Roseville Lodge #222, Free & Accepted Masons Trestleboard June 2011 From the East Greetings brethren, We have embarked upon a process to reconnect with a large number of Entered Apprentices and Fellow Crafts on our roster. Some of these Brothers have been with us since the 1970’s and have not advanced. The last three Masters of this Lodge have directly addressed the issue with some progress, but it still remains. These Masters have called these individuals and had letters written to them inquiring as to status and how we can assist them. I have formed a Candidate Coaching Committee, led by the Senior Warden to offer ways of providing the necessary assistance to our Brothers to see their successful rise to Master Mason. Part of the process includes selection and training of individual Candidates Coaches who will be assigned an individual to mentor. Several of the seated officers have stepped up to serve as coaches in an effort to advance our Entered Apprentices. We are excited to extend the hand of Brotherly Love to those who want to advance. I know that some others will remain on the rolls indefinitely, and our lodge must accept responsibility and take the steps necessary to ensure our candidates are successful in their endeavors. Another way we are going to cultivate our candidates is by using a process to know the applicant better. We now invite candidates to attend the monthly stated meeting dinner so that a number of members can meet and get to know him, and personally witness his willingness to be a member of our lodge. And what better way can anyone think of than by breaking bread and sharing our fellowship with a friend? Not only will we be able to build a friendship before the application is filled out, but we will be able to give the applicant a good idea of the effort required for him to become a Master Mason. It isn’t helpful for us or the candidate to initiate him only to see him become discouraged because he didn’t know what to expect! On that note, I look forward to sharing that fellowship with you at dinner before the next stated meeting. Thank you to all. Bob Williams June 6, 2011 Master 2011 6:30 PM: Lodge Dinner (all welcome) 7:30 PM: Stated Meeting roseville lodge 222 Sound in the South This month I will again present some historical information that many of the readers may not know. As many of you know, Masonry began in its modern form on June 24, 1717 with the formation of the Grand Lodge of England. The Grand Lodge of Ireland was created in 1725, and that of Scotland in 1736. Some lodges that had previously been in existence resented some of the “modernizations” implemented by these Grand Lodges (such as the Third Degree), and formed a rival Grand Lodge on July 17. 1751. This competing lodge added the moniker “ Antient” (ancient) to their title. These two branches finally reconciled and united to form the United Grand Lodge of England in 1813. However, each branch had already exported itself to the United States. This is why some American jurisdictions are “Free & Accepted Masons” while others are “Ancient Free & Accepted Masons”. The oldest jurisdiction on the European Continent itself is the Grand Orient de France. This is generally considered an irregular lodge because they accept atheists. Generally speaking, Grand Lodges and Grand Orients do not recognize each other. Hopefully you have gained a little more light about Masonry! More details about Masons Night tickets coming soon! Let’s show ‘em what Masons can do… Southeast Tornado Relief Many areas of the Southeast were recently struck by a series of devastating tornadoes. Several Grand Lodges suffered loss of life and enormous property damage. The states hit the hardest were Alabama and Tennessee. As Masons, we are concerned about the well-being of the residents of these communities, particularly our brethren and their families. Having received a request for relief from their respective Grand Lodges, the Grand Lodge of California has established a relief fund for the disasters in Alabama and Tennessee. All contributions will be sent to the Masonic Service Association of North America (MSA). The MSA will then forward all donations directly to the Grand Lodge F&AM of Alabama and the Grand Lodge F&AM of Tennessee. If your members, lodge, families, or friends would like to make a contribution, please make your check payable to the MSA Disaster Relief Fund and mail it to: Grand Lodge of California Office of Philanthropy Attn: Denise Avila 1111 California St San Francisco, CA 94108 Please indicate on your check how you wish for your gift to be distributed (Alabama or Tennessee). If no designation is made the funds will be divided equally between Alabama and Tennessee. If you have any questions or need additional information, please contact Adam Kendall of the Masonic Service Bureau at 415/292-9137 or [email protected]. Please open your hearts to the victims of these disasters, and give what you can to help. Sincerely and fraternally, William J. Bray III Grand Master “DeMolay a Character Building & Leadership Organization” May 1, 2011 Dear Worshipful Master and Brethren, Northern California DeMolay Association is writing for their annual appeal for assistance with it leadership development program. DeMolay Leadership Conference (DLC) will be held in Sonora, CA from July 3rd to July 9th. The conference brings together young men from throughout Northern California, as well as Washington, Oregon, Texas, Nevada, Arizona and Canada. They are organized into camp “chapters” with DeMolay who are not part of their home chapter and spend the week learning how to work together, and develop the skills needed to lead their home chapters upon their return. This camp is an essential part of our youth training program. There are many youth who would benefit from what we have to offer but simply cannot afford the $375 tuition to attend. We are requesting financial assistance from lodges to see that no one is turned away who is looking for our guidance. As you are aware, DeMolay is a fraternal organization for young men between the ages of 12 and 21. Each chapter is sponsored by a Masonic Lodge and these young men will one day be your members. With the guidance of adult leaders like yourselves, they learn leadership and social skills through civic and community service. They clean local parks, participate in community wide activities like the Special Olympics and Relay for Life. This year their philanthropic project is Camp Taylor; a camp for children with heart related illnesses. Any donation from your lodge is greatly appreciated. If you have questions please contact me either by phone 510-783-3112, 510-375-3138 (cell) or email [email protected]. Your donation should be mailed directly to the DeMolay office at 34400 Mission Blvd., Union City, CA 94587. Thank you for your consideration.
