These words especially speak to us this year. When you come to Temple for the High Holy Days, our old education building will be coming down, and construction of our new building and lobby will have begun. There will be many rocks in the form of concrete rubble all around. Yet the vision of a new education center for 21st-century Jewish learning is surely the promise of “honey from the rock”—the image the psalmists so beautifully created in words. This school year 5776 our ECC and Religious and Hebrew School programs will take place off site. We will return to our renovated and reconstructed home in the fall of 5777, and what a sweet reunion it will be! We ask for everyone’s patience and understanding during construction. We can teach great things to our children throughout this year. We are not called The Wandering People for nothing! In the coming months, we will experience the incredible, satisfying progress of fulfilling our vision for the future, and we will learn the power of L’Dor Vador, “from generation to generation,” as a timeless value. With this renovation and reconstruction project, how we teach and communicate that value, and other Jewish values like it, will get a 21st-century upgrade. You will notice that other updates are also taking place at Temple. We hope you have had the chance to explore our newlyredesigned website, which features our new logo. The new logo also appears as part of the new cover design of Hakol. The logo, a Star of David made up of layers of vibrant color, suggests movement and vitality, and reflects Temple’s identity as a place of progress, reform, and vibrancy. In the coming months, we will use this symbol in various ways on many of our communications with you. This September we set in motion much that will be new, even as we hold fast to the traditions that sustain us from year to year. For example, on the first day of Jewish learning, there is a tradition of spreading honey on the top of a student’s book for him or her to lick off as they turn each page— to make learning sweet and strong enough to stick. Change is difficult, but it can teach our children—and us—the strength of cooperation, the patience of planning for a better future, and the knowledge that being a community is truly where our hearts reside. The boulders that greet you this year will give way to classroom walls and lobby windows by next Rosh HaShanah, and in these new spaces the sweetness of Jewish learning will give new meaning to the psalmist’s promise of “honey from the rock.” L’Shanah Tovah, Rabbi Marcia A. The main entrance to Temple Israel for the High Holy Days will be the Emerson Avenue entrance (up the beautiful stairs leading into the sanctuary). • How will the construction affect parking? • Free valet parking will be available. The Temple parking lot will be reserved for valet-parked cars only. • If you do not plan to use the free valet, please plan to park on the street. • The alternative accessible ramp entrance for those with mobility concerns will be located in the alley, across the street from Caribou Coffee. • • The Fremont (parking lot) entrance and portico will not be available for use. To access the valet service, please drive south on Emerson Avenue from 22nd Street, and turn right into the alley. The other entrances to the parking lot will be closed. • In order to maximize parking space in the Temple lot during construction, the valet service will be parking cars in a different pattern than usual. For this reason, only valets will park cars in the Temple lot—no one will park their own car. • If you have mobility concerns and would like to be dropped off, please use the alley entrance. Your family can drop you off at this entrance and then park on the street, or the valet can park your car for you in the Temple Israel lot. • Limited shuttle service will be available; locations and details will arrive in the mail and be viewable on our website. How can I watch the livestream of the services if I am unable to come to Temple? To watch the video broadcast of High Holy Days services, please go to www.templeisrael.com and click the box that says, “View Our High Holy Days Services.” For a list of which services will be broadcast, please see page 3. Temple clergy and staff are planning every detail to ensure that your High Holy Days experience is as peaceful, worshipful and stress-free as possible. Please call us with your questions or concerns: (612) 377-8680. 6 h a k o l Construction Highlights: August & September • Construction site fence installed • New pedestrian walkway and mobility access ramp added • Fremont entrance and outer lobby closed • Portico removed • Education wing demolished For more detailed construction updates, please visit our website, www.templeisrael.com. Nefesh Ne’ilah Service Wednesday, September 23, 3:45 p.m. Those who have remained in Temple throughout the day of Yom Kippur have felt the power of Ne’ilah, the closing service. We come to Ne’ilah with our final pleas for forgiveness from God and gather communal strength to embrace the year ahead. Our Nefesh Ne’ilah features Temple’s innovation of “handsfree” visual Shabbat. The prayers and songs, accompanied by our Nefesh band, enhance breathtaking photography projected onto the walls of the bimah and bring harmony and fellowship to our beautiful closing worship experience, Havdalah, and the conclusion of our fast. Please remain in the sanctuary after Yizkor for a lovely finale to Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the Jewish year. We will also celebrate the theme of birth and renewal with a special ceremony for babies born since last Rosh HaShanah. If you’ve had a baby or grandchild since last Rosh HaShanah, please contact Mary Gail Hadley at 612-374-0315 or mghadley@ templeisrael.com for further instruction on your family’s participation in this service.
