welcome to gala week 2015
Our magical week is once more about to start on the 5th July 2015. Hopefully this year will
be every bit as good as in all the previous successful Gala weeks.
We have even more events than ever, so please come along to join in all the fun. We
want to see a really large turnout, the more people appear, the more money and support
the traders can give to local charities, such as The Lifeboat, Age Concern, St. Andrews
Ambulance, YMCA and The Local Scouts etc. Any surplus funds will go towards the purchase
of additional Xmas lights.
Can I take this opportunity to thank all my helpers, organisers and most importantly, all my
many friends who have worked so hard in order to make this one of the best Gala weeks
ever ?
I would also like to give a very sincere thanks to all our sponsors, a very special thank you to
our main sponsor, Graham Baird of Belhaven Brewery. Is it any wonder that Belhaven Best is
the number 1 selling beer in Scotland ?
Finally, have a wonderful 2015 Summer, please come down to Broughty Ferry, I look forward
to seeing you all again.
Gerry Stewart
Chair Person, Broughty Ferry Community Gala Committee.

St James – The Friendly Ferry Church
2015 is the 125th birthday of St James. Starting out in 1890 as the Beach Mission Church, then
becoming the Beach Chapel of Ease in 1899, the Beach Parish Church in 1907 and finally St James

Church and Hall will be open during Gala Week for Rest, Relaxation and Reflection. The Sunday
Services at 11am on 5 and 12 July will be very family focused and during the week the Church will
be open from noon to 4pm for quiet Reflection and in the Hall you will be able to Rest and Relax
with a free cup of tea/coffee or cold drink. A special Golden Monday Café will take place on 6th
July with the usual delicious afternoon tea and chair exercises. This is especially for those eligible
for a ‘bus pass’. It starts at 1.30 and the Hall is fully wheelchair accessible. The members and
friends of St James would like welcome local Ferry residents and Gala Week visitors to join them
during the week.

YE AMPHIBIOUS ANCIENT
BATHING ASSOCIATION 1884
CHARITY NUMBER SCO40107
Ye Amphibious Ancient Bathing Association has been an integral part of
Broughty Ferry for over one hundred and thirty years. The club can proudly
boast to having club members from well known businesses in Broughty such as
Gillies House Furnishers, Goodfellow and Steven Baker’s and Coullie the Joiner
in their swimming ranks for as far back as 1900.
Today the club has a membership of Ninety and we have a thriving indoor section at St John’s
High School on a Friday evening from 6-8pm new members always welcome.
Ye Amphibious Ancient Bathing Association will provide swimmers with a supportive
environment for personal growth and provide them with first class training opportunities to
reach their full potential. Overall we aim to encourage a passion for open water swimming and
welcome everyone to our events. Please look at our website especially the Frequently asked
Questions to give you further insight into the club.
Our outdoor season began this year on the 19th
April and the day was very successful with several
new members joining for the first time all with the
aspiration to swim across the Tay.
The club has charitable status and it is hard work to
keep the club and premises on the harbour going .
We are extremely fortunate to have the wonderful
support of Broughty Ferry businesses who invest in
our New Year Day Dook programme. The Dook
is our biggest fundraiser and has become well
established over the last twenty year’s.
We are always looking out for volunteers especially
boat handlers to accompany our swimmers on the
river. If anyone is interested we would love to hear
from you please contact www.yeaaba.org.uk or
call 01382775312.

the rules
Broughty Gala Week’s legendary Window Guessing Competition, first started way
back in 1932, and the rules are exactly the same today! All the participating shops and
businesses are members of The Broughty Ferry Traders’ Association, and have displayed
in their windows an article which they do not sell. The object of the competition is for
young people (under 14) to look at the windows and discover what the ‘odd’ article is. For
instance in the Baker’s shop you might find a teapot or in the newsagent, a paint brush.
Remember, sometimes it will be hard to spot, but children should not go into shops and
ask for clues! The participating shops have a Red Diamond with a number on it in their
window, which corresponds to the number on the entry form on the following page.
