DIRECTOR’S
MESSAGE
BRIAN SJOTHUN | PARKS & RECREATION DIRECTOR | CITY OF MEDFORD
Another summer has come and gone and the Parks &
Recreation Department wishes to thank the community
for your support in setting record attendance marks for
many of the programs and events offered. We would
also like to thank our business sponsors that helped
support such events as; Rogue Credit Union Movies in
the Park and Family Fun Nights, State Farm – Summer
Concert Series and Litha Auto Group for the activities at
Pear Blossom Park.
I would also like to recognize the work of the Medford
Parks and Recreation Foundation. This non-profit
has been providing financial support for scholarships
and park improvements since 2005. Through the
organizations efforts in the past year, the department
received a $20,105 grant to provide scholarships for
Medford children to attend programs. This funding will
provide for over 500 youth to participate in swim and
tennis lessons as well as opportunities to attend our day
camp programs. Since 2005, the Medford Parks and
Recreation Foundation has provided nearly $165,000 to
help with program registration assistance. Please feel
free to visit: www.medfordparksfoundation.org in order
to see how you may assist this group.
The 2016 Leisure Services Plan is complete and this
document provides a “road map” for the department
to follow over the next decade. As you probably know,
addressing a need for an indoor aquatic center is high
on the list of identified projects. Over the next few
months, staff will be working with the Parks & Recreation
Commission and City Council to develop a funding plan
that could utilize existing revenues to cover the cost of
construction. This would not require additional property
taxes. We hope to have a final recommendation on the
type of facility and funding plan to present to the Council
and community by early 2017.
Mission Statement
Creating Healthy Lives, Happy People and a Strong
Community.
Vision
We provide a system of attractive, safe, clean,
accessible, interconnected parks throughout the
city and coordinate a variety of passive and active
recreational activities.
MEDFORD PARKS & RECREATION: CAPRA ACCREDITED
CAPRA accreditation assures the general public, policy makers and taxpayers that MPRD delivers a high
level of quality and operates in accordance with industry standards of excellence. The City of Medford
is only the second parks and recreation agency in Oregon and just the 109th in the country to earn the
prestigious distinction. CAPRA certification is valid for five years. Benefits of going through the certification
process are:
• Formalization of operational procedures.
• Creation or discovery of operational efficiencies.
• Sharpening of the department’s focus on how to address community needs.
• Augmentation of funding solicitation and justification.

COYOTE PUPS PRESCHOOL
This outdoor preschool employs children’s natural instinct to
explore and addresses the growing evidence that being outside
lowers the risk of obesity, improves balance and agility, reduces
stress, aids healing and improves self-regulation. The program
will include opening and closing circle, sit spot, nature skills
with senses, drawing, story-time, games, and animal and plant
activities. The school’s outdoor dome provides the added bonus of
a magical shelter when the need arises or an activity that may be
enhanced by an indoor setting. Parent Day/Visits: every Friday from
11am-Noon.

OUTDOOR ADVENTURE PROGRAM
This program is for kids who want to build their relationship with
the outdoors. We focus on Nature Connection through traditional
living skills such as friction fire, shelter building, tracking,
storytelling and so much more. Our goal is for the students to
gain a relationship with the skills while feeling comfortable in
their natural world; to gain a confidence in the ever-changing
environment of nature; to feel safe with an understanding of not
only how to remain alive in the wilderness, but how to live in
harmony with the Earth and each other.

— MONDAY SERIES
Feel depressed, stuck in a rut? Wondering what else there is to life
or what you are missing? Maybe you are recovering from the loss
of a loved one or going through some major change in your life.
Maybe you just need to get clear about where you are going and
what your true path is. This is an active group based in Nature and
most of this will be outside. Learn techniques for self-awareness
and staying present, journaling, drawing, and thought tracking, to
create a venue for clarity regarding our path and the root of our
choices. We offer new and different skills so you can be in charge
of your own life and make choices based on your personal path.
It is guided by our instructors but only you can determine the
outcome.
