In 1983, The Korea American Scholarship
Foundation in Washington began to expand the
organization nationwide and appointed Keith
Soon Kim, who lived in the Los Angeles area, as a
director representing the Western Region. The first
step in establishing the Western regional chapter
was made by awarding a scholarship of $1,000 to
Duncan Lee, a UCLA Law School student.
1985
Keith Soon Kim, Duck Soo Kim, Sung Hong Kim, Juhee
Kim, C.J. Kim, Ho Yun Kim, Khee Park, Heung Hwan
Wee, In Sook Lee, and Jae Min Chang, who shared
the dream of nurturing the next generation, joined
together to establish a scholarship foundation in
the Western Region on April 9, 1985. On May 18,
at Woo Lae Oak restaurant in Los Angeles, the first
meeting of the Western Region was held by Keith
Soon Kim, Duck Soo Kim, Sung Ja Kim, Sung Hong
Kim, Juhee Kim, Kay Kim, Ho Yun Kim, Young Mee
Park, Sook Ja Wee, Heung Hwan Wee, In Sook Lee,
and Jae Min Chang. They decided to make up the
board of directors with married couples, named the
organization as the Board of Directors of the Western
Region, Korean American Scholarship Foundation,
142
Founding directors in 1985
and elected Keith Soon Kim as President. Duck Soo
Kim and Juhee Kim were elected as Vice Presidents,
and C.J. Kim as Executive Secretary.
They decided that the Western Region would cover
California, Arizona, Nevada, Colorado, Oregon,
Washington, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico,
Utah, Alaska, Hawaii, and Wyoming and that the
scholarship recipient selection criteria would be
the same as that of Washington headquarters.
Mr. Myung Han Kim, an old timer of Los Angeles’
Korea Town and father of President Keith Soon Kim,
contributed $10,000 to establish a chair scholarship
Western Region
for science and engineering students. The act was
a big encouragement for the newly established
Western Region.

2005 marked the 20th anniversary of the Western
Region and the scholarship award and fundraising
banquet was held at the Los Angeles County
Museum of Art (LACMA) on April 20. Han Kook
Heritage Foundation which procured and developed
the collection of Korean art to be exhibited at the
Los Angeles County Museum of Art co-hosted the
event. Keith Wilson, Chief Curator of Asian Art at
LACMA, gave congratulatory remarks and 70 college
students and 5 high school students were awarded
scholarships. This year, many past scholarship
recipients stepped forward to become donors,
thereby creating a new vision for the foundation’s
future called the “Recipient to Donor” (R2D)
program. This was a particularly exciting addition
to the scholarship program which had primarily
relied on community’s support.

2008
On May 24, the Western Region opened a new
office located at 3540 Wilshire Blvd., Suite 920,
Los Angeles, CA 90010. The office was generously
donated by Miki and David Lee and was flawlessly
remodeled by Gloria Lee and Nathan Swift of the
Swift Lee Architecture Office. Many of the Western
196
Region board members also spent countless hours
designing and remodeling the office with the
support of the Korean-American community. The
office will be used to hold seminars, workshops and
community related events in the years to come.
The annual golf tournament was again held at the
Strawberry Farms Golf Club on October 7 with over
120 players and generated a net income in excess
of $40,000.
The annual scholarship award ceremony was held at
the Korean American Education Center in Los Angeles
on September 27. A total of $84,000 was awarded
to 42 students who were given an opportunity
to meet the Board of Directors and Donors in an
intimate dinner environment. The keynote speaker
was a former KASF recipient and prominent pianist
Alpin Hong. Mr. Hone gave an inspirational speech
on the impact KASF’s scholarship had on his life and
his reasons for wanting to share his love for music
to the community.

A pilot online donation program for KASF.org was
started in June. It allows anyone to give money over
the web to KASF. As a non profit organization, KASF
can accept any amount of donation online using
Paypal technology which provides donors with a
safer, more secure way to donate without sharing
their financial information.
To network past recipients who amount close to
4,500 nationwide, Western Region also completed
a pilot program that allows users to communicate
as a group and/or directly with individuals using a
professional networking website called linkedIn.
Over 30 past recipients (between 2000~2008) were
reconnected and are in active dialogue. The alumni
learn about activities in our region.
Tha annual golf tournament was held on June 24
at Strawberry Farms Golf Club in Irvine. A record
number of 151 players helped raise funds and 12
volunteers including former recipients who helped
make the event a success.
Community-wide
seminars
serving
college
bound students and their parents were planned
to be held at the KASF Western Region office
periodically in collaboration with The Korea
Fundraising Golf
Times, UCLA and USC Korean Alumni Associations.
More colleges will be added in the future.
The first seminar was held on October 17th and
focused on the college application & financial
199

aid process with current college students on the
panel.
The 24th annual scholarship awards ceremony was
held at the office on September 26. Thirty seven
students were awarded a total of $74,000 of
scholarships and the keynote speaker was Jae Min
Chang, Chairman and Publisher of The Korea Times
who has been recognized by business and civic
organizations for his leadership, commitment and
support of programs benefiting Korean-American
youths, immigrant families as well as the community
in general.
Scholarship recipients attending the awards
ceremony met with KASF Western Region board
members and donors before the ceremony, had
a group question and answer session, and had
a chance to meet indivisually with a mentor in
the same interest field to share their contact
information for continuing communication and
guidance in the future.
