From Sydney to New York, this former Verdon College student travels the world in search of the next big thing in fashion. Jenna Dunne works for the fashion website thegrandcircle.com.au in Sydney and has just returned from New York Fashion Week. ‘‘It was really amazing. It’s true what they say – it’s the city that never sleeps – it’s such an exciting place,’’ she says. Calvin Klein, Jill Stuart, Karen Walker and Toni Maticevski were some of the fashion shows she attended. Part of Dunne’s job is to keep up with international fashion trends and mingle with the big names in the industry. ‘‘It was really inspiring to be there among the Anna Wintours and all the top designers in the industry.’’ The Grand Social sells 58 fashion labels on the naughty or nice Searching: Former Verdon College student Jenna Dunne is a fashion hunter and has just returned from New York Fashion Week. She moved to Sydney two and a half years ago to pursue a career as a film writer. After funding fell through for the movie she was working on, she decided to pursue her love of fashion. As a newcomer to the fashion industry Dunne had to prove herself and she started working for free for a fashion PR company. ‘‘The competition to get into the fashion industry is really tough, but I did get paid in clothes,’’ she says. It then paid off as she was offered a job working for the Grand Social in July last year. Although she now travels the world, there is still no place like home. ‘‘I miss my family, who are all in Invercargill, and I miss the space. I loved growing up there.’’ ◗ Pictured are Jenna’s key trends this summer. Beaded: Diane Von Furstenberg Spring 2010, New York Fashion Week. The 25-year-old enjoys the dynamic nature of the fashion industry and the way new trends are always evolving. ‘‘I love scouting out exciting new labels and finding hot new trends,’’ she says. Jenna also writes for the website on key trends happening around the world so attending fashion shows is an important part of her job. Other fashion shows she attended this year included the Melbourne Fashion Festival, Australian Fashion Week, Melbourne Fashion Festival and the Gold Coast Swim Fashion Week. And as always in the world of fashion, the shows can be very entertaining. ‘‘I’ve seen a few models tripping over and shoes falling off. They usually get a muffled giggle,’’ Dunne says. Although this fashion jet-set lifestyle may sound glamorous, it has been a challenge for her to get there. Former international model Tamsyn Rose (pictured) nearly missed Waikato’s first N’Style Collections Spring/ Summer fashion show on Saturday night. Rose made a surprise appearance on the catwalk in the avant-garde hair section, going on stage straight from Waikato Hospital’s accident and emergency department after suffering an allergic reaction earlier in the day. She got a rousing reception as she modelled a Gothic costume and handmade top hat from Hamilton designer Janine Carmichael, of Heathen Earth, for the fashion crowd. The fashion show – touted as Hamilton’s answer to id Dunedin Fashion Week – was a success with all 300 tickets sold. Well-dressed fashionistas came from as far as Auckland to Waikato University’s Memento Espresso for the catwalk show, which looks likely to become an annual event. The evening was the inspiration of Hamilton hairdresser Wayne Richardson. ‘‘All of the feedback so far is fantastic,’’ Mr Richardson said after the show, which was four months in the planning. ‘‘It’s going to be bigger and better next year.’’ There is already strong interest for 2010 from several bigname New Zealand fashion designers.
