TIMBERLINE Tonewoods and other special products for acoustic guitar makers NOVEMBER 2013 Grading criterion for tops Grading criterion for backs and sides What do tonewood dealers mean by ‘Grand concert’ AAAA, Master grade etc. Is it just the best wood they have in stock on the day or are there defined criterion for the grades being offered? The grading system as detailed below evolved in the tonewood department of Timberline many years ago as an attempt to clearly define quality aspects of guitar back and sides sets. I hope that it will be easily understood and that you will excuse me for using a system unique to this company. Many years ago when I was still active as a professional guitar builder there were a few German traders who graded tops just using the numbers 1 – 8 with the higher number being the best quality achievable. The tops I sell now are based on that old system. I have avoided using terms as listed above so that my grading cannot be confused with any of the less concise grades offered elsewhere. The grade that I offer are listed and defined below. AAA – Quarter sawn wood or nearly so. AA – Wood that is quartered to one edge, (where the centre joint of the back will be ), gradually straying from the quarter ending up slab sawn at the opposite edge. A – Wood that is slab sawn, the main slab sawn area being approximately half way across the board. Grade 8 – Perfection – extremely slow even growth, the widest growth ring within the template area about 1mm. Straight grain and even colour. Best possible quartering and the minimum possible run-out (short grain). The wood will be stiff with a high pitched tap tone. * - One or more asterisks may be added to the grade mark to indicate wood that is aesthetically more pleasing or desirable by virtue of colour, intensity of figure or fineness of grain. Grade 7 – Near perfection – very slow growth, the widest growth ring within the template area about 2mm. Straight grain. Very well quartered with minimal run-out ( short grain ). Stiff boards with high pitched tap tone. Minimal colour variation may be present. Back and sides sets frequently are different grades for the back and the sides e.g. AAA sides and AA back. The valuation of these sets assumes the back and the sides each represent 50% of the value of a set and are then added together. Grade 6+ – Superior – slow growth, the widest growth ring within the template area about 2.5mm. Well quartered with minimal run-out (short grain). Stiff with a high pitched tap tone. Infrequent inclusion of other quality issues, e.g. minor flame, slight colour variation etc. Most makers would still regard this grade suitable for high end work. Grade 6 – Fine quality – slow to medium growth, the widest growth ring within the template area about 3mm. Quartering and run-out should still be to a good standard and a good tap tone will still be present. Some inclusion of other quality issues, e.g. minor flame, slight colour variation etc. Ideal for less expensive instruments and student work. Back and sides sets are pre matched for colour and character. Grading for Indian rosewood sets There are some specific grading criterion I use for Indian rosewood guitar back and sides sets. AAA – Wood that is light in colour and weight. Wood taken from a higher grade having limited occurrence of small defects such as pin knot, wormholes or silica in the grain within the template area. AAA* - Wood with a reasonable to good depth of colour but having rather wild or curved grain along the length of the panels. Good weight. No pinhole or silica, Wood from the next grade up but with below par colour match. Short grain, poor quartering, fungal discolouration, resin pockets, unsightly colour variation etc. are avoided in the selection process but if and when they are present result in the board being demoted a grade or two. AAA** - Wood with a reasonable to good depth of colour and straight to nearly straight grain along the length of the panels. Good to heavy weight. Good colour match, no pin knot, worm or silica. The default top grade – faultless wood. Bearclaw and Hazelficte – Specially figure tops occasionally available at a slight premium of between 10% and 20% over normal grade prices. AAA*** - Wood with all the virtues found in AAA** sets but with distinct and fine growth lines (annual rings if that is what they are) about 2 – 3mm in width at their widest. Honduras mahogany tops – The above grading rules cannot be applied to mahogany tops. These tops will be selected as being well quartered, light weight, and with the minimum amount of interlocked grain. Parlour guitars, Mandola, mandolin and Ukelele sets can be supplied in most species from undersized guitar sets and will always be priced fairly. Soundboards Engleman spruce – Picea englemannii Sourced from Canada Classic size – 2pc 550 x 195 and up x 4.5mm Western sizes – 2pc 580 x 205 and up x 4.5mm Archtop sizes – 2pc 550 x 205 and up x 25mm – 9mm We apply the prefix letter C to classic sized soundboards and the letter W to Western ( also known as dreadnaught or jumbo guitar soundboards ). Please use these prefixes when ordering. Grade 6 Grade 6+ Grade 7 Grade 8 Classic Western £25.00 £33.00 £42.00 £55.00 £27.00 £37.00 £49.00 £60.00 Western red cedar – Thuja plicata Sourced from Canada Grade 6+ Grade 7 Grade 8 Classic Western £20.00 £27.00 £37.00 £22.00 £30.00 £40.00 Honduras mahogany – Swietenia macrophylla Sourced from Belize and Guatemala Most of the wood used in our soundboards is first manually split from the log and then sawn. This prevents short grain or run out in the soundboard pieces. The photo above is of cleft billets of Western Red Cedar prior to sawing. AAA Classic Western £38.00 £40.00 Alpine spruce – Picea abies Sourced from Germany and Austria. Grade 6 Grade 6+ Grade 7 Grade 8 Classic Western £43.00 £56.00 £71.00 £92.00 £48.00 £60.00 £78.00 £98.00 Archtop Grade 6 Grade 6+ Another typical tonewood delivery to Timberline. £95.00 £115.00 Sitka spruce – Picea sitchensis Sourced from Canada Grade 6 Grade 6+ Grade 7 Grade 8 Classic Western £25.00 £33.00 £42.00 £55.00 £27.00 £37.00 £49.00 £60.00 Archtop Grade 6 Grade 6+ Grade 7 £65.00 £80.00 £100.00 OK, to be honest, this would be a more normal delivery. Back and sides sets Cypress – Cupressus sempervirens – 600kg/m3 Western size backs 2pc 560mm x 205mm and up x 4mm sides 2pc 830mm x 120mm and up x 3.5mm Classic size backs 2pc 530mm x 190mm and up x 4mm sides 2pc 780mm x 100mm and up x 3.5mm Sourced from Italy Bubinga – Guibourtia demeusei – 880kg/m3 Source from Camaroon Classic AA AAA £70.00 £95.00 The wonderfully fragrant and resonant wood traditionally used for flamenco guitars. AAA AAA* Classic Western £27.00 £38.00 £30.00 £40.00 African Ebony – Diospyros crassiflora – 1050kg/m3 Sourced from Nigeria Bubinga is a very strong and naturally stable wood a little denser than Indian rosewood. The colour is orange red, often nicely veined in darker red, and interlock and block mottle figure are common. The texture is finer than that of Indian rosewood requiring less grain filling. It’s a better quality wood than the price would indicate making it useful for keenly priced instruments. AAA* Cocobolo – Dalbergia retusa – 1100kg/m3 Sourced from Mexico Classic Western £175.00 £195.00 African ebony is very scarce in the sizes required for guitar back and sides sets and is therefore seldom offered. We have been able to intercept and prepare a small number of guitar sets in this timber while cutting large stock of billets for other purposes Macassar ebony – Diospyros celebica – 1090kg/m3 Sourced from the Celebes islands Classic Western A £80.00 £90.00 A* £100.00 £115.00 AA £105.00 £120.00 AA* £140.00 £160.00 AAA £140.00 £160.00 AAA* £170.00 £195.00 Cocobolo is one of the most esteemed and desirable species of rosewood and is endowed with the special beauty that is expected from the best of this genus. It is multi coloured when fresh maturing to shades of deep red brown and is stable and very close textured. The premium status it has as a guitar maker’s wood is well deserved but it does need a little extra care when gluing. All prices are plus vat Classic AAA* with 3 or 4 piece backs £170.00 Only small lumber size can be got these days so these last few sets are offered with 3 or 4pc backs only. Clearly not ideal but a small price to pay to utilise this outstanding timber. Malaysian ebony – Diospyros spp – 1000kg/m3 Old Cuban Mahogany – Swietenia mahogany Sourced from Indonesia AA* AAA* Original source Cuba – 750kg/m3 Classic Western £140.00 £170.00 £150.00 £185.00 This scarce timber has been marketed for some years in the USA as Malaysian blackwood. A reliable and stable wood lacking the brittle nature of some other types of ebony. More subtly coloured than other striped ebony species coloured mainly black on dark brown but occasionally including dark green tones. Produces a very fine sounding instrument according to feedback from many buyers. The very deep colouration can be reminiscent of the very dark old growth Brazilian rosewood seen on fine vintage instruments. Lacewood – Platanus hybrida – 670kg/m3 AA* AAA* Classic Western £135.00 £170.00 £150.00 £185.00 A rare survivor of a bygone age. This stock is genuine old stock Cuban grown mahogany sourced from hoarded stocks that very occasionally become available to the market. Exports of this timber effectively ceased long before an export ban was applied in 1948. Here say evidence from the sellers indicate an age of more than 100 years for this lumber and the surface grime and patina on the surface of the boards bears this up. Cuban mahogany is much denser and smoother textured than Honduras mahogany. It is ultra stable, finishes beautifully and is a joy to work. Many top makers appreciate the sweet sounding instruments that this fine timber produces. Sourced from London, England Cuban specie Mahogany – Swietenia mahogani Sourced from India, Sri Lanka and Java. – 700kg/m3 AAA AAA* Classic Western £35.00 £50.00 £40.00 £55.00 An interesting option for those who prefer to use home grown timbers. Creamy white in colour with a distinct medullary ray figure in brown. A similar density to sycamore therefore implying a similar warm sound to the instrument. Apparently sourced from opposite the Rolls Royce garage in Berkeley square London W1 should timber sourcing be important to you. All prices are plus vat AA* AAA* Classic Western £45.00 £60.00 £55.00 £70.00 Cuban mahogany is so highly esteemed that for a couple of centuries or so it has been planted in many other countries around the tropical world. The oldest trees are very hard to find but yield very good wood for guitar making a fraction lighter in weight and colour than mahogany from the West Indies. Honduras Mahogany – Swietenia macrophylla Bird’s eye Maple – Acer saccharum – 800kg/m3 Sourced from Guatemala and Belize. 600kg/m3 AAA AAA* Sourced from Pennsylvania, U.S.A. Classic Western £40.00 £50.00 £45.00 £55.00 This is the authentic mahogany that has been used as a tonewood for a very long time. Avoid all imitations. It’s tricky to source at the moment but we think it’s well worth the effort. Occasionally 20 – 30 year old stocks of Brazilian mahogany become available and these are usually available as back and sides sets at a slight premium. A* A** A*** Classic Western £50.00 £90.00 £125.00 £55.00 £100.00 £140.00 Bird’s eye maple has been well regarded by guitar makers for hundreds of years and it produces a fine sounding guitar of singular beauty. It is also a departure from the ‘everything must be quarter sawn’ school of guitar making because bird’s eye figure only displays properly on slab cut faces. Brown heart and other colouring and streaks are avoided but might be found in a limited way in grade A* Figured Old Honduras mahogany – 600kg/m3 Original source Belize Bog Oak – Quercus spp. – 910kg/m3 Sourced from East Anglia AA* AA** AAA* AAA** Classic Western £70.00 £95.00 £95.00 £125.00 £80.00 £110.00 £110.00 £145.00 Another relic of a bygone age. This stock was sourced at the same time as one of the hoards of old stock Cuban mahogany that also appear in this catalogue and therefore might also be around 100 years old. These rare old stock hoards owe their existence to a number of factors. In many cases it is because the wood was so highly esteemed and the owner could not bear to use the wood on a job that did not justify it. I take the view that a well built guitar is a very good use of these fabulous old stocks. AAA* AAA** Classic Western £130.00 £155.00 £140.00 £165.00 Inky black to very dark brown and with a significantly higher density and hardness than ordinary oak, bog oak was created when prehistoric forests were submerged under water and silt in anaerobic conditions thousands of years ago. Fiendishly hard to get through the drying process but reliable and stable when done. A handsome dark and dense timber for guitar building producing good quality instruments. When carbon dated, bog oak from this source was found to be 5300 years old. All prices are plus vat Steamed Pearwood/Rippled Pearwood Honduras rosewood – Dalbergia stevensonii Pyrus communis – 800kg/m3 Sourced from Alpine Europe. AA AA* AAA AAA* 1050kg/m3 – Sourced from Guatemala and Belize. Classic Western £45.00 £59.00 £59.00 £75.00 £50.00 £65.00 £65.00 £85.00 Steamed pearwood is an extremely stable, fine texture dense timber that is treasured in continental and alpine Europe for woodwind and stringed instrument construction. Both plain and figured versions make instruments of great beauty because of the unique colour the steaming process gives the wood. Amazon Rosewood – Dalbergia spruceana – 1050kg/m3 Original source Brazil. A AA AAA Classic Western £85.00 £125.00 £160.00 £95.00 £140.00 £180.00 This is not the same as the fabulous and famous rosewood from Brazil that has been banned from international trade. It is from the same genus and therefore has some of the same virtues. The colour is rich chocolate brown and dark. It is mostly plain in figure and is a little denser than Indian or Rio rosewood. These sets have been cut from scarce old stock boads probably from the 1980’s. Logs are never very large in diameter so most backs will be A or AA grade. All prices are plus vat A A* AA AA* AAA AAA* Classic Western £70.00 £100.00 £100.00 £130.00 £130.00 £165.00 £80.00 £110.00 £110.00 £145.00 £145.00 £180.00 We have successfully offered this back and sides choice for more than 20 years as an alternative to Indian and Rio rosewoods. Honduras rosewood has a long history of use as a tonewood and is also a first choice timber for Marimba keys and a popular and successful timber for woodwind instruments. Indian Rosewood – Dalbergia latifolia – 880kg/m3 Sourced from Kerala, India AAA AAA* AAA** AAA*** Classic Western £39.00 £50.00 £68.00 £90.00 £42.00 £55.00 £72.00 £95.00 Indian rosewood became the standard wood of choice for fine guitars when the availability of Rio rosewood began to wind down in the 1950’s and 1960’s. C. F. Martin and co famously changed over from Rio rosewood to Indian rosewood in 1969. Indian rosewood grows to larger sizes than most Dalbergias and well produced quarter sawn sets and value for money are the norm. The supply and export of Indian rosewood is comprehensively and strictly controlled by the Indian government and future availability looks good. Santos rosewood – Machaerium scleroxylon – 950kg/m3 Sourced from Bolivia. A A* AA AA* AAA AAA* Ripple sycamore/maple - Acer pseudoplatanus and Acer campestre – sourced from England and Europe. Classic Western £45.00 £50.00 £50.00 £70.00 £70.00 £90.00 £50.00 £60.00 £60.00 £75.00 £75.00 £95.00 A very successful rosewood substitute also known as Pao Ferro and Morado. Dense and close textured, easy to finish and producing good sounding instruments. Also rather famous for producing a skin allergy and so we advise use it only if you have worked it before without any ill effects. AAA* AAA** AAA*** Classic Western £45.00 £60.00 £90.00 £50.00 £68.00 £100.00 Once again a simple pale and bland timber often considered a ‘weed’ by forest owners in this country is elevated to become a timber with true world class status through the presence of ripple figure. A timber in the luthiers repertoire for centuries Wenge – Millettia laurentii – 880kg/m3 Sourced from the Congo Pommelle Sapele – Entandrophragma cylindricum 640kg/m3 – Sourced from West Africa AAA A* A** A*** Classic Western £65.00 £100.00 £155.00 £70.00 £110.00 £170.00 Pommelle is a rare and highly prized form of figure technically very similar to the equally rare and highly prized quilted figure sometime seen in American maple ( acer macrophyllum ). It would be hard to find a better example of how special figure in wood can elevate the humblest of wood to the utmost of ‘bling’. It really is unusual for solid pommelle to escape the attention of veneer cutters and this is therefore a rare offering indeed. All prices are plus vat Classic Western £55.00 £60.00 Many very good makers have been turning their attention to this timber because it has an extraordinary tap tone. Necks Type ‘A’ Here are four different neck options in three different woods reflecting the most popular ways neck components are put together. Neck blanks are accurately cut from selected timber and meet the standards required for hand built instruments. I hope that the new range of lamination pieces will inspire some eye catching decorative effects in neck production.
