the State of Victoria. Each week
Sunbury Club spotlights a different
Rotary Club in their periodical.
President John Artis received an email from Sunbury Club notifying
us of this honor.
President John Artis read a letter
from Andrea Awada, mother of
Amanda Amen, our Sisson Scholarship honoree. Letter extended
gratitude to President John as an
educator, Rotary members, and
particularly selection committee
(Rotarians Bob Ziolkowski, Jim
Thorpe, Marsha Koet, Darlene
Schoolmaster, and Jim Ives).
Amanda’s family will sponsor a
table at this year’s Share’s and
Cares Breakfast.
Program for this week’s meeting
was the awarding of the Hugh M.
Archer Memorial Scholarship.
Rotarian Lee Hollmann, chairman
of The Hugh M. Archer Memorial
Scholarship committee, introduced
audience to who was the late Hugh
Archer. He was described as a
husband and father, Dearborn
Rotarian for 54 years, Club President, District Governor, President
of Rotary International, plus an
extensive professional and volunteer service life. Hugh Archer was
an engineer, attorney, scientist,
and inventor.
Annual Hugh Archer Golf Outing
and Fundraiser and Spiratex Corporation support this scholarship.
This is the sixth scholarship
awarded. Each year the scholarship has been increased $500.
Criteria for Archer Scholarship
were then described by Lee. This
year’s 28 applicants all wrote essays on the application of the
Rotary 4-Way Test. Student’s academic achievement, community
service, honors, and other awards
were also reviewed. Lee and the
other two committee members,
Rotarians Bill Hultgren and Joe
Hallissey, unanimously agreed on
first ballot of the winner of this
year’s $4,000. scholarship.
Hussein Abdallah from Dearborn
High School was the winner. Pam
Philips, Counselor, at Dearborn
High, wrote a beautiful application
letter for Hussein, describing that
he was a lot like Hugh Archer in
business, personal interaction, and
science.
Archer Scholarship winner, Hussein, has a 4.24 GPA, is #3 out of a
Class of 354, has taken 10 AP
classes at Lawrence Tech, UMDearborn, and Henry Ford CC, and

college that Hugh Archer attended.
Lucy Peck, daughter of Hugh
Archer, then spoke. She shared
that a small town high school
teacher saw potential in Hugh
Archer, and gathered seed or
scholarship money so that Hugh
could attend a good university.
Hugh Archer graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic in 1937 with a
degree in electrical engineering.
She spoke of his desire to “pay it
forward” after others had invested
in him as a youth.
Scholarship honoree, Hussein
Abdallah, spoke and wants to pay
it forward in the future, as Hugh
Archer did. He recognized the
“force behind the boy”, his parents.

and had them re-introduce them-
selves to the Club.
