Scandlines Hybrid Ferry
• Established in 1963
• More than 1,000 employees
• Tailor-made concept with 4 doubleended ferries and port facilities that
exactly match service requirements
• Departure from both ports
every 30 minutes 24/365
• 34,000 departures every year
• Crossing time: 45 minutes
• 2013 traffic figures:
~1,600,000 cars
~400,000 freight units

As an integrated part
of the European infrastructure Puttgarden–
Rødby serves 6 million
passengers a year with
~34,000 departures
About Scandlines Puttgarden–Rødby
The hybrid propulsion system
marks the start of a series of large
investments in environmental
technologies. 2013-2015
Scandlines will invest more
than 25 million EUR in sustainable
technologies on the route
Puttgarden–Rødby. In addition
further investments are planned
for other Scandlines routes.
pack – the system equals
approximately 600 hybrid cars
and can propel the 8,800 ton ship
for about 30 minutes without
diesel fuel.

Scandlines’ hybrid ferry is a
significant milestone because it
represents the world’s largest ever
hybrid propulsion marine battery
Scandlines is the first ferry operator
in the world to make large-scale use
of an on-board hybrid propulsion
system, which stores excess energy
in batteries. The system will reduce
CO2 emissions by up to 15 percent.
Scandlines introduced the hybrid
propulsion system in 2013 and will
implement the system on the three
remaining ships on PuttgardenRødby during 2014.

„The hybrid propulsion system on
Puttgarden–Rødby is a key element
of our strategy for more sustainable
ferry traffic. This is the first time
a ferry operator has deployed this
technology on such a scale.
We are proud that Scandlines is
taking a pioneering role in this area.
We are learning tremendously from
this, and we look forward to taking
even further steps towards zero
emission.”
Søren Poulsgaard Jensen,
CEO Scandlines
• Further energy reduction
• Further hull optimisation
• Further hybrid development higher degree electricity,
solar power
Our ambition is zero
emission, our approach is
“one nautical mile at a time”.
We invest responsibly in
tomorrow’s environmental
technology leading towards
a greener future.
So our journey continues:
Conventional ferry operation
was yesterday, hybrid
operations today and
emission free ferries
the future.
