Key Risk’s Baltimore office has worked hard not only to raise money for the non-profit organization, but to increase awareness and understanding of the value that Kids’ Chance has to the workers’ compensation industry. Key Risk has hosted numerous events over the last six years, including silent auctions, a restaurant “hop,” a night at the National Aquarium in Baltimore, and several raffles. Over the last two years, the company has focused on two main events: “A Night Out at the Baltimore Science Center,” and “Sports Night Out for Kids.” In 2013, Key Risk raised nearly $12,000 from these two events. The money is used to help fund college scholarships for the children of Maryland’s most seriously injured workers. Key Risk has been so instrumental in raising scholarship money for Kids’ Chance that, last year at the Kids’ Chance of Maryland fundraising gala, Key Risk’s Baltimore associates were honored with a Kids’ Chance Hero Award for their continued dedication and support. Special thanks and recognition goes to the extremely dedicated, hard-working and creative Key Risk Kids’ Chance committee members: Tracy Logue, Dawn Lemaster, Kathryn Willner, Roberta Zambelli, Rose Benton, Jerry Creecy and Shawn Gibson. Their leadership and commitment to Kids’ Chance helps to make many children’s dreams possible. Kids’ Chance of Maryland scholarships range between $1,000 and $5,000 per semester. Haley Plank-Collins: In 1995, while Haley was only an infant, her father, Maryland State Trooper Edward Plank, was shot and killed in the line of duty during a traffic stop on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Haley, who is originally from Salisbury, MD, moved with her family to West Virginia. Haley graduated from Hedgeville High School where her noteworthy athletic and academic accomplishments included being an active member of the softball team and the National Honor Society. With the scholarship assistance from Kids’ Chance of Maryland, Haley is now a “Mountaineer” freshman attending the University of West Virginia. Josephine “Josie” Grant is using her Kids’ Chance of Maryland scholarship to help her study pediatric nursing at Shenandoah University in Virginia, where she is enrolled as a freshman (fall 2013). But Josie long ago committed herself to helping sick children. Josie started her own foundation, Josie’s Smiles for Pediatrics, back in 2008 when she was only 13 years old -- with $75 she had saved up herself. She started the organization after realizing her young cousin, who had been diagnosed with a rare medical condition, had little to do while frequently hospitalized. The foundation collects toys and other activities for pediatric patients at Carroll Hospital Center in Westminster, Maryland, and the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center in Baltimore. In 2013, Josie’s Smiles for Pediatrics had already collected some $30,000 in donations for both hospitals’ youngest patients. Josie’s father, Roy Grant, was severely injured in the line of duty while working as a Baltimore City Police Officer.
