pune’s ten Bio-diversity campus of IndSearch IndSearch: Bringing the best of two worlds Institute offers global exposure and dynamic syllabi By Huda Merchant T he Indian Institute of Cost and Management Studies and Research (IndSearch), established in 1973 by a group of academicians, corporate executives and management professionals, is one of the oldest management institutes in Pune and also in India. It is recognised as an educational and research organisation by the government of Maharashtra and as an institute of post graduate and doctoral studies in management by the University of Pune. At the post graduate level, it offers a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) in Information Technology (IT), Human Resource (HR), and Marketing management – all recognised by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). “Ours is the only autonomous institute in the city whose MBA students are awarded degrees by the University of Pune,” says Dr Ashok Joshi, director of IndSearch. The ‘autonomy’ status granted by the University Grants Commission al- lows the institute to update the syllabi of courses it offers regularly and to introduce modules/programmes based on the needs of the industry and students, while the degrees awarded by Pune University give its courses respect and credibility. This way, it has the best of both worlds! What gives IndSearch a cuttingedge is the global exposure it offers. IndSearch signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with University of Wisconsin-Parkside, USA, in 2008-09. Students who have completed their MBA in IT will be eligible to undertake the MS programme of the University of Wisconsin- Dr Ashok Joshi, Director, IndSearch Parkside in Computer Science and IT, without appearing for GRE, TOEFL or GMAT. The same benefit will be extended to IndSearch students completing MBA in HR or Marketing Management, taking up the General MBA programme of the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. This year, two students of IndSearch— one each from IT and Marketing specialisations — have been admitted to the University of Wisconsin-Parkside to do MS in Computer Science and IT and a general MBA respectively. They have been given scholarship and exemptions from a few subjects to help complete the course in a year. “The exemptions have been given to our students as we have trained them on par with global requirements,” says Joshi. IndSearch programmes offer an organised, semester-based pattern that follows the grading system as per global standards. The institute has also inked an MoU with Synechron Technologies, a software development company, and URDIP (Unit for Research and Development of Information Prodmay 2014 33 Courses pune’s ten 1. Experts from these organisations exchange expertise and views with IndSearch faculty members and students and also guide students in their projects. As part of a faculty exchange tie-up, faculty members from the University of Canberra have visited the IndSearch campus to work with faculty members and students in research methodology, finance and accounting disciplines. The institute invites professionals from the industry to talk to students on the current business scenario. Last year, students interacted with senior executives from Tata Motors, Bharat Forge, Praj Industries and American Axle & Manufacturing Holdings Inc. Towards applying management techniques to socio-economic and ecological problems, IndSearch has developed a separate biodiversity campus, free of buildings. The institute has planted 600 trees of various species on this campus on the hills and has a ‘Bio-diversity Museum’ with photographs and a publication about the flora and fauna on the campus. “The idea is to make our students environment conscious,” says Dr Nachiket M. Vechalekar, dean, Post Graduate Programmes and Research, IndSearch. The institute has had a consistent record of around 70 per cent placements over the past two years. “Most of the remaining 30 per cent start their own ventures, go for higher studies or appear for civil services exams. Eventually everyone gets placed,” says Vechalekar. Incidentally, it is one of the IndSearch’s students who recently revived the German Bakery, in pune which was shut down after being destroyed in a bomb blast that killed several people in February, 2010. INFRASTRUCTURE The institute’s two campuses at Bavd- Reading room at IndSearch Library han and Law College road have classrooms equipped with audio-visual aids, workshop rooms, seminar halls, an auditorium and a library that subscribes to 150 top national and international journals and 125 e journals. The campus is Wi-Fi-enabled along with a 2mbps, leased-line internet bandwidth from Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited. The Bavdhan campus has indoor sports facility for table tennis, carom and chess. Located a short distance from the Bavdhan campus, IndSearch’s biodiversity campus has sports facilities including a cricket ground, a football ground, basketball and volleyball courts, a jogging track and a gymnasium. FACULTY IndSearch has 25 full-time faculty members; 10 of them with PhD degrees and 15 with more than 10 years of experience in the industry and academia. The institute has 35 visiting faculty members and a dedicated team of 15 guides with doctorates in financial management and cost accounting. Joshi, a PhD holder in cost accounting, was founder dean at the Faculty of Management, University of Pune. He is president of the Association of Management Development Institutions in South Asia (AMDISA) and former president of the Association of Indian Management Schools. The guest faculty list includes Dr A Sivathanu Pillai, chief controller of research and development, Defence Research and Development Organisation, government of India and founder chief executive officer and managing director of BrahMos Aerospace, and Dr Milind Sathye, a professor of finance at University of Canberra, Australia. DIRECTOR’S PLAN “We recently updated our syllabus. So there is no specific plan for the coming year. However, the advantage of being an autonomous institution is that we can modify our programmes dynamically as per needs of the changing industrial environment as and when required,” says Joshi. LIFE ON CAMPUS After classes, students take part in activities of clubs for the three specialisations of IT, Human Resources and Marketing and exchange information and discuss topics related to their fields. The clubs encourage them to engage in meaningful discussions that give them insights into the field they aspire to work in. Besides educational discussions, students engage in sporting activities including cricket, football, basketball and volleyball, and also work out at the gymnasium or hit the jogging track. They attend regular yoga classes on the Bavdhan campus and go for nature trails at the bio-diversity campus. (with inputs from Padmaja Shastri) may 2014 35
