USAC Western States/BCRA Midgets
May 16th at Kings Speedway
In only their second start together, Kody and the TK Motorsports/Team
6R Racing midget looked to have another strong run, hoping to improve upon
their second place finish at Ventura Raceway in April. The night started out
well, Kody qualified 2nd out of the 27-car field, co-sanctioned by USAC and
BCRA. In the heat race, Kody had moved quickly from 8th to 3rd when contact
with another car caused some bent parts and a 7th place finish. By virtue of his
qualifying time, Kody was entered into the special event dash of the 6 fastest
qualifiers. Starting in the back row, Kody came from 6th to 3rd, and was on the
bumper of 2nd in the short 4-lap event. In order to earn a transfer into the night’s
feature event, Kody would have to finish in the Top 7 positions of the
semi-feature. Kody won from his pole starting position, locking him into
a ninth place starting spot in the feature lineup due to an invert of the ten
fastest qualifiers. However, on the opening lap of the feature event, Kody
was collected in a three-car incident, bending the right front corner of the
axle severely, making the car very hard to steer and control. As giving up
is not an option, Kody lined up at the tail of the 22 car field and drove
forward, earning his team a respectable ninth place finish.
UPCOMING: USAC Western States Midgets
May 23rd at Ventura Raceway
TK Motorsports’ Tanner Swanson will veer off the pavement and
onto the dirt this weekend, competing in his first dirt midget event in over a
year! Don’t be fooled however, Tanner grew up racing on the dirt—and will
feel right at home in the high-horsepower, low-weight dirt midget.
While brother Kody travels to Indianapolis to compete, Tanner will be
staying home on the west coast, taking the TK Motorsports/Team 6R
dirt midget out for a spin at Southern California’s Ventura Raceway.
Tanner has run a dirt midget a few times already, in 2007 he drove at
Kings Speedway and Placerville Raceway for Northern California car
owner Cliff Blackwell. Tanner’s experience goes beyond the driver’s
seat, as he has been helping on the crew when Kody has driven the car
this year, so Tanner has already been to the racy 1/5-mile oval.

May 22nd at Indianapolis State Fair
USAC K&N Silver Crown Series
Kody will compete in the 56th Annual Hoosier Hundred at the Indianapolis State Fairgrounds this Friday
night, driving for Team 6R Racing. Last year, Kody made his USAC Silver Crown debut on the dirt mile at the
Illinois State Fair, qualifying in the Top 5 and racing his way to
a Top 10 finish. This will be Kody’s first start on the dirt mile
at Indianapolis.
This season, Kody will be chasing USAC
Silver Crown points, competing full-time in the Team
6R/Toyota powered #19 as teammate to two-time USAC
National Sprint Car Champion Brian Tyler. Kody finished 12th
in the Silver Crown season opener at Manzanita Speedway in
February, but after a three-month vacation, is looking to get
back in the action.
USAC National Midget Series
May 23rd at O’Reilly Raceway Park
After a year long wait, Kody has another chance at the Night Before the 500 midget race at O’Reilly
Raceway Park at Indianapolis. In 2007, Kody made his first start in the event, but lost an engine while running
2nd with only two laps to go! A year later, it was more of the same, Kody qualified fastest, started on the pole,
but cut a right-front tire down while running 2nd. All was not
lost, as Kody was able to get the tire changed and drive from
dead last to 4th in the 13 remaining laps! However, this year
Kody looks to break his streak of bad luck at the prestigious
midget event. He will be driving the Western Speed Racing
#60, a car he drove to victory lane less than one month ago
at Madera Speedway’s Gerhardt Classic.
USAC Rocky Mountain Sprint Series
May 25th at Rocky Mountain Raceways
Nearly two years ago, Kody drove for local car owner Jimmy Wysong at a
USAC Western States Sprint Car event. Their results were spectacular, winning
their first and only event competing together in dominating fashion. This Monday
night, in a Rocky Mountain Regional event, Kody and Jimmy look to continue
their success together, hoping to go 2-for-2 in sprint car competition.
