in Bourgog
Tonnerre, its Hôtel-Dieu
and its mysterious Fosse Dionne
Discover the Fosse Dionne, spring fitted out in washhouse in 1758,
by the father of the knight of Eon. It knew how to keep secret the origin of
its spring and create numerous legends. Also visit the Hôtel-Dieu Notre-Dame
des Fontenilles where is the grave of Marguerite de Bourgogne, sister in law
of King Saint-Louis: the immense room of the patients with its extraordinary
skeleton, an astronomical instrument engraved on the ground in 1784,
the mausoleum of the Marquis de Louvois, a surprising sculpture of the Virgin
in the burning Bush and in the Child of the 16th century, as well as
an interment of the 15th century. It contains collections redrawing the history
of the medicine as well as the religious works and objects. Do not miss
the Saint-Pierre church and the hotel of Uzès, the native house of the knight
of Eon, famous secret agent of King Louis XV.
Activities : rent of bikes and strolls on the Canal of Burgundy, guided tours.
j Suggestion on a day
In Tonnerre, take the shuttle (departure in station at 11:40 am) and come
down to Tanlay to visit the castle and its museum (closed on Tuesdays).
Take advantage of the park before rising in the shuttle return towards
Tonnerre (departure at 2:00 pm). Take lunch on the spot. Begin at the station
a hike (yellow marking, duration: 3 hours). This 12 km stroll of an average
difficulty will make you discover Tonnerre and its Fosse Dionne, and will lead
you to the hillsides of vineyards of Epineuil and Vaulichère. On your return,
if you still have time, take advantage of the peace of the Hôtel-Dieu.
The castle of Tanlay
Surrounded with moats, in a very beautiful park, the castle of Tanlay is
one of the most beautiful houses of the Renaissance in Burgundy. Built
in 16th and 17th centuries, it belonged to the family of Coligny, and was at
the time of the Religious wars, an important meeting of the Huguenots’
leaders. Particelli d’Hemery, minister of the finances close to the cardinal
Mazarin, finished the work of Coligny by realising the beautiful current
set, helped by the famous architect Le Muet. Property of the family
of the marquis of Tanlay since 1705, this one completed the very rich
interior design. The room in ‘trompe-l'oeil’ and the tower of the League,
with its surprising frescoes, are particularly interesting.
Activities : golf. Every summer, the Contemporary Arts Center of the
Yonne proposes every day an important exhibition in the outbuildings
of the castle.
j Suggestion on a day
Take the shuttle in station of Tonnerre at 11:40 am and come down to
Tanlay to visit the castle, its park and its moats. Rise again in the shuttle
at 2:00 pm to join Noyers-sur-Serein and lunch on the spot. Stroll in
this magnificent medieval village and visit the old castle of Noyers.
You can prolong your visit with the tower of ramparts or visit art
galleries before taking the shuttle to come back to Tonnerre at 5:44 pm,
or spend the night on the spot.
The castle of Ancy-le-Franc
Noyers-sur-Serein, the beautiful
medieval at the edge of the Serein
This adorable little medieval village, snuggled in a meander of the
Serein, reveals its charms. From the 13th century, the castle is one of
the most powerful bastions of the kingdom: the family of Noyers
resists to the attack of Blanche de Castille. Through its turbulent
history, Noyers-sur-Serein remained a wine town. It is classified
among the «most beautiful villages in France». Visit the museum of
the naive and popular Arts, the site of the old castle, the tower of
defense of ramparts and its collection of medieval armors.
Activities : guided tours from Thursday till Sunday at 3 pm
(appointment to the tourist office), thrown of balls on July 14th, junk
store on july 17th and music festival July 10th and 29th.
Suggestion on a day
j Take the shuttle for Noyers-sur-Serein (arrived at 12:41pm) and lunch
on the spot. You can make the guided tour of the city (departure to
the tourist office at 3 pm), give a change of scenery with the museum
of the naive and popular Arts or a visit of the tower of ramparts.
End in the afternoon with a hike on the road of Meurgers and the huts
of vine (buckle of 4 or 8km available at the tourist office).
Spend the night on the spot or borrow the shuttle return towards
Tonnerre at 5:44 pm.
Masterpiece of Serlio, famous Italian architect of François Ist, this palace
the Renaissance is unique in France. Its unique architecture, in four equal
wings, forms a square completed around a yard.
Built about 1550 in the heart of a big park for Antoine III, count of Clermont
and brother in-law of Diane de Poitiers, it contains a remarkable series
of murals from 16th and 17th centuries and rooms rishly decorated.
Rare treasuries of Primatice and Niccolo dell’Abate, masters of the School
of Fontainebleau, coffered ceilings, sculptured woodwork, and beautiful
marble mosaics floors. The park drawn by André Le nôtre, was modified
at the beginning of the 19th century to become a landscaped garden.
Discover also the museum of the Earthenware factory.
Activities :
- castle: guided tours (or tape-guide), Renaissance costumes for 4-8 years
old, park, art exhibition, wine tasting, visits-concerts with Musicancy on July
24th and 28th and August 4th and 6th,
- picnic space on the port in 500m from the castle - bike renting and strolls
on Canal of Burgundy, concerts Musicancy, art exhibitions.
j Suggestion for a day
Take the shuttle in the station of Tonnerre and get off in Ancy-le-Franc
to visit the castle and its landscaped garden. Have a lunch on the spot and
visit the museum of the Earthenware factory early in the afternoon.
At about 3 pm join the tourist office and rent bikes to discover the Canal
of Burgundy. Departure on the canal in the direction of Chassignelles
(15 min) where you can visit the church of Saint Jean-Baptiste (open
from 3 pm to 6 pm) before returning to the tourist office to restore
your bikes. You can spend the evening and the night on the spot.
Le château de Maulnes
The castle of Nuits
This castle raises itself proudly on the edges of the river Armançon.
Built by 1560, it defended the catholic positions. The Renaissance
puts its mark on this military castle: the West wall, elegant and
refined with its pilasters and its pediments, was originally protected
by a strengthened surrounding wall; the East facade calls back
the military function of the castle, dominating the valley.
Inside offer a walk through five centuries of everyday life. The park,
drawn in the end of the 18th century by the architect Bertaut, eases
the beautiful house.
Activities : guided tours, path of the tracks of animals of Burgundy.
j Suggestion on a day
Take the shuttle in station of Tonnerre at 11:40 am and come down
to Ancy-le-Franc to visit the castle. Lunch on the spot. Join the
tourist office to rent bikes. Borrow the Canal of Burgundy in the
direction of Nuits-sur-Armançon from the South (in 30 min) where
you can visit the castle, before returning to the tourist office
of Ancy-le-Franc to restore your bikes. Take the shuttle return
towards Tonnerre at 5 :18 pm.
Located on the plateau of Cruzy-le-Châtel, this castle is a real enigma of the
Renaissance. With its pentagonal architecture, organized around a central
well and around an impressive staircase in spiral, this building, unique in
France, fed many legends. Built in 16th century in a subtle set of light and
water, this labyrinth is at the same time the relay of hunting of the first
duke of Uzès, husband of Louise de Clermont, the countess of Tonnerre,
and one of these big utopian architectures which mark the imagination.
Classified historical monument, this domain acquired by Yonne
Departmental Council in 1997, today in the course of restoration,
is returned to our common heritage.
Activities : Permanent exhibition in the castle, park, remarkable church with
facade of N. Ledoux, architect of King Louis XV in the village of Cruzy-leChâtel (30 min by foot).
j Suggestion on a day
In Tonnerre, rise in the shuttle and come down to Tanlay to visit the castle,
then lunch on the spot or plan a picnic in the park. Rise again in the shuttle
at 2:00 pm and come down to Maulnes to visit its castle. Take the shuttle
to return at 4:55 pm towards Tonnerre or come down to Ancy-le-Franc
to spend the night on the spot and prolong the discovery of the castles
of Tonnerrois.
