Ponder High Roar SENIOR EDITION - MAY 2014 #DONE One for the Money Valedictorian by Oksana Bekh W hether she’s solving extremely difficult math problems on the weekends for fun, golfing, or being interviewed by Dale Hansen of WFAA Channel 8 news for being the Scholar Athlete of the Week, it seems that Elizabeth Chilson is always successful in everything that she does. When she was announced the valedictorian of the 2014 senior class, everyone clapped and cheered, but no one was surprised. Anyone who knows Elizabeth knows she’s smart, but not everybody knows how hard she’s worked to get there. Taking the easy way out is not Elizabeth’s way, unless it’s a shortcut to a math problem, and she believes that the proverb, “Winners never cheat, and cheaters never win,” holds much truth. Since the eighth grade, when Elizabeth took her first Pre-Advanced Placement course, she has taken all but one Pre-AP and AP course that Ponder has to offer. She sacrificed the opportunity to be in Mr. Dierker’s Advanced World History class and witness the “Shoenami,” when she chose to remain in the TMSCA class. This amounts to eleven academically challenging courses that Elizabeth has excelled in over the course of her high school career. When you add straight A’s all through high school, junior high, and elementary, into the equation you get her weighted 4.1 GPA. Now plug in her above average SAT scores you get a valedictorian who has the honor of being named a Commended Student by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. While all of this may have been a bit unexpected for Elizabeth, this was not surprise for her teachers. “It couldn’t be more appropriate. She is a very special young lady. She’s going to do something special, and I can’t wait to see what it is,” Mr. Williams, who taught Elizabeth her sophomore and senior year, said. With her aptitude for academics, it’s not surprising that Elizabeth excels at and enjoys TMSCA, or the Texas Math and Science Coaches Association, which has been a part of her life since the sixth grade. Over the course of seven years, Elizabeth has earned an incomprehensible amount of TMSCA awards and recognitions, but her most notable accomplishment was placing first in the Calculator Applications event her freshman year. Aside from giving her a way to sharpen her math and science skills and something to do on many Saturdays, being in TMSCA has resulted in close friendships with fellow senior teammates, James Branin and Perrin Hughes. The Roar Senior Edition, page 2 The only school activity that prevails the number of years she has spent participating in TMSCA is UIL, which she says has been “a long time.” Starting sometime in elementary school, Elizabeth has been a member of the Ponder Lion UIL team. During the four years of high school, she has qualified for regionals three times and once for state. Each time was for her participation in math and/or science events. This year’s valedictorian isn’t just smart; she’s also athletic: Elizabeth loves spending her spare time golfing and playing sand volleyball. During her freshman and sophomore years she played both volleyball and golf, but focused only on golf her junior and senior years. She decided to remain a member of the volleyball family by managing the team the remaining two years. The dedication to her golf game paid off since the Lady Lions golf team qualified for region during the 2013 and 2014 seasons, and Elizabeth placed third her junior year and second her senior year as an individual. She wishes that she would have started playing golf sooner because she enjoys the sport so much, and she claims that golf season is always fun. Additionally, golf is also where Elizabeth found four other friends, fellow seniors Meredith Vedral, Emily Summerlin, Aly Stone, and Macie Simpson. They were the five and only members of the girls’ varsity golf team. Aside from school and sports, Elizabeth has been in the Gifted and Talented program since Kindergarten, is a member of the National Honor Society, and has participated in Student Government. She has served on the Student Council and is a senior class representative. Even with all of these activities and commitments Elizabeth still makes time for friends and fun. Her other friends include salutatorian Mary Cage and fellow senior Nikki Hausner. “I’ve known Elizabeth since first grade, and she’s one of the smartest people I have ever known, but she’s down to earth. I have enjoyed being her friend,” Mary Cage said. When she’s not spending time with her human friends, she can be found hanging out with her furry, four legged ones, or listening to music. Come fall, you will be able to find Elizabeth on the Texas A&M campus studying either Biomedical or Electrical Engineering. Her first year at the college is completely paid for because of her title as valedictorian, and she has also received a thousand dollars from the Denton County A&M Club to go toward her tuition costs. Aside from college, Elizabeth would love to travel, especially to “Times Square in New York City on New Year’s Eve.” She lives life by the words “Climb the mountain to see the world, not so the world can see you.” In life, her goal is to “figure out where [she] belongs and find a career where [she] can make a difference and be happy.” Salutatorian by Sterling Stinson Q 3rd Keaton Malcom 4th Meredith Vedral 5th Andie Beer “If you ain’t first, you’re last!” “Keep breathing.” “And though she be but little, she is fierce.” 6th Perrin Hughes 7th James Branin 8th Oksana Bekh “You will never live if you keep looking for the meaning of life.” “When the going gets tough, the tough get going.” “Some believe it is only Great Power that can hold evil in check, but that is not what I have found. I have found that is it the small, everyday deeds of ordinary folk that keep the darkness at bay – small acts of kindness and love.” The Roar Senior Edition, page 3 uiet and reserved, Mary Cage might come off initially as the kid who sits in the corner and doesn’t pay attention. However, she is actually the salutatorian of Ponder High School’s 2014 Graduating class. She’s a huge part of many of our school’s organizations, and can always be found participating in activities with them. Overall, she seems to be a very well rounded girl; perfect for this year’s salutatorian! Those of you who don’t talk to her too often might not know that, even though she’s quiet, she has a great sense of humor. Mary is known for cracking smart jokes and using her sense of humor in her writing and assignments. She is also very passionate about the things she loves, and is a genuinely good person. There are very few people who have gotten to know her who haven’t been influenced by her. To begin her long list of extracurriculars with one of her personal favorites, Mary actively and enthusiastically participates as a member of the Future Farmers of America. She shows Appaloosa horses, and has for as long as she can remember. She is currently leading the nation in in one of her show divisions! “I have been blessed to have much success in this, having won several horse judging contests, including the Fort Worth and Houston Stock Shows,” she said about her horse showing. In addition to the FFA, she is also, at this time, the president of the 4-H club, and a member of the National Honor Society. In her freshman year, she was a member of the student council, and her sophomore year, she was a member of the student council and the newspaper. Here at Ponder, Mary’s favorite class is her Ag class, probably in part because her favorite teacher, Mr. Lankford, teaches it. He is always there to help her, and his humor can always cheer her up. On top of that, he also always gives her great advice to help her as she finishes high school and prepares to go off to college. “Mary is an outstanding student with many talents. I will miss her next year in class and especially on the Horse team. I wish her the best of luck in her life,” Mr. Lankford said. Even with all her school work and her horse training and showing, Mary still makes time for her friends. Right down to the selfie wars and the obsession sharing, she and her best friends take time to enjoy all of friendships little wonders. “We really got close this year, but I’m glad she did. She’s my best friend. She better not abandon me when we go off to college,” one of her best friends, Macie Simpson, commented. Even though they won’t be going off to the same college, this friendship is surely one that won’t be easily cast aside. In the fall, Mary plans to be attending West Texas A&M University. At A&M she plans to study Agricultural Media and Communication, with which she plans to begin working towards her dream career: becoming a horse racing journalist, something she’s sure to be good at, given her passion for horses and her writing skills. When she leaves for college, she will greatly miss her family and friends, and how close they’ve all become over this past year. She says it will be difficult for her to move several hours away from them. It will certainly be hard to adjust to, but with holidays and weekend visits, she and her friends and family will be spending a lot more time together than she might think.
