SYLVANIA COMMUNITY ACTION TEAM Volume 9, Issue 4 NEWSLETTER Oct/Nov/Dec 2015 WHAT LIES BEHIND US AND WHAT LIES AHEAD OF US ARE TINY MATTERS COMPARED TO WHAT LIES WITHIN US. —Ralph Waldo Emerson Executive Director Discusses Marijuana Issue… Did You Know... Happy Fall! What a fast start of the new school year it has been for everyone! There are so many exciting events with each school along with all of the fall sports for all ages. But I would be remiss if I didn’t take this opportunity to remind you that even though this election year is not a presidential election year, there are important issues on the ballot that could change our world for our children as well as their future. Be Educated! Know what you are voting for or against! Read about Issue 3. Issue 3—Marijuana Legalization. *If passed we will be voting for both recreational and medicinal marijuana use in Ohio for those over 21 years of age. *Edibles with marijuana will be allowed to be purchased in the form of candy, cookies, sodas, cereals, etc. These are also prohibited for those under 21! *1,159 licensed marijuana shops will be allowed to be set up in Ohio; that is more locations than Starbucks and McDonald’s combined in Ohio. *Each person 21 and over will be allowed to grow 4 flowering marijuana plants for their own personal use. The youth plan and coordinate various events throughout the year and are the ones in charge of choosing, organizing, planning, and coordinating all the events we do. This is a great opportunity for them to gain leadership skills and organizational skills. Every meeting has an objective and the youth work in committees to focus on specific tasks each meeting. We are so excited about this new structure and we have seen immense benefits to bringing the junior high and high school students together. Come join us on any Thursday from 7-8:30 p.m. at McCord Junior High to see all the great things our Sylvania youth are doing. — Mallory Gebers, Youth Leadership Coordinator Jr. SCAT Crew News… Scat had the opportunity to attend all three Sylvania Jr. High orientation days to inform the kids, create interest, and answer any questions students or parents may have had about Jr. SCAT and all the wonderful events that will be offered throughout the year. Parents were excited to have an after school activity that offered such a positive message available to their children. New this year, Jr. High students are welcomed to participate in the High School Heart-to-Heart meetings. September was our 1st gathering of the year for the Jr. High SCAT members. We welcomed 22 students to our meetings and look forward to many more joining us for October. The topics focused on respect, selfknowledge, and self-awareness. Encouraging the kids to look at themselves and realize their value is important in empowering them to be their best selves. The students also brainstormed on different volunteer activities and overwhelmingly agreed that they would like to be involved in serving their community. We are excited to see what this year brings and look forward to continuing to grow our Jr. SCAT Crew! Connie White, Asst. Youth Leadership Coordinator Back to School Retreats Prior to the start of the school year, the SCAT youth were hard at work planning for the upcoming year. We held two back to school retreats to get the year started off in the right direction. The first one was on Monday, August 10th. The youth went through the different components of our program and outlined what was working and what needed improvements. They were asked to look critically at the different activities we did last year and set expectations and goals for the upcoming year. Another key component of the Monday retreat was to elect our officers for the year. We are so pleased to announce the executive board for the 2015-2016 school year. President of Operations: Christina Regan Vice President of Programing: Sara Jurkiewicz Vice President of Public Relations: Ariana Calderone Secretary of Administration: Danielle Chopp Financial Vice President of Fundraising: Manhattan Ethington The second retreat was held on Saturday, August 15 th. The primary focus of the retreat was to begin planning the various events the youth put on throughout the year. They went through the strategic planning framework to plan the events and map out the different components involved in each event. Groups were created so that the youth could work together to coordinate and explain their ideas for each event. These outlines and plans will be used throughout the year to better plan events and improve the events that we do during the year. Walk of Light Preparations The Walk of Light is just around the corner and the youth are busy planning the skit that will be presented at the Walk of Light. This year the theme for the Walk of Light skit is from the new Disney movie, Inside Out. The youth came up with the idea for the skit and created the entire skit from scratch. Community members will see familiar references from the movie and will be able to relate to the underlying message about making good choices and the value of good character traits. We look forward to sharing our skit with you and spreading this important message. ALL WELCOME—KIDS & FAMILIES!! Jr. High Fun Night—Friday, December 4, 2015, 5:45-9 p.m. at McCord Jr. High Volume 9, Issue 4 Info to KNOW… (continued from Pg 1) That is enough to smoke marijuana 24 hours a day for 108 days! *A group of ten individuals will have exclusive rights as the overseers to the cultivation, licensing of shops, regulation of the 10 facilities where the marijuana growing facilities will be set up, and marketing in all media venues. No municipal zoning laws can be adjusted by any community if passed. We are locked into the ballot language. KNOW WHAT YOU ARE VOTING FOR OR AGAINST! Are we setting our kids up for more issues? The more a substance is available and accessible, the use by our youth increases. Why? If a substance is made legal, the perception is: it must be less harmful. If the perception of harm decreases then the use increases. “None for under 21” for marijuana use will be just as difficult to implement as it is for alcohol for those who really want it. We know the concern we have with youth binge drinking. Do we want to add more to the concerns we have for our youth? Impact on Learning- Lessons learned from Colorado: They have three times more youth in their mental health treatment facilities since the passage of recreational marijuana. They have an increase of high school dropouts. Their drug related suspensions/expulsions increased related to marijuana violations. Don’t forget – the brain is still developing until the early 20’s. Edibles!! Who will monitor them? Will the packaging be child proof so little ones don’t eat it because it looks like a cookie or piece of candy? How much THC (the chemical that gives one the high) will be allowed in the edibles? How will they be marketed? Who will monitor that? Remember there are no federal laws to regulate or monitor marijuana because marijuana is federally illegal even if a state legalizes it. Work place? What will the impact or potential consequences be for employers? For the employees? Is marijuana addicting – YES! 1 out of 6 will become addicted to marijuana if they start using in their teens. 1 out of 11 will become addicted if they start using after 18. 90% of addictions begin in adolescence. Voting NO on Issue 3 would also prevent a monopoly of a small group of multi-millionaire investors who will own and operate ten marijuana growing sites in our state WHERE: DATE: TIME: TOPIC: DATE: TIME: TOPIC: COME JOIN US!
