Page 5 13th Sunday in Ordinary Time NO BARRIERS TO CHRIST Outreach Ministry By Patricia Cunningham Several months ago a new outreach ministry entitled “No Barriers to Christ” was introduced in our Holy Name of Mary (HNM) parish. Our ministry, which was created to provide support to our Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) brothers and sisters, their families, friends and supporters, was initiated by an email I sent to Father Rich thanking him for a particular sermon in which he spoke about ministering to parents who were struggling to accept that their children were gay. I had not attended Mass in years. I had left the church when I could no longer tolerate the hateful messages I was hearing from our clergy about gays. You see, I have one wonderful son who happens to be gay. I felt I had to choose between my church and my son. I chose my son. I believe it was Divine intervention that drew me to attend that Sunday service at Holy Name of Mary the evening Father Rich gave this particular sermon. He spoke of a loving God who made each of us in His image, perfect in every way, and who places no conditions on His love for us. His message was of love and inclusiveness, of the importance of being nonjudgmental and that it is not necessary for us to be forced to choose between our church and our children. After receiving my email, Father Rich invited me to meet with him, and he asked if he could publish my letter in the Sunday bulletin. He also asked if I would be interested in helping to form an outreach ministry for our lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender brothers and sisters. I agreed to both of his requests. I was subsequently introduced to Charlie Martinez, Director of Pastoral Care, and Jenny Naughton, one of the founders of the LGBT outreach ministry at St. Dennis in Diamond Bar, who Queen of Peace Rosary Group Healing Mass Schedule ON THE DAYS WHERE NO PRIEST IS LISTED, WE WILL MEET FOR ADORATION, ROSARY, CHAPLET AND PRAISE AND WORSHIP BEGINNING AT 6:45 PM Please Join Us! Jenny is now a HNM parishioner. We three, under the guidance of Father Rich, worked to establish the first LGBT outreach ministry at Holy Name of Mary. Our ministry is entitled “No Barriers to Christ” because we believe that no one has the right to place artificial barriers between an individual and Christ. At our monthly meetings, held at 7:30 p.m. every third Wednesday of the month at Holy Name of Mary, we provide a welcoming, loving and safe environment where we pray and share our individual stories, experiences and struggles. This is my story. In the coming months, we will be asking other members of our program to share their stories with you. We begin each of our meetings by saying the following prayer. NO BARRIERS TO CHRIST PRAYER Divine creator and all-encompassing and loving Christ who created us all with equal and sacred worth, we give you thanks and celebrate our wonderful diversity. Give us the confidence to accept ourselves as you created us, in your image, special, unique and perfect in every way. Grant us the grace of healthy pride to follow our own inner light. Be with us in all our struggles against those who would harm or denigrate us for our differences. Give us the strength to stand against the ignorance that promotes condemnation and grant us the patience to return hatred with love. We believe that no one exists outside of the heart of God, and we believe in your heart transforming power. We pray that you touch and bless, and change the hearts of our families and our clergy who still struggle with acceptance of our differences. We ask that you bless our Holy Name of Mary Parish and this ministry, and make it an instrument to lead your people who have left back to you. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, through the intersession of our Holy Mother, Mary. This goal is consistent with the Creation Sustainability Ministry of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and the St Francis Pledge. Everyone talks about doing their best for the environment, but deep down, on a personal level, four questions pop up. 1. I know we should do something, but I barely have time to do my real job. How can I find the time to help save the environment? 2. There are so many higher priority things that need immediate funding around here, what do we have to “give up” in order to save enough money to do the “right thing” for the environment? 3. I’m just one person, what good can I do? 4. Even if I had the time, resources and inclination to help, this whole “saving the environment” problem is so huge, where would I start? The four short answers that we’ll continue to expand on are: 1. Share the problem with the youth you serve 2. Long-term environmental sustainability will simply be the result of better choices now, not by “giving up” something important to us. 3. Nearly all the most important works in the world started with an idea shared by one person 4. Start with easy-to-do choices such as turning off unneeded lights and keeping light fixtures and lamps clean. We can all find productive ways to reduce energy consumption and save money! Excerpts from 77 Ways to Save Money and Energy from the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, by David A, Troesh, LEED AP We have been approached throughout this past year about the possibility of serving gluten-free hosts at our Saturday and Sunday Liturgies. Thank you. where he was going, not on where he had been. It has not changed with our modern farm equipment today. In other words, the secret is to look forward, and to assure that you are going in a straight line. Looking back invariably made the person plowing lose focus. That is Jesus’ point to us. As good stewards we must keep our focus on Him, on following Him, and on being His disciple. That allows us to move toward our goal of holiness and of being the kind of disciple He wants us to be.
