed stallion Quel Homme by Quidam de
Revel/Contender followed closely in second position behind Forbes. Out of Jürgen Kurz breeding
program in Frielendorf the stallion is now owned
by Klosterhof Medingen, Bad Bevensen. “This has
to do with jumping,” Dr. Günther Friemel commented on the stallion’s performance. Quel Homme jumped powerfully and carefully with a lot of
ability and the desire to never make a mistake. He
descends out of the dam line of Fairness III, one of
the best Hanoverian jumper lines and left nothing
to be desired for. Another stallion followed in third
position; Scentender by Scendix/Contender out of
the breeding program of Hans-Günter Berner from
Bienenbüttel and owned by Klaus Bünger, Oetzen.
This black stallion impressed from the first moment
onwards. Being finely built in a modern fashion he
improved with the increasing degree of difficulty
and never allowed for any suspicions to arise that
he would make a mistake.
A stallion by Quidam de Revel/Landadel (breeder:
Dieter Scherwitzki, Holdorf; exhibitor: Friedrich
Niemeyer, Petershagen) followed in third place in
this group. This stallions ability was most impressive. He jumped masterfully without ever making a
mistake. The attribute that determined his third position was the stronger back of both horses in front
of him. A strong back carries a special significance
in sport horse breeding. One of the striking horses
in this group was a full-sister to the state stud sire
of Moritzburg, Lemwerder by Lordanos/Goldfever.

forth group showing off her Hanoverian virtues.
Hanoverian virtues
Guiana by Graf Top/Chasseur won in the forth
group. An athletic mare that embodies Hanoverian
virtues like strength, performance willingness and
ability delighted the crowd with her appearance.
Bred by Willi Fritsch in Bargstedt and exhibited by
Martin Klintworth from Ohrensen, who won at last
year’s mare show in Bargstedt with a similarly dynamic daughter of Graf Top, Guiana convinced
with intelligent and masterful jumping performances. One can find the combination of G and C, in
other words the combination of the Hanoverian
bloodline of Goldfisch II and the Holstein blood of
Cor de la Bryere, weaving through the pedigrees of
successful Hanoverian jumpers like a red thread. It
was obvious once again at this free-jumping competition.
The second placed horse in this group carried the
G-blood on the damside of his pedigree. Nemo by
Now Or Never M/Godehard (breeder: Erika Tielke,
Lemgo; exhibitor: Michael Schneider, Herkensen)
was a still youthful, largely framed jumper prospect who knew how to use his body well and who
got better the more demanding the jumps became. Overall “a horse with perspective”, so Dr.
Günther Friemel. Shakira by Stalypso/Calido followed in third position jumping powerfully and
skillfully. Owner Werner Kamp from Kluse bred
this mare out of a damline with a successful jumping record.
The free-jumping competition for four-year olds
out of the Hanoverian Program for Jumper Horse
Breeding also serves as an indicator for the breeders as well as for the breed association. We saw
many interesting horses that we could conceivably
see again in a few years successfully competing on
the jumper circuit. n

a few questions after the free-jumping competition.
THE HANOVERIAN: Mr. Engemann, please
share your impressions of the free-jumping
competition for four-year olds.
Heinrich Hermann Engemann, “The free-jumping
competition was very good; we saw many ‘better’
jumper horses. We saw horses at many different
stages of development and training. These fouryear olds are proof that Hanover follows a good
path in respect to breeding jumper horses. I am
glad to leave this competition with such a good
impression.”
THE HANOVERIAN: What kind of demands
does the sport of jumping place on jumper
horses today?
Heinrich Hermann Engemann, “Ability is important
with modern jumpers, especially when they descend from blood-influenced dams. We must also
pay attention to the length of the canter stride. I
have never bought a horse just because of the
free-jumping. Free-jumping is however interesting
and one can make out a pre-disposition in a young
horse. For me the feeling whilst riding is most relevant. Furthermore type and exterior are important
selection criteria as well. Jumper horses must not
be too short, in other words, the back must be long
enough. The horses need to fit the rider size-wise.
But there are always exceptions.”
THE HANOVERIAN: How important is the
pedigree in a jumper?
Heinrich Hermann Engemann, “I never bought a
horse I could not ride while I was actively competing. I did however buy some foals a short time ago.
In this case the pedigree is very important to me
especially the bloodlines of the dam. I follow the
descendants’ development of modern jumper producers in competition. I carefully examine which
descendants successfully make the jump from the
Bundeschampionat to the international youngster
tours. It is an important clue for the heredity performance of sires. The question who has the horse
always plays a significant role however.”
THE HANOVERIAN: What is important in
free-jumping?
Heinrich Hermann Engemann, “It is important that
the horses show smooth, supple, elastic and
ground-covering trot and canter movement with
forward-thrusting energy during free-jumping. The
horses need to show good nerves and jump efficiently. We quite nicely saw that in some horses.
We certainly forgive young horses in the freejumping chute when they refuse once or make a
minor jumping fault. They have to show a good
reaction, though. Do not start free-jumping your
horses too early. A horse at the age of three or four
is sufficiently balanced and developed well
enough. Ability can be judged well however the
training under a rider is much more important. We
saw many exceptional horses in the free-jumping
competition. It now depends if they get into the
proper hands. The continued training will determine whether or not we will again see one or the
other horse under saddle in competition.”
THE HANOVERIAN: How do you see the development in the jumping sport?
Heinrich Hermann Engemann, “As a federal trainer
I wish for more contact between breed associations and federal trainers. It would allow for several young and good horses to be discovered very
early on. We have to realize though that there is no
quick success in top competition. A correct training
program takes time. Breeders often lack time, capital and a close connection to the sport. Riders
look for this closeness, though. The performance
density of German jumper horses has become thinner compared to the international one. Breeders
and riders are challenged. The associations in the
Netherlands, Belgium and France hold larger
shares in the success. With respect to horses and
training they have greatly benefited from the German system and have grown strong. The work is
cut out for us in the coming years if we want to
have top horses again. We must make every effort
to keep the good horses in Germany.”n

Heinrich Hermann Engemann
has been the federal trainer for
German jumper riders alongside of Otto Becker since 2009.
During his time as active competitor he was a member of
Germany’s international jumper team 45 times and was the
alternative rider at the Olympic
Games in Hong Kong in 2008.

Breeding program
at a high level
Heike Sahlmann and Horst Schmitz are pledged to
breeding Hanoverians on Rosenthal Farm. Their wish,
“We want to contribute to keeping the Hanoverian
breed at a high level of quality.”

Y
ou do not necessarily have to descend from an
old established breeder family from one of the
strongholds of the Hanoverian breed to be passionately and successfully engaged in horse breeding. “I had my calling late in life in respect to
horses,” Horst Schmitz explains. He can hardly wait
to talk about his newly built indoor arena and the
new stalls. Snow and cold have prevented the
building contractor from realizing his building
plans since November. The 67-year old has been
indefatigably devoted to breeding Hanoverians for
six years. He fills Farm Rosenthal with life together
with his life partner Heike Sahlmann, who is just as
enthusiastic. “I came to horses through friends
and through my wife and I was fascinated. It was
my idea to start a breeding program and now we
are entirely devoted.”

mare Daily Joy at heart.

Horst Schmitz is a man of action: He acquired Farm
Rosenthal that is picturesquely located on the pastures of the Elbe valley near Lüneburg in 2005. He
spared no costs or pains to redesign the buildings
that were built in 1985 to meet the needs of his
Hanoverian breeding program. Heike Sahlmann’s
dressage competitor Serra do Mar became the first
broodmare in 2005. This Sao Paulo/Volt daughter
(breeder: Gerhard Lyke, Uetze) had successfully
competed at the M-level in dressage. Three foals
were bought through Verden’s auction program
the same year. One of was awarded the State’s
Premium three years later: St. Pr. mare Happy-Day
by His Highness/De Niro (breeder: Ewald Grotelüschen, Wardenburg). Two mares from the elite
mare auction moved in in 2006. Twenty-two additional foals have followed since then. Today ten
mares with the very best pedigrees for dressage
constitute the foundation of the breeding program.
St.Pr. mare Daily Joy by De Niro/Warkant (breeder:
Uwe Külper, Hamburg) is the favorite of the lady of
the home. They almost lost Daily Joy through a
colic last year. “Mare lines are very important to
me. Daily Joy belongs to the renowned line of
Pille,” so Heike Sahlmann. This damline has produced more than 600 successful competitors including the jumper legend Walzerkönig as well as
the sires Lasso, Egerländer, Bertoni, Lörke and Quasar de Charry.
State’s premium aspirant Die Herzdame by De
Niro/Michelangelo (breeder: Philipp von Schöning,
Dannau) celebrated another breed success in
2010. The black filly won the class of performance
tested three-year olds at the mare show in Hohnstorf and represented the breeding club Lüneburg
on the Herwart von der Decken-Show. Donna Rosa
by Dauphin, Di Anjolie by De Niro, St.Pr. mare
French-Love by French Kiss, St.Pr. mare Happy-Day
by His Highness, St.Pr. mare Holy Bride by Hohenstein, Star-Light by Stedinger and St. Germaine by
Stedinger complement the top quality herd of
mares.
Horst Schmitz first success story was in 2002. He
had bought a foal with some friends. After the successful licensing and sale on the stallion market
the black colt by De Niro/Matcho AA found a new
home in Denmark where De Noir now is a privately owned sire successfully competing at Prix St.
Georges. “Such a success is enticing,” Horst
Schmitz remembers.
Performance willingness and good disposition
To breed Hanoverians has never been the question. “I have always ridden Hanoverians,” Heike

Sahlmann says. “Another breed was out of the
question.” Performance willingness and a good
disposition are attributes that are of utmost importance to the breeder. “Furthermore Hanoverians
lead the way in the sport of dressage worldwide
– we were totally fixed on Hanoverians right from
the beginning,” Horst Schmitz explains. The breeder couple has always felt and still feels very welcome and comfortable in Verden. “You are accepted there even as a latecomer to the breed,” Heike
Sahlmann remembers her first visits to the Niedersachsenhalle.
The breeding philosophy on Rosenthal Farm is
based on breeding old, proven and tested performance blood to modern top producers. Privately
owned sire De Niro is highly favored. “He is a very
interesting sire and proves his quality through his
offspring,” Heike Sahlmann says. She hardly ever
misses an opportunity to educate herself on horse
shows, breed shows and auctions. “Breeders must
become more careful when using young stallions.
Breeding and competition belong together; the
breed value estimation plays a significant role,”
Horst Schmitz feels confident. “After all we do not
want to breed beauty queens but performance
horses.”
“Horses must be of good type and have good
movement. There is no room for compromises especially with respect to the walk. From my point of
view as a rider, an active hind leg is important,”
Heike Sahlmann adds. “We are always looking and
talking to experienced breeders.” We rarely encounter a difference in opinion when planning our
joint breeding program. And who decides in the
end? “In any event, not me!” Heike Sahlmann says
winking.

on trails and have plenty of room for turnout on
pastures and paddocks. “It is nice when people
honor our efforts with respect to training,” the
businessman in Horst Schmitz says.
The licensed sire Lichtprinz by Londontime/Wagner
(breeder: Katharina Oltmann-Heemke, Kreepen) is
the latest addition. “I was at Verden’s licensing for
two days on my own. My original plan was to buy
an unlicensed stallion for training,” so Horst
Schmitz. “I was smitten by the chestnut and had to
bid on him. He fully convinced me during his workout on the lunge line.”
A solid foundation has been laid on Rosenthal
Farm. The marketing program will be intensified beyond the own breeding program in future. “We
have to try to put everything on an economic basis,” so Horst Schmitz. The plan is to raise the foals
and sell them as riding horses. Proper raising and
careful training are of utmost importance to Heike
Sahlmann, “Every horse deserves careful training.”
The auction record of the still young breed partnership Sahlmann & Schmitz is impressive: three foals
and one riding horse from Rosenthal Farm have already been participants in Verden’s auction program.
“It is important to me as a breeder to be able to say
that I have contributed to keeping the Hanoverian
breed at a high level of quality,” Horst Schmitz says.
“We still have to make our experiences and it will
take sometime before we really know what our
mares produce.” Heike Sahlmann and Horst
Schmitz are in full agreement on this issue and look
forward to the coming foal vintage on Rosenthal
Farm that will grow up in the new barn. n

Learning by doing
“I get up at night when we are expecting a foal,”
Horst Schmitz’ eyes sparkle. As an active hunter he
does not mind. They have acquired their knowledge and the necessary tools at seminars, clinics as
well as at Verden’s horse seminars and through
talking to other breeders. “Learning by doing is our
motto. We have had many breeders as friends who
have all helped and have offered advice,” the
breeder explains. “I only listened in the beginning
but today I can comment on breeding.” Heike Sahlmann adds, “The science of breeding horses is
very complicated. One has to experiment a lot.
There are no uniform rules but there are many different opinions.”
The Rosenthal Farm team includes two female
trainers and two co-workers that take care of the
barn and fifteen hectares of pastureland. The hors-

he start of the auction was awaited with
great anticipation. The event was remarkably well attended. About 1,200 guests from
far and near filled the seats of the Niedersachsenhalle as auctioneer Friedrich-Wilhelm
Isernhagen opened the first sale event of
2011.
Albany by Adlantico As/Contender (breeder:
Peter Broka, Worpswede) received the highest bid. She changed into Russian ownership
for Euro 40,000.00. Albany will stay in training at Verden’s training and marketing center
for the time being. The five-year old impressed with her technically impeccable
jumping style first at the selection site, auction manager Dr. Friemel reported. Albany
refers to a competition- and auction-proven
damline. Adlander out of Albany’s dam Chiq-
uita and by Adlantus As sold for Euro
57,000.00 at the 2005 fall auction. His fullbrother Askari presently competes at the Slevel with rider Tim Rieskamp-Goedeking.
Albany does not have a competition record
yet but has already impressed Verden’s clientele with her carefulness, overview and ambitious style, which she consistently conveyed
during every jumping practice.
The collection offered first-class dressage
prospects including Riesling by Rascalino/De
Niro (breeder: Edelhard Lampe, Hüde) who
opened the winter auction with head number
one. He presented himself proudly and magnificently with a striking appearance under
auction rider Phillip Ruwe during the auction

Friemel certified the powerfully moving
black-brown gelding. Riesling had already
convinced the judges at horse shows of his
qualities as a riding horse placing in riding
horse classes. He consistently delighted his
riders during try-outs through his long legs,
his moving ability in all three basic gaits and
his very good rideability.
The collection impressed with its versatility:
there was a riding horse for everybody in every
price range. The ambitious competitor as well
as the recreational rider was able to select
from a variety of horses. Dr. Schade analyzed,
“The market calls for the type of horses the
marketplace Verden offers.” This statement of
the breed manager analyzes the direction
placing trust into the breeders of Hanoverian
horses. The make-up of the modern riding
horses must be appealing. It must be equipped
with three solid basic gaits and good rideability. Correct training according to the age of the
young horse in dressage or jumping deserves
just as much attention. It pays off in the end to
invest in good basic training. During Verden’s
pre-auction training period a lot is asked of the
young horses. The horses must be physically fit
and well pre-conditioned to cope with the
training period and the try-outs when prospective buyers test the horses for suitability. It is

obvious that riding horses that clearly demonstrate their riding qualities during the training
period and are well prepared to react properly
to the rider’s aids will attract the most attention. First-rate training has a positive impact
on the auction outcome.
The winter auction concluded with an excellent price structure and proves that the collection was ideal for the market demand: Five
horses sold for prices between Euro 4,000.00
and 7,999.00, twenty-two horses between
Euro 8,000.00 and 10,999.00, twenty horses
between Euro 11,000.00 and 14,999.00,
twenty-three horses between Euro 15,000
and 24,999 and twelve horses for more than
Euro 25,000. The top price of Euro 40,000 is
not an extravagant amount but signals a
healthy and balanced price structure in all
categories. It allows breeders and exhibitors
to look favorably towards upcoming sale
events. Once again we are delighted about
the very good export rate of 50 percent. Russia and France were the strongest foreign
buyers with seven horses each.
The course a sale event will take depends on
the quality and the training of the riding
horses to a large extent. The market place
Verden can only offer what breeders bring to
the selection sites for evaluation. The circle
closes in Verden and encourages studying the
selection schedule for the next auctions to
find the most suitable time frame for presenting future auction candidates to their best
advantage. n
