A decade of Magicseen highlights
Do You Remember This? A decade of Magicseen highlights by Mark Leveridge Issue 1 - March 2005 Our inaugural issue featured a cheesy pose by a very young looking Ali Cook and Pete Firman, who at the time were appearing in a magic show on Sky TV called The Secret World Of Magic. We also chose to do a big feature on Derren Brown, yet strangely we didn’t put him on the cover! No, I have no idea why either! Issue 2 - May 2005 Paul Zenon was on the cover of issue 2 and at the time he was high profile thanks to some appearance on UK TV. This was to be the first of a number of appearances in the mag for the likeable magical rogue. We also did a major piece on the Cups And Balls, giving information but also reviews of a range of associated products. Issue 3 - July 2005 Our third issue had a strong mentalism theme with cover star Marc Paul being joined inside by articles on Kenton Knepper and Luke Jermay. We also had the third instalment of a fun piece called Fighting Talk in which we invited well known magicians to defend (or otherwise) a controversial statement about magic. There was also a big feature on Card To Wallet. Issue 4 - September 2005 Andy Nyman was a friend of Magicseen’s right from the start, and we did our first feature on him in this issue. We also did the first of an occasional series in which we showcased information and tricks from a particular country. This first article was The Magic Of France which included tricks in the Masterclass from Mathieu Bich and Boris Wild amongst others. Issue 5 - November 2005 The Twins were the first big illusionists to get into Magicseen and their striking cover photo is one of my favourites. We did The Magic Of Australia to follow on from the previous French issue, and introduced another new idea with the introduction of The Dealer’s Booth, in which we gave background info on a magic dealer, in this case Practical Magic. Issue 6 - January 2006 Luke Jermay got back into Magicseen in this issue, this time on the cover. And he was in good company because we also had features on Wayne Dobson and our first major international star, Henry Evans. The Linking Rings got the detailed treatment in this issue too and the Dealer’s Booth featured Merlins, who years later were to become our sponsors. SUBSCRIBE AT: WWW.MAGICSEEN.CO.UK MAGICSEEN MAGAZINE MARCH 2015 1 Issue 7 - March 2006 Magicseen has always enjoyed TV related articles, and our cover star in this issue was Anthony Owen, whose presence on the production side of TV continues to this day. The Magic of Spain was compiled by Rafael Benatar and Alakazam Magic jumped into the Dealer’s Booth. Paul Gordon, Etienne Pradier and Jeff McBride made this a busy issue. Issue 8 - May 2006 Classy double act Shahid Malik and Lisa adorned issue 8’s cover and they shared magazine space with Richard Leigh and John Archer (who of course is everywhere!). We stretched our wings to bring you the Magic of Brazil and we had some interesting and amusing replies to a question posed in Show Us Yours - you need to read it to understand why! Issue 9 - July 2006 Celebrated ‘grumpy’ mentalist Graham Jolley is in pole position in issue 9, and this issue also has a fascinating article on the history of magic on UK TV, publishes the findings of a survey on magicians’ fees, features a major article on balloon modelling (the first article directly aimed at children’s entertainers) and The Merchant Of Magic pop up in the Dealer’s Booth. Issue 10 - September 2006 It’s not that often that magical designers/inventors get centre stage, but Paul Kieve manages it with issue 10, and deservedly so. The Magic of Austria makes it into this issue and also the first of a small series of Start Up Guides, this one being on cards. Paul Zenon sneaks back in when we weren’t looking too. Issue 11 - November 2006 Paul Daniels makes it to the cover of issue 11 proving that even the biggest names will talk to us! We take a detailed look at Book Tests in this issue, have a Masterclass that for the first time was devoted to just one performer, that being the awesome David Stone, and in Sleepless In Skopia we publish one of the most moving articles we have ever offered. Issue 12 - January 2007 He was just coming to prominence when we caught Dynamo for his first Magicseen cover, and even he didn’t know the heights that he would eventually scale. This issue also has the first of an occasional series called So You Want To Be A.... and in this instance it is...A Children’s Entertainer, with loads of practical advice from kid show workers in the UK. 2 MAGICSEEN MAGAZINE Issue 13 - March 2007 In March 2007 we published our first book, Wayne Dobson’s WD40, and to launch it we gave some extracts from the new tome in our mag and put Wayne on the cover. He was joined inside by crazy man Jonathan Goodwin and inventor extraordinaire Jay Sankey, plus we gave you a buyers guide to purchasing magic on the internet. Issue 14 - May 2007 Luis de Matos is Portugal’s best known TV magician, and we featured him on our cover several years before he created his outstanding online event, the Essential Magic Conference. This issue had the second part of our comprehensive look at buying magic online, had a guide to contact juggling and featured Nick Einhorn and Mathieu Bich too. Issue 15 - July 2007 FISM winner David Stone is a real French charmer, so it is appropriate perhaps that when he is on our cover we also feature an article on women in magic. The next instalment of our So You Want To Be A...series appears with a look at commercial close up and Paul Gordon offers a guide for how to be a good magician with just a pack of cards. Issue 16 - September 2007 The first female magician to make our cover is Juliana Chen, and in her issue we also have The Magic of Germany as one of our international articles, plus a large comedy special featuring great tips and advice from comedy pros as well as loads of great one liners. Stephen Tucker also finds himself in the Dealer’s Booth, much to his surprise! Issue 17 - November 2007 Two hugely creative magicians are featured in this issue, Jay Sankey on cover and inside Boris Wild. There is also a great article on how to bring your magic ideas to the marketplace, Jay Fortune provides one of his humorous and thought provoking Think Tank articles and Nick Fletcher recalls the Golden Age of Magic, the 1950s. Issue 18 - January 2008 What do Matthew J. Dowden, Mel Mellers, Juan Odeix, Paul Kieve and Zakary Bellamy all have in common? Yep, they all appear in the Jan 2008 issue. We also provide a start up guide to magic magazines plus take a look at how magicians are being used as entertainment on match days at professional football grounds. SUBSCRIBE AT: WWW.MAGICSEEN.CO.UK MAGICSEEN MAGAZINE 3 Issue 19 - March 2008 The Magic of South Africa is the latest international round up article to find its way into Magicseen, and we also take a look at the niche area of Bizarre Magick. We have a start up guide to how to produce magic videos for the web, and everything is overseen by cover star Geoffrey Durham, Magic Babe Ning and well known UK performer David Penn. Issue 20 - May 2008 Magic Singh lends a mystical look to our cover, David and Dania reveal how they manage to change costumes so fast, and Joshua Jay is, well, just Joshua Jay really. The classic Any Card At Any Number plot gets a thorough investigation and the second part of our article on Ning makes Magicseen look so much more attractive! Issue 21 - July 2008 Michael J. Fitch is a talented guy who not only does great magic but plays his act in character, which accounts for the ‘chavvy’ front cover. Big feature of this issue was a terific article on how to be a compere for which we brought together advice from some of the best exponents around. Issue 22 - September 2008 Marvin Berglas must be the most successful magic dealer of all time as his Marvin’s Magic business is arguably the most used way for people to get into magic. We learn more about him and the business in this issue. We also take an interesting look at the Egg Bag, and start a new mini series, The Bookshelf, looking at classic books from past decades. Issue 23 - November 2008 Shawn Farquhar graces our November cover and with good reason - he is one of the world’s busiest and best entertainers. This issue has loads of top content including a round up of visual gags, we provide tons of great help in the A-Z of Commercial Close Up, Pat Fallon advises on how to do magic for older kids, and yep, Paul Zenon gets back in again! Issue 24 - January 2009 If you’ve never seen cover star Chris Cox live, remedy that soon, because he has a really entertaining mentalism show. The January issue also goes into what it takes to work on cruises, Anthony Owen dispenses sage advice on how to get work on TV (and he should know!), and we get an insider view of Jeff McBride’s Mystery School. 4 MAGICSEEN MAGAZINE Issue 25 - March 2009 To commence our 5th year we went back to how we started, with Pete Firman (this time minus Ali Cook) appearing on the cover. Inside we also talk to Men In Coats, Peter Nardi and Craig Petty, and this issue was also a Masterclass Special edition, with six effects to learn rather than the regular two. Issue 26 - May 2009 Keith Barry arrived as if from nowhere to front our May edition, and it was great to find out what he’s been up to. This issue also features loads of information about how to publicise yourself on the web, takes an informative look at sleeving as well as provides Masterclass sleeving tricks, and we do a feature to honour Ali Bongo who sadly had just passed away. Issue 27 - July 2009 Paul R. Wilson is a real cheat - no, really, he’s an expert on scams - plus a great card magician, and we find out about his successes. The Flying Ring comes under the Magicseen microscope in this issue, we have a cuppa with Ian Keable, marvel at the achievements of Hans Klok, and provide a really unusual article related to Harry Houdini. Issue 28 - September 2009 World stars don’t come any bigger than David Copperfield so he was an obvious choice for our cover in September. In fact this issue is packed with top people including Norbert Ferre, Ben Harris and Paul Stockman, each a master in his own field. There is the Magic of Singapore too, plus the start of a mini series on fake coins by Craig Petty. Issue 29 - November 2009 A great picture featuring world famous illusionists JC Sum and Magic Babe Ning makes an eye catching cover for issue 29, and inside we feature home grown talent in the shape of Alan Hudson and Scott Penrose.
