Checking your brakes before and after every trip is essential to ensuring safety when traveling in any commercial motor vehicle. Brake violations are always among the top reasons why CMVs are placed out of service every year. If your brakes are not properly adjusted, you put not only other motorists' lives at risk, but also your own! Below is a list of tips to keep in mind when inspecting your brakes: Check to be sure that your brakes are working properly before and after every trip; Inspect your airlines for any leaks, cuts, or deficiencies; Replace any linings that have worn to less than a quarter of an inch; Check to make sure there are no missing parts within the brakes; any issues should be reported immediately to be repaired before operating the vehicle; At the end of every day, bleed the air tanks beginning with the wet tank; Ensure there is not any excessive oil, which may indicate wearing parts; Measuring the stroke is the correct method to find any brake adjustment issues; Test your brakes for performance before entering the highway; Make sure that low air warning devices are properly operating; For every brake adjustment, reassure yourself they are in good working order; Only work on your brakes if you are fully trained and qualified to do so; and Never take a chance if you are not fully confident in the condition of your brakes. It is always better to make sure they are operating properly and safely before heading out on the road. Properly adjusted brakes are extremely important for ensuring your safety and others on the road. Inspecting your brakes before every trip will allow you to operate safely and avoid out-ofservice violations!
